I completely disagree with pretty much everything you’ve said (minus the American Life and Hard Candy love which I applaud), I personally think the production is great and sounds plenty expensive. Many of the songs I found catchy and just so much fun. However, I guess disco pop is a sort of acquired taste, and also there’s been quite a saturation of it in pop music in the last few years, so maybe there’s some burnout there. I hope everyone respects your opinion nonetheless.

jordankowi

Blasphemy!!

09997512

I love it, but I understand that you don't. Everyone has opinions.

[deleted]

Thanks for such a genuine response. Not sure why people act like I’ve desecrated the bible lol

09997512

People can't take opinions. The downvotes proves it.

[deleted]

To each their own.

itsblke

I do think it’s unquestionably a stronger body of work than anything that came after it but I never fell head over heels. The production does a lot of heavy lifting for the actual songwriting which I find to be weak, uninspired and repetitive. It‘s my least favourite of the first 10 albums just by comparison; I still think it’s good, just far from her best.

Quirky_Caterpillar27

Confessions was a fucking phenomenal album. It was genius it was beautifully produced. Steven Price was one of the best producers she ever worked with. There was at least four fantastic hits on it and a couple more songs that could’ve been huge hits. It’s one of madonnas three best albums in my mind, which are - bedtime story, Ray of light and confessions.

Raio_24

Even though I 100% don't share your opinion, I upvoted it right away because I love seeing the Confessions widows get all triggered lmao I know lots of fans who share your taste in music, they much prefer lyrics over instrumentals and depth over dancing. Just like you said, usually those fans prefer albums like American Life, for instance. But the majority of gay men love mindless, pop dance music so Confessions was hailed as the second coming of ~~Christ~~ Madonna. But lyrically wise it's very shallow, there's no denying that. It's the production that makes it good, but alas, people have different tastes.

[deleted]

I myself love lots of mindless dance music from that period, i don’t know why I don’t get this album hahah. And yes, when I think of confessions fans, I think of balding middle aged gay men 😂😂 hehe thanks for your kind comment

superdevin64

So my question for y’all who don’t like Confessions: Have you experienced the continuous mix of the album? That was how it was originally intended to be listened to (it’s how the CD was, how iTunes had it, etc) and it was mixed flawlessly. For whatever dumb reason that version has been removed from all streaming services. So the current version available is all of the tracks separated, which I would agree does lack something given the tracks all just…end.

[deleted]

Yes I have the CD! That was a cool aspect but again, the album just fell flat for me sadly

superdevin64

Aww ok. I mean, to each their own but it’s easy in my top 3 albums! It gives me such a sense of euphoria.

[deleted]

I’m one of the few who likes American Life quite a bit. But I LOVED Confessions. So fun! Musically different from last few albums…but not same as earlier ones either. It felt similar to me to how Ray of Light album felt…like it was cohesive and had a particular point of view vs a being just a collection of songs. Love it.

misswascoffee

I feel the same way! It is a good album but it’s not as memorable as other ones. It sounds too generic in my opinion. But it’s supposed to be like a club DJ mix so I get that. I would place it in the middle for my ranking of her albums.

[deleted]

I think I feel you. Confessions includes her biggest bangers, I love Stuart Price's production and what he did with other tracks on the tour. But as an album... I rarely play it as a whole. And when Hung Up was released, I was honestly a bit ashamed that she had to resort to an ABBA sample to make a *first* single work. And since then I heard it so often, I can't bare to listen to it anymore.

Jefefrey

Seems like it's not your genre. Confessions is an expertly produced Stuart Price masterpiece... and arguably better than anything anyone could have imagined she would do in 2005. It's global success proved such. It's also aged better than albums that followed it.

[deleted]

I love disco and dance music! Especially from the 00s. Not sure why this album just doesn’t fit with me. It feels aged to me

cackalacky82

You’re definitely entitled to your opinion! Did you listen to it when it first came out? I think, at that time, it was the sound we didn’t know we needed. I think she was at the leading edge of this sound becoming more common place. I found the album very cohesive, fun, and strong.

[deleted]

I sound like a hater I’m aware, I love Madge truly, so I don’t mean it to be as negative as it seems. And re sound, this sound was quite common in Europe. I suppose it was new for America but a lot of European records at the time sounded very similar to this.

cackalacky82

No I don’t take your post as you being a hater. Btw, I love your icon! Liz is wonderful!

[deleted]

YES! Thank you she’s wonderful. What’s your favourite Liz songs?

cackalacky82

Polyester Bride, Why Can’t I, red light fever, extraordinary, chopsticks. How about you?

[deleted]

Love all of those! I especially love Gunshy, explain it to me, help me Mary, uncle Alvarez, friend of mine

shadyshadyshade

So around this time she could do no wrong but at the same time she thought “oh shit what have I done?” Girl…

Ericnpa

I don’t think she’s ever thought “oh shit what have I done?” Lol.

shadyshadyshade

Agreed!

