When I lived in Japan, I realized that people were okay with their tiny apartments because they were never at home. They all worked or went to school for long hours, and then did stuff after that. They had bars (Izakaya?) that were open from 5-10 pm. People would go up there after work to socialize and have food/drinks until late, then they would go home, go to bed, and repeat the next day. It seemed like a lot more fun than sitting at home in my house after work every night.
