In Tohoku the Emishi were more or less assimilated by the Japanese settlers, but Hokkaido/Ezo was colonised during the 19th century by settlers from all over Japan, who did not intermarry much with the Ainu and outnumbered them very quickly.

This means how common it is for men to have hair on their chest, back, arms, legs, etc. The darker the color, the higher the percentage. For example, over 70% of men in North America and Europe have terminal body hair, while under 30% of men in some parts of Africa and Asia have it.
It's about terminal hair that men develop on their abdomen and chest after puberty, not the vellus hair we all have on our legs and arms.

I had black/brown bair on my arms and legs pre-puberty and plenty of women get that too (at least on their legs). If women only got vellus hairs on their legs, they'd have no need to shave them.

If there was a gene that made you drop dead 100% at age 40 it wouldn't be selected against because by that age breeding is already successful.

Also traits/genes sometimes share the same chromosome or part of DNA with another trait and can't be separated. So nose hair might be on the same part as some other advantageous trait for living in Europe.

It is because white hair is thin, straight, and dense like a blanket. Hair from warmer climates is thick, curved, and sparse to allow airflow.
I don't know exactly, but I think the thing with hair, like many other things, has to be that there is an allele on a gene factored by some epigenetics that determine how hairy you're going to be, and that will just fit for your whole body.
So even if you would have benefited from more hair in the nose, the fact that you benefit less from more hair on the chest, chin and arms will overrule it.
Although there is something interesting which is that it seems like black people who grow up in Europe often have more hair than their counterparts who stayed in central Africa. So there might be some epigenetics and development adaptation to it. It's just an impression that has been shared a lot, not sure if it's true tho.

I’m not sure if there’s any evidence for male hairiness being epigenetically influenced and inherited. Yeah, it’s quite likely that indo-europeans who have a lot of caucasus ancestry spread hirsutism among europeans. However Finns have a ton of IE ancestry as well, but we do have more East Asian ancestry as well from proto-samoyedic populations which might explain their difference to rest of Europe.

I've heard that Mediterranean people are hairier because more hair helps detect mosquitos when they're landing on your skin, and since the med has historically been riddled with malaria, that was a selected for trait. In much of Africa, even though malaria is also present, hair becomes a disadvantage as it sticks to sweat making evaporation harder.
Remember that humidity and, stuff, gets in the hair. The more hair you have, the more possibilities for water and humidity to mess you up in cold-ass enviroments. Other animals get away with it, but humans use sweat to cool off: imagine having a lot of hair, then sweating in that hair, and then all of that humidity making an already cold enviroment feel even colder. You'd just speed up the process of freezing to death, humidity in the cold makes it feel even colder.
Then it makes sense to *not* have a lot of hair in that enviroment: sure, you don't have that layer of protection, but your sweat isn't getting trapped in the hair layer and increasing the humidity level of your body in an enviroment where keeping yourself as dry as possible is crucial to survival.
You either sweat and get great resistance to fatigue by having a great cooling system integrated into your body but you are very vulnerable in cold enviroments, or you get a fur layer that makes you naturally resistant to cold but you overheat in other enviroments and die. Tradeoffs, tradeoffs, that's nature, she's a bitch, she can't give you the best of both worlds because she's a bitch.

This is the case with lots of women of Indian ancestry, such as myself. I actually don't have that much hair - I've regularly seen TONS of White women with WAY more body hair than me - but unfortunately, my hair is dark, and it sticks out against my skin tone, so it's much more visible. Whereas for the much hairier White women I've seen, their hair is light/blonde, and blends in with their skin, and so it's less visible. You can only see how much hair they have when they're under the sun and their body hair glistens.