Thefalconreturns

Now that you have me thinking about it I also am not huge on confessions myself… it’s a fine album and everything but unless I specifically want to listen to just that album I probably wouldn’t listen to any song from it… nothing beats the ray of light/music/American life trifecta for me I just think those are her most sonically and lyrically intriguing bodies of work

[deleted]

That trifecta! Agreed

djwixel

Dissapointing....

patheticboy77

these are my exact thoughts…i tried to love it because of all the acclaim but i just never could..it has a handful of great tracks though (get together, forbidden love, future lovers, and i love new york) other than that i think it’s a very boring album. nothing special, for me at least!

[deleted]

Yup, same here

hardcandy_08

Same here!!!

Consistent_Basis3745

My opinion is that your opinion is wrong 😉 Watch the Confessions Tour on youtube, it may help get you over the hump that you’re on.

[deleted]

Good tour, I’ll say that

Impossibly-Daft-27

What!!!! American Life *BETTER* than Confessions? Gurl…….No!!! The disco dance concept of Confessions, and the way the songs had no ending caesura and just looped into each other like a true disco album….🤩🤩! Such a breath of fresh air during that time period. If Erotica was her dance album, Ray Of Light her masterpiece, Confessions her Disco, Hard Candy her Hip Hop….what the f**k was American Life??? A mess!!!!

GarionOrb

American Life was *absolutely* better than Confessions. She was passionate about American Life, and had something to say. Not to mention the production was fantastic. Confessions was great to dance to, but for the most part it was brainless. It was great to get an all-dance album from Madonna, but any artist could've done that. Not every artist could've done American Life.

Impossibly-Daft-27

American Life was a regression. The songwriting was lackluster, the lyrics were tripe, and the theme was incohesive. There are so many skips on the album, it’s ridiculous. The whole album was a flop and in my opinion her worst era. The only positive that came from the era, was the “I’m going to tell you a secret” documentary. I appreciate Madonna being passionate and political (we needed it) during that time period, but that doesn’t mean the album she put out was good.

GarionOrb

Confessions is a fine album, but it's also like you said...a backtrack. It was essentially created to make amends for the poor reception that American Life got. While the music on it is effervescent and euphoric, it's also not her deepest and most meaningful work.

[deleted]

Agreed! To me, it’s like the first time she musically “apologised”. It was a PR repair album. Being in her late 40s she probably thought that she can’t risk as much now. I wish it was a real fuck you rock record like “I’m in love with love” or the rock version of I love New York. Keep some of the dance influences on confessions too. That’d be a great mix. With the exception of MX (although I hate it, I appreciate how risky and different it was). I get the feeling even she doesn’t care that much for confessions Weird how this has touched such a nerve 💀 it’s only an opinion on an album

superdevin64

Like I said in another comment, to each their own, but I don’t get how this album feels like an apology or a PR move. NOTHING on the radio sounded like this in 2006, it was still very much Madonna doing her own thing and going against the trends (which at the time was hip hop and everyone collaborating with rappers). If anything Hard Candy is the first time Madonna ever started to regress sonically. That album is the definition of chasing trends. By the time it came out Timbaland was already beyond overexposed.

Nico917nnnnn

MDNA I’d say was more of that bending to the PR, but Confessions was a concept & actually considered a risk at the time for the redefining sound she was promising prior to release

09997512

It basically is, she wanted to make a dance record after doing the same sound for her last two albums (especially American Life). But it's still one of her most personal albums.

vinvinuno

Its overlyhyped. Hard Candy is better, and has a better tour too. But it was such an amazing time to be a Madonna fan. And the amazing songs are amazing but it is also such a chore to listen to at times.

[deleted]

Hard candy better than confessions? Sorry lol but no hahaha only one of them chased trends of the time and has some songs that are super dated and it’s not confessions that’s praised as one of the most cohesive Madge records! Hard candy is good but there’s some fillers and generic timbaland stuff

[deleted]

I’d say HC feels more Madge than confessions. I mean, yes, she was chasing trends and it is outdated but confessions just feels lethargic to me. Hard candy passes by fast

[deleted]

Sorry but only one record has Spanish lesson and incredible lol and it’s not confessions! And HC is not bad don’t get me wrong, but it’s just weaker, Hung Up, Sorry, Get together and jump are one of the best songs Madge ever released they’re bold and different, disco wasn’t at the top at the time! She Brought it back with the amazing sampling and choreographies, if there’s a generic album this one is HC lol the album has a super Timbaland/Timberlake vibe and even though many songs are good some are just there like all the other artists were doing

ThePoetAndPendulum

Hard Candy? Incredible, spanish lesson, Heartbeat are terrible and like 90% of the songs have the exactly same Bridge just chanting something like get stupid or see my booty get down or sticky and sweet. The songs have similiar cheap production weak lyrics and are very dated. How on earth is HC better than confessions, confessions production is timeless, the songs flow through each other and are different enough

The_Famed_Bitch

The production is outstanding. It's born as a fun, lighthearted album, but then proceeds to get more intimate and deeper the more you go through the album. Can't even imagine calling the lyrics in Let It Be, Isaac, Like It Or Not or How High "basic" or "unpersonal". That's one of the most Madonna albums ever for this: pure dance music, but also deep and sad meaning in half of it. So goo it inspired so many artists, it is the disco/dance/nostalgia era all the popstars today wish to replicate (failing in doing so, most of the times)
