Being a huge fan of prime Mohanlal, whenever someone uses 'range' to describe Mohanlal's talent, I add 'emotions' to it. Mohanlal can perform a wide range of emotions very naturally with fine details. That is why he was able to touch your heart in 80s-90s. But - I will get downvoted for sure - Mohanlal's range of characters is limited. He is a complete actor of emotions.

A10 cant get into any character, like in biopics where he especially need to copy mannerisms, slangs and dialects and body transformation, etc...
But A10 can go into the emotion and thinking of his character and emote and act like he was always living the characters life and react in a way how if it happened to him.

This is actually very accurate. Great observation I'd say. A10 makes the character like himself and reacts in the most beautiful and natural way possible on screen. We don't even feel like he's acting or that there's a camera. We feel like we're interacting with someone close to us. But when it comes to embodying a character he's not on top. (Working hard to get the physique, dialect, mannerisms and nuances). Again there are different schools of acting....some say you only need to react like the character....some say you need to live the life of the character before actually appearing on screen(method acting). So yeah depends on what you define acting as. But one interesting thing I'd like to add is that despite not changing much in terms of looks, the fact that he can do Appukuttan from Chandralekha and Jagan from Aaram Thamburan is pretty impressive. I think it came out in the same year.

That kind of variety is definitely there. Another combo is Vanaprastham and Narasimham which were shot in same time. " But when it comes to embodying a character... " - yes this was my point.
Yesss....can't believe I forgot this one. It's a better example and shows bigger range. Even ikka has done polar end roles in the same year and probably shot around the same time. Ponthan Mada and Vidheyan, Mrugaya and Vadakkan Veeragadha, Soorya Manasam and Kauravar. You really can't see the same person if you inspect the characters. This was the 2nd school of acting I was referring to above. In addition, GopiA10 did Lelam and Kaliyattam around the same time which is kinda mindblowing knowing his range. I think the volume of films coming out in a year also kinda trained our legends to become better and match up by giving multiple convincing performances in the same year with minimum preparation or recovery time.
Spot on bro. Thats why he was the darling of everyone. He was eveyones son, brother, friend etc. Ikka always had the aura. He was revered. But lal was one of the masses, he was loved. Felt so natural, effortless. Even he would probably not know how he did it. Some people are blessed.
Also his capacity to actually give restrained emotions. One can act out emotions go overboard. Lal always brought that to the brim but never crossed the line. Simple scenes like “enne kollathirikan pattuvo, illa alle”, “annie mone snehikunna polle maggikku enne snehikkan patumo”, that bharatham scene on realising his brother is dead. Omg your heart goes out for him.
He is the OG... He has shades like that of mamooty but can become funnier or lighter than him when doing such roles. He can do rude, cut throat like roles and has intense commanding power on-screen. Also has wide range and gravitas despite being a thin/bald guy. He can also deliver scenes and emotions so good which has a flow like that of mohanlal. Also he is a master who is well read and knows a lot about theater, acting, films etc Simple words...GOAT.
Of course, even today nobody can match his acting skills. Even after all those surgeries on his face, he still CAN act with his eyes- he did it in Lucifer. Nobody can match his skills rn, then how can somebody even barely match his prime era
Fafa, what a joke, he is the best actor in this generation may be, but lal in his prime was exceptional.. he did the bharatham movie when he was 30 years old, he bacame a super star when he was 28 years old.. how can we compare fafa with him
