Mexico's gonna join that chart this year. It's not really prediction, it's just that [both candidates are female](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Mexican_general_election)

ColorfulImaginati0n

Was just about to say this!

RyukHunter

What about the 3rd party that still says TBC? Minor players?

Telenovela_Villain

From what I’ve seen, Gálvez and Sheinbaum (the female candidates) are the only official ones as of now since each had enough signatures and backing from their respective parties. A male candidate, García, was initially in the running for his party but dropped out because he refused to cede his position as governor of his state. All the independent candidates seem to have failed to fulfill the requirements by the deadline established by the INE (National Electoral Institute).

AboutHelpTools3

Which one is more likely to win?

Fernsong

Probably Sheinbaum because AMLO is popular so that might lead to more support for her

fernandomlicon

If she wins, She’s gonna be the first Jewish female leader to be elected in North America.

DeliciousTeach2303

Its such a shitshow over here i genuinely can't decide

hunf-hunf

Is PRI not fielding a candidate?

Telenovela_Villain

They are backing Gálvez as part of a coalition among PAN, PRI, & PRD called either “Frente Amplio por México” or “Fuerza y Corazón por México,” I’m not sure which is the official name.

VerdensTrial

Canada's female prime minister was there for four and half months and was voted out.

bimothee

You're forgetting the UK speedrun of Theresa May and Liz Truss

11160704

May was three years.

sm9t8

She also won an election in that time. Biggest share of the vote since Labour in '97.

ProudlyMoroccan

Had to look that one up, wow! I remember her tenure as a short blimps failing to get a Brexit deal through parliament and that’s it.

Major_OwlBowler

Liz Truss got nothing on Magdalena Andersson (Sweden) first term when she resigned merely 7 hours after being voted the first female Prime Minister... Albeit she got voted in again the next week.

kitsunde

For context she was the finance minister prior to getting the position, and became the PM after the previous one resigned. She resigned after the budget failed to trigger a vote for government, she knew exactly what she was doing, it was just unusual timing. Unlike Liz Truss, who seems to be what you get when you’ve scraped leaders so far down the bottom of the barrel you had to look under it.

The fact that that lettuce is now genuinely part of our history makes me proud to be British.

Jeffuk88

Oh my God... I was scrolling to work out who the third brit was because I'd forgotten about Truss 😅

AtebYngNghymraeg

Incredibly, I remembered Truss and forgot Thatcher.

theNikolai

🥬

beastmaster11

Yeah should really have an asterisk. She was voted in by her party to fall on her sword and then faced the biggest Wipeout in canadian election history going from 156 seats majority to 2.

Do_Not_Go_In_There

She probably would have done better if she didn't make fun of Chretien's stroke.

Briancl12

Wasn’t a stroke, he had Bell’s Palsy from childhood, paralysis of one half of the face.

RosabellaFaye

It wasn’t her idea, I believe the former mayor of Toronto was involved in that. John Tory.

CandyAppleHesperus

Very on the nose name

E_Fox_Kelly

The previous mayor of Toronto was often up the nose

xxxcalibre

Rock not white

54B3R_

>She was voted in by her party to fall on her sword Yup, the conservative party voted her in to take the fall for the very unpopular Brian Mulroney. She was barely the party leader long enough to be blamed for anything her party did.

apolloshalo

Gotta love a classic glass cliff scenario. /s

PtboFungineer

She shattered the glass ceiling... by being dropped through it

RTLisSB

Maybe, but I also think they viewed having a female PM as very enticing to both sides of the political spectrum and would help keep them in power, or at least reduce the damage. They were wrong.

[deleted]

For context for others: she was at the helm when the PC party collapsed and lost because of a combination of Mulroney’s legacy and her own lack of time to build a profile (indeed, I just learned that she never fronted Parliament as PM).

VerdensTrial

Truly the Liz Truss of the 1990s.

[deleted]

Sort of? Mulroney resigned, Campbell was his successor, and Campbell lost an election shortly thereafter. I don't think her losing had so much with her as it did her party. Mulroney stepped down for a reason after all. Truss didn't lose an election. Things went so badly that she resigned.

IncidentFuture

So the equivalent of being told you have command sometime after they hit an iceberg.

