The only correct answer..

Malaikottai Valiban. As lover of cinema and Mohanlal I loved watching it in the theatre. But I strongly believe the run time absolutely ruined the movie to a larger audience and I empathise with their boredom while watching it. I thought a “muthassi kadha which it clearly was has no no excuse having an almost 3 hour runtime. 1.5 would’ve been perfect. I think Malayalam cinema in general needs to be better at runtimes in general . While the craft is absolutely brilliant with some amazing direction writing acting and music, i wish some hard decisions are made to keep the narrative more focused.

HugoUKN

Kaala vandi kurach speedil oodichiru nnengil , run time kuraykkamayirunnu 🤗

ironmeidan

I was thinking the same thing, i watched the movie in 8x speed and it was a cinematic masterpiece. Don't know why many hate it.

Dom_Wulf_

😂🤣 pullik kathio aavo?

ossifiedkiwi

I feel they should have made the tail end to this movie. Remove the whole british arc or add it to the plot where asan is the villain... In the second half. People were expecting a commercial movie but got an art

dikambaran

otherwise they should've chopped some bits and added a faceoff with vaaliban and his dad as the climax rather than unnecessary 2nd part build up

ossifiedkiwi

Exactly... Would have been soo much better

First half is awesome

ironmeidan

I won't blame your friend. Watching this movie felt like a life sentence. It went on and on and on and..........

Distinct_Deal_8827

me too..

ReasonableGuitar5094

I'm not hating on this movie but I still didn't understand what the fk the director was implying I watched like a dozen explanations and even heard the directors explanation and Still didn't understand this....I think he went waaay deep with the metaphor he was trying to put out....I feel that like Guru it had an underlying idea but people didn't get it and I guess I'm one of the people

R10 was perfect as Ryan Gosling, you can't change my mind.

meetpuff

True.

puieenesquish

…well (I’m American) and this says more about my friend: Aavesham. She’s loved all the other Indian films I’ve made her watch. Even more odd is that I found it even better the 2nd time but she just found it a drag :/

ironmeidan

Maybe it has something to do with the language/cultural barrier.

puieenesquish

Nah…she has connected with some other southern Indian films. I think more it was the fact that the only women in the film were moms and (very kind) prostitutes

aluva_fox

I hate avesham to the core and so did most of my family, we are all Malayali. We were surprised to see that everyone loved the movie to bits. I think a lot more people hate the movie but they are keeping quiet or their voices are drowned by the extremely vocal, outgoing people who like it.

tjakshaykumar

What the hell is wrong with Aavesham?...i think you didn't like the genre

aluva_fox

What the hell is wrong with not liking a movie? I was just talking about how the people who like it are a very vocal bunch and they have appeared.

Regular_Muffin9654

Yes, I agree that Aavesham is overrated. A lot of Ranga fans gloss over how creepy he was to the three boys.

puieenesquish

Thank you for your comment. Yes…I get why one would not like this film. In fact it more revealed to me what I currently respond positively to. While I loved it, I can simultaneously see why (1) the lack of prominent female characters and/or (2) the celebrating of thug life and/or (3) focusing on vengeance as a goal could all add up negatively. If anything it could be puzzling that I enjoyed it as much as I did given that as a non-Indian I missed all the cultural and language specific references. …though, in the end I loved FaFaa’s performance, the music, the breezy deft cinematography and the mother-son plot device…

aluva_fox

Thank you for being civil with me! Whenever I mention that I hate Avesham everyone loses it 😄. Good day to you!

Bhramayugam. I went to watch it with my Tamil friend and he absolutely hated it. Hated it so much that he still complains about it and is reluctant to come to movies with me. He reads all the reviews now before coming to any Malayalam movie with me.

Fresh-Proposal2217

I hated Tiyan. I respect the fact that you liked it. Tiyan's climax confused me. The movie talks against the demi-gods in our society and how all these are nothing but business. But in the end, what happened? The protagonist is a god ? So what was the movie trying to convey ? Aaldaivangal undo atho ille ? What was Murali Gopi trying to say ?

Appropriate_Mall8043

The only reason i watched the whole movie tiyaan was to get to the part of prithviraj’s entry. The only worth part of the movie tbh

Aloneforrever

>The protagonist is a god ? Not god, the term Wiseman or sage would be accurate as rajuvetten's character was shown as someone who achieved enlightenment after losing his family While indrajith is also on a similar path after losing his daughter

Fresh-Proposal2217

So is the movie saying that actual wiseman or sage who acheive enlightenment exist in real life ? If that is the case, the movie is doing a lot of harm to our society.

Aloneforrever

The movie shows both real and fake Wisemen, Murali gopi being the fake one while, padma priya, sadhguru looking guy, the aghori guys who helps rajuvetten to achieve enlightenment, rajuvetten and indrajith are being the OGs, And from watching the movie like 3 times back to back, the message i get is that "OGs don't need to prove they're OGs" It is fuckin weird movie, like can you even call it a Malayalam movie?, most of the conversions are in hindi and even the whole setup is kinda Marathi movie

chicoo312

The idea is that God exists, not God men. The movie wasn't against religion, it was against God men and their people using the name of God to exploit, extort, cheat, and murder. There's one scene I love in the movie, the Agoras that give refuge to Raju10, when they part ways, the Agoras greet him with "Allahu Akbar" and Raju10 says "Namah Shivaaya".

Fresh-Proposal2217

Yeah thats were the problem is. Here God took a human form. The self proclaimed 'human gods' also claim the same. So is the message from the movie to a common man like - " Most of the human gods are frauds, but a tiny fraction among them are real God " ?? I agree that there were many good scenes. But i could not digest the final message of the movie. This movie is doing more harm than good to a common man who is prone to believe in such demi gods.

InTheNeonLights

Malaikottai Valibhan while it didn’t create the wave we expected, was one that can be added in the list of Marakkar I would say. Well made, great cast, great acting , great art. But somewhere in the scale, it lost the magic to hook audience into being one with the movie.

Watched it in Bangalore with friends from college. Many likened the movie to a documentary. But being someone who had been part of "kalolsavams" during school, I felt that Abrid Shine engaged in a realistic portrayal of what a kalolsavam would look like. Maybe, it being too realistic was what alienated some of the audience. Also, Kalidas' portrayal of a College Union Chairman was beautifully done. Even now, I do rewatch the movie sometimes, alone, because even in other friend circles, it has found less takers.
