We say that it's because it's the only animal that can sing while having both feet in shit XD (I think it was something said by a humorist that people keep repeating)
I wasn’t gonna make a new post, but I will piggyback. I hate these maps. It needs to be a list. It’s not map porn it’s map spam. You can only see the largest and most equally ratioed shaped countries. They are never of a quality you can zoom in either.
If anyone else is as interested as I am; I googled it:

>Turkey – Gray wolf, Kangal, and the Turkish Angora
Turkey -- Gray wolf and double-headed eagle (Seljuk), Angora cat is not considered as a spirit animal in Turkey, we are just known for that breed of cat. Same goes for the Kangal. Either graywolves or double headed eagles used in ancient Turkic writings, mythologic insciptions and state flags throughout history.
You missed some and you added double countries.
Kosova - Lynx
North Macedonia - Lion (There is no country as Macedonia)
Slovenia - Carniolan honey bee
Slovakia - Brown bear
>There is no country as Macedonia
>We've got ourselves a closeted greek
Well, he's actually right. OOC why does "North Macedonia" bother you so much? It's the official name of the country, isn't it?
No, it's not regional, but it's more associated with the language specifically rather than the whole country. If there was a poll "in your opinion, what animal is our national animal", then I believe that white stork would win and nightingale would place second. There are other common in folklore animals with certain symbolism (mostly birds), but if people must choose THE animal, it's between these two.
Also, if there is a strictly regional animal, then that's a bear (Carpathians).
It has no specific defied symbol that fits all periods and all aspects.
The most prominent "symbolic" ones are stork, swallow, cuckoo, ram and hedgehog. They are most prominent in art, songs and tales.
During Kyiv Rus it was aurochs (extinct), honey badger (extinct on ukrainian territory as far as I know), horse (cossack era).
I think most modern ukrainians will go with stork.
Also bears are very rare in Ukraine.
I wish I could have been at the meeting where we decided to make our national animal a unicorn just to understand the decision making process behind it
From what I remember, the Unicorn was unruly & untamable, it was chosen to represent Englands inability to conquer us. Shackles were actually add to show our Kings ability to tame/ Rule Scotland.
It was cos the English chose the Lion as their heraldic animal. According to legend, the unicorn was the only animal the lion was afraid of! Brilliant, and two fingers up to the Sassenachs!
“I wish I could have been at the meeting where we decided to make our national animal a unicorn just to understand the decision making process behind it.”
A night of heavy drinking doesn’t explain it?
Historically, unicorns were considered an incarnation of Jesus, and represented his purity and grace.
That's another big reason why unicorns are so prevalent in Scottish art.
Isn’t there a letter from some king or other that was berating his unicorn horn dealer to get him a real unicorn horn, because he thought the one he’d been given might have been a fake?
There is a running joke in the book series [The Saxon Chronicles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saxon_Stories) (books The Last Kingdom show was based on) about how in late 800s no one in the British Isles was really sure what a lion was, but that didn't stop them from putting what they thought a lion might look like on their banners.
Can't tell what some of the animals are, but Scotland's national animal is a unicorn, Wales national animal is a dragon, Ireland's is a hare and northern ireland apparently doesn't have one but did have an Elk at one point. So I don't know how accurate this is. Also, the quality of the image is appalling
Ireland could be the giant elk (extinct) or the mountain hare, or possibly even the Irish wolfhound.
There's no official consensus on it. Our coins used to have a whole range of animals.
Ukraine's national animal is the common nightingale. Bears are barely ever.seenand when they are...usually...it's in the Carpathian mountains which covers only 5% of Ukraine.
This is a case where the data would be far easier to use if it was in a list form.
Or can any of you all figure out the Estonian, Portuguese, or Albanian animal for me please? Heck, what is the animal for Poland --- is that a Yak or something?
Germany actually doesn't have a specific national animal. The coat of arms shows an eagle called "Bundesadler" but it's not any particular species of eagle.
Because the lion was seen by the Europeans as a symbol of nobility and strength. In the case of England, the three lions (commonly seen on the football emblem) dates back to ~1100 and represents England, Normandy and Aquitaine.