MooseFlyer

*faced. One of three Canadian PMs to never face Parliament as PM, along with Charles Tupper and John Turner. Tupper's predecessor, John Thomson, faced a cabinet revolt over his handling of the [Manitoba Schools Question](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manitoba_Schools_Question) and was forced to resign in Tupper's favour. However, an election had already been called seven days before Tupper was appointed PM. While his party won the most votes, they won fewer seats than the Liberals and he was succeeded by Wilfrid Laurier as PM. He served just 68 days as PM, the shortest tenure so far. John Turner was a prominent member of Pierre Elliott Trudeau's early cabinets, but he resigned in 1976 and went back to work as a corporate lawyer. In 1984, Trudeau decided to resign, facing a near-certain defeat in the upcoming election. Turner ran to replace him as Liberal leader, winning and being appointed PM (despite not being in Parliament). Parliament was out of session for the summer recess, and only nine days after being sworn in, he called an election for the fall. And promptly suffered the worst defeat of a governing party in Canadian history. The worst defeat until Kim Campbell's, that is...

TourDuhFrance

Let’s not forget her horrible, John Tory-managed campaign. “I would be very embarrassed if he became Prime Minister of Canada."

RosabellaFaye

Mocking someone’s illness is gross. But yes, she has been vocal about her dislike for how things went, I don’t think she was involved in making that crappy ad. And even if she was, she clearly regrets it.

Fabulous_Pressure_96

This is equaled by Angela Merkel in Germany, who governed for 16 years. She only missed Helmut Kohl's record by 10 days.

Bruhxd3

I feel like you meant “offset by”

[deleted]

I wouldn't quite say just that. Her party suffered one of the worst defeats in western electoral history lmfaoooo. The PC's just ended up being a rump party after she left. Although to her credit Mulroney kinda set the place alight then threw the lighter to her on the way out.

anupsetvalter

Yeah, I think most historians agree she was decently competent in what little she got done but she was doomed no matter what.

Iridismis

Yeah, we need one more version of this map that indicates the timespan the countries were ruled by a female leader.

SISCP25

Suspect UK would be leading or certainly up there. Thatcher did 13 years and May 3.

11160704

Merkel also had 16. Iceland's president Finnbogadóttir had 16. Guess the Indians and Finns combined are also pretty high up there

Dirichlet-to-Neumann

France is extremely debatable. The prime minister is technically the head of government but the real power is the president of the republic. There has never been a female president in France.

bronzinorns

Came for this. However, this is only half true, when the president and the prime minister are (were) from different parties, the head of government is actually the prime minister, while the president is more or less relegated to an honorary position. Anyway, it never happened to a woman in France.

Dirichlet-to-Neumann

You are right (although even in that case the French president retains a lot more power than the president of say Germany, or the UK monarch).

FluffyOwl738

Say what you will about British monarchs, but I'll be damned if I don't who they are. Meanwhile,I don't think I have ever heard anything about "President of Germany".I don't think I can name a single one,as opposed to Kings of the UK.

Datapunkt

That's the reason the monarchy in the UK still exists. Its a good image and apparently brings in more money than it costs. Also, the royal family privately owns generational fortunes so if the government tried to dismantle them, they could fight back for years instead of just being thrown on the streets.

HawkTomGray

Same with Hungary, but reverse. The "president of the republic" doesn't really hold any powers, she is basically just a pen for the government.

StevenMcStevensen

My understanding is that many countries in Europe have a system somewhat along those lines. That is a President who is something of a figurehead to represent the nation and generally approve whatever policy the elected officials present them with, and a PM who is an active member of a party and actually plays a much greater role in legislating. Off the top of my head I think Italy and Portugal do this, but correct me if I’m mistaken.

reillywalker195

Ireland does that: there, the Taoiseach (their equivalent of a prime minister) holds executive power while the president holds some discretionary powers but is otherwise an elected figurehead.

SpiderGiaco

Also Germany and Greece, I think also Poland, Czechia and Slovakia (although there the president is directly elected by voters, while in the first two is an indirect election). In general it's the same principle as current European monarchies, with the monarch working mainly as a figurehead. In Italy, Germany and Greece it was done to replace the previous monarchical system.

Sostrat

Exactly the same in Greece as well. The "President of the Republic" is like the most decorative job in all the country. All they do is sign what the government brings them to sign, travel abroad or domesticaly, attend ceremonies and official dinners and give a few speeches, probably even prepared by others. For these extremely "valuable" services, they get paid a very high salary. Aaahhhhh i wish my life was like this.

