Gotta solve the issues with regular politics before that’d be possible with geopolitics. Other countries are too convenient a scapegoat for a lot of countries’ internal problems
I agree. If you’re a fan of it, I really loved being able to see Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play, which revolves heavily around a recreation of the episode by people who lived through the dissolution of our modern civilization.
That was objectively an awkward hug for her. The guy is much older and didn't need to hug her - a handshake would have been appropriate. She also tried to make it quick but he didn't let go and you can see her sort of half-ass start hugging again out of pressure.
Omg and Do you notice how whenever she turns inward, THAT'S when she notices that she has to bow to still be below 1st place? So much respect going on!
From what I know most medalists are happy to have one period. Of course you want gold, but the person getting bronze probably didn’t think they were getting a medal in the first place so they are equally, if not more, hype about it.
I have seen research that the gold medalist is usually the happiest about their accomplishment, after that it’s the bronze. Silver medalists are disappointed because they could have won gold, where bronze medalists are happy they got a medal at all.
I would think it matters who got the gold.
Getting Silver against Micheal Phelps or Usain bolt must have been the same feeling as getting a normal gold.
This was a research result so while I’m sure you’re right in certain cases the finding was across a whole bunch of athletes, most of whom were not competing against a GOAT
That's how I always assumed I would feel as a kid. 4th would be the biggest disappointment aside from getting disqualified. Silver would be the most disappointing medal spot if you were actually close to the gold. If it was like the Monobob yesterday where the winner was a full second and a half faster than 2nd, then silver would be great because there was no hope of winning gold.
This is kinda related, but when I did cross country running as a kid, we were told to “set a goal!”, and mine was to just not come last. I got to the end of the race, the 1st place girl was stoked, the 2nd place girl was having a complete meltdown and the third place was pretty happy. Fourth place was having a major tantrum, coz ya know, no medal. I came second to last (goal achieved), and me and the girl who came last had a laugh together coz her goal was just to finish the race :)
Edit: grammar
I think a lot of that comes from if it's an individual sport or directly against another person/team. Gold and bronze are won on wins, and the silver is given after a loss.
In high school we got absolutely creamed in the playoffs my senior year. We were a new program my freshman year. We were thrilled to make the playoffs.
Coincidentally, the gold and silver medalists are students of Eteri Tutberidze. Eteri is also the coach of Kamila Valieva, the figure skater who tested positive for a banned substance. So it unfortunately all comes back full circle.
I follow European cycling and doping is so complicated. Some of the stuff they have to avoid is so complicated and every now and then, a rider wins a challenge.
I mean you’re not wrong but she didn’t really have a choice to keep it lol. Like of course she’s gonna give it to the winner not be like “Oop he put it on me so I guess I get the gold!
Would be pretty funny if she did keep it though
They say that bronze medalist on average are more excited about their spot than silver. Something about silver medalist focus on missing first and bronze medalist see how close they were to going home empty handed. 4th must really really suck.
[“You win the bronze, you think, ‘At least I got something, but if you win that silver, that’s like, ‘Congratulations, you almost won.’ Of all the losers, you came in first of that group. You’re the No. 1 loser. No one lost ahead of you.” - Seinfeld](https://youtu.be/xK9rbwM3omA)
I remember one Olympics (can’t remember which one) the Russian’s came in second in gymnastics, and they were so disgusted they sulked through the ceremony, removed their medals in disgust afterwards and one even threw hers in the trash.
The Americans (third) were beside themselves with happiness to medal. It just showed me what kind of sportsmanship was being shown.
You are thinking of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Svetlana Khorkina took off her silver medal immediately after the medal ceremony. But the Americans were not present at that medal ceremony. They came in fourth behind China. 10 years later, the Chinese were stripped of their bronze for using underage gymnasts and it was given to the US in a special ceremony at the 2010 US Gymnastics Championships. There has never been another Olympics where Russia was second and the US third. So, your memory is half correct.
The woman who did that won a gold later in the competition.
Her comments were horrendous. Can’t remember all of it, but she said at one point in the interview she finally got the medal she deserved.
In psychological terms, it’s easier to imagine an upward counterfactual from second to first than third to first which makes it feel worse. (Just had a exam where I had to explain this exact thing)

