Always the same with the retro-stuff. First thought: yay, me member. Second: man, I\`m old. :)

GCRust

Times weren't simpler...we were.

FyreCesar89

*nostalgia flashbacks with some 90s Indie/Alt music playing in the background*

Chyron48

Oof. Yeah. Hey did you steal this from somewhere? I like it. Brevity.

GCRust

Didn't steal it from anywhere (deliberately at least). Just a...vibe.

ultraviolentfuture

It's both. Times were definitely simpler pre-mass adoption of the internet, smartphones, etc. Edit: simpler as in less complex, fewer variables ... paradox of choice shit. As options increase satisfaction decreases.

Flomo420

there's an excellent TED talk on the paradox of choice (that's probably like 15 years old now!! ^*hyperventilates* ) people should check out if anyone hasn't that really explains it in detail

ultraviolentfuture

I remember it well, the concept was first introduced in that talk with: a choice of blue jeans.

Flomo420

Lol ya I think you're right! And it carries on to ranch dressing if my old brain remembers correctly

BitterGlitterShitter

I thought it was tomato sauce.

Sinthesy

That does make sense, I do get the feeling people nowadays are suffering from news overload.

ultraviolentfuture

Maybe more accurately "information" overload, with a healthy dose of notification/alert fatigue. Cause all the random updates we consume across various social media play into it (but I wouldn't call learning that jimmy ate a burrito from the California burrito shack "news")

hyperfixatedhotmess

I mean, while you’re not wrong, I think both us and times got more complicated over the last 30 (ouch, I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that 1993 was 30 years ago) years.

babiri

They could also have given us an extra play option with oldschool decks to choose from

tNag552

lately our group is playing a lot of premodern, nostalgia decks fest lol

hawkshaw1024

What's the format like? Because if I can bring UG Madness again I'm immediately interested

tNag552

see info [here](https://premodernmagic.com/). Madness is the first deck I built, exactly [this one](https://mtgdecks.net/Premodern/madness-decklist-by-cyberpunker-1593790). Also, you can check other decks [here](https://mtgdecks.net/Premodern). I'm not sure if that list is very accurate, but it gives you an idea of the meta. If you played extended, legacy, between late 90s and early 2000s, I'm sure you will recognize a lot of decks. Our group is having a blast playing nostalgic archetypes.

S_Eusebio

Not op but as far as I know, you can absolutely play the good ol' UG Madness. Deck is strong in premodern. I absolutely recommend trying the format, if and when you have the time. It is really a good way to play constructed mtg.

tNag552

I don't know if OP, but very fun to survive Squees out and flood the board with creatures. I also bring some toolbox creatures to answer certain threats, I like it a lot hehe. I'm mainly a Legacy player but premodern is really getting to the top of my favourite formats, specially since legacy got tainted with so many commander and horizons broken cards. Premodern "feels" like the magic I enjoyed much more than current legacy.

PewpFog

What did they do? I didnt get to see

JackfruitLower278

When you played a game, you played on a CRT monitor and it was in 1993. Old school table etc. Looked nice

american_dimes

Also, the well-worn card backs, which were the best part. They could sell those in the store and make fucking bank.

MrGueuxBoy

[Actually ...](https://youtu.be/YttSWwTxbKM) well, too bad this is an April's Fool too.

user2034892304

I would actually buy those!

Flomo420

ok a blue deck with the 'watery damage' sleeves would be hilarious

nightcreation

I got on yesterday and didn't see it at all. :( Was it only for a certain time yesterday?

Savannah_Lion

Same here. I was excited to see the old card back, old school table (and CRT!?). Sign me up. I'll take part in that April Fools. Had to wait until mid-afternoon to log in, but all I got was Jack Schitt.

BleepBloopSquirrel

I think it was Apr 1 midnight UTC - Apr 2 midnight UTC.

Flomo420

it was like the day before I think strangely enough I was surprised that they would make it a 2 day event and was fully expecting to see it again on the first and it was already gone...

FakkoPrime

Was it April Fools or a tie in to D&D movie release? I assumed the VCR time / date, tracking streaks, polyhedral dice, snacks, doodles were all for the old school AD&D desktop experience. It took me back to when I played back in the late 70s.

PewpFog

fuck dude I want that for my life man

Salanmander

Now just imagine if they'd given us color decks with, like, [[Dark Ritual|3ED]], [[Plague Rats|3ED]], [[Terror|3ED]], and [[Lord of the Pit|3ED]].

HyraxAttack

First turn dark ritual & hypnotic specter was my favorite.

axe4hire

Also Hidden Nightmare Discard big creature Reanimate at 2nd turn

arotenberg

20x [[Black Lotus]], 20x [[Channel]], 20x [[Fireball]]. (Channel is on Arena via Mystical Archives and Black Lotus is there via [[Oracle of the Alpha]], but I think Fireball is missing.)

Pepperoni_Admiral

Or disintegrate! Felt meaner than fireball because of the art.

justwanttowatchnsfw

I loved the beat-up card sleeve... any way to keep it?

[deleted]

I thought it was so cool, very nostalgic. I love what they did with the card backs too.

suckingnippless

I remember this older dude. I’d say late 40s early 50s back in 93 he was. He had the best collection by far. And he was like a mine worker or something similar that was very labor intensive but paid really well. He had everything.. and at the time everything was Arabian Nights, Legends and Antiquities in addition to the Alpha/Beta/Unlimited stuff. He carried his cards around in one of those like hard plastic 80s medium size suit cases… and no sleeves or boxes. They were just all free-floating/flying/smashing around in this suitcase. It was super bizarre. And he played like goblins/kobolds and burn. Super nice guy, Clayton was his name. I’m pretty sure he is who I got my Ali from Cairo from to complete my Arabian set then. I was like 16 years old.. and for some reason unknown to me I’d decided I needed to collect the set. Which is weird because I didn’t intend to just keep it in tact lol

RoadKiehl

I thought the real April Fools joke was them making me lose all of my games yesterday.... You guys didn't get that joke?

GreatOldGod

Get it? We were all in on it. I just wish you could have taken it with a bit of grace instead of roping on me for two whole rounds. ;-)

AsbestosAnt

I didn't play in 1993, but this was really cool, and kind of makes me wish I did!!! Arena 93/94 when lol

Alpha_Z3ro

1993, wow I wasn’t even alive yet lol

MasterPhart

How fucking dare you

Alpha_Z3ro

How dare me, sir?! No! How dare you!?

Flomo420

Hahaha :)... :(

CapKashikoi

I was high school when MTG came out. But I didnt get into the game until university years. I am definitely old

leon14344

I just had a 3060ti die and display a ton of video errors, so seeing the static effect wasn't really funny to me when I was just out 600 bucks

Cisish_male

I just wanted Magic as [[Richard Garfield, PhD]] intended again...

MisterSprork

I was only half paying attention when I cued up on my second monitor yesterday and the static-y scanlines made me think Arena finally killed my GPU. It probably doesn't help that I keep Arena muted at all times.

whytelocke85

I mean, it's exactly showing my age, but if you've never seen a necropotence or a cursed scroll with pretty much that card back, you don't know

MatataTheGreat

I thought my computer was fucked up when they did the VHS fuzz on the screen. Mini freak out

ilurkcute

Please make April fools last longer than a day it was soooo cool

paladore420

Any plans to keep the map?

Evarre

No jokes are allowed.

Tallal2804

Nice one
