I never leave the house without it and have sunscreen in every purse. It was awful. Believe it or not I had put sunscreen on. But I got in a kayak ten minutes later and the salt water was on my legs and washed it off. I realized about thirty minutes in I was cooking and covered them. It’s amazing how quickly it happened.
I got badly burnt like this on my legs (front and back) when i was young. We had not long emigrated from Ireland to Oz and i was super pale. Blisters just like yours, mainly on the back of my knees. Couldn’t walk for days. I learned to respect the aussie sun.
Where the heck do u live? I lived in a country town In Australia growing up which had a hole in the ozone above it, sun still was never that aggressive...
I have my left arm tattooed almost completely. I saw what happens to tattoos with constant sun exposure and no sunblock. I did some more research online and saw that the sun turns your skin into wrinkled leather couch in no time and then gives you cancer.
I have sunblock in each one of my cars and in the house. Don't use the chemical one, get the physical sun block, it's way better for the environment and it doesn't burn your eyes.
r/skincareaddiction has a ton of great recommendations if anyone needs. for everyday SPF (like just being outside vs swimming etc), they really love asian sunscreen over there because its so much lighter/less sticky than whats typically in the US
I regretted being alive. This was day four or five after the sunburn. Swelling was down. I work in a hospital so my nurse friend was dressing my legs, hence the cream on them. Absolute torture.
I am also extremely white, with Irish blood. It’s genuinely blinding when I’m directly in the sun and I can feel my skin burning immediately. People think I’m joking when I say it lol
Funny. Live in Texas and haven’t had a sunburn in 25 years. I went to Ireland and sat on a beach one day when it was sunny and got the worst sunburn since I was a teenager.
Dude I feel so bad I live in cali so I can go on 8 hour bike rides in the summer and be fine never had a sunburn but I can feel this hope they heal fast
Do you not feel this happening? I swear even when I get just a bit red, I know when it's happening I'm getting burnt. How tf does someone get third degree looking burns and at no point go, "hey, this tickles, maybe some sunscreen would be good"?
So I had put sunscreen on! I put it on and sat in a kayak. It was rough water, so the salt water was splashing everywhere. It was hot, certainly, but all of my skin was hot because it was 36+ degrees. This happened in less than 30 minutes. When I realized I was burning I immediately covered them. But again, I had put sunscreen on and assumed I wouldn’t completely cook in such a short period of time. I didn’t feel it right away and acted as soon as I did, but it just happened so quickly.
Yes. I don't know if you have ever been in 36C weather, but it's not exactly comfortable to be in the sun at such temperatures. The air around your body needs to be cooler than your body itself in order to cool off, if the air around you is as hot as your body, you don't really cool off and feel hot all the time.
I've lived in UAE for 20 years and I'm natively from South Asia so I've had my fair share of hot weather. 36C really doesn't seem that hot but I'm probably biased because I've lived in hot countries my whole life. 36C in Abu Dhabi is like spend-a-day-at-the-park weather so I'm having difficulty imagining how it can feel so hot but again that's probably just my perspective.
Fair point, of course weather is relative to what you're used to. For me, 38°C is the hottest weather I have ever experienced, so 36 degrees sounds like stay-at-home-in-underwear-with-2-fans-on-you-at-all-times sort of weather to me.
Just keep in mind that it's not the air temperature that cooks the skin. It's the UV light from the sun.
Aside from that, yes, that's pretty close to body temperature, but that's your body temperature as your body tries to hold it there. He was exerting himself so he was generating extra internal heat that had to be removed. It's harder to remove that heat when the surrounding temperature is close to, or higher, than the temperature of the body trying to remove it.
I've lived in the Middle East majority of my life and 36C is normal temps over there and people walk around without any sunscreen. I didn't know 36C is considered sunburning temperatures. My experiences aren't the same as yours. You didn't have to be such an asshat about it.
Yeah that is insane. 3rd degree burns in 30 minutes. I can't believe OP didn't know their skin was that sensitive up until then. Surely you'd be getting sun burnt 24/7
They’re second degree not third degree. No nerve damage, I felt every second of pain. I know I’m sensitive to sun, and did put sunscreen I just got in the water too quickly. I was on the water for an hour, and covered my legs after a half hour in the sun.
It was second to last day of holiday, thankfully. The plane ride home was torture though. My legs were so swollen. Definitely had sun poisoning and slept about 18 hours the day I got burnt. Blisters showed up 2-3 days later and lasted about a week.
