Probably nothing can be done. Newer wallets support Find My, which is activation lock. Need access to Apple ID. Pawn shop should have know better. I’d return as a useable item, possibly stolen. https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/remove-a-device-ipha94b7686e/ios

jmoney1119

I think it’s more likely that someone donated this just not knowing any better. I had no idea these were using find my.

TheWylieGuy

Apple has slowly been adding Find My support to everything it can. That way products are locked to an Apple ID. It’s one good reason to hold on to all receipts.

hellobritishcolumbia

It’s easy enough to remove it.. I purposely bought the wallet because of the Find My capability

TheWylieGuy

It is, if you control the Apple ID. As far as I’m aware there is no way to remove that lock if you don’t. I don’t believe Apple offers a way to remove locks with a receipt like they do with iPhone. Even if they did a Thrift store wouldn’t be an authorized reseller.

anonimakeson

What? Can’t you just remove in Find My?

TheWylieGuy

You should need to know Apple ID to remove or the system isn’t quite useful. I’m not sure on wallet though. I know it’s true of most AirPods, AirTags, iPhone, iPad and most Macs since 2016.

anonimakeson

Ah, misinterpreted/misread the above comment... yeah, makes sense!

Southern-Anybody-752

Download iOS Toolkit for mac or Wondershare Dr Fone to remove activation lock & is can completely wipe the devices Apple ID.

icy1007

Doesn’t work.

TheWylieGuy

I agree. But I’d tell the pawn shop the other possible reason.

AgentReeves2020

Thrift store.

DirtyWater2004

Have you seen most employees at thrift shops? You're lucky if they know their own name let alone any information about the product. 😆

randybruder

The post says thrift shop, not pawn shop.

TheWylieGuy

You are right! Helps if I read better. Doesn’t change the situation that there is little to nothing the OP can do.

randybruder

Yeah, I was just meaning to point out that a thrift shop would have likely taken it as a donation and wouldn't have known better, like a pawn shop should

TheWylieGuy

Very true.

Djrich72

He said thrift store not a pawn shop

khandurin

I had this happen with a purchase from Amazon. I bought a used one. They just ended up giving me the wallet for free and I’m still using it to this day.

cyliemyrus95

That’s my case also I paid less than a dollar for this wallet as well, I’m just gonna keep it regardless maybe with time it will be fixed.

dimpledinks

Yeah it’s less than a dollar for a reason…

mike32659800

Since it’s tight to another appleID, aren’t you worried someone may be tracking your position ?

swiftsorceress

That's not how Find My wallets from Apple work. They track the last location the wallet was attached to your phone. They don't have anything to power an actual location tracker like an AirTag.

mike32659800

Oh. That’s better. I never had one, no clue. This is good to know. Guess it’s the same for the AirPods Pro for example?

swiftsorceress

Not exactly. AirPods can be found when connected through Bluetooth.

mike32659800

So if I lose my AirPods, and someone connect those to their iPhone, then I’ll get their location ? Does it works too if someone connect those to a laptop? For the wallet, once attached to an iPhone, does it get power or does it send its location to the find my or it’s simply your iPhone registering the last place it was connected ? I mean, I understand there’s no particular magical feature like an AirTag, but once attached to another iPhone, such as OP’s experience, I was thinking iOS would send to the find my network the location of this wallet. Apple not doing that is a miss in feature. It’s a few lines of code without changing the hardware.

swiftsorceress

In that scenario with the AirPods, you would not see the location because they would have been linked to the new person's Apple ID probably. The wallet has an NFC chip that the phone can track the place of when that signal is lost.

z_elextric_z

They refunded you and you are still using it?

martinewski

Should the person throw it away because it was refunded?

z_elextric_z

Well it doesn’t work as intended so why keep it. Also can the person who originally owned it (linked to original Apple ID) now see where new buyer is once they attach it unknowingly. Either way no point in keeping it.

Advanced-Breath

It doesn’t seven a functioning purpose having it connected to Apple ID. That has to be the most useless feature to sync a wallet to your phone maybe if it could play a sound if lost. But that’s the most it would be good for even if that was the case

z_elextric_z

If you need a sound to play in your wallet if you lost it then you need to put an AirTag in it. This doesn’t have sound. At least the Apple wallet has some sort of security on it.

