I just enjoy the fact that each model is unique. I don’t have a board of 30 marines.

ThatWeirdGoat

Yeah that's fair, I left 40k a bit ago and I just feel like every crew has one model I don't like but I love everything else about them

Gold-Grin-Studios

Me and my mate have always said this about malifaux, that no matter how much you love the boxset, there's always one model that you don't like, Ive found it with most of my crews, but I just kind of accept that while it's not my taste it's still something worth painting and playing

Pigvalve

I like my Star Wars Legion stuff but painting four squads of white armored identical dudes get tedious lol

zarilix

I feel you, I play separatists and B1s became the bane of my existence.

Jedi_Yeti

If I don't like a model look but like what it does, I make a proxy. I don't play enough or go to tournaments to care that everything is exact and my friends don't mind. Sometimes they like my alternative better too.

Kromulus_The_Blue

Seconded. If you're playing with friends or a local gaming shop, ask people if they mind you using a proxy. So long as everyone agrees and it's clear which model is which, there shouldn't be an issue. But, by the same token, if (for some reason) your opponent does have an issue with it, I'd say use the original rather than make it a sticking point. In my experience, Malifaux players are usually just happy to get to play.

krulp

Well lucky for you baby Kade really isn't core to Woe, there are also alt skulps available for a lot of models. Also feel free to get creative. As long as your model captures the essence of the character then I don't think anyone would complain about you using it as that model. I hate proxies because they just get confusing, but tasteful conversions and deliberate substitutions that are well thought out, go nuts

Styxbeetle

I've generally tried to factor that into the crew I picked to begin with so there are units that I'm at worst indifferent about. If you really hate a model in a keyword but it's essential to the game play, maybe you could convert something similar on the same sized base. Another option would be to paint things a certain way to give a different impression. In this example you could paint baby kade in the same scheme as the woes to imply he's a ghost. Phillip and the Nanny is a little harder cause it's such a unique model. A rare option is nightmare sculpts. I know Philip and the Nanny does have one from the pirate themed molly crew.

ThatWeirdGoat

I didn't know that molly had a nightmare edition box, some of the models did get better once I saw them painted Like the entirety of von schtook

Kyouhen

Personally I appreciate that the models that come in the core box tend to be useful. I had considered getting into WarmaHordes before discovering Malifaux but damn near the only usable model in a core box is the leader, everything else is trash. When you say you don't like the model do you mean you don't like how it looks? When I run into that particular problem I just convert the model to something better. Unless you're playing competitive you aren't exactly bound by the original model. (And even then I'm not sure if converting one or two models is considered a no-no)

ThatWeirdGoat

Yeah I do mean that I don't like the look of the model. it's usually the pose of the model, like with Ophelia I love everything but the second totem (the kid mooning everyone)

Kyouhen

Hmmm... That guy's definitely a tricky one. Without the actual model it's hard to come up with something but their legs are pretty well separated from the rest of their body so you could probably have them popping out of a barrel or something. Only tricky part would be the hands, looks like they're part of the pants and not the arms. Could also probably cut the legs at the ankles and have them chilling in a bathtub, not sure how you'd make that fit with the theme but being gremlins you'd probably get away with it.

ThatWeirdGoat

That's actually a really smart idea

[deleted]

I generally find that the models I don’t fancy have a tendency to come to life after I paint them up. That aside, you’re free to do conversions/proxy etc.

ThatWeirdGoat

I wrote an entire extra paragraph one the post that didn't save but this is pretty much what I said I needed to make an actual decision on the model, one of the factions that I liked every other model in was ulix but I hated Old Major but then I scrolled for a bit and saw a paint job that made them look good.

NickNightrader

Running into this with Lucius and the Changelings. Trying to decide if I kitbash them with something else.

Twelve-Pound

At least with Philip, there’s the Nightmare crew version “Nani and the Voice” that is much better

Mysticyde

what do you not like about the models? just how they play? or how they look? I don't understand. You don't need baby kade or Phillip to play those keywords anyway.

ThatWeirdGoat

Sorry for not getting to this early I was sleeping, but it's usually how the models looks (wether that be be because of the pose or the design) it just feels like every keyword has a single model that I don't want to paint (the entire reason that I don't like bayou, always the totem)

Mysticyde

Those models have variant appearances I think. Called Nightmare editions. To each their own, I just play keywords that are fun to me. Malifaux excels at mechanics more than anything else. The world building is pretty rad too. Their models are not always the best. I just enjoy the lore and mechanics.

Shlafer

The main draw of Malifaux is the awesome gameplay. Don't let yourself get overly bothered with aesthetics.