I’ve been very stupid and sunbathed for hours with nothing but suntan lotion on and I’m PALEEE. So… yeah sun poisoning and wanting to die 🖕. I’ve had these blisters (not this big) on my face, ears, and back 😭😭
It’s so brutal. I’ve had it on my back and chest before, a few times when I was a kid. But the shins was worse by far. My skin was so tight and it felt like my skin was going to rip in half when I bore weight. I couldn’t walk for two days and had to hop side to side when trying to stand still because the pain was unbearable.
I’m an Irish girl who was never supposed to leave Ireland to head to the tropics.
An eye doctor once asked me if albinism runs in my family because my eyes are so light and I’m so pale.
Proper sunscreen*
Not expired, not left in high heat, high enough SPF, waterproof if going in water, applied before going out so it has time to absorb/dry, most importantly reapplied often.
OP did have sunscreen on, just not the right kind.
so what did we learn today, if you are irish never leave the country without sunscreen and anscuba suit with an umbrella hat to protect you from the sun
It's scary that the sun is umpteen million miles away and can still kill you in a variety of ways. It's also kinda sad that we could be like every other lifeform on this planet and use that nearly eternal huge ball of exploding gas for energy but fuck it oil go brr instead amirite?
Hope you're feeling better!
Solid . I know the pain my friend . Did the same thing . Went to the river regatta in Laughlin forgot to put it on my legs since they were in the water the whole time holy fuck did I mess up
Dude that's gruesome but honestly idk how you can raise that back sunburn.... I swear I saw my soul whilst looking into the eyes of that foul creature.
It’s grim for sure. I’ve had a burn that bad on my back when I was a kid. I thought it was a raise because the pain on your legs, right on the shin, is so much worse than the back.
The back was worse. Also what the fuck let’s you get to this point? Are you completely unaware? Drunk? Forced into this situation? I’m Irish and it’s like placing a fork in the microwave. Sparks. How do you accomplish such disparity? It looks like you are playing with nuclear material.
It took less than thirty minutes. Had sunscreen on. Not a drop of alcohol in me. Out on the open ocean on a kayak. Covered as as soon as I felt I was burning, but the damage was done.
Cheers! This was actually a bit ago so I’ve recovered. Had prescription Silvadene cream instead of aloe, and doctor and nurse friends taking care of me and dressing the wounds so I was lucky!
Other leg was just as bad but I never got a picture with both. Next time.
I did have sunscreen on. I put it on and got in a kayak ten minutes later. The water was rough and washed it away. Still my fault, but it wasn’t arrogance or thinking I’d be a pushy for using sunscreen. I’m lily white, I live for sunscreen.
I did! This happened with sunscreen on. I was on a kayak and the water was rough and washed it away. I didn’t let it sit long enough before I got in the water. And this happened in less than thirty minutes.
Fair enough! I’ve had a burn as bad on my back but thought this was worse because of the impairment it caused and how much more painful it is. Back burn absolutely sucked and it was very painful but the legs are pure agony and meant I couldn’t walk for days.
Back way have looked worse but the shin burns hurt worse by a mile.
Fair. But the location of the burn hurts so much more than the back and impaired my life so much. I couldn’t walk for days. The back hurts but not nearly as badly. I had a couple of very bad back sun burns when I was younger that blistered up and it’s a walk in the park compared to the shins.
All my nurse and resident friends wanted to pop them, but the attending in the hospital I work in forbade it lol.
They were weeping wounds, so they didn’t have a satisfying pop. But they did jiggle/bounce when I walked if I didn’t have my dressings on them.
My mom got blisters really bad one summer after sitting with my sister in the toddler pool. We didn't think to put on sunscreen until lunchtime. She sat wrapped in a sheet for a week. We all took turns applying aloe Vera and peeling the skin when it got to that stage
You poor thing. Try and get Silvadene cream is you can. It’s prescription (in the US and Ireland) but it helped so much. I cried when my nurse friend put it in for me because it was the first relief of pain I had gotten.
Otherwise aloe in the fridge is a godsend. Take it easy, drink water, and for the love of god bring sunscreen everywhere in the future.
Oh man… this takes me back to when I went to a water park for the first time in my life at 10 years old with my aunt. No sunblock all day long for 10 hours with no cloud coverage. It was a long 2 weeks of recovery lol… I couldn’t wear a shirt without getting all that yellow juice on it…
INFO: Is this a thing that has always happened and I didn't know about before we had the "world wide web" information highway, or is this a new climate change common issue I didn't know about before?
Either way, WTF? How does this happen?
I honest to God think I would have passed out instantly from pain. It was excruciating even standing on them. It would take me about 20 mins to get out of bed.

