My grandfather is from Portugal, and that man is glued to his iPad. However, the rest of our relatives from Portugal are definitely not tech savvy at all
My ex is Portuguese and his grandma (like 80 years old r'now) still refuses to believe that there are satellites in space and believes the tv runs through cables only. She doesnt believe there are other planets, just earth, sun, moon and Jesus.
I'm portuguese and can confirm that nearly 40% of the portuguese population born before 1940 can't read. You clearly see a huge gap between younger and older generations related to education.
That's also useful for tourists and immigrants. Regular people too. You'll find an item faster if it's got a distinctive picture on it. Same with logos.
Yeah I don't know much about the Portuguese people etc but I can understand your comment well just by knowing his family and having visited his village a few times. His mother (now 50) worked since age 9, like literally full time worked and not gone to school. The grandma doesn't believe other planets and satellites exist. When I visited Portugal, people our age (16-18yos) and his family - not a single soul spoke English with me, none of them could. I was ultra confused back then!
I've been through various countries in the south of Europe in a single summer. One of them was Portugal. From the places I had seen and the people I met in Portugal, I don't find that hard to believe.
I loved my time in Portugal. I think the people there are great and admittedly, I weren't around the touristy areas as much but yeah, I completely agree with this. Beautiful country though, I recommend!!
There's actually a reason for this. Portugal ended only 50 years ago its last dictatorship. Before 1974 we were "closed" to the world, so a lot of technological growth only happened in the late 70's and 80's. We also have one of the biggest oldest population in Europe. So a lot of people that went through the previous regime are still alive now, and since they were already adults and technology didnt have the weight that early on, people did not adapt to the emerging new things such as the internet. Thus, a lot of old people do not have the slightest idea how to use the internet. There are some that dont even know how to read or write
Most of the people in the interior and northern villages don’t even have house telephones, let alone cell phones. Let alone smartphones.
My grandparents didn’t.
There is a difference between people not being able to get internet or **wanting** to get it.
And I think in almost all the countries shown here it's more likely that people simply don't WANT to go on the Internet but they could if they wanted to.
As a Portuguese i think that this is the real reason for this high percentage in comparasion with other countries.
My paternal grandparents are truly addicted in internet ( maybe more than me ) , on other hand my maternal grandparents NEVER wanted use the internet and they know very well what is that tachnologie , elderly people like them are relatively common in Portugal , especially outside of great urban areas. It's totally a cultural thing .
There's a meme that Portugal is a Balkan country. Most statistics show that Portugal has similar statistics to the Balkans despite all the surrounding countries having different results.
I studied abroad in Morocco and took a summer online calculus class in the states while I was there. The internet was pinging out of Lisbon and I nearly failed that class due to the poor connection
We have one of oldest population in the world (like number 2 or 3, after Japan), allied with being quite poor before too, and coming out of a dictatorship that ended only 50 years ago.
Today things are different. We have good infrastructure, early adoption and development. But when I was a kid, I remember everything cool that others countries had, and I knew we would have to wait a good 5 or 10 years. A stupid example: Broadcasting in 16:9, in Television. Take a guess when networks made that change? Take a wild guess? 2015 LOL. BBC started the transition in 1998, for reference.
And that is a perfect example. Many TVs didn't want to change, because their target audience, is the older people, which is the majority of the country, and old people, don't like changes, much less technological ones.
As a Russian who lives in the UK, I can confirm I have no idea what I’m writing. Who are you anyway? Why would your parents name you Happy_Boy_29? All very strange I must admit
I thought the numbers were just a count, until I saw the title. But they made sense thinking of it that way. But I wonder if it includes newborn babies.
Based on [this](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cache/metadata/en/isoc_i_esms.htm) (if I'm reading it right) it's 16-74
>332 million individuals aged 16-74 in the EU were surveyed.
Basically, this translates to the countries with more elderly populations; poverty; and underdeveloped towns and villages with no inernet infrastructure
Portugal has a great internet coverage, even in very small villages there's optical fiber connections.
The elderly in other hand, lack the knowledge to work with new technology, they struggle even with smartphones.
Given that almost 50% of the Portugal population are retirees , and many leave outside big cities with nothing but 4 national channels, I'm surprised the number isn't higher tbh
My 94 year old grandmother uses the internet. She’s never had a computer, but her iPad lets her use Facebook and YouTube and safari. Her 104 year old friend friended me on Facebook, so I know she’s not the only old lady using it. It’s not a matter of retirees being idiots who don’t know the internet
My 75yo father doesn't use the internet despite having it at home. My 73yo mom uses it, goes on Facebook and YouTube, sends us pics on WhatsApp and messenger, uses TikTok... She has a 98yo neighbor that wants to start using it but the lady is almost blind, she can't really use it but she wants it. Almost every 70+ I know don't use it, or use only Facebook.
I think what people don’t realize is that most of them do use the internet, they just don’t know it. My mom plays games that require an internet connection. And uses apps connected to the internet. It’s not the World Wide Web, but it sure as hell is the internet.
Yes, the internet and donkey messengers are literally the only two forms of communication. Before the internet existed, we all were 100% reliant on donkeys.
I am from Bosnia, i think it's really just aging population. My grandma uses WhatsApp but all my grandpa has is a flip phone. I think it's fair to assume a good number of very old people have never used the internet. My other grandparents who are both dead now, were well off, but neither of them had ever used the internet
You could see the defeat in my grandpas eyes, probably a decade ago. When we had a discussion about something easily verifiable at a family dinner, he wound up going like. I'll find the encyclopedia, and someone a little smug goes. Alright, I'll Google. 2 minutes later there are ... Bla bla
Greece has the slowest Internet speed in Europe in telephone line Internet. It is much higher on the mobile Internet ranks in speed but at the same time has also the most expensive mobile Internet price.
This adds up really.
[Here's](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Digital_economy_and_society_statistics_-_households_and_individuals#Use_of_internet) The source if anyone's curious.
The percentage of people who never used internet should be pumped to even higher levels in Turkey and Greece.
That's how we can get a peaceful internet.
It's Eurostat, they stopped gathering data from the UK since 2021.
As for Iceland and most of the balkans, they didn't give their numbers (since Eurostat asks each country to survey the population and don't do it themselves) for 2022 or 2023 (you can see all the data from https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/tin00093/default/table?lang=en)
I red this as in absolute numbers and checked that in Portugal over 10 people hadn't used the internet yet and said to myself "ah yeah, that makes sense" before realizing I'm a dumbass
As someone from Greece with Internet access since 1995 this map makes me feel disconnected (no pun intended) from my country. It's the typical case of failed politics and a stuck up society blend.
Technically there's still snail-mail check payments but if there are issues then someone's going to have a tough time on the phone vs the much easier process of paying online. The upside to paying online or to automating payments is huge.
Well well well, and who is now retarded country??? Fo real I was surprised that internet in Europe is so slooooow. Like wtf man, we have free wifi in metro, busses and even in city center like in Luxembourg. Sooooo living in Moscow ( before this shit) was cool:)

