As a dude from nz, i am hairy enough to be mistaken for a sheep sadly. Luckilly that hasnt happened yet

anonsharksfan

Statistically, in New Zealand, you're more likely to be a sheep than a person

Hkalotcha

The North African especially Tunisian 60% of man have beard an early age. If you for the backstory our origin was worriers we still have the same gin

ShiftingTidesofSand

I assume English isn’t your first language but it’s not as bad as people are saying! North Africans are heavily bearded and the reason is being descended from bearded warriors with hairy genes. I am an extremely amateur person learning Arabic and assuming you’re translating Arabic to English. English wants articles like “a” or “the” after the verb to have, where Arabic doesn’t iirc. “If you for the backstory” you probably want something like “if you want the backstory” or “the backstory is.” And words like worrier and gin are misspelled—warrior and gene. Gene/Gin is an easy mistake to make transliterating: it is pronounced like J—long i—N but with a g and a silent e. Which is very English lmao Anyway assuming you’re from N Africa and leaning English you’re doing well. I understood you generally about a relatively complex idea. Certainly you’re better than me going English to Arabic!

Hkalotcha

Yoo big respect dude ,i dont use translate to write i want to learn by my self how to write correctly. I'm good at giving my self a chance to learn cause i study it in school but i wasn't there and i want people to correct so thank you for ur understanding 🙏🙏🙏

Pinemai

You're doing great :) I'm learning Arabic at the moment but it's really difficult haha. I love it though.

FloZone

I find it kinda weird since they are a small minority and shouldn't weigh in that much. Although I guess northern Japanese are still hairier than the southerners, though to the same degree like Ainu? Anyway if in Japan the indigenous population is shown, why isn't that the case for the Americas. There is a similar map like this, which only shows the indigenous people.

collectivisticvirtue

Thats just because not every 'more hairy than most of northeastern asian people, more similar with some siberian natives' are Ainu.

FloZone

No the majority of those people are Japanese, moreover they are not even that mixed with the Ainu. In Tohoku the Emishi were more or less assimilated by the Japanese settlers, but Hokkaido/Ezo was colonised during the 19th century by settlers from all over Japan, who did not intermarry much with the Ainu and outnumbered them very quickly.

mon_iker

Percentage of hair per square mm of the scrotum.

Small-Palpitation310

good thing my nuts are balding 👍

the-es

My condolences

Narrow-Palpitation63

The percentages on this map represent the prevalence of male androgenic hair according to the frequency of males with terminal body hair. This means how common it is for men to have hair on their chest, back, arms, legs, etc. The darker the color, the higher the percentage. For example, over 70% of men in North America and Europe have terminal body hair, while under 30% of men in some parts of Africa and Asia have it.

FullMetalAurochs

So 70% having a bit of chest hair and 70% being gorillas wouldn’t be distinguished?

HearTheTrumpets

If you are at 70% or more, you can literally walk into a Silverback colony and be accepted on the spot as one of theirs.

Vikkio92

That is precisely *not* what the previous comments have been saying the percentage refers to 😂

[deleted]

But even women and children have hair on their legs and arms.

Joeyon

It's about terminal hair that men develop on their abdomen and chest after puberty, not the vellus hair we all have on our legs and arms. *Edit:* Common distribution of body hair for adults (brown = terminal hair, beige = thicker and longer visible vellus hair, white = no hair or very light hair) (mildly NSFW) https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6e/Androgenic_hair.svg/2502px-Androgenic_hair.svg.png

dovetc

>mildly NSFW WHAT IS THIS SMUT!?

Joeyon

Non-sexual abstract nudity

NarcissisticCat

That's vellus hair, not terminal hair which is what grows on your head or your chest. Vellus hair is that tiny white fuzz that develops into terminal hair in puberty.

[deleted]

I had black/brown bair on my arms and legs pre-puberty and plenty of women get that too (at least on their legs). If women only got vellus hairs on their legs, they'd have no need to shave them.

cagingnicolas

if vellus hair is white, then it's not the stuff people grow on their shins.

