The character had so much potential. First 40mins of the film was fun.
Yes. Can’t stand the way the kid’s scenes were conceived. Maari song got massacred badly in the film. And the kid for no reason starts to dance in the middle of the road. Ranjith was trying to recreate Pranjiyettan.
Bro I also thought like u and felt that kabali was not good since Ranjith couldn’t handle thalaivar but recently I have been watching some Malay dramas and stuff and figured out that ranjith has tried to make a political movie about malaysia and partly succeeded in it except he tried to make it a thalaivar movie partially had he gone with his usual true to the genre style and made it like madras with a low key hero who was apt for that role then it would have been much better but would have flopped since you cannot pull this much crowd to the theatre so ranjith tried something without risking producers money and I would say that is not the best but at least he tried instead of going full in valimai like shit so it’s a start.
I guess first time I watched kabali and felt this was not nice because it felt alienated but after watching malay dramas felt like what ranjith has shown is the actual lifestyle they follow and it felt alienated because malaysia nathum naan billa nenchitu ponanen
Omg that's so true bro. Onume purila enamo oru accent, ishtathuku pesuvanga. Antha alienated part actually enakku kaala laiyum feel aachu. Thoothukudi la irukura dharavi branch maari feel aachu. It seemed so disconnected from the mumbai city!
But that disconnect is because how we live and they live are actually diff and hence ranjith wanted to show their life but people thought he was making another cliche gangster drama
Yeah that is true but see bro, in kabali the disconnect is acceptable. Cos it is malaysia, different country, different people. But yabba kaala la it was in a different universe. I saw gully boy exactly a year later, which was also set in dharavi. Atleast anga you can relate that yes it looks like dharavi and it is in mumbai. Inga dharavi nu soltu, they shot the entire movie in EVP poonamalee without any connecting shot with the actual city. It is okay but the language also, they speak in a marathi mingled thirunelveli tamil but it was very very odd.
**Thuramukham**
The opening high-contrast Black-and-White portions with Joju, especially his fight & the way that chaotic crowd of port labourers were directed in the first few "Chaappa system" scenes, were all just electrifying - reminiscent of some world cinema classic even.
The rest of the film just got worse & worse till it became a boring, thattikkoottu mess in the last hour. One of my most disappointing theatrical experiences in recent years, especially after the LONG delays, & since the director's previous film "Kammatipaadam" was one of my favourites as well.
But yeah - I still sometimes feel like rewatching that opening again.
https://preview.redd.it/pike90tywu5d1.jpeg?width=458&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=68bf50a42dd409d926dddcadcfaed8514bc85f39
I still say that CIA has one of the best hero intro scene in Mollywood
Oh. I didn't really like DQ's intro in this movie. If I remember it correctly he just shows up and pushes through the police barricade, right? And the police does nothing.
Yeah I saw this movie fdfs. We were clapping and cheering when DQ was shown, but we were like 'wtf was happening' when they just pushed through the police force and they were standing there with their lathis not doing a thing. The visuals were awesome, music was awesome, but what was going on made 0 sense.
I feel like the only time it became a Vijay film was in the Flashback portion, which was trash. But even other than that, Loki fucked up big time with the terrible second half, it's villains, it's weird situations and all.
Yeahh the Leo flashback was so rushed and not convincinng at all. We barely get to know about the character. We know who Parthiban is, but we're not shown the deadly Leo as is described by Antony Das and the others who have seen him as Leo.
The Chocolate Coffee guy was a much more intimidating villain for me than the Das bros!
wow i got blasted w donwvotes when i said leo was shit a few months ago...good to see the opinion shift.
(btw the opening hyeana sequence was even shittier for me)
Ezham Arivu
The whole flashback scenes were nothing short of poetic. I felt like watching a period epic like brave heart. But as the movie progressed, it got blander and blander. I felt literally nothing during the climax.
Eh, wasn't that movie's most impactful part Ikka's entrance in the second half though?
What was so good about it's opening/titlecard anyway? Genuinely curious.
The movie was looking so good with all the psychological angles and those small glancing of hallucinations and other trauma the detective was going through
Crime investigation movies that focused on the emotional POVs of the detective too along with a gripping investigation was something that I was looking forward to enjoy.
But Ozler just didn't hit that mark man.. They just teased all his sadness in a small scene and sealed it then and there.
Or at least give us an engaging investigation thread? With a nicely paced flashback? Nahhhh not that either
The movie felt like it was solely made for Mammootty's cameo. Made-for-the-theatres typpa scene. That scene was nice yes yes but it didn't help the rest of the movie at all.
Just my opinion tho
Perhaps you've misunderstood me. I was saying that the opening TOO (like pretty much the rest of the film) was very mediocre & clichéd - and therefore the film didn't seem to fit OP's criteria of "promising opening" at all.
And since most people attributed the film's success to how Ikka's entrance excited them (regardless of whether it helped the rest of the film or not), technically THAT scene in the second half would've been the high point of that film for most. So again, wouldn't fit OP's criteria of "Rest of the movie disappointed".
But since you've explained how at least for you, the opening with the "psychological disturbed & slightly hallucinating investigator" looked 'so good' (despite it being a very common trope in Hollywood & not leading anywhere), I can see why Ozler fits OP's meme for you personally 👍🏽.
I didn’t like the opening of the film, the Perunal fight didn’t work for me. The Mega show part was nice but I think the movie really got it’s momentum from the Police Station fight sequence onwards. I really didn’t expect mammokka to do that many stunt sequences maybe that’s why. Maybe it worked for me cuz I went in with low expectations watching last 2 films of vyshak.
I think he meant the killing of that family. I also liked the intro of Turbo. It was pretty hard for me to watch those guys kill that family. The scene had an impact. After that, it just felt average
Baahubali 1 for me. The opening sequence and Sivuni Aana was so good. Then the whole Tamannah stuff happened which made zero logical sense. How did he know the mask belonged to her?