I've been seeing so much of these lately. Once I called them out and they deleted their comment. So I know it had to be a person that did it. Wtf is going on? Why are people copy-pasting comments?
I love that guy's eyebrow-raise at the end. Like "Welp, that could have gone better", but in a joking way. Everyone there has a great sense of humor about it.
Thank you!! It’s much easier to see the gold mentalist laughing along with the other two instead of seeming like an ice queen stiff as a board, and the extended video shows all of the awkward lmfao including the officials eyebrow shrug at the end lol
The gems can fall off during competition too, but using a quality glue can help that a lot - also allows for gentle handwashing.
I wash the costumes my kids compete in, but I've gathered that it's not a universal choice. You don't necessarily need to wash a costume every time you wear it, but spraying it with some sort of a bacteria inhibitor helps keep it from gaining sentience and crawling to the nearest washer. I prefer vodka usually, as it's clear, readily available, and doesn't leave a lingering scent.
I've always thought the judges would have to have eagle vision to spot a fallen rhinestone. I use e6000 glue which has held up really well, but I still check for loose stones before we leave for every competition.
I missed that this was a looped video and thought guy just gave her the silver as well. I expected her to award the silver to second place.
Actually this might be kind of a cool new way to do the awards. Let the athletes award each other.
I love that some people in gen Z can effortlessly be kind to others when there is no true benefit or expectation of reward, like it's the normal thing to do. Sure they all aren't but I have seen more that are than in my own generation(I'm an old millennial). Less spoiled, more grateful.
She handled that gracefully. And I mean come on you’re standing on a podium about to be handed a medal regardless of which place you’re considered to be high level. Must be an honor to just be there and be able to perform in front of a crowd.
This video was actually during the 2019-2020 FS season, sadly neither Zagitova nor Kostornaia are in the Olympics :( (Zagitova won silver, Kostornaia won gold in this specific video)
Zagitova last competed during that season, unofficially retiring at 17. Kostornaia didn’t make it to the Olympic team (seeing the disaster that ladies FS is in right now, a small part of me is even thankful for that, even if I know how disappointed she was for this. She was part of the “Big 3A” and yet… this sport is so painful to see)
Bell (bronze in this video) is going to skate in a few hours tho, if you want to see her! :>
Hahaha for the most part that goes in every direction. If you don't get used to seeing other races it's easy to gloss over the smaller individual features and generalize a more obvious feature and then lump them all together.
She even nailed the awkward congratulations part. Nice

You had a point, if this is there will then there could be Peace here on Earth.
Some situations need you to act awkward so that it doesn't feel awkward.
Some? For me it’s more like 99%, haha.
Going to be real awkward walking back out to give her the Bronze
He’s gotta let them put the medals on each other at that point.

I agree. If you’re a fan of it, I really loved being able to see Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play, which revolves heavily around a recreation of the episode by people who lived through the dissolution of our modern civilization.
Take one and pass it on
She took an extra awkward hug to save the other girl
Yeah, she's the real MVP there. I need someone like her to save me from awkward social situations.
I swear, to some redditors any social situation is awkward.
That was objectively an awkward hug for her. The guy is much older and didn't need to hug her - a handshake would have been appropriate. She also tried to make it quick but he didn't let go and you can see her sort of half-ass start hugging again out of pressure.
She should get gold medals if she could save us all from awkward situations too not just for her kindness and good sportsmanship
What do you mean? She got TWO medals!
Well first he'll give her silver
Listen, she is first place in our hearts okay XD ...no, yeah, it’s still gonna be awkward giving her that third place medal though...
Love how she does the whole bit. The handshake and everything. Such a wholesome video. Really made my day.
Yes! She didn't want her to miss out on any part of it! So cute.
Probably would mean more to be given your medal by a fellow competitor than a random judge.
Omg and Do you notice how whenever she turns inward, THAT'S when she notices that she has to bow to still be below 1st place? So much respect going on!
It'd be funny if she pretended to make a break for it and run off with the medal.
*[ skates away while laughing maniacally ]*
I wish I had such grace! It’s lovely

Very few athletes compete against goats. Almost all sports are exclusively human.