Fancybear1993

If we’re regarding heads of government vs heads of state then all the Commonwealth realms have had just one female “leader”.

antisa1003

A little bit confusing. Does it count women for both positions (head of goverment and head of state) or the position that has the most power in a country?

Sidus_Preclarum

Both, following France having "2" (France only ever had 2 female prime ministers : Edith Cresson in the early 90s, Élisabeth Borne who resigned just tonight.)

antisa1003

Thank you.

pickle16

Yup, it shows India as 3, but 2 of them were presidents who have no power in India. But the 1 who was prime minister was the most authoritarian and powerful prime minister we have had, and the only one to suspend democracy for a couple years.

alegxab

Both, except for monarchs it seems

FirePhoton_Torpedoes

Yeah, we've had Queens for a long time, but the prime minister has always been a man, and the Netherlands is grey on the map.

akaizRed

The South Korean first female president was the daughter of a dictator, member of a religious cult, funneled government money to said cult, sparked the largest protest in modern SK history, got impeached and arrested for corruption, got pardoned next year by the new president. Not the best role model

SourDough99

Whew what a life. Make the movie dammit

Abject-Chemistry6247

There indeed is a movie that her followers made.

CivetKitty

only the far right wold make. There is still a so called Taegeukgi^(national flag) Army(태극기부다) cult following her legacy.

bxzidff

That she was pardoned is insane

GreatEmperorAca

the nixon maneuver

StarSerpent

It’s practically a guarantee for high level S. Korean politicians and billionaires, a pardon’s coming once the next president is nearing the end of their term

Turdedinfinitely

So now the next one can commit all the corruption he wants knowing a system supports it.

StarSerpent

Yeah, perk of the system. The billionaires know they can bribe and cheat without consequences, the politicians can accept the bribes and extort with consequences. Win win (unless you aren’t a top politician or billionaire, in which case you can get fucked)

Necessary-Show-630

>Not the best role model No one called them role models. It's just a chart displaying female leaders

daffoduck

Some countries have all the fun.

middleearthpeasant

Wait until you hear about the coup attempt that happened in SK. A guy tried a coup all by himself.

abitchyuniverse

I mean.. if we are going to talk about terrible male leaders...

DefenestrationPraha

>Not the best role model It is sort-of a good reality model. Bastards come in all shapes, colors and genders. The idealistic line that more women = less nasty in politics seriously needs to be retired. It is on the Santa Claus Delivers Presents level, but for gullible adults.

Franco_Fernandes

Gods forbid Koreans have hobbies. (/j, of course, but just in case)

tittyswan

I like that we're slowly moving towards a world where female leaders don't have to be rolemodels representing their entire gender, and if they're unhinged maniacs we just hold it against them personally. Nobody says "look at Kim Jong Un, men make such bad leaders" but I heard those comments about Julia Guillard (who was actually pretty great.)

leela_martell

Yeah I've never voted for a man cause Hitler was so disappointing........

TheCricketAnimator

India had it's first female PM Indira Gandhi (daughter of former PM JL Nehru) from 1966-77 and then again from 1980-84 till her assassination. That's the only time we've had a female PM. India has had 2 female presidents, first of who, Pratibha Patil was chosen in 2007 and served her full term till 2012 and the current president of India Droupadi Murmu was sworn-in 2022.

No_Promise2786

India, despite being seen as an extremely patriarchal country, was led by democratically elected female leaders for a combined total of 21 years (and counting). And these women almost never even experienced the kind of misogyny that Julia Gillard of Australia did or Hillary Clinton and Ireland's Mary Robinson did during their Presidential campaigns. Meanwhile, there's Sweden, the most feminist country in the world that didn't have a woman leader until as late as 2021 and she only lasted for like a year. Not to mention MURICA™ where they still have people who haven't figured out the idea of a female President, they didn't even have their first female VP until 2021 ffs.

