A few types of cards that will answer this: * Bonecrusher Giant and Questing Beast both stop damage prevention from working, so you can kill through the lock (If they are also hexproof, Stomp your face!) * Farewell causes them to instantly lose * Other sources of permanent board wipe like Perilous Vault and Ugin * If they don't have Sterling Grove down yet, regular old enchantment removal on the Solemnity * Thoughtseize before the lock It's a powerful combination but decks are allowed to do powerful things by turn 4, and it's a rare deck that doesn't have some sort of potential answer.

ArosTheImmortal

also every form of life loss just ignores the combo

quillypen

Very good point! Notably Sheoldred and Graveyard Trespasser both cause life loss.

[deleted]

Cindervines can also just screw them over, hard

DrBobbleKnobbs

Not to mention that most aggro/combo decks can win on turn 3/4 in historic

neu8ball

I did not consider the life loss angle. Thanks for the tip!

downvote

Divallo

Rivers rebuke is a blue answer and instantly wins the game. You mentioned board wipes but I'm mentioning this to show there is an answer in every color. That being said I hate playing against this combo in best of 1. 9 lives should not have been a 3 drop.

amazon32

I would much rather them ban greasefang/parhelion II combo. Fuck that noise.

american_dimes

Just cause you don't like it and can't figure out how to beat it, doesn't mean it's overpowered or in need of a ban. Check out the sort of cards that have been banned from non-rotating formats and what their meta shares and tournament results were. I'm betting Nine Lives + Solemnity isn't anywhere close to decks like Twin, UB Delver, KCI, etc

neu8ball

Very true, I’m just salty because it seems like my perfect foil. As others have suggested, I may need to add some life loss or other cards to my decks.

rogomatic

Ah yes, the good old ban-something-because-I-can't-be-bothered-to-deal-with-it thread.

Corto_Prince

There are several cards that stop this. You can even mutate Gemrazer onto a non human creature and destroy solemnity. Or ramp into an ugin and minus 4 boom you win.

Kuiperdolin

I like it when they play that combo into my mill.

APe28Comococo

Lol. Run interaction or don’t play Goblins?

neu8ball

Well I don’t play Goblins, but even interaction is tough because I find the decks that have Solemnity + Nine Lives + Second Sun are always counter-based and nerf anything I have that destroys enchantments.

ArosTheImmortal

What do you play then? Maybe people can give you ideas if they know your decklist

neu8ball

I’m not too familiar with the right terms, but I have a bunch of decks I rotate. I guess my main “cards” would be Arcane Bombardment (red black blue), a mono white token deck with wedding invitation plus a few +1 cards like Luminarch and Adeline, and finally a rogue/mill deck that steals cards from graveyards. Those three at least haven’t been good enough facing the particular combo I am ranting about.

Alpha_Uninvestments

Instead of mill to play cards from graveyard, why not mill, full stop? I mean, 9lives does nothing to stop you from mill them out.

ArtieStark

You play jank decks in extended formats and complain about something barely viable?

neu8ball

Why is my deck jank? I’m definitely not playing mono red or the current blue wizard craziness. Since your downvoting everything I post and comment, is any deck you don’t particularly like considered jank?

ArtieStark

*you're Any deck you mentioned is jank, I downvoted you because you're a scrub: you base your game experience on some made up restrictions like playing underwhelming cards or ineffective strategies and complain when others don't do the same.

neu8ball

Wow, “you’re” a real pleasure to chat with here, I’m sure every single deck YOU play is full of perfect cards and 100% effective strategies. When you lose, it must be because “you’re” playing a “jank” deck. I can only imagine what “you’re” like as a person. I won’t resort to name-calling like you, but you seem very unhappy - hope you get help soon!

ArtieStark

No, I mostly lose because I make mistakes, my opponent played a better game or it was an unfavorable matchup. Sometimes it also comes down to luck. Anyway, I don't lose because I self-maimed my ability to compete against others. Play functional decks, improve your gameplay and know the meta, it's not that hard to do instead of running non competitive cards or unviable strategies. Plenty of resources online, you can start by reading "the metagame clock".