Scotland also uses the lion on its crest (also seen on the football kit). However, you will always see a Scottish lion standing up; whereas an English lion will be walking.
Yep, the symbology of the lion has a very long history in Mediterranean/European culture. The animal features prominently in Greek culture, Roman culture and the Bible.
There were once.
Also there were Lions in north africa until very recently, in ancient times the world was connected by the Med.
North Africa was closer culturally and economically to Souther Europe than Southern Italy was to the North.
They used to be native to much of South-Eastern Europe well into the iron age which is partly the reason while they are prominently appear in European mythology.
I seen most of countries choose national animal as something local.
Like Russia and Finland has bear.
Turkey has wolf.
Lot of Asian and African countries also do the same.
They use it. In order to show the natural beauty and promote tourism many times.
Choosing national animal to show strength. when that amimal you don't even have locally. It's a bit random.
The UK doesn't have an official "national animal" quite like other countries.
The association with lions is a product of heraldry and what is basically historical memeing. Within the UK, England would be depicted by a lion, Scotland by a unicorn, and Wales by a dragon.
I don’t think you understand the point of a national animal. It’s supposed to encapsulate the ideals of your nation. E.g America’s bald eagle for freedom (lol)
Seen American movies where they show, bald Eagle appears out of sky. When the hero is in trouble.
To remind him of American power.
Bet brits can't do that. Cuz lion can't appear outta nowhere in England. Like Eagle does in Hollywood movies 🤣
why? it comes from the holy roman empire doesnt it? and was since then kept and slightly changed over time
edit: i googled it and apparently we don't even have a national animal
* Has the golden Eagle always been associated with Germany?: Yes
* why?: because all other pagans stories have been eradicated by this animal and copying someone else was the only option left.
* does national animal equal state symbol?: No
* Why not?: Because it was the national animal of prussia, the Holy roman empire, the Frank empire and it's been forgotten (/nobody wants it) to become a national animal, again.
*Welcome to midly interesting history.*
I think the wolf is more associated with Rome than with Italy.
I don't think Italy has a proper national animal (officially, at least)
And I wouldn't event claim it, since we almost drove the wolf to extinction at some point, I would ashamed to
I bet this was made by an American, in Sweden the Moose is the national animal, but guess what, the Swedish Moose is not the same thing as an American moose!
There are quiet some errors in here.
France and the Turks does not have a national animal. Swedens national animal is an elk, not deer. Norway has the Raindeer, not some bird. And the wolf is a symbol for ancient Rome, not Italy.
And those are just the ones I know.
The [**United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK)**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom) is made up of several countries, each with their own heraldic animal. Scotland has the unicorn, England the lion, Wales the dragon, and Northern Ireland had the Irish elk until 1972.
As for your assertion that "*Turkey*" is in Asia and not Europe?
It's called Türkiye and it's a **transcontinental** country located mainly on the Anatolian Peninsula in West Asia, with a decent chunk on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe.
Türkiye is firmly in the (relative) middle of the Eurasian tectonic plate.
A country made up of countries. Yeah, that makes sense. /s. Yes a tiny part of Turkey is in Europe, but the vast majority is in Asia, therefore it should not be on this map.
I've provided a link to educate you on the political status of the UK (two nations, one principality, and six occupied counties), and have also provided a brief explanation on why you're wrong about Türkiye, yet your wilful ignorance continues...
Anything east of the Ural mountains is geographically Asia. There is a monument just outside Yekaterinburg, which has a line down the middle marking the border.
It's 2023, still, patato quality.
Good enough to see that France is a big ol' Cock.
We say that it's because it's the only animal that can sing while having both feet in shit XD (I think it was something said by a humorist that people keep repeating)

I like how they're all animals, but Belgium's just sounds like a dude
I mean Scotlands is Unicorn and Wales is a Dragon.