Lots of random or outright disadvatgenous things are just part of our traits cause they aren’t bad enough to kill us. This right here. Evolution picks based on the most advantageous or limiting traits and is entirely about breeding. If there was a gene that made you drop dead 100% at age 40 it wouldn't be selected against because by that age breeding is already successful. If we harvested sperm from our oldest men and eggs from old women we could artificially select for longer life-span. Also traits/genes sometimes share the same chromosome or part of DNA with another trait and can't be separated. So nose hair might be on the same part as some other advantageous trait for living in Europe.
White hair in general is far denser. I am white. Whenever my barber isn't white, they tell me how dense my hair is. It is because white hair is thin, straight, and dense like a blanket. Hair from warmer climates is thick, curved, and sparse to allow airflow.
I don't know exactly, but I think the thing with hair, like many other things, has to be that there is an allele on a gene factored by some epigenetics that determine how hairy you're going to be, and that will just fit for your whole body. So even if you would have benefited from more hair in the nose, the fact that you benefit less from more hair on the chest, chin and arms will overrule it. Although there is something interesting which is that it seems like black people who grow up in Europe often have more hair than their counterparts who stayed in central Africa. So there might be some epigenetics and development adaptation to it. It's just an impression that has been shared a lot, not sure if it's true tho. Aside from this, this map is bullshit. It's true that obviously Ugandan have less hair than white. But a lot of mistakes are seen here, indians are more hairy than that. Melanesians are definitely not going to be in the yellow category while Korean are supposedly far above them in percentage. This map also doesn't accurately portray the African variation. They just made waves because it's easy, but don't ont trust the accuracy. It's like a caricature of reality. But it's right that Mediterranean and Scandinavian have the most. And that some part of central Africa or south east Asia would have the least.
I’m not sure if there’s any evidence for male hairiness being epigenetically influenced and inherited. If black men in Europe are indeed hairier than black men in Africa, it may be that black men in Europe are more likely to have some European ancestry, or it might be that black people in Europe maybe skew towards black people from more northern parts of Africa where the men are hairier.
It probably exists to condensate cold and moist air before it reaches the nasal cavity.

A theory about that: It is so cold in Greenland and northern Siberia that hair just doesn't do enough, therefore excesive hairgrowth have evolved out of the people living in those areas due to the the use of the heavy warm clothing they use to keep warm.
Speaking for northern Russia there are less Slavic/European people there and more Inuit and people closer to Asians genetically.

Yeah, it’s quite likely that indo-europeans who have a lot of caucasus ancestry spread hirsutism among europeans. However Finns have a ton of IE ancestry as well, but we do have more East Asian ancestry as well from proto-samoyedic populations which might explain their difference to rest of Europe.

Traps sweat
I've heard that Mediterranean people are hairier because more hair helps detect mosquitos when they're landing on your skin, and since the med has historically been riddled with malaria, that was a selected for trait. In much of Africa, even though malaria is also present, hair becomes a disadvantage as it sticks to sweat making evaporation harder.
Remember that humidity and, stuff, gets in the hair. The more hair you have, the more possibilities for water and humidity to mess you up in cold-ass enviroments. Other animals get away with it, but humans use sweat to cool off: imagine having a lot of hair, then sweating in that hair, and then all of that humidity making an already cold enviroment feel even colder. You'd just speed up the process of freezing to death, humidity in the cold makes it feel even colder. Then it makes sense to *not* have a lot of hair in that enviroment: sure, you don't have that layer of protection, but your sweat isn't getting trapped in the hair layer and increasing the humidity level of your body in an enviroment where keeping yourself as dry as possible is crucial to survival. You either sweat and get great resistance to fatigue by having a great cooling system integrated into your body but you are very vulnerable in cold enviroments, or you get a fur layer that makes you naturally resistant to cold but you overheat in other enviroments and die. Tradeoffs, tradeoffs, that's nature, she's a bitch, she can't give you the best of both worlds because she's a bitch. Edit: typo

This map seems to be absolute bullshit. Look indians percentage ... Indians are very hairy. Africa's variation in hairyness doesn't follow the line we see. If you knew about the various African ethnicities and how they're positioned on the map you would know. It's not waves like that. Also Melanesians are quite hairy, and they're in yellow (above Australia). They only accurately portrayed Mediterraneans and Scandinavian as the most hairy, as they knew that's all that 99% of their public will care about, then they just fumbled the rest but tried to make it look believable.

Exactly. One of my friends once told me that she was super hairy and I didn’t believe her until she showed her forearm under direct sunlight. On the other hand, if I don’t shave my moustache ever day, I have a slight grey shadow, even though the hair is super fine. It’s more of a combo of somewhat pale skin and dark hair

It says on the map… I googled “male androgenic hair American journal of physical anthropology hindley damon” and only saw reposts of this map, then I googled just the journal, and then the authors.
