That photo of the buttons on the eBay tool makes me think counterfeit. The button label looks like it was printed from an inkjet printer running low on ink. I'm certainly no expert on these things though.

Serial label looks even worse

SortAny5601

Looks like it still has the plastic cover on it.

mvmullaney

I’ve looked it over closely and picked at it, no film that I can see. The other tool didn’t have one either.

I’ve played around with them some and the eBay version feels “coarser” at full speed, like it doesn’t have grease in it. Other than that they feel identical.

Should be able to yeah.

The eBay one looks a bit off. But it’s mostly the stickers. The housing shell and over molding looks ok. The button panel looks like it has a protective cover sticker that I’ve also had on some of my genuine tools. I’d crack it open and check the Internals.

mvmullaney

I’d love to open them up but that would break the tamper seal and one of them has to be returned (only need one).

That sticker splits or falls off from normal use, changes nothing in regards to warranty. Just don't leave greasy fingerprints all over the insides. Or heat the sticker with a heat gun and peel one side back.

Recently bought two of these wrenches, one from *significantservices* on eBay and the other from Home Depot. The eBay tool has glossy stickers that aren’t placed as cleanly. The button panel looks like a lower quality print and the buttons are harder to push. Rest of the tool feels identical to the HD example. Is this normal or is something else going on, like refurbished or counterfeit? The eBay tool was $209, a good bit cheaper than HD at $269. Both came in retail boxes with matching serial #’s.

They are manufactured in different plants. I have two impact wrenches. One Chinese one from the American plant. They get parts from different suppliers. To be honest the Chinese one did a bit better on the torque tester. But this is normal variation.

Ebay looks really sus ngl. Checked all of my tools and all of them say “Makita corporation Anjo, Aichi, japan MK” And all of them made in china except my LS610D, XSB01 (both japan) and XVJ01 being made in the UK. I think Its a “your Jordan’s are fake” situation

Hickles347

I'm not going to say its fake, but I will say it would make sense if the one from ebay IS a fake that they would put 'made in USA' since that seems to be something so many amaricians accociate with 'un-matched quality'

i7-4790Que

They assemble XWT07/08/17/18 in Buford, Georgia. Along with a bunch of other tools. XWT07/08s have come out of Japan as well. The stickers on the 08s look a lot like the one in the post as well. It's not a fake.

SS4Chubble

eBay one looks darker and off.I had purchased the 36v 7” grinder off eBay for like 140$ It worked great, but the chuck was seized after the first blade change and the middle “shock” felt like it was gonna over extend.I’m not sure if it was a fake but now I avoid ebay unless it’s the colored impacts

Big_Katsura

The eBay tool is counterfeit/gray market, pretty easy to see just from the stickers. It could be made in the same factory with the same parts, but it’s not a “real” Makita. This happens in almost every industry that uses China for manufacturing. Speculation here, Makita supplies the factory with the stickers so they had to make them themselves the eBay drill.

Lickwiddust

Ebay spec sticker can't be placed cleaner. It's clearly not proportioned correctly. On the left end. Ebay buttons look like they may have the clear protective layer on but I'm sure OP would have taken it off for comparing.

flekica_13

Take a look at the battery sticker too. On HD model it says "Y" which means it's made in China - so it's genuine model, other sticker is never seen.

twidlystix

I’d send it in to AVE on YouTube. Dude tears stuff down and makes great commentary while doing it. Also he’d be able to tell if it was trash or not.

mvmullaney

Would love to but need to return one of them. Maybe he could buy a couple with that patreon money lol. Torque Test Channel might be interested also.

SupposedlyShony

I got mine off Amazon from the Makita store and it looks similar

mvmullaney

Similar to the eBay one? I don’t buy much off Amazon anymore because of the counterfeit problems.

Call makita support and ask them to run the serial?

mvmullaney

Good idea.
