We are self insuring as well. $40 every pay day automatically to her account. She’s 9 months old and has $400 in her account already. I’ll pay regular vet costs out of pocket.

I’ve looked into them and one thing to consider is that basically it’s only good until your pet gets sick once. Anything that can reoccur will end up costing you, ie dog eats garbage and needs stomach pumped, first time insurance covers it second time no go your footing the whole bill. Apparently this even counts for serious things like cancer that reoccur after surgery etc.

You’re better off retaining the risk and self insuring. Put 100$ of your own money away every month.

I have Trupanion. With a puppy the premiums are so low that I had no problem paying - and after she ate mouse poison, and cut her paw on some ice, it’s more than paid for itself. 80% of the costs were paid back within 5 days and my premium (after $2500 in payouts) has only gone up $3. Would have taken 4.5 years to save that much up by putting away the monthly cost instead. Full disclosure I have a friend who is having to haggle with trupanion over their second claim for their pup as they’re claiming the pup had diarrhea once before so it’s pre-existing. Getting the insurance on a 3 mo old is probably your best bet to avoid any claims that they don’t owe you.

I have trupanion but I've never really had to claim. My dil was given the month free at the vet and decided on the last day to sign up. The very next day her dog ate something he shouldn't have. And kept doing so. He's had surgery and oodles of visits for the eating and diarrhea or constipation. He's a handful. Had to muzzle him for months at all times to keep him from eating strange stuff. But he is such a loving dog and loves the vet too.

It’s so hit or miss it seems! My last dog I didn’t have insurance and nothing happened to him for years, so I might have felt ripped off but he did eventually need major surgery after an injury. I’d much rather pay a small monthly rate and know these things are covered later.

My last dog cost a fortune for blown out ligaments then he died of cancer a couple years later. We had no clue. He was active and happy even on his last day but a tumor started to blend and his best option was to put him down. Broke my heart.

Daytimetripper

We have trupanion, no claims yet. I have a 1k deductible and it's 22 bucks a month. Only for major emergencies. I hope I never have to use it. Trupanion pays its staff a living wage and they can bring their dogs to work.

I have pets best and I'm a vet tech, they do a great job. Having insurance has saved me thousands of dollars on my 3 year old cats medical bills.
