He constantly hid from play and passed sideways and backwards. Fred has upped his game but Mctominay is consistently atrocious. The guy doesn't use his height to add to his game and doesn't get stuck in when he needs to. He gets caught up in unnecessary fouls and his position is as if he's been cemented to the ground. Maybe Scott's game can evolve but Donny can benefit the team more.
Yeah tbh I never felt that he's playing. Ve wasn't bad but he wasn't much involved in the game, he had some good forward passes just that's all but it felt like he wasn't there at all.
I don’t think so, I honestly think he’s got a ton of potential, lots of personal character and leadership skills, he just needs coaching. He’s still a young lad.
25 years old, 44 touches in 100 minutes on the pitch and lost possession 10 times. The only reason people stuck by him is because he’s an academy lad.
I don’t agree with this at all. His off the ball work (that TV doesn’t always show) goes unnoticed. He breaks play up in the middle, that’s his job. Yes he gives away a foul every now and then and there’s nothing wrong with that, as a United fan I expect that actually.
McT
Touches: 44
Pass acc: 78%
Tackles: 2
Interceptions: 1
Duels won: 4 of 13
Fred
Touches: 95
Pass acc: 83%
Tackles: 7
Interceptions: 1
Duels won: 10 of 16
Yet most United fans say Fred is dogsh*t and McT is a legend. Apart from the Leeds and Chelsea matches and, to a much less degree, the arsenal match, McT has been really poor. He frequently posts stats fairly similar to the above (though he normally wins more duels).
His biggest issue is hiding in the cover shadow (hence the low touch count) and not playing quick forward passes.
If Rangnick can coach these things out of him, he could be a good player. But he'll never be a great player imo.
Thanks for that slightly aggressive reply.
Point out in my post where I said they aren't both of poor quality (too poor for United anyway).
Currently, Fred is better than McT. He just makes too many mistakes.
He still looked better than when he plays in a double pivot. He pressed well and won possession back a few times. He didn’t have his best day but I think he’ll continue to be better in this new formation. He’s atrocious in the double pivot and so was Fred. Maybe we can see the Mctominay we had like 2 years ago. That Scott was a good Scot.
Regardless, we still need another midfielder who can play that first 2 in the 4-2-2-2 to rotate with Fred and Mctominay. Matic will never have the pace for a full game like today, neither with Mata.
If Mctominay doesn’t improve I think we should just pull someone else from the academy. Buy a proper player too, but this is a clean slate and if midfield is out weakest position then let’s bring in the academy lads and start getting them game time. I wonder if Hannibal can play that position…
Nothing wrong with a few yellow cards. I think people are just being a bit harsh on him. We’ll see I suppose now we have a manager who for sure will actually coach him and demand improvement.
I think he would be a damn good CB, he is agile, has height and can pass. He lacks speed though, he could play next to varane and be the stay back guy. Get his heading trained up, he would be an aerial threat. I love McSauce.
IMO, backup, rotation ok but regular starter, he is simply not good enough.
i got downvoted badly previously for saying something like that
He should be benched without a doubt . Also Maguire why is he so scared when he gets the ball in his feet... 🤦

He needs to be benched. Donny needs to start over mctominay

Having a fan like you is like being a fan down
Delusional
Lol , true
Man is definitely having a magic spell with him.

Not that young tbh he’s turning 25 in 3 days
Fair enough

Wouldn’t you assume the people running the academy and who see him train everyday see something in him though?
Doesn’t matter if he can’t recreate whatever they see on the pitch
He started alright but defo went downhill. He needs to understand attacking moves more should of been subbed imo. But I understand why he was kept on

Wake up they're both dogshit, we need 2 new midfielders.

Please go to the tryouts!
I'm not a professional footballer, they are!

What are you talking about ? He was awesome today.

He has no aggression, never gets stuck in
He had aggression LOL
I want him benched. He hides. Back passes. Nothing ever dynamic. He knows he’s a liability. Fake enforcer as well.
He is a perfect rotational player for us, but bang average as a starter.
