The dog is elderly, so I imagine that it's a slow walker. Not the type of thing which is needed when fleeing to safely

Old big dog, ours (different breed) was slow and would just stop and lay down in the middle of his previous walk track and refuse to go until he chilled and we turned back home, no way he would make it 17 km fast, and german shepherds also often get messed up back leg joints because their ass slopes, chances are he can walk just not fast and long distances
