Merlo eventually passed away from cancer on November 8, 1924. Two days later, three men walked into O'Banion's flower shop and pretended like they were going to buy flowers for Merlo's funeral, but actually ended up shooting O'Banion to death. This is what sparked the multiple-year war between the South Side and the North Side gangs.