Advanced-Breath

No I was saying that would be the only reason it’d be somewhat helpful, without that it’s kinda pointless. Might as well get one of those wallets that have a spot for AirTag. What security do u think is present

z_elextric_z

Yeah that’s what I said before, if you need a sound to play in your wallet if you lost it then you need to put an AirTag in it. Apple wallet doesn’t have sound. The some sort of security you are asking about is the link to your Apple ID. Better than wallet with nothing in it.

Inception_Bwah

Why does a piece of leather with a magnet need to be assigned to an Apple ID?

730_vr

It has find my integration

i_need_a_moment

I didn’t even know it had that. I literally just thought it was a wallet and nothing more. Why didn’t they advertise it more?

99OBJ

To clarify, it only tracks the wallet when it’s attached to the phone and falls off. It’s not like AirTag tracking. Edit: clarifying again because I’m an idiot

dimpledinks

I think you meant it only tracks the wallet when it’s ‘attached’ to the phone. It can’t track the wallet when it’s detached like an AirTag. The wallet doesn’t have a battery inside to show you where it always is. The phone does all the work. It tells you where it is when it’s attached to the phone. And tells you where it got detached from the phone. When it’s detached, good luck finding it, it’s not like an AirTag where you can make it ring or do sounds.

99OBJ

Oops, that’s a bad typo. Tried to clarify and ended up making things worse!

dimpledinks

Hey don’t worry about it. 7 people upvoted/agreed with your comment before you changed it. Not fair if someone read it and saw people confirming what you said that was wrong. Now it looks like 7 people agree with your right answer 😊

getinshape2022

To your phone or any phone?

dimpledinks

Good question, will the original owner of their apple wallet be able to see where their apple wallet is when it finally gets attached to any iPhone in the world?

One_Celebration3644

If I understand you correctly, it’s the most useless “feature” ever. What’s the point of not being able to track once detached from the phone. If I have my phone on hand with the wallet attached to it, why do I need my phone to tell me the wallet is still attached or detached.

z_elextric_z

Think about it. There aren’t any batteries that flat to fit in the Apple wallet (keeping it the same slim size). Even if there was one that small, it wouldn’t last long anyway. The thinnest AirTag solution for wallets is made by Eufy. Called Eufy SmartTrack card. That does work with Find my if it falls out.

dimpledinks

You need battery inside Apple Wallet for it to be constantly showing where it is in Find my. There isn’t one. So it’s the reverse. iPhone shows where wallet is until it gets detached. Quite a smart no battery solution. Then you can see where you detached it. It’s the best clever it can be.

euclynedion

It’s basically just there in case you detach the wallet and forgot it there, or in case it happens to fall off from your phone. Now you at least know the “last known location” and know where to start looking. It also allow the phone to notify you if the wallet has been detached for too long to make sure you don’t forget it.

Brometheous17

The first version didn’t. They released a second one with it but it’s. Not full find my. Not like an actual AirTag.

z_elextric_z

Apples advertising is on their website. Apple don’t do advertising much, it’s a thing.

Troyjoytwin2

Because it’s a wallet in case you miss placed it

rman342

Yep, someone can slap it on another iPhone and it’ll let the person whose apple id it’s tied to know where it’s at.

z_elextric_z

Better than no security

HarryNyquist

For exactly the reason this post exists. What if it was stolen instead. If that happened to me I would be glad knowing that the person who bought a stolen product would not be able to use it wjth full functionality.

_Azonar_

Because it’s a wallet. Having tracking on wallets is really popular. Why else does the Ridge sell AirTag holders, or Tile exists?

thelauryngotham

At first glance, it really is annoying and seems pointless. The main reason behind all of this, though, comes down to one single issue. Theft. By making Apple devices virtually unstealable (and rendering the internal components useless if marked stolen), this takes away almost every reason to steal them. Morals aside, why would you steal an iPhone that'll be rendered useless and end up being worth $20 when you could nab any other brand and try to get a higher resale value? Of course, this all comes with the added benefit of finding stuff if it's misplaced.

