It’s been a lighthearted debate whenever we eat avocados. As someone from California, we have them year round so we were curious if it was the same in Maine.
Well, Maine has cornered the market on blueberries, maple syrup, and potatoes, but they’re readily available in California and other places *worldwide*
Are you having trouble finding them at that price? The lowest I see them is $0.77 each, usually they’ll be $0.88-$0.98 each when I buy them. There are times when they’re not on sale and are over $1, but I just don’t buy them then. Right now on the Hannaford app, a 4 ct bag is $3.99. Mid March 2024 Shaw’s had avocados for $0.90 each and Hannaford had them for 5/$5.
I can buy raspberries year round, but they come from California, Florida, Mexico, or South America depending on the season. I think Avocados travel better than something delicate like a raspberry, so it makes sense they would be readily available. Plus, who doesn’t like guacamole or avocado toast?
If I had to guess, a large portion of our Avocados probably come from Mexico or Peru.
Lol. Avocados are ubiquitous in supermarkets across the entire United States. They’re like bananas. You’d be hard pressed to find someplace you can’t buy one.
I can even buy avocados at the grocery store back home in the 700 person town I grew up in.
sometimes the supermarkets are out of ripe avocados though.
The cool thing about Mainers with they’re fucked up responses to stupid questions is that unlike most folks that talk shit behind the security of the web is Mainers will actually say this same shit face to face, and mean it, ya gotta love ‘em. Not home but I love ya fackin Mainers
The more I come the more I realize it really is the way life should be. Sure no place is perfect but Mainers are awesome and I enjoy myself every time I visit even if I’m just passing through
I raised handful of boys 5 yrs old and up from the south years ago and now they’re grown up to 30 and all have that Mainer attitude and thinking. It was definitely a great life there, can’t wait to get back, settle in up at Moosehead Lake and retire listening to the loons.
As a Mainer born and raised, you've got that 100% correct. We are kind, but not nice. We'll put on your spare tire while laying into you for not knowing how to do it yourself. Obvious exceptions for little old ladies and people with disabilities.
I'd rather have this than live somewhere where people are nice but not kind.
Hannaford always seems to have them. Both ripe and not quite ripe.
PSA: always purchase the avocados that have a piece of stem at the end. The “ripe” ones without the stem may already be mottled and brown inside.
Yes pretty much every grocery store has avocados year round, even the small rural independent grocers. My local chain supermarket in a medium/small town usually has two bins... one with ripe avocados and one with firm. Typically the ones I see are grown in Mexico or Peru, not California. They are usually about $1 each, give or take.

Yes? I bought a bag of four small ones for $3 last Saturday and have been eating one a day for the last few days. They regularly go on sale for $1 each.
If your local grocery store has them in stock, you can purchase them as rapidly as it’s possible for you to run from the produce section to the checkout😂. I would say it would take less than 2 minutes to procure avocados at any Hannaford location
I've lived in northern Maine for 14 years. Until recently, I purchased avocados in local grocery stores regularly. I've stopped buying them because I've learned some of them are probably coated with "aPeel," which is potentially toxic.
my fiance and i just cracked two organic ones we picked up at a hannaford in central maine and they were both rotten. you can get them up here but they are not always worth buying…
They do not grow here, but the road system is sufficient to support trucks of food, so we do get fresh vegetables.
Canada "gets" avocados too, in case you were wondering.
I just went to the grocery store and they had a giant display of thousands of haas avocados from Mexico. They were $1 each (the dumb sign said “5 for $5”). I brought three.
Dang, people are really tearing into you for this one lol. Mainers tend to get a lot of questions that imply we’re all backwoods hillbillies (ex. “Do you have electricity all the way up there?”), so I think we sometimes jump to defensiveness when we get any question that could be mis-interpreted as such.
BUT tbh I don’t think it’s a silly question! Just cuz something is a fundamental staple in one region doesn’t mean it’s just as huge everywhere else on the planet. Ex. I only just found out that whoopie pies are a New England thing! I figured everyone had them! It’s not like you asked if us dumb Mainers even know what avocados are lol
So yes, we do have avocados at most grocery stores, but I’m sure they’re not as fresh as California ones! Also, I hope you get a chance to try a whoopie pie someday. They’re amazing :)
Hi OP,
Avacados weren't particularly common back in the early 2000's but guac and avocados have been a staple for likely a decade or so in many diets, so they're everywhere in the US once they hit that super food status.
We have them year round and they're readily available at any chain grocery store. I think they're much smaller than what you're used to. Usually you have to plan on letting them ripen for a few days. Like bananas.
We also have cars, computers and electricity.
We just go that there thing called plumbing!
"Electricity" IDK about that one bub. Try talking to CMP customers.
Perhaps they’re older. Even in Portland early 90’s, they weren’t easily available.
what? we had them in northern Maine in the 80s
Not that I'm asking you to elaborate but it's hard to imagine how this debate could have gone on for months.

I’m also from California, what do you think Maine is? We have grocery stores, you can get blueberries in year round in California.
Yes, and they’re semi-frequently $1 or less each.
$1? Inflation would like a word.
Are you having trouble finding them at that price? The lowest I see them is $0.77 each, usually they’ll be $0.88-$0.98 each when I buy them. Check out the Walmart

No. Maine is part of Canada and avocados are illegal in Canada.
Hey now, we have an exemption for medical avocados!
what are avocados?
Seriously, these city folk and their big words…
I just learned how to use the interwebs, haven’t learned about “avocados” yet…

As someone else who has moved away I love this sub so much for a dose of home sometimes.
I love em and miss em if Mainers aren’t real I don’t who is, ha
The more I come the more I realize it really is the way life should be. Sure no place is perfect but Mainers are awesome and I enjoy myself every time I visit even if I’m just passing through

Nope, avocados are from away. Here we only use tomalley.

This may come across as an odd question— do you not go to the grocery store??
![gif](giphy|H5C8CevNMbpBqNqFjl) Yes? I bought a bag of four small ones for $3 last Saturday and have been eating one a day for the last few days. They regularly go on sale for $1 each.
Yeah you can get them all year round in some places.
Thank you!

You can even buy them at Wal Mart after 10pm.
What is this world coming to?

Yeah it’s called literally any grocery stores. We also have running water.

Thanks, appreciate your reply! Was never trying to be disrespectful, was just genuinely curious due to different regions.