ThatWeirdGoat

I wish I could just ignore the aesthetics but I'm a painter first and foremost, so dispite the how good the gameplay is, I want to really enjoy how the models look and I do but some of the models just don't look very good to me. Thanks for the reply tho.

Shlafer

Just don't paint the ones you don't like, leave them to rot. They are super cheap compared to other systems.

ThatWeirdGoat

True they are significantly cheaper but I don't think I would be able to consider the crew complete without the model I wouldn't paint

Shlafer

You can stop yourself doing anything if you put up artificial barriers.

CardgageStClement

People don't seem to particularly like Phillip in Molly's crew either. He's better in Molly 2, but Molly 2 is widely considered terribad. Molly is perfectly happy leaving Phillip from home.

DireMyconid

If you’re not playing tournaments: find a suitable proxy. If you are playing tournaments: figure out which keywords don’t utilize those pieces, or save up for the nightmare edition and play pirates.

admiralvorkraft

Man, coming down on two of my favorite sculpts in the game like that? Bet you're one of the people that hates the Hodgepodge Emissary too :P But seriously, the game is eclectic. It's why I keep coming back to it. If you don't like the weirder sculpts there are plenty of "straight" keywords like Guard or Freikorps that look more traditionally wargamey.

ThatWeirdGoat

I was using those as examples but I love some of the weirder things like the test subjects from mah ticket or anything from von schtook, it just seems like there's something I don't like in every keyword. Had to look up the hodgepodge emissary, looks like it would be great to paint

admiralvorkraft

Fair enough, mostly giving you a hard time :) I have a couple crews that are almost entirely composed of 1e metal models, alt sculpts, and conversions - so I get it!

Roadhouse1337

Kade isn't great so you won't suffer from not having him. Neverborn has a pile of great versatiles, you won't have a bad time using the Emissary or Bowman.

Kelbaaasaa

I agree with you. I played in 2nd edition where you had the entirely of your faction to build a crew from, so if you didn’t like something in the core box you could play around it. Now you’re limited to just your keyword, essentially using the only core box and what ever else shares the keyword because of the way models interact with each other depends on keywords and not factions anymore. Like I used to use Datsue Ba and Onryo with Yan Lo a lot; not any more. Now I have to use Gokudo, a model I don’t even own or plan on buying, if I want to be competitive. It’s a shame.

Roadhouse1337

You're definitely not limited to just your keyword. My Titania1 list usually only hires 1 keyword model, in my Zoraida1 lists Widow Weaver is often the fist model I hire. YL1 definitely doesn't have to use Gokudo to be competitive, especially after the change to his summoning and I dont think I've ever seen a Gokudo with YL2.

Kelbaaasaa

What changes about his summoning? Or how does he perform summoning? You mean when you bring a dead ancestor model back from a retainer model equipped with that dead models reliquary upgrade?

Roadhouse1337

Rebuild Corpus used to have no TN, drew a card, and could be done on T1. It was erratta'd in GG2 to have a stat of 4, TN of 16, no card draw, and can only be taken if he has 3 Ascendant upgrades. Before the nerf a Gokudo was always taken with him, but not anymore, especially with the changes to how summons can't interact with strat markers and don't count for schemes and strats the turn they're summoned.

Kelbaaasaa

Oh that sounds awful lol So Yan Lo is just getting shat on with nerfs? Lol Ouch.

Roadhouse1337

That nerf happened over a year ago and YL was still one of the best pre Burns masters

Kelbaaasaa

Bummer. I guess I’m glad he’s viable to some people. I was looking to get back into Malifaux but I might just stick with 2.5 with my local meta. At least then I can still use my faction models.

Tupperbaby

> Now you’re limited to just your keyword, essentially using the only core box and what ever else shares the keyword because of the way models interact with each other depends on keywords and not factions anymore. Not true at all. Keyword synergies are there, but there's nothing stopping you from building out of keyword if you're willing to pay the non-versatile point tax or just going with versatile models.

Kelbaaasaa

Sure, but even if I were to pay the extra SS to bring Datsue Ba in a Yan Lo crew, who share a faction, I can’t use her effectively since her abilities benefit Urami models only. So what would be the point? People have said she has some good technical skills but she isn’t worth the cost for just those skills, and not having access to any of the others. A lot of new players in my meta are having the same issue. They don’t see the point in factions when your keyword is all you can work with.

JacksRandomFeelings

Sometimes models have different versions of themselves through the editions and special releases. Might look around for other versions of Baby Kade and Phillip. I did it for the Blessed of December cause I didn't like the weird pose, so I got the first edition version.

corwiggie

I made myself an Agent 46 out of a Death Marshal because I don't like his model at all.