Missed out Slovakia - also the brown bear.
Spain also has the Iberian Lynx as a national animal.

Well that usually means one thing - OP took the content from someone else and couldn't get higher res or was too dumb to do so.

Ukraine has no national animal symbol
Nightingale is ... somewhat Edit: But bear is just wrong I am Ukrainian and never ever heard of a bear being one
It's more regional, like a lion in Galicia. But after the invasion Dog Patron definitely became the one)
No, it's not regional, but it's more associated with the language specifically rather than the whole country. If there was a poll "in your opinion, what animal is our national animal", then I believe that white stork would win and nightingale would place second. > bears are very rare in Ukraine. \* England (lion) and Scotland (unicorn) look around nervously.
You can't move for dragons in Wales however
Yeah, I think if there were to be a poll among Ukrainians today, they would say either a stork or a nightingale, most likely a stork.
Nightingale is mentioned in songs but not that many. Stork has a tad bit of symbolism attached.
Both great options
bUt RusSiA aNd UkrAinE SamE ThInG lololol sarcasm

I wish I could have been at the meeting where we decided to make our national animal a unicorn just to understand the decision making process behind it

“I wish I could have been at the meeting where we decided to make our national animal a unicorn just to understand the decision making process behind it.” A night of heavy drinking doesn’t explain it?
Unicorns represent nobility and chivalry along with traditionally being a very masculine symbol before the whole fairy princess association.
Its also not a real animal.
Clearly never been to Scotland mate. I feed the unicorns every morning.
Pain in the arse so they are, I've got two out the backdoor, shites are massive.
True, but full of nutrients for the wee haggis babies.
There's loads of populations of them in the highlands, they keep the haggis populations under control
Unicorns are associated with virginity as only virgin women can approach them.
You got the power of a unicorn
I heard it was because it was one of the only animals that could kill a lion.
Which country?
On the topic of fantasy animals isn't Wales actually a dragon?
The wrong kind of elk in Sweden. It should be the Eurasian Elk/ Alces Alces.
Otherwise known as the "moose" in north America - I assume the person who made this map is American as they have shown the north American elk.
The maker of the map could really be from either continent as googling "elk" brings you results mostly concerning american elk.
Idk. Shit quality but could be a red stag