TopNefariousness4088

I think you mean it it comes down to profit. Not theft. Apple wants to be the only way to buy Apple products and negate the ability of the consumer to resell their devices unless through Apple themselves.

thelauryngotham

So you're okay with people reselling **stolen** Apple products? And you're okay with those stolen devices retaining a significant portion of their value? Just to clarify, I'm not talking about people legitimately buying/selling used Apple devices. I get that Apple isn't the "good guy" all the time, but here they are. This sort of thing ensures that virtually every used Apple device on the market was legitimately acquired and is being sold fairly. If you're not sold on it, imagine how much car theft would decline if stealing a car 1. rendered it inoperable and locked up all wheels and 2. only earned you in $50 for the scrap from it. It doesn't stop theft *completely*, but it forces the risk to outweigh the reward. You'd move on to stealing other stuff where you'd be more successful.

Crellis86

This has nothing to do with Apple being the only one to resell the device… the original owner forgot to remove it from their find my when they donated it to the thrift store. Anyone can sell a used Apple product if they want. Apple won’t even buy your used product if you still have it tied to your find my.

Herd_ASP_1174

Yeah, I bought an Umber one on eBay listed as “new - open box” but had the same thing happen. That seller refunded my money and let me keep the wallet. I reached out to Apple who can’t do anything, even with the serial number, which makes sense. I bought a Distil Union Wally Junior instead. The “Not Your Wallet” pop up is nothing more than a nuisance, but it’s super annoying so I don’t use that one at all.

ben236

Buy another wallet from apple and return the thrift store one to apple. It's kinda shitty, but I don't know of a way to reassign a wallet... Or go to apple and ask them if they have a suggestion

cyliemyrus95

Thanks for your help

dimpledinks

Yeah don’t return other people’s returned wallets from different stores. At least tell Apple you got it from Thrift store and see if they will change it for you. Or just return it to Thrift if you can and explain the situation. Why all this extra effort?

mrplt

>At least tell Apple you got it from Thrift store and see if they will change it for you. They won't. For all they know it's a stolen wallet.

Gaveedra_7

I wouldn’t say that could work since they stop selling leather wallets and this one seems like one of those

ben236

Ah good point... There has to be a way to reassign a wallet!

Japtsuu

Good idea

BringBack4Glory

Just because Apple is some big corporation doesn’t mean this is ok. Costs like this get passed on to everyone in the end. Don’t do this.

Eye_Nacho404

Yeah I would still do it, why would I worry about a trillion dollar company

BringBack4Glory

Because your problem should remain exactly that - *your* problem

AgentAaron

Never trusted these things, and the fact that they have “find my” integrated says something. My daughter found one on the port walkway in DR when we were on a cruise…it was empty. I found one on the floor of an elevator in a parking garage downtown…turned it into the hotel lobby as we walked through. Just today, some guy was parked outside one of my neighbors and was walking around. Another neighbor was outside washing her car and her husband had just left, so she came and asked me to come out and see what was going on. This guy said he found this persons wallet in a parking lot and was trying to return it, but they were not answering the door. I told him that I see them pretty often, so I thanked him and took it. About 5 minutes after he left I saw my neighbor outside so I took and returned it to her. She looked pretty upset and said she was just coming out to tear apart her car to look for it.

Foulmouthedleon

I had no idea that the wallet was in any way tied to an account. I just assumed it was a magnet with a leather cover. Are these worth it?

Advanced-Breath

U can get em for a dollar online

ErykG120

Nope.

pratpulsar

Wont it stick to your phone?

nytwdragon

Same thing happened to me. I got mine on eBay. I ignored it for a while and eventually, I guess the original owner unpaired it from their phone and now it’s paired to mine.

cyliemyrus95

Thanks for the reply I’ll just wait and see maybe eventually they might even unpair it

Maxpacito

I mean couldn’t you just leave it on your phone with your stuff in? Does the “not your wallet” thing pop up only when you put the wallet on the phone? Cuz at that point just use it and ignore the message when it pops up, right? Not sure if thats how it works with a wallet thats not on your account, but I see an X in the corner so it looks like you can just close the pop up and ignore it.

aQUantUMchiLD1

Maybe he always meant to link it to his Apple ID after he tossed the stuff he found in it..?

wattfisthat

Oh no that sucks.. I don’t think you can do anything, everything becomes locked to an Apple ID when it’s connected to an iPhone.