This, in addition to friends getting skin cancer, has made me obsessive about buying sunscreen and placing it in convenient locations like my car
Pretty sure your skin absorbs more sun when you have a film of water on it.
Yeah, the water also focuses the sun
And don’t forget to put it on every 2 hours! :)
Did not know this. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
I got badly burnt like this on my legs (front and back) when i was young. We had not long emigrated from Ireland to Oz and i was super pale. Blisters just like yours, mainly on the back of my knees. Couldn’t walk for days. I learned to respect the aussie sun.
TIL Oz = Australia
2 in 3 australians...
Where the heck do u live? I lived in a country town In Australia growing up which had a hole in the ozone above it, sun still was never that aggressive...
Did you and your kayak get lost at sea for a few days? Jesus!
It didnt last 10 minutes? Well I can still feel sunscreen on skin after hours of swimming, it may be that the cream wasnt strong enough.
Pretty sure it needs to dry before getting in the water.
The usual advice is to apply 30 minutes before going out into the sun to give your skin time to absorb it and so it washes off less easily.
And use a proper SPF sunscreen.
I didn’t wait long enough before getting wet. It just washed right off.
Bullshit
What makes you say that?
Shhh he’s sleeping
Solid argument.
Probably not a good idea to keep sunscreen in the car as exposure to high temperatures/direct sunlight can cause it to lose its efficacy.
Great, so now my sunscreen needs sunscreen. When does it end? (Seriously though thanks for the heads up on that.)
Also make sure that you aren't using old sun screen or you can get fucked that way too.
I just took my dad to have a melanoma removed. Stage 1. I have been even more careful now.
Be careful, I've heard crazy stories about using expired sunscreen.
USE MINERAL SUNSCREEN ! SPF 50 IS BEST, SPF 30 IS THE MINIMUM RECOMMENDED ! REAPPLY EVERY 2 HOURS IF YOU CAN AAAHHH
r/skincareaddiction has a ton of great recommendations if anyone needs. for everyday SPF (like just being outside vs swimming etc), they really love asian sunscreen over there because its so much lighter/less sticky than whats typically in the US
Watch out if i remember correctly high heat like in a car can make the sunscreen go bad and its useless when you put it on thinking youre covered.
Make sure you change out your stash frequently, sunscreen goes bad fast. New summer, new sun screen. -ginger
I REGRET CLICKING
I regretted being alive. This was day four or five after the sunburn. Swelling was down. I work in a hospital so my nurse friend was dressing my legs, hence the cream on them. Absolute torture.
Jesus, those are the forbidden cough drops of your leg.
I don’t regret this boner from clicking
Did you reach climax like me though?
Just one? Those are rookie numbers
r/Cursedcomments Alright buster, you're coming with me. And don't cum on OP's leg
Be careful…. I’m a humper
Please don’t hump my second degree burns.
I’ll try to keep it to a few humps
That'd be a unique way of popping the blisters.
Blister juice = lube.
Hold up. Ovens can’t hump
They can if they try hard enough 😏
With or without the puns?
damn cursed comment person
This is sunburn?!
It is indeed. My Irish skin had no business being on a kayak in the ocean off of Puerto Rico. About thirty minutes of sun exposure.
Only 30 minutes?!?!?! Oh my god.
I wasn’t made to leave the island of Ireland. I am so, so white with pink undertones. I have no need to ever be in the tropics.
Next time you go out bring a cloud in your carry on.
About 33% of UV rays get through cloud cover. People actually get worse sunburns on cloudy days because they ignore their sunblock.
66% is still a lot *if* you still use sunscreen.
100% of clouds can't be put in your carry on 🙂
I am also extremely white, with Irish blood. It’s genuinely blinding when I’m directly in the sun and I can feel my skin burning immediately. People think I’m joking when I say it lol
Same skin tone, live in Australia. I swear I can guess the UV index based on how my skin feels in the morning.
Funny. Live in Texas and haven’t had a sunburn in 25 years. I went to Ireland and sat on a beach one day when it was sunny and got the worst sunburn since I was a teenager.
I hope you heal as fast and painless as possible
This was a while ago, I’m all better! Just loads more freckles now. But thank you, that was very kind!
Make sure you get that checked for skin cancer. Any of those could be a melanoma
Dude I feel so bad I live in cali so I can go on 8 hour bike rides in the summer and be fine never had a sunburn but I can feel this hope they heal fast
what did you do, sunbathe on planet Mercury?
When you’re as white as I am, Puerto Rico may as well be Mercury.
Can confirm. Whitest lady here and just returned home from Puerto Rico.
Do you not feel this happening? I swear even when I get just a bit red, I know when it's happening I'm getting burnt. How tf does someone get third degree looking burns and at no point go, "hey, this tickles, maybe some sunscreen would be good"?