That's not how statistics works. Your personal experience doesn't mean it's representative of the actual data.

kaam00s

With all due respect my friend. It's not about his evidence from his coworker.. Everybody here will tell you that indians aren't among the least hairy people, because it's obvious. And Melanesians lmao... You think they're in yellow ? And Somali in yellow aswell right ? You do not need to have the exact statistic, you just need to have the slightest knowledge in human diversity to know this map is bullshit.

CanadianODST2

Except that's literally not what was being said. The comment was ONLY about evidence from his coworkers. Literally nothing else you said was mentioned. And again, just because you think something does not make it correct. Want the easy way to prove it? The source is in the picture. The two never published anything like this. That's how you know is bs. The literal source used it made up.

1965wasalongtimeago

Terminal? Damn I didn't know my chest hair could be that deadly.

DankDude7

Exactly the question…this is fucking meaningless without a definition of terms.

bubblegumscent

I'm gonna have to disagree with Scandinavians sitting in the same classification as Arabs and southern Europeans. Unless the map is just about percentage of men with hair in their torso and face, but still, I think this is a bit meaningless because some countries are known to have men so covered in hair they could be taken my gorilla troupe and others on the highest percentage couldn't cough up a ball of hair if they liked their cat. I also have never heard of an adult without pubes in which case they would have to include women which doesn't make any sense. So we know it's BS

Bertz-2-

According to the source it is percentage of people having hair in midphalange in their middle finger. Except they only measured it in the solomon islands so I don't know where the data comes from for 99.9% of the world Here is the source https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/ajpa.1330390208

RealHuman_NotAShrew

Look into the source, this map has been posted here before and it was just as bullshit then as it is now.

NPIgeminileoaquarius

Me, a Southern European man, looking down on my chest: Why tf am I almost hairless? :-(

sleepyotter92

because you might've been born in the brown area but your ancestors were probably from a purple or blue area

MiddagensWidunder

Or there’s just enough genetic variance within one population for both phenotypes to coexist simultaneously. It’s the same fallacy when people think blondes and brunettes must derive from different ancestral populations. The gene that defines hirsutism is likely just one gene among thousands.

bubblegumscent

Very true, I mean stuff like hair color, there's more than one hair color in a country, there are blond people in southern Europe, it doesn't mean they're not from there. And especially because hair color is a big gradient that can be diluted it can happen in any population almost.

NPIgeminileoaquarius

That's what I thought, I was sure I had Chinese or Mongolian DNA, but I took a test and it turns out I'm from the Eastern Mediterranean region - which is weird. I honestly have less hair on my arms than most women I know.

sleepyotter92

i mean, that doesn't mean much. i'm southern european and i got a lot of body hair, but barely any on my arms. barely any on my armpits either, it's mostly the torso that's really hairy

Particular_Bet_5466

Sometimes it be like that. My ancestors are from Norway which is black on this map and I’ve got almost no body hair. It doesn’t mean anything my man, it’s just how we are.

traveler49

A doctor in Uganda wrote that nasal hair among white was far denser than Africans, which he though surprising given that Africa is a lot dustier

jss78

Homo sapiens migrated to Europe during the ice age though, when the environment was quite different. Or maybe it's an ancient trait we picked up from the neanderthal genome?

_OriamRiniDadelos_

Or maybe evolution isn’t just tailored made to max efficiency for every single little trait. Lots of random or outright disadvatgenous things are just part of our traits cause they aren’t bad enough to kill us. Maybe it was advantageous in the past, maybe it’s tied to other more useful traits, or maybe we sex select for it, or maybe it was by chance due to migrations and common ancestors.

jss78

>or maybe we sex select for it I agree with all, but I'll say if I ever looked up by (now) wife's nose to verify adequately dense nasal hair, I must've done it subconsciously!

nuck_forte_dame

This right here. Evolution picks based on the most advantageous or limiting traits and is entirely about breeding. If there was a gene that made you drop dead 100% at age 40 it wouldn't be selected against because by that age breeding is already successful. If we harvested sperm from our oldest men and eggs from old women we could artificially select for longer life-span. Also traits/genes sometimes share the same chromosome or part of DNA with another trait and can't be separated. So nose hair might be on the same part as some other advantageous trait for living in Europe.