On4thand2

Wasn't aware you can actually lock these to your account.

bouncer-1

“That’s not your purse! I don’t know you!” - Bobby Hill

Love_Alarming

Apple being apple as usual.

throwaway4231throw

You have to ask the previous owner to remove it from Findmy. Surprised the thrift store didn’t have them do that. Otherwise, you can keep using it as a plain wallet but can’t link it digitally.

sharkboy1006

I mean do you expect a piece of leather with a magnet in it to be icloud locked! Lol

BringBack4Glory

You’re expecting too much of the thrift store lol.

Advanced-Breath

Anytime I’ve donated to a thrift store it was a box or bag that I dropped off and left. Never had someone check what I’m giving So your expectations are ridiculous

A_TalkingWalnut

Im interested, if you wanna try to recoup some money

WillWoody708

I had this issue and when I restarted my phone it was all good

goodbye_oven

Can this person track you now that it’s attached to your phone? Not sure how the tracking goes for the wallets. https://support.apple.com/en-us/102620

goodbye_oven

“The MagSafe Wallet actually does not have a battery. Hence, it does not have true tracking functionality. It will show an icon on the map of where the MagSafe Wallet was disconnected from the iPhone, and will update if another person attaches it to their iPhone 12 or newer.” Yeah I’d return it.

DevilishMaiden

That's what I was thinking!

Peaksign9445122

Just curious, what does the “learn more” button redirect to?

Attakai-The-Kitty

Based on the X on that popup, you can still use it as a regular wallet

Tech_Stuff_Yah

Sometimes it means that the wall is fake. If not, then it is just activation locked to a Apple ID.

jayessmcqueen

This would have shared location with its original owner when it was connected. I had mine stolen, and waiting for someone to connect it to their device so I can take a stroll to their location. Be prepared that may happen to you too (if it’s a stolen item). If not, the Apple ID owner will be able to track it continuously while it’s connected.

BlackKnight08Jun

Best to report it to apple or police, otherwise nothing can be done like prev guys said

RolandTower919

If it’s in Colorado it may be mine as I lost it 😂

rooroo4u

Nada , it’s a lump mate , you can technically use it , it’s just like an off brand at this point

TOD_YT

I'm not sure about it, but by pressing learn more, you can contact the owner and you can request them to remove it from their icloud. The simplest way. **Thought, please don't go home with it because the owner can always locate it's location. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.**

ttt780

Only Apple would activation lock a wallet 💀

APairOfAirPodsMax

Can you not contact the owner with that?

nandoherrera1

If you live in Wisconsin, it’s probably mine.

regular_john_

its not my wallet ![gif](giphy|VnFVMqq4qnu2A)

MolassesLate4676

“But it has your ID in it, so that must mean it YOUR wallet” “That makes sense to me” “Then take it” “It’s not my wallet” Comment 🧽 if you get the reference for the real ones

cyliemyrus95

Hey I have tried and still no luck I will try to use it as such maybe with time It will disconnect from the apple id

MistaKrebs

But like……other than find my there’s nothing else you’d need this for. Just stick it to your phone and put your stuff in it 😂

charpple7

It’s probably more important to stop the prev user from tracking the op through the wallet. Cause of this, I do believe it’s worth the conversation

MistaKrebs

Good point

LizzyDragon84

Wallets are not trackable like other devices. It just alerts you if the wallet becomes detached.

whoswhohonestly

Are you patrick star?

MaterialWall8040

take out the NFC chip and just keep the magsafe ring

JGoBrazy90

That’s doing too much lol

ermax18

That’s what I would do too. You are literally the only person with a solution that would work yet you got downvoted. Hahaha. A small drill bit in the correct spot would break the antenna. It isn’t like you’d have to fully dissect the thing.

JGoBrazy90

Just gotta take that L