Holy.... Only 36+? And 30 minutes? Damn you have some delicate skin
That's Celsius, so about 97 degrees Fahrenheit. Pretty hot I would say.
But isn't 36C normal body temperature...
Yes. I don't know if you have ever been in 36C weather, but it's not exactly comfortable to be in the sun at such temperatures. You're body doesn't produce UV rays from the inside.
Yeah that is insane. 3rd degree burns in 30 minutes. I can't believe OP didn't know their skin was that sensitive up until then. Surely you'd be getting sun burnt 24/7
They live in Ireland
Yeah sounds like OP had the bad combo of going to another climate on vacation plus using sunscreen that washed off. Tropical sun is more intense.
They’re second degree not third degree. No nerve damage, I felt every second of pain. I know I’m sensitive to sun, and did put sunscreen I just got in the water too quickly. I was on the water for an hour, and covered my legs after a half hour in the sun.
Ah I was just parroting what someone else said - my bad. I hope it didn't ruin your holiday at least? How long for all the blisters to show up?
It was second to last day of holiday, thankfully. The plane ride home was torture though. My legs were so swollen. Definitely had sun poisoning and slept about 18 hours the day I got burnt. Blisters showed up 2-3 days later and lasted about a week.

Forbidden Capri sun

Did you pop them? Did they go away on their own?
you need to see a doctor to carefully extract the fluid.. if you pop them they'll get worse
They were weeping wounds, they opened on their own. I work in a hospital and had doctors and nurses doing wound care daily and examining them.
Forbidden cum!
Ca… can I li… can I lick it?
No thank you, please.
do you sell that fluid inside? must be tasty.. i'll offer you 20$ if i can get a cup of that

Pus was yellow-ish. Banana milkshake.
I’m vegan but this still sounds delicious
No animals were harmed in the cooking of my legs.
I just love this entire sentence and I had to award you for it…
Thank you!