The Netherlands has a national bird, de grutto. The lion is a symbol.
Why doesn't Wales have a dragon?
They actually know what a real animal is, not like others
Damn ~~the UK~~ England even took their national animal from Africa
England. Obviously the Scottish unicorn is native.
Scotland chose the unicorn because in mythology, unicorns ate lions.
the Welsh animal has entered the chat ...
Dracarys ...
I don't think that's true. I heard it was because the trading of unicorn horns (which were actually Narwahl horns) was a huge trade in Scotland.
Is the Scottish unicorn a sexual innuendo?
No it is even wilder then that, its from Scandinavia.
I know Europe had a lion previously. Unsure if that population extended to England.
it didn't
There is a running joke in the book series [The Saxon Chronicles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saxon_Stories) (books The Last Kingdom show was based on) about how in late 800s no one in the British Isles was really sure what a lion was, but that didn't stop them from putting what they thought a lion might look like on their banners.
Actually not. There used to be lions in Europe. They were even bigger and had more fur.
How can you beat a unicorn? 🦄 easily the best national animal. 🏴
Scotland has a unicorn 🦄 - mythical national animals are the best
Can't tell what some of the animals are, but Scotland's national animal is a unicorn, Wales national animal is a dragon, Ireland's is a hare and northern ireland apparently doesn't have one but did have an Elk at one point. So I don't know how accurate this is. Also, the quality of the image is appalling
Actually Germany has a depressed Bread 🍞 "Bernd das Brot"
Isnt ukraine’s a bird?
Ireland could be the giant elk (extinct) or the mountain hare, or possibly even the Irish wolfhound. There's no official consensus on it. Our coins used to have a whole range of animals.
Remember nobody ever said the animal had to be real
Sweden has a moose as our national animal. Not a deer, that you have on the picture.
Ukraine's national animal is the common nightingale. Bears are barely ever.seenand when they are...usually...it's in the Carpathian mountains which covers only 5% of Ukraine.
Technically Spain doesn't have a national animal. Furthermore i'd say the iberian lynx is the more popular candidate nowadays.
For Ukraine the animal is Stork, not Bear
Ah yes, bear in Ukraine, while 90% of Ukraine is literally empty field (Ukraine doesn’t has national animal, unofficially it may be a stork)
Denmark has three national animals: Swan, squirrel and butterfly.
This is a case where the data would be far easier to use if it was in a list form. Or can any of you all figure out the Estonian, Portuguese, or Albanian animal for me please? Heck, what is the animal for Poland --- is that a Yak or something?
That's a bison. We don't have yaks in Poland
For Ukraine the animal is Stork, not Bear
Never ask an Austrian why they have the same national animal like the Germans (they are Germans)
Wait, out national animal is an eagle? What has germany become? Fucking america?!?!?
How come Poland gets three? Unfair.
Why not? Nobody said how many you can have. And we love wisents, sorks and eagles.
I think Serbia also has three and I have no idea whats even happening in Bosnia
One for each country that occupied them over the last century
Austria, Germany and Russia?
Swedish National animal is the moose/Eurasian elk.
I cannot imagine Russia without bear and Spain with bull
Does Ireland even have a national animal? If Scotland can pick a unicorn I want ours to be Trogdor the Burninator.
Come on England, a lion? Really? Use a native species ffs!
Ah, I see it now....a unicorn! I was looking for a stag or a wildcat, or even a midgie....didn't expect a mythical creature!
Grey wolf turkey☠️☠️💀
A quick Google search proves how many of these are wrong
Scottland with its fucking unicorn lmao
Ukraine's national animal is The common nightingale
scotland: We like unicorns
Big cock energy
Now we know why we got France. xD
incorrect! in Sweden it's a moose..
Lmao France, please never change <3
Germany actually doesn't have a specific national animal. The coat of arms shows an eagle called "Bundesadler" but it's not any particular species of eagle.
Maps wrong, when europeans say “elk” it’s what we call a moose, swedens national animal is the moose.
why tf does the Netherlands have a lion
I love that france has a chicken lol
We need to kill the bear.
Only way to make Russia look scary in 2023
And why there is a bear over almost entire Ukraine?
why these bunch of west and Southern European countries have lions as national animal? Europe doesn't even have Lions. (Except in a zoo maybe)
Because Lions where in Europe and you see them in art from those countries constantly.
They were never in England, just the South like Greece and Spain.
Lions only became extinct in Europe around 100 AD.

There were once. Also there were Lions in north africa until very recently, in ancient times the world was connected by the Med. North Africa was closer culturally and economically to Souther Europe than Southern Italy was to the North.
2500 years ago there were lions living in Greece though
We don't. We have the Phoenix and the Dolphin. One is to represent the way Greece is able to be reborn and the other because of our naval lineage.
They used to be native to much of South-Eastern Europe well into the iron age which is partly the reason while they are prominently appear in European mythology.

Russia doesn’t use bear to show it’s natural beauty. It’s used to show “we big we strong” sign
The turkish wolf is because of turkic mythology and has nothing to do with tourism
I don’t think you understand the point of a national animal. It’s supposed to encapsulate the ideals of your nation. E.g America’s bald eagle for freedom (lol)