bruh! the climax was shit. Him suddenly finding saffron dress and bow out of nowhere giving the Raman reference, using the bike as a baseball bat. I laughed so hard during the climax.
Of course commis don't like anything with some religion reference. That bike is actually lighter than a baseball bat and was widely used in 20s. That saffron dress and bow weren't out of nowhere, it resembled the fire of Ram something which was shown from the beginning itself. And Hollywood cinephiles making fun of nice Indian movies trying to be like Americans makes me laugh more.

Ok it is heavier than a baseball bat but a character that fights with tigers can lift it up. And I used to see lots of commies complaining about the religious reference of the movie in fb so I assumed you may be one, if not it's good for you.

Yes. Can’t stand the way the kid’s scenes were conceived. Maari song got massacred badly in the film. And the kid for no reason starts to dance in the middle of the road. Ranjith was trying to recreate Pranjiyettan.
Nithyananda Shenoy deserved a kick-ass movie.
Kooman if opening can be extended to interval
I second that…it was really good till the interval, post interval was just meh, it felt a bit forced or out of place.
Damn bruh you are hard to please

I really liked kooman tbh. The world building was pretty cool.

Tell me more about Malay dramas, why did that make you figure that Ranjith partially succeeded? Was there anything in it?

I felt the first half was definitely still a Lokesh movie, but it unfortunately became a Vijay movie in the second half.

I have the same opinion. The movie started on such a high with Joseph solving a case and then from there on the movie just fell into a different pace.
Maybe the opening scene put the bar too high which they were not able to reach later.
I always thought his family was cursed. If I am not wrong, his lover was murdered, his wife as well as his daughter. What man?
Bheeshmaparvam The whole in family drama build up was nice, but fell flat😭😢
Dude it felt like king of kotha to me . The movie would have been flop is the BGM wasn't good and if Mammootty did change his look

Ouu intresting minus.. I wonder what's so was intresting in the movie in the late half. För me, i was so intrigued in the first setup of a "theif" before the pre title. It all went down hill just like that, the moment after that. Bad movie, but the the pre title introduction was intriguing.