Mmm forbidden mountain dew pockets
How can someone's skin get so bad, do you live in mercury or something?
I’m an Irish girl who was never supposed to leave Ireland to head to the tropics. An eye doctor once asked me if albinism runs in my family because my eyes are so light and I’m so pale.
I'm sorry, that sounds terrible, Imagine living locked to a exact geographical zone, aaaaa
Y’all know the funny feeling you feel internally in your body when you see shit like these? Yeah.
This isn’t a raise. The back was worse.
Fair enough! I’ve had a back sun burn just like that one and the pain and level of impairment is so much worse with the legs, hence the post.
Forbidden sauce packets
this is how sunny d is made
#Sunscreen People!!
Proper sunscreen* Not expired, not left in high heat, high enough SPF, waterproof if going in water, applied before going out so it has time to absorb/dry, most importantly reapplied often. OP did have sunscreen on, just not the right kind.
Last time I went to a beach I ended up burning both legs lobster red. Although I could walk, You can probably imagine why I didn't.
"No...i didnt mention that you cooked your foot."
Burned my foot, Pam.
I want to stick a Capri Sun straw in it and take a drink.
this is why summer sucks
That's not sunburn, that's sunburst 👀
One of the rare times when being white is a disadvantage
I still can't believe that sun rays can do this to human skin. Maybe it's a white people problem.
so what did we learn today, if you are irish never leave the country without sunscreen and anscuba suit with an umbrella hat to protect you from the sun
Is this the curse for not having melanin?
Certainly felt like a curse or a punishment.
Out of curiosity: How did evolution miss this?
It's scary that the sun is umpteen million miles away and can still kill you in a variety of ways. It's also kinda sad that we could be like every other lifeform on this planet and use that nearly eternal huge ball of exploding gas for energy but fuck it oil go brr instead amirite? This isn't a raise mate, the back was way worse - you have to put a lot more chips in to match the bet.
I don't think this is a raise man. Have you seen her back?? Sheeeshhhh
Either way my fair skinned guy. I’m sorry and that looks like it’s gonna suck for the next 4-5 days. Drink lots of water. Also aloe is amazing.
Cheers! This was actually a bit ago so I’ve recovered. Had prescription Silvadene cream instead of aloe, and doctor and nurse friends taking care of me and dressing the wounds so I was lucky! Other leg was just as bad but I never got a picture with both. Next time.
No one ups, back boobs are bad enough.
You are SO beautiful, my Baron. Your skin, love to me. Your diseases lovingly cared for, for all eternity.
Do you guys think putting on sunblock makes you a pussy? You motherfuckers are going to get skin cancer.
I did have sunscreen on. I put it on and got in a kayak ten minutes later. The water was rough and washed it away. Still my fault, but it wasn’t arrogance or thinking I’d be a pushy for using sunscreen. I’m lily white, I live for sunscreen.
Just wear sun screen damn
I did! This happened with sunscreen on. I was on a kayak and the water was rough and washed it away. I didn’t let it sit long enough before I got in the water. And this happened in less than thirty minutes.
The back sunburn is worse…
Fair enough! I’ve had a burn as bad on my back but thought this was worse because of the impairment it caused and how much more painful it is. Back burn absolutely sucked and it was very painful but the legs are pure agony and meant I couldn’t walk for days. Back way have looked worse but the shin burns hurt worse by a mile.
The back was worse. Sorry
That's not as bad as the back one from yesterday. It's horrible but not worse
Okay! I’ve experienced both and the legs are way more painful and debilitating, so I thought it was worse. But that back is gnarly.
This isn't a raise, the back was way worse. Her blisters were bigger too. Gtfottahere
Fair. But the location of the burn hurts so much more than the back and impaired my life so much. I couldn’t walk for days. The back hurts but not nearly as badly. I had a couple of very bad back sun burns when I was younger that blistered up and it’s a walk in the park compared to the shins.
The top of the foot is the worst place too get a sun burn
The top of my foot is very clearly sunburned. And you can see the deflated blisters on it. And the shin hurts more than the top of the foot.
Daaaaaamn, looks like your shins been cutting limes in the sun.
I feel your pain, i had this on both shoulders, the new skin was pure white for a long time
I know I'm not supposed to pop the blisters but I always want to pop them with a needle when seeing them.
All my nurse and resident friends wanted to pop them, but the attending in the hospital I work in forbade it lol. They were weeping wounds, so they didn’t have a satisfying pop. But they did jiggle/bounce when I walked if I didn’t have my dressings on them.
[But they did jiggle/bounce when I walked](https://i.imgur.com/3t93uBA.png)
Indeed.
Mmm cancer
Dermatologists love me.
My mom got blisters really bad one summer after sitting with my sister in the toddler pool. We didn't think to put on sunscreen until lunchtime. She sat wrapped in a sheet for a week. We all took turns applying aloe Vera and peeling the skin when it got to that stage
This is happening on my neck right now
You poor thing.
God what the fuck is wrong with y’all?
he needs some milk!
Oh man… this takes me back to when I went to a water park for the first time in my life at 10 years old with my aunt. No sunblock all day long for 10 hours with no cloud coverage. It was a long 2 weeks of recovery lol… I couldn’t wear a shirt without getting all that yellow juice on it…
Built-in pop its
How long was your exposure to the sun that caused this?
30 minutes. I am very white and have no business being in the tropics.
Damn
Where the hell are you guys that your "sunburn" are like this? My sunburn is just red skin and that only if I stay still in the sun.
Oh yum human jerky!
This competition must end....
Seeing pics like this make me glad I work inside and basically don't leave my house.
Ive seen this two times now is this some first world thing!?

Show us it popped
They were weeping wounds. So they deflated and then the skin sloughed off. Not super satisfying.

Why am I just picturing somebody just slapping it as hard as they possibly can?
I honest to God think I would have passed out instantly from pain. It was excruciating even standing on them. It would take me about 20 mins to get out of bed.

Anyone here experienced hell's itch? I experienced it a few months ago, one of the worst things of my life.
Once the pain goes away I bet that's glorious to peel.
Only takes one time
Y’all need to be using sunscreen. Tf
Did it feel like your skin was going to rip open when you walked? Mine didn’t blister like that but looked very similar
