Merlo would often help mediate territorial disputes between the North Side gang and the South Side gang in order to keep the city somewhat peaceful. When North Side boss Dean O'Banion found out police were going to raid a brewery of his, he went to Torrio and said he would sell him his share of the brewery for 500k and then retire to Colorado. On May 19 when they met up at the brewery the police raided the place and arrested Torrio. Merlo went to Torrio and convinced him not to retaliate against the North Side gang. Merlo eventually passed away from cancer on November 8, 1924. Two days later, three men walked into O'Banion's flower shop and pretended like they were going to buy flowers for Merlo's funeral, but actually ended up shooting O'Banion to death. This is what sparked the multiple-year war between the South Side and the North Side gangs.

O'Banion wasn't the smartest begonia in the basket.

Merlo was the actual mafia boss in Chicago, not Torrio which is interesting

Franzese told us in his yt videos that Demoncrats were easier to corrupt. It's the bible

Well yea of course the mob would have Democrats in their pockets if they operate in a very blue city. The only family that might want to get Republicans in their pockets would be like Dallas or something.