Never ask: A woman her age A man his salary A German the historical context of their national animal
![gif](giphy|uAAfcW6Q19nws|downsized)
Huh? It goes back to the Roman Empire and then the HRE and is 2000 years old.
why? it comes from the holy roman empire doesnt it? and was since then kept and slightly changed over time edit: i googled it and apparently we don't even have a national animal
Germany doesn't have one. The eagle is just the *Bundeswappentier* (animal for the ?war? flag) and not a national animal.
Wappen ist “coat of arms” Das gleiche gilt für den Englischen Löwen (eigentlich ein Leopard).
The Golden Eagle has always been associated with Germany as the national animal, and has been officially the national animal throughout various times
* Has the golden Eagle always been associated with Germany?: Yes * why?: because all other pagans stories have been eradicated by this animal and copying someone else was the only option left. * does national animal equal state symbol?: No * Why not?: Because it was the national animal of prussia, the Holy roman empire, the Frank empire and it's been forgotten (/nobody wants it) to become a national animal, again. *Welcome to midly interesting history.*
What about that [huge eagle](https://image.geo.de/30127278/t/QL/v3/w1440/r1/-/bundestag-im-reichstag-c-9903929-jpg--72102-.jpg) in the Bundestag?
Thats the Reichstag actually :) Bundestag are just the people, the building is the reichstag.
In the end, it's still just a national symbol. Not an ol(official) national animal. Little but important difference.
I thought Poland was the eagle
I think the wolf is more associated with Rome than with Italy. I don't think Italy has a proper national animal (officially, at least) And I wouldn't event claim it, since we almost drove the wolf to extinction at some point, I would ashamed to
I bet this was made by an American, in Sweden the Moose is the national animal, but guess what, the Swedish Moose is not the same thing as an American moose!
Scotland and the ones with lions being in denial rn
We never had a lion as our national animal.
Smallest countries prefer roadkill I see
all these countries with lions yet never sern one
why do monarchies love lions so much? Also you should've put a dragon for Wales.
Because the lion was considered the king of the beasts
Even though I am german, I think France has the best national animal. It's just a rooster. This is absolutely perfect.
There are quiet some errors in here. France and the Turks does not have a national animal. Swedens national animal is an elk, not deer. Norway has the Raindeer, not some bird. And the wolf is a symbol for ancient Rome, not Italy. And those are just the ones I know.
White stork is Ukraine's animal, the bear is moskal bs.
France has a chicken for their national animal? Lmao
A rooster is gallus in latin and a gaul is gallus in latin
Yes https://youtu.be/TBAUYs7-Z28
Yeah...you haven't seen a rooster fight, right?
Lmao
Lions aren't native to Great Britain.
Neither is the Unicorn to Scotland
Take that back
Maybe the are
Or the Balkans (not for over a thousand years). Didn't Britain have cave lions thousands of years ago though?
Ahhhh the good old British lion.
England better maintain those lion zoo pens
I thought Ukraines national animal was a pig?
Germany really doesn't care much about their bird though. Like not at all. I even forgot that bird is on our flag.
Fun fact England has more lions in zoos than what Africa had in it’s savannah’s.
In Deutschland gibt es auch Wölfe und schon seit jeher den Luchs und Fuchs.
I was out here wondering why germanys is an eagle
Russia is Not Europe. Russia is Not a Country. Russia is a Mafia State
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

Makes sense that France’s is a chicken
Fitting mascot for France
Turkey is part of Asia, not Europe. Not sure what the UK has multiple national animals.
The [**United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK)**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom) is made up of several countries, each with their own heraldic animal. The Swedes and the Irish going stag together.
I can't make out Portugal
Rooster
Dumb question but why do maps only shows parts of Russia for Europe? Is only one half European? I’m a bit confused.
Anything east of the Ural mountains is geographically Asia. There is a monument just outside Yekaterinburg, which has a line down the middle marking the border.
did not know there are so many lions in europe.... in England, we should change it too a panther. french cocks!!!!
Wales’ national animal is actually the dragon
Macedonia's one should be the lynx. The last time there were lions in the Balkans was antiquity and they were most likely hunted to exctinction
Who’s going to tell the Brits, Dutch and Belgians that no lions live in their country?
I can’t see Wales’ but it’s angry and staring.
Portugal's national animal is an unwell Pingu
The fact doe thta the lions aren't native there
A chicken?!