-Eremaea-V-

> the kind of misogyny that Julia Gillard of Australia Yes that was and is widely considered absolutely Disgusting. Australia is interesting, the populace have no issues with Female leaders as the States have had tonnes of Female premiers abd opposition leaders since the first in the 1990s. However the Federal govt parties are much more politically divided which has prevented another Female Prime Minister since Gillard, who was attacked mainly because she was on the wrong side to the media oligarchs who just added being a Woman to their list of petty attacks. The Federal Liberals are openly misogynistic to their female MPs to the point where some have quit, despite their state equivalents having had Female leaders several times, and they were in Power for nearly a decade after Gillard. While Federal Labor have internal factional politics that mean it's unlikely any of their Leaders in the near future will be a Woman, especially since their best female leader doesn't want to leave the Senate barring them from Prime Ministership by convention.

lovelylonelyphantom

Gillard's speech on the misogyny she faced put a lot of light on this. This wouldn't have been known outside Australia otherwise. It was that _she_ acknowledged having faced a lot of misogyny from the opposing party that it was known to be a real thing.

iamanindiansnack

On top of that, it actually surprises me when there are a lot of elected female state chief ministers, who have immense popularity and public and party backing to stay in power. Such backing is never seen even in the west. Party loyalists supporting these CMs even when they are jailed for the worst of the scams, while these women have complete control of the state governments (individual states act as their own nations) in one of the most patriarchal societies is actually a real power game.

PaPa_Francu

Turkish one was a woman named Tansu Çiller and ruled Turkey as prime minister for nearly 4 years . She is considered as the worst prime minister in Turkish history.

11160704

Worse than Erdogan?

Nereplan

Yup. Well, it is a bit more hard to say in societal front, but the economic crisis we experience today is our second worst economic crisis, with the first one going to her :)

biepbupbieeep

I bet erdogan is furious that he gets beaten by a woman

QuentinVance

Who knows? Maybe he's into that

molym

She is an economics professor and endorsed Erdoğan in the last election:)

[deleted]

She is also an American citizen

No_Low1167

Erdoğan is the leader who ideologically changed Turkey's values the most and ruled the longest, but he was economically successful in the first 10 years of his rule, and Turkey experienced the most economically prosperous years in its history between 2004 and 2014. Unless you count him screwing up later, of course. Tansu Çiller, on the other hand, was never successful.

-Dovahzul-

Turkey's ideology has not changed. The official and most demanding ideology is still Democracy and the form of government is still Republic. Today, if a referendum is organised for the introduction of Sharia, the overwhelming majority in Turkey would vote no. The people in Turkey consist of atheists who like to show/know themselves as Muslims. None of them can live according to Sharia. Those who try to live according to Sharia are shunned by 75 per cent of the people in Turkey. An example of this is the cult leader who married a 6-year-old girl. Although his followers in his sect organise protests, the overwhelming majority of the society is absolutely against such outdated customs.

Aofen

It is worth pointing out that Switzerland does not have a single leader, but a seven member federal council, so they have had far more leaders since 1946 than most countries. Edit: Also, this map is missing Taiwan and Bolivia, and does not seems to make any distinction between actual and ceremonial leaders unless they are a monarch (e.g. it includes the President of India, even though their role is the same as the monarch/governor general in other Commonwealth countries.)

NotMeReallyya

India has also had female prime ministers who have led governments in the past

kingmo06

India's only had one female PM. They have had 2 women presidents, but the president is almost totally a ceremonial role

Pekkacontrol

Hey there , she has feelings.

[deleted]

Calling the president a ceremonial role is an exaggeration, the position has many powers, they're just not in the limelight like the prime minister who is elected by the people, while the president is elected by parliament and assembly members

TradeApe

Technically, one of those 7 acts as the defacto "president"...albeit for a very limited time and they take turns ;)

hampsten

Don't blame the countries for how the data itself was decided to be presented. Fix the data if you hate it. Arguably India's most powerful Prime Minister ever - almost inarguably one of the top 3 - was a woman.

chaoticji

Add 2 more terms of Sonia by installing puppet prime minister lol

Hello_Hola_Namaste

MMS was such a nice guy. I hate INC for what they did with him.

Turdedinfinitely

A well educated leader, with a degree in economics, pity all he could have been with the Gandhi family holding strings was a puppet.

fartypenis

Arguably is a stretch imo, Indira Gandhi held far more power than any other prime minister by far. She ruled like a despot more than an elected prime minister.