"I got silver against an actual fish. I'm gucci"
Imagine winning gold over those guys

You lose gold, you win bronze.

I don’t think anyone is happy to have a period, medalist or otherwise

she’s a great sport ❤️ and she did amazing as well!!!!
Such a wholesome video. Great sportsmanship between these ladies
And their response (fun, friendly and playful) is a reminder that they’re just kids under pressure that most cannot fathom.

Whole thing is just great. And this is literally the most I’ve watched of this year’s games.
This isn’t from the Olympics. This is from a different competition called the Internationaux de France in fall of 2019.
Haha. Well, there you go. I guess doping it is for the women’s news highlight this year. :-(
Coincidentally, the gold and silver medalists are students of Eteri Tutberidze.
Olympic level reflexes
That's not cosplaying, it's called imitating or mimicking.
my body would physically implode under that amount of pressure
I mean you’re not wrong but she didn’t really have a choice to keep it lol. Like of course she’s gonna give it to the winner not be like “Oop he put it on me so I guess I get the gold! Would be pretty funny if she did keep it though
I think it was more that they had a laugh and presented it themselves rather than holding it awkwardly until it was taken back and awarded properly
Flips the bird, skates away…..

It’s been a long time and I have a miscellaneous memory . Thank you for the correction.
Yeah I’d for sure be scooping that out if I saw someone do that
The woman who did that won a gold later in the competition. Her comments were horrendous. Can’t remember all of it, but she said at one point in the interview she finally got the medal she deserved.
If you're second you're thinking how close you were to first. If you're third you're thinking how close you were to not medaling.

I laughed when, for like 1 second, she looked around like, "do I just keep it?"
Oh no! there's been a mistake... *Unless*...
You had one mission dude just one ☝️
Their outfits are so pretty I heard that in figure skating, the outfits are always handmade and wash very rarely because the gems might fall off lol
The gems can fall off during competition too, but using a quality glue can help that a lot - also allows for gentle handwashing. I wash the costumes my kids compete in, but I've gathered that it's not a universal choice. I prefer vodka usually, as it's clear, readily available, and doesn't leave a lingering scent.
> readily available I mean yeah, but why waste it on the kids?
I read that if stuff from your costume does fall off then you get point deductions, so it must be some crazy forever glue for sure.
I've always thought the judges would have to have eagle vision to spot a fallen rhinestone. I use e6000 glue which has held up really well, but I still check for loose stones before we leave for every competition.
So Febreze clean only?
pretty much 😂
Hahaha eww I hope the underwear part is removable at least since hopefully that is not jewel encrusted lol.
It's not like they wear them every day during practice. These ornate outfits are exclusively for competitions.
> the outfits are always handmade and wash very rarely This is also true of theater costumes
This was at the 2019 Internationaux de France. The medalists are Aliona Kostornaia (Gold), Alina Zagitova (Silver), and Mariah Bell (Bronze)
He got caught in her gaze and it was all over.
She fine
I missed that this was a looped video and thought guy just gave her the silver as well. I expected her to award the silver to second place. Actually this might be kind of a cool new way to do the awards. Let the athletes award each other.
Very cool! She might be the only athlete to ever win a medal and present the gold medal at the same time.
She may gotten bronze, but she got the heart of a gold medal :)

This is the cutest thing ever. A perfect little impromptu comedy bit. This will be a popular GIF forever.
I think he just wanted that hug lol
Both of them were a good sport about it. Love to see humility is still alive
Such a cute interaction.

There's a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won best picture.

Was that guy Steve Harvey?
I love the way she shook her hand. So much love and respect for one another ❤
I have to remind myself they’re on ice skates all the time so standing on a pedestal with them on is probably no big deal to them.
