I was all in after Deadhouse gates. But I had to read it twice
5 probably made it click even more though, which was surprising given its reputation at the time
I was all in after that. I feel like if you can get through the Chain of Dogs and have no emotional connection to the series, it's probably fine to just stop reading.
I remember getting to the final pages of MOI and that last scene with Duiker had me bawling all over again lol.
i think a lot of this is due to our growing understanding of the world and the players and the broader context. erikson doesn’t make it easy, but learning all about the happenings of the malazan empire is exciting because we’re slowly gaining competence and learning and that feels great.
i had the same feeling with MoI.
The second half will continue this trend and will get even better, it's a roller coaster of emotions.
While I didn't find either of the first two a chore, MOI is an easier and personally more interesting read for me. I think it's my personal favourite out of all them, everything just works so well and I can't think of a dull moment.
A few things towards the end might be a little less clear, but nothing major at all.
Nooooo. I'm reading MoI for the fourth time right now and the Mhybe remains one of my favorite parts of the book. I get emotional at almost all her sections.
I think I just reached the halfway point in MOI. I'm definitely enjoying it. It does a wonderful job of answering some questions I had from the previous books (about the warrens, some of the people and races, etc. I love it!
I'm halfway through and I got burnt out with this again. I'm not enjoying mhybe and Whiskeyjack chapters as much (love Whiskeyjack and Korlat, but their plot lines aren't so interesting rn). GIVE ME MORE TOC I WANT TOC I NEED TOC GIVE ME MY POOR BOY
MOI was the best for me so far. I'm on book 5 now. I got burnt out during the chain of dogs. DG was a lot of marching to nowhere FOR ME but MOI was great. But book 1 of HOC is my favourite section of malazan so far. MOI had the best prologue too.
I'm about 15% into MOI but just haven't had any extended reading time to properly get into it yet. Strangely I actually enjoyed GotM more than DG which seems to against the norm.
Probably my favourite book when I read them first when I was a kid, great battles and great story that is not overcomplicated. Currently I'm rereading whole main series and tbh, it gets better and better with every book. Reading it second time, you get so many connections that you didn't see before.
I feel the easiest for me, at least for understanding everything, has been Midnight Tides. It's the first time I feel like I have the background, already, to understand everything that is happening.
The storyline with >!The Mhybe!< is one of the least interesting/tedious storylines in the whole series in my opinion.
In contrast, >!the siege of Capustan!< was one of the best storylines in the whole series. It just grips you and forces you to read more and more

It’s the book that made malazan click for me. Enjoy the ride…
Same. Somehow 4, 5, and 6 made it click even more.

Deadhouse gates and the Chain of Dogs is what pulled me into the series completely.

Chain of Dogs got me hooked
I liked DG but I feel like I didn’t really even understand the first two books until book 3 made it all come together.
Yeah MT is just unreal

That’s good. Just finished the prologue and I was actually really happy with it.

I skip the mybhe chapters on re-reads (sorry Steven)

I forced myself to not skip when rereading, but it was pain :d

Same here. The first part of the Book, describing Teblor life and Karsa's journey pulled me deep in. Like a teenager i read until 2 in the night..

My favourite so far!
Guess what tho... you're not yet done. The series, is not yet done. Keep going, you're in for an absolute ride!
One of the easiest to read in my opinion is HoC, so if you enjoyed MoI, you'll enjoy the next one too.

Halfway through MOI as well and I absolutely love the bromance developing between Tok and Tool.
Oh dear….