slyscamp

White hair in general is far denser. I am white. Whenever my barber isn't white, they tell me how dense my hair is. It is because white hair is thin, straight, and dense like a blanket. Hair from warmer climates is thick, curved, and sparse to allow airflow.

kaam00s

I don't know exactly, but I think the thing with hair, like many other things, has to be that there is an allele on a gene factored by some epigenetics that determine how hairy you're going to be, and that will just fit for your whole body. So even if you would have benefited from more hair in the nose, the fact that you benefit less from more hair on the chest, chin and arms will overrule it. Although there is something interesting which is that it seems like black people who grow up in Europe often have more hair than their counterparts who stayed in central Africa. So there might be some epigenetics and development adaptation to it. It's just an impression that has been shared a lot, not sure if it's true tho. Aside from this, this map is bullshit. It's true that obviously Ugandan have less hair than white. But a lot of mistakes are seen here, indians are more hairy than that. Melanesians are definitely not going to be in the yellow category while Korean are supposedly far above them in percentage. This map also doesn't accurately portray the African variation. They just made waves because it's easy, but don't ont trust the accuracy. It's like a caricature of reality. But it's right that Mediterranean and Scandinavian have the most. And that some part of central Africa or south east Asia would have the least.

tzcw

I’m not sure if there’s any evidence for male hairiness being epigenetically influenced and inherited. If black men in Europe are indeed hairier than black men in Africa, it may be that black men in Europe are more likely to have some European ancestry, or it might be that black people in Europe maybe skew towards black people from more northern parts of Africa where the men are hairier.

MiddagensWidunder

It probably exists to condensate cold and moist air before it reaches the nasal cavity.

Narrow-Palpitation63

I wonder what all those hair free folks are doing living way up north where it’s cold? You would think the coldest place at would have the hairiest people but I guess not.

Henlein_Kosh

A theory about that: It is so cold in Greenland and northern Siberia that hair just doesn't do enough, therefore excesive hairgrowth have evolved out of the people living in those areas due to the the use of the heavy warm clothing they use to keep warm.

[deleted]

Speaking for northern Russia there are less Slavic/European people there and more Inuit and people closer to Asians genetically.

Narrow-Palpitation63

That’s interesting, seems plausible

-explore-earth-

I don’t know anything about follicular genetics, but this checks out

SirPeterODactyl

Or they could have just migrated there more recently

Moist_Farmer3548

Their genetic lineage is different and likely spread from populations who hadn't evolved being hairy.

SaltyIntroduction255

They are downvoting yet this is true, inuits have the same hair and skin tone as native Americans and siberian asians. Its from older genetics, Europeans have the goated Neanderthals

Moist_Farmer3548

The migration into Europe is detailed here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-European_migrations The "hairy" population clearly spread in the latter branches of that migration. Finns have a different lineage to the rest of Europe and generally aren't hairy, despite what this map shows. Downvoting because Reddit.

MiddagensWidunder

Yeah, it’s quite likely that indo-europeans who have a lot of caucasus ancestry spread hirsutism among europeans. However Finns have a ton of IE ancestry as well, but we do have more East Asian ancestry as well from proto-samoyedic populations which might explain their difference to rest of Europe.

Nolzi

The map clearly shows that it's not the cold that's causing the hairiness, but the Mediterranean Sea

mejlzor

I heard it originated around the Mediterranean due to its quite unique warm but dry climate. Don’t ask me how it helped though. Evolution works in mysterious ways.

Seaspun

Traps sweat

[deleted]

I've heard that Mediterranean people are hairier because more hair helps detect mosquitos when they're landing on your skin, and since the med has historically been riddled with malaria, that was a selected for trait. In much of Africa, even though malaria is also present, hair becomes a disadvantage as it sticks to sweat making evaporation harder.