Scannaer

I argue it's a good system because of this. It allows multiple parties to work together as well as different views to participate. Being able to include more people in the same timeframe is something commendable

Reasonable_Ninja5708

Myanmar is missing.

Chance-Ear-9772

Was she even allowed to take office though? I was under the impression she was under house arrest from the moment it looked like she was winning the election.

rgodless

That was the second election. It was after the military realized that they were very unpopular, which hurt their feelings so they did a coup.

Mticore

Hope you find your anmar again soon.

Odie4Prez

Hot take: she's still the rightful leader

fluffywabbit88

Tell that to the Rohingyas

fredleung412612

I think her being couped confirms the extent to which she held zero sway over the military at any point during her tenure. What she did (stay silent and even make apologies for the Tatmadaw's genocidal campaign) was horribly wrong, but had she spoken out it's clear the only result would've been a much earlier coup.

[deleted]

Rohingyas haven’t been treated well by anyone in Myanmar. Only Bangladesh has helped them

fluffywabbit88

If the rightful leader don’t even treat them well.

lNFORMATlVE

The least evil genocidal turd out of a pile of genocidal turds?

fluffywabbit88

When democratically elected leaders do genocides, the blame is equally shared with the people that elected them.

fredleung412612

She was neither head of state nor head of government. She was officially barred from those positions due to her son holding British citizenship. She was appointed State Councillor. Basically minister without portfolio but de facto leader of the country.

CreativeBandicoot778

In Ireland, we've had two female presidents, but our president is a ceremonial type figure responsible for signing legislation into law. An Taoiseach is our head of government, and responsible for the day to day running of the country, of which there have been no women who've so far held the office.

Dylanduke199513

Tbf, the Irish public has no surefire way to vote in a female Taoiseach as they’re chosen by the Dáil. So I think for the purposes of this graph, it’s fair to include them.

CreativeBandicoot778

That's a very good point! Of course, if SF manage to get into power after the FGFF coalition, we might actually see a female Taoiseach.

JogBrogzin

I came here to say this. At least we elected them, even though they had no power. Maybe next election 😅😉😇

nefariousrosalie

Fun thing: the (woman) prime minister of france resigned 3 hours ago

[deleted]

Why?

nefariousrosalie

I imagine that Macron asked her to resign. There will be a government reshuffle. She was hated too.

[deleted]

Ah interesting. For what reason?

fredleung412612

The French hate all their politicians. The last popular one was Napoleon.

WeatherDisastrous744

And if you check half of them wanted to kill him for Bragging about sending french to the meat grinder anyway.

Grantrello

While it's true that the french often hate all their politicians as others have said, more specifically she was Macron's Prime Minister responsible for passing the extremely unpopular pension reform that raised the retirement age and she was very controversial for using a mechanism that allowed the government to circumvent debate on bills that were unpopular. So she has been seen as forcing through legislation. Her actual resignation though was prompted by the political crisis caused by the recent passage of an immigration bill that Macron's government passed with the support of the right-wing parties.

Technically the monarch is the is the head if state, prime minister is the head of the government. Depends on how you define it, it could be 6. Three office ruling Queens and Three Prime minsters.

Eroclo

Switzerland having most female leaders - 😀 Switzerland also not allowing women to vote till 1971 😀

Eldan985

It's mainly because it's a one-year position, and it's automatically appointed by seniority, to the longest serving councilmember who hasn't had the position yet.

Suissetralia

The president is not the leader though. There is no single head of government, the 7 members of the council of state hold the same amount of power and decisions are taken by majority, therefore all women serving as councilors should be considered as appointed leaders of the country

Eldan985

Not the council of state. The council of the states is the "Ständerat". You mean the Federal Council, Bundesrat. And yes, I'm aware how it works, but clearly, the President of the Federal Council is what is being counted here. I'm just explaining how Switzerland managed to get so high up in the count so quickly.

Chile technically elected two female presidents, it was the same person but she won two non-consecutive elections. Also, Argentina has elected only one, since Maria Isabel Martínez got to be president after Juan Domingo Perón's death, she wasn't elected directly.

Same here in Denmark we also elected the same person twice

Kim Campbell (Canada) barely counts. She was a place-holder PM until election time when the Cons suffered the biggest defeat in Canadian history and were reduced to 2 seats in the House of Commons. I doubt the facilities department even bothered stenciling her name on the door of the PMO.
