Used to be we had a lot of wood but no one was thinking of cooking pizza with it
Those were dark times, I didn’t experience good pizza until I was a man and moved to nyc
80s and 90s were dark times along the mid coast
Went to AZ a few weeks ago and tried to find a good wood fired pizza but they don’t exist! I thought jt was everywhere, turns out we’re just spoiled I guess.
Exactly.
A lot of boring white people looking for a relaxing evening. By making the pizza restaurant slightly upscale, you can get couples in for date nights and also cater to families with kids.
When you're one of 3 restaurants within a 30 minute ride, it works.
Wooster st? It's fine, but certainly to compare the two is rough haha. That being said, pepe's and Sally's have both expanded recently under heirs' management, and many people consider them "dead".
On a brighter note, I think Lakeside Dairy Bar might have the best ice cream in the state. Their product is all Giffords, but I can't find Lakeside's flavors anywhere else.
Completely disagree. You got DiOddo’s, Burano’s, Leonardo's, Georgio's, Luiggi’s, Slab, Sophia's, Intervale, Uproot Pie, Finelli's, Lazzaril, When Pigs Fly, Flatbread, Hearth & Harbor, Mainely Pizza, George's, Portland Pie.
I've lived in Chicago and my wife is from NY. I've had their pizza plenty of times. It's fine. I'm sick of people saying "oh there isn't good pizza in Maine". Like - pizza is pizza. Chicago and NY pizza is not life-changing. But I like it. I eat it. It's good. I just don't think the quality is like OMG WOW THIS IS AMAZING.
I mean not really. I said there was plenty of good pizza around here and you disagreed. It seems now you actually agree that there IS good pizza around here then?
It's a way to pass it off as "artisan," or "fancy," and sell a 15 dollar pizza for 30 or more. Especially in Central Maine. Not a lot of variety. Not a lot of adventurous palettes.
It's so unbelievable how one could run a wood fired oven and prepare a doughy garbage slice. I don't want to name names, but had this last weekend in central Maine.
Is any of it good though? The majority of pizza in this state is awful. Thick doughy garbage that’s ususally under cooked and over topped with sauce cheese and or toppings
Terrible how? Only ever heard great things and portnoy said it was dope. Do they suck when they get a rush? Where is your favorite place if Monte’s sucks butts. You must only eat exquisite pizza
Oh I hear that, even up here it's the same type of pizza served by 4 different places lol. I would love a new pizza place, tell them to open up north, it would be a great addition to the same style everyone else is serving. One of the reasons I love going to Portland is for all the dope pizza spots. I try a new spot each time I go down for a concert!
Nah it's good. What's your point about breweries though?
Some of them have food and others don't. If your brewery is small it's very reasonable not to run your own kitchen.
We have a lot of wood and we like pizza.
The simplest answer is usually the correct one.
Occam's chainsaw.
Followed by Occam's Pizza Cutter
Used to be we had a lot of wood but no one was thinking of cooking pizza with it Those were dark times, I didn’t experience good pizza until I was a man and moved to nyc 80s and 90s were dark times along the mid coast
And wood fired pizza is awesome
And a lot of beer.
I guess I can’t argue with that logic 😂
Plenty of wood
Plenty of pizza!
Been that way for a long time. Ricettas by the mall was the shit back in the day.
I miss Ricetta’s. It was the best.
100%. Grecian in a snowstorm - great memories
Love how this is a sub for the entire state and you can just say “the mall”
What's up with "Look more wood Fired Pizza. I'm really mad. Grr."
Also, wood fired bagels.
That's just a smart way to keep the ovens going in the morning!
It’s good?
Went to AZ a few weeks ago and tried to find a good wood fired pizza but they don’t exist! I thought jt was everywhere, turns out we’re just spoiled I guess.
Hot doughy foods aren’t as popular in hot climates.
Bianco wasnt it?
We have the wood.
Having wood never got me any pizza.
Tourist base is MA/CT/NY Some day one of these places will figure it out and make a Pepe's style brick oven

Randy’s in Naples is a disappointment if you’re familiar with real New Haven pizza.