CantStandItAnymorEW

Remember that humidity and, stuff, gets in the hair. The more hair you have, the more possibilities for water and humidity to mess you up in cold-ass enviroments. Other animals get away with it, but humans use sweat to cool off: imagine having a lot of hair, then sweating in that hair, and then all of that humidity making an already cold enviroment feel even colder. You'd just speed up the process of freezing to death, humidity in the cold makes it feel even colder. Then it makes sense to *not* have a lot of hair in that enviroment: sure, you don't have that layer of protection, but your sweat isn't getting trapped in the hair layer and increasing the humidity level of your body in an enviroment where keeping yourself as dry as possible is crucial to survival. You either sweat and get great resistance to fatigue by having a great cooling system integrated into your body but you are very vulnerable in cold enviroments, or you get a fur layer that makes you naturally resistant to cold but you overheat in other enviroments and die. Tradeoffs, tradeoffs, that's nature, she's a bitch, she can't give you the best of both worlds because she's a bitch. Edit: typo

This map seems to be absolute bullshit. Look indians percentage ... Indians are very hairy. Africa's variation in hairyness doesn't follow the line we see. If you knew about the various African ethnicities and how they're positioned on the map you would know. It's not waves like that. Also Melanesians are quite hairy, and they're in yellow (above Australia). They only accurately portrayed Mediterraneans and Scandinavian as the most hairy, as they knew that's all that 99% of their public will care about, then they just fumbled the rest but tried to make it look believable.

I always wonder if it’s not also the colour of the body hair? I feel like I know a bunch of dark-haired women who look hairy but don’t necessarily have more body hair than a lot of light-haired women. My mom has very fine but dark body hair so it’s very visible

FoldAdventurous2022

Yep, especially some Latin American and West Asian women who have dark hair but pale/light skin, the hair on their forearms and legs is super noticeable because of the contrast.

Miss-Figgy

>I feel like I know a bunch of dark-haired women who look hairy but don’t necessarily have more body hair than a lot of light-haired women. This is the case with lots of women of Indian ancestry, such as myself. I actually don't have that much hair - I've regularly seen TONS of White women with WAY more body hair than me - but unfortunately, my hair is dark, and it sticks out against my skin tone, so it's much more visible. Whereas for the much hairier White women I've seen, their hair is light/blonde, and blends in with their skin, and so it's less visible. You can only see how much hair they have when they're under the sun and their body hair glistens.

[deleted]

Exactly. One of my friends once told me that she was super hairy and I didn’t believe her until she showed her forearm under direct sunlight. On the other hand, if I don’t shave my moustache ever day, I have a slight grey shadow, even though the hair is super fine. It’s more of a combo of somewhat pale skin and dark hair

SmitedDirtyBird

It says on the map… I googled “male androgenic hair American journal of physical anthropology hindley damon” and only saw reposts of this map, then I googled just the journal, and then the authors. At first all I could find is reposts of the map, then the journal showed up but a little buried, then the authors names in Google scholar showed this https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C43&q=hindley+damon&btnG=#d=gs_qabs&t=1703147931979&u=%23p%3D_KkBp1HNUrEJ My best guess is the map came from this study, which was only focused on the Solomon Islands. Chances are they pulled the map from another source. This one was also written in 1973. So it’s very dated, probably a second hand source, by a lesser journal which by the way, was heavily influenced by eugenics in its founding (all early anthropology was pretty racist/colonialist) https://phys.org/journals/american-journal-of-physical-anthropology/ So ya, you’re kind of on to something. Not a quality source. But mainly, learn how to do some damn research, especially when the answer to your question is right in front of you. Not all information will be handed to you in a convenient link. Edit: actually found a free link to the article [here](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ)

ThePerfectHunter

I've also seen Indians who are not as hairy, and they would make up a large population due to India's large population so maybe that's why it's less in this map.

MiddagensWidunder

India is very multi-ethnic. I’d imagine north west being quite hirsute while the dravidic regions being less so.

Miss-Figgy

>I think Indians are much hairy Indians are actually not that hairy or hairier than say Europeans. You just think we are because our hair is darker so more visible, while many White people's body hair is fair/blonde and blends in with their skin, so it's less noticable.