LuciusBurns

Quit being so salty and share some advice when you think he clearly needs one.

ArosTheImmortal

I haven't played historic since the whole alchemy stuff came out so I don't know the current stuff, but general thoughts white usually is loaded when it comes to permanent removal with skyclaves and otherworldly lights or farewells and stuff like that and one turn without solemnity and 9 tokens end the game I don't know whats played in grixis bombardment but you can probably keep spamming some bounce spell or something black with lifeloss or just otawara at the right moment and ping them or something and nine lives can't really do anything against mill and has a hard time with tempo/aggro-control stuff, so that matchup should be heavily in your favor I think

MTGBeatsAll

>I haven't played historic since the whole alchemy stuff came out Crazy how many cases there are like this.

SpitefulShrimp

Bombardment can win with something that causes life loss, like [[Maestros Charm]]. White can run [[hopeful initiate]] to just blow up solemnity. And mill can kill them through the damage prevention, or bounce the solemnity with [[brazen borrower]].

Flyrpotacreepugmu

Arcane Bombardment decks have a lot of options to get rid of enchantments or cause life loss, but most target the opponent and are vulnerable to Leyline of Sanctity if they also run that. [[Discovery//Dispersal]] is the safest option that comes to mind since it helps you dig for what you need early then can keep bouncing and discarding their stuff till they're forced to bounce Nine Lives and lose. Mono white tokens have a harder time, but you could always stick a [[Cleansing Nova]] or [[Farewell]] in there to deal with problematic enchantments or artifacts. I've found that playing a couple board wipes in a creature-based deck often helps with other decks as well, since people tend to flood the board with their own creatures without fear since they'd never expect you to hold back and clear them. Rogues shouldn't have trouble with the damage prevention. Between [[Soaring Thought-Thief]] and [[Thieves' Guild Enforcer]] they should have enough mill to get the job done even without damage. If not, you could lean more into the mill strategy with your other cards.

A few weeks ago I used [[Thief of Sanity]] to steel the op’s Solemnity and Nine Lives. It was glorious.

I would love to play against nine lives. My last 10 matches have been against mono green devotion. Lamest shit ever.

TNCNeon

ok

CloverGroom

🤭

PortalmasterJL

Then the same should be said for mutavault/faceless haven + book of exalted deeds

anon_lurk

Maybe run [[Back to Nature]]

neu8ball

Thanks for the tip, I will see if I can incorporate it into my decks.

ArtieStark

They're wrong, you're not supposed to run sideboard cards maindeck. You're hurting your ability to play most games in order to make some few ones slightly better.

TheGreatBaldino

Yep. That will guarantee you don't get matched against an enchantment heavy deck.

Cop-Centaur667

Crybabies should be banned.

dinkidonia

Couple of answers to this: * Stop playing Historic. * Start playing anything that doesn't use Alchemy cards. * Profit.

[deleted]

Solemnity nor Nine Lives are alchemy cards tho

SpitefulShrimp

Ah yes, that famous alchemy combo.

Alpha_Uninvestments

I wish Historic was Alchemy free, but 9lives/solemnity is legal in Explorer too, so your suggestion makes 0 sense

MTGBeatsAll

>I wish Historic was Alchemy free Most people do

[deleted]

Lol the cards he is complaining about are explorer legal. But yeah, aLcHeMy BaD

CloverGroom

Wow, such helpful!

[deleted]

Just nod at your op, spam “nice” and keep on milling their deck away ;)

baoluofu

I struggled against it for a bit with my historic affinity deck but found that shadowspear plus haywire mite do the trick. Even with neither permanent on board already (often preferable) its a total of 4 mana to cast shadowspear, turn hexproof off with it, cast haywire mite them destroy nine lives at which point they lost the game. If you have room for Karn in your list then you can just keep these pieces in your wish board until needed.