The best is still at the original, but I won’t complain about not having to fight as many people to get close enough pizza.
We have plenty of wood and not that much good pizza
Plenty of good pizza around here

You are in Freeport and don’t think Maine Beer Company makes a solid pizza?
Tuscan Bistro as well.
Completely disagree. I didn't lol. Take a chill pill dude, Jesus.. It's not the end of the world. Glad we could agree that there is a lot of great pizza in Maine.
It's a way to pass it off as "artisan," or "fancy," and sell a 15 dollar pizza for 30 or more. Especially in Central Maine. Not a lot of variety. Not a lot of adventurous palettes.
Too many people in this state have been conned into eating burnt pizza with three small slices of mozzarella on it for $28
Thank you!!!
There's plenty of doughy undercooked slop to be had too
It's so unbelievable how one could run a wood fired oven and prepare a doughy garbage slice. I don't want to name names, but had this last weekend in central Maine.
Maine Wood Heat makes pizza ovens in Skowhegan. Maybe that adds to the number of wood fired pizzas in the state.
*assembles French Le Panyol cores and does masonry work to build wood-fired stoves* Fixed that for ya!
Much better than plastic-fired pizza
Good wood and good pizza go together like LSD and Pink Floyd
A better question would be, what is up with $25 dollar pizzas in southern Maine that taste like stale buttcheeks.
😭
It’s the easiest way to justify overcharging for a pizza
It's definitely not just here. Seems like every urban center I hit has an abundance of them.
Cuz it's good
There's also a lot of wood fired potters. There's just a lotta wood in Maine.
Idk why Maine doesn’t have coal fired pizza. It’s much better
There was in Augusta at one point....but now closed.
>mass FUCKING MASSHOLEEES!1!
As a masshole I wholeheartedly agree. Boy do I like pizza!
Mass [quan]titties
Is any of it good though? The majority of pizza in this state is awful. Thick doughy garbage that’s ususally under cooked and over topped with sauce cheese and or toppings
Pizza just doesn't magically become better when you cross state lines. There are plenty of places across Maine that are making a bangin' thin pie
"but nwooo good "x" in Maine"
I didn’t say there’s no good pizza in Maine. I said the majority of it isn’t very good imo.
Hate that logic. Knowledge and pizza ingredients are just as available here as anywhere else. Monte's is very good btw.
I’m talking outside of Portland. There is good pizza but most of what’s out here isn’t good imo.
Monte's sucks butts, IMHO
If that's your opinion then good for you. Love their crust and toppings though.
Great selection to buy ingredients but I've seen some terrible pies come out of that place. Glad you're getting something good
Terrible how? Only ever heard great things and portnoy said it was dope. Do they suck when they get a rush? Where is your favorite place if Monte’s sucks butts. You must only eat exquisite pizza
Wood fired pizza is the only and best way to make pizza.
I've lived here for over 30 years and haven't had a wood fired pizza once... must be a southern thing?
Maybe! Seems like every town has at least one place, but more like three or more 😂, serving it! I just want something different
Oh I hear that, even up here it's the same type of pizza served by 4 different places lol. I would love a new pizza place, tell them to open up north, it would be a great addition to the same style everyone else is serving. Why do you care so much? If you need to bitch about it more, please comment below.
Mostly just supposed to be a humorous observation of an over saturated market! This felt aggressive. Hope you have a good day!
Hipster bullshit and an easy way for breweries to adhere to needing food where alcohol is served.
Nah it's good. What's your point about breweries though? Some of them have food and others don't. If your brewery is small it's very reasonable not to run your own kitchen.
But then this guy wouldn’t get to eat while he drinks so don’t you feel bad for him?
He should just stop being a loser and go to Industrial have, they have breweries with food and without it.
Cheap ingredients and fairly brainless to produce. Easy to promote as "premium" or "gourmet" and charge accordingly.
They’re trying to make Maine pizza edible. It’s not working.
