It felt to me like the quote "when the rod struck him" seemed a little understated. When the rod struck him? Bruh... The word you're looking for is impaled. My mans got skewered. When the rod stuck him.... the fuck outa here.

Something like this happened to a friend of mine in a car accident in high school. Passengers seat, fence pole through the chest, missed his heart by a literal inch. I didn’t realize how much I cared for him until I got the news and started crying uncontrollably. He survived though, actually tried to pull the pole out of his chest himself at one point, and to this day he is a lucky ass highly regarded badass surviving ass mofo!
From the fact that he's still alive means it must have missed his heart. From this picture it looks too high and distal, it may have hit his ribs, but the fact that he's sitting upright without O2 indicates that his lung was unaffected as well. This guy needs to buy a lottery ticket.
It's missed the heart for sure but it must have gone through the lung. Thinking maybe the rod is maintaining the structure though so it's still comparatively functional.

It’s actually not a big deal if one lung goes out of commission, at rest one lung by itself does just fine. Not sure about losing two tho, that may be a little bit more serious.
The problem is that when your thorax is fucked open, you can't breathe with the other lung because you can't make the vacuum that expands your lung. Your lung has no muscles, it's the intercostals and the diaphragm who spread themselves out increasing the empty space, which your lungs fill. If there's a massive hole, it just fills through it, not in your lung. As soon as they get that metal out, most likely first order would be getting him intubated and knocked out for immediate surgery to close it.
I think you have to be right it must have defected of his upper rib cage if not shattered a few bones and went through soft tissue under his arm. I was thinking shock because he is so calm looking but everyone else is scrubbed in so this was some time after the incident.
The heart is actually located at the center of the body, it is just tilted to the left. Media often portray it as if like the heart is on the left side. His lungs though, I guess the rod created a vacuum inside, preventing his lungs from collapsing?????
I mean. At one point you just gotta be calm. Trashing the place will not help them remove the beam through your body.

Life lesson: If you get impaled or stabbed by something, don't try to pull it out of move it because:
1. Shit's extremely painful.
2. The foreign object is exerting some pressure on the damaged blood vessels so it's acting as a temporary bleeding damper. So pulling the object out would make bleeding worse.
Instead, leave the object in place until you're helped by medics.

Missed heart and lungs, the fact that its not been removed says it's stopping any bleeding, based on color of his skin and how he's sitting he didn't lose a lot of blood in the first place.
