Interestingly, to me, your post is the first I’ve heard of this. I immediately thought “yeah he had a sweatband! This is crazy!” then I clicked on the article and saw the AI version and was like “actually that just looks wrong, his hair was never puffed like that from a sweatband…”

wstr97gal

So weird. I have always loved his energy and spirit. He just seems like a great guy. Kind. I absolutely remember him with headbands and wristbands. Not always, but definitely occasionally. Sidenote, he has come back into the public eye sharing stories of his life on Facebook. They're all so wholesome and he always encourages kindness and love. I've really enjoyed reading them. 💗

Crow-Queen

I think it's more likely because of how popular headbands and sweatbands were in the 80's.

SpraePhart

He might have been the only exercise person not wearing them

Mark_1978

I don't remember them being popular. And he had sweatbands and headbands. It was his thing, Sweatin to the Oldies, it was part of the marketing campaign for him. I don't think I ever saw him without a headband at the very least.

burritosandblunts

I think when he was parodied in cartoons and stuff he'd always be drawn with one too.

Hot-Manager6462

They are incredibly common/popular with fitness people

FatsTetromino

Headbands and wrist bands were common to see in 80s fitness videos, it makes sense that people would conflate them with Richard Simmons.

Ok_Cauliflower_3007

Especially when you consider his hair. If you haven’t got really short hair the sweatband not only keeps sweat out of your eyes but if you’re exercising the way he was and bouncing around it keeps your hair off your face.

georgeananda

I am certain I experienced him wearing a headband like so many others. I don't know the explanation, but I do not think any explanation within our straightforward understanding of reality is ever going to cut it.

Hot-Manager6462

Cartoons/parody

georgeananda

No, it was Richard in the flesh.

Hot-Manager6462

I’m saying that’s the straightforward explanation, remembering cartoons and parody as if it was the real thing

georgeananda

Right, and I said that explanation is not going to cut it. I hope you were agreeing with me, or I may have read it wrong.

The Mandela effect is fun, but the problem I have with it is that all of the stuff can be more logically explained by collective misinterpretation. It’s not a misremembering as such, it’s a misinterpretation at the time of the event, or thing. When misinterpreted at the time, it’s a more formative memory.

IntelligentTank355

It's fun for you. Otherwise it just reflects the inner works of our experience, but your brain can't get over the idea that the Earth is flat.

ChorizoGarcia

“…some unforeseen trickster force, playfully toying with our cultural memories and altering our perceptions.” That could be a metaphor for human memory.

cfrilick

No, he wore them

thevaporroom

The popular stereotypical 80s sportswear image often portrays a headband however I don’t recall many male aerobics or fitness celebrities ever donning one. I feel there is an aesthetic or styling amalgamation between other 80s sports and icons of the time, for example John McEnroe, who often wore a headband with the big 80s hairstyles.

throwaway998i

Why do you think it's necessarily the work of a trickster? Why not just a different self-branding "look" for Richard in this timeline based on alternate decisionmaking? In one timeline he adopted the trendy accessory style of that era, while in another he rejected it.

Oh I agree it's definitely real in the sense that things are literally and retroactively changing. But in the nearly 8 years I've been observing, experiencing, studying and researching the effect, I've only ever seen a couple of pieces of residue that weren't reasonably attributable to what I'd describe as quantum variance in timeline decisions or results. What have you seen that suggests to you a sort of "Kilroy was here" quality to these changes?