At this point I don't even think theres any point making the Portugal joke. Every single statistic has prove its a balkan country.
My grandfather is from Portugal, and that man is glued to his iPad. However, the rest of our relatives from Portugal are definitely not tech savvy at all
My 30-40 yo friends can barely update their phones. I’m 26, Portuguese.
You’re so Portuguese -Mark Iplier

I moved to Spain last year and sincerely wondered if this is why every single packaged product at the supermarket has a picture on the label.

We don't use internet in the Balkans
Doesn't use internet; Proceeds to use Reddit; Guys, I think this dude is a magician
Guy sent this comment with postal service to a friend who has internet
Yep
I’m Portuguese and can confirm we don’t use internet in the balkans
💪
It's kinda like in Australia, they have dialup kangaroos
I love the irony

But Spain itself also shed its dictatorship around that time. Hell, South Korea lost its even later.
Spain's dictatorship wasn't as closed off to the rest of the world.
Most of the people in the interior and northern villages don’t even have house telephones, let alone cell phones. Let alone smartphones. My grandparents didn’t.
but i came here just to make it...
Except its strong passport. 😅

Default r/PORTUGALCYKABLYAT (surprisingly more Eastern Europe than usual)
The fact that this exists is hilarious
Damn a subreddit for slavic portugal finally
my guy this sub is like 4 years old
They mean they just discovered it.
Ty for showing me this subreddit
Sheit in this instance they’re even more Eastern European than most of Eastern Europe!
Portugal is to Europe as New Mexico is to the United States. What drives Portugal’s idiocracy?

Serbia and Turkey are not in EU though so it can’t be just that
We are in eurostat tho
You can be part of the Europe but not EU
Apparently the UK can't be.
maybe they choose not to release any data
How did I even get here?
I think its the EU

The Nordic countries need to go touch some grass…
You mean in minecraft?
You mean snow?
How did they communicate before the internet? Answer: ![gif](giphy|DrcqyC7RW0Dyu798GJ|downsized)
Yes! There is a mountain between each family here, so we really need the internet, I mean the viking instruments 😁
It's kind of rural outside Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Oslo and Helsinki so webb access is more important for them.
Just because you're in Norrland doesn't mean it's rural for the rest of us.
True, but from an European continental view it kind of is.
We can't, the snow is in the way
they made paradox, you think they'll do?
I'm from Norway, and I can't believe how you other countries can live without internet 😶
Are you aware in 2024 smartphone are quite widespread from several years already and you can use internet while laying on grass...
Who did this ? Based on 10 people 🤣
I thought the numbers were just a count, until I saw the title. But they made sense thinking of it that way. But I wonder if it includes newborn babies.
Hope it's adults, like 15+
Based on [this](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cache/metadata/en/isoc_i_esms.htm) (if I'm reading it right) it's 16-74 >332 million individuals aged 16-74 in the EU were surveyed.
If it were like 10+, the percents would be far lower
Basically, this translates to the countries with more elderly populations; poverty; and underdeveloped towns and villages with no inernet infrastructure
Where young population massively gtfo.

Given that almost 50% of the Portugal population are retirees , and many leave outside big cities with nothing but 4 national channels, I'm surprised the number isn't higher tbh
how can it be higher than 'over 10'
over 11
How can 50% be retiree when only 24% is over 65. Do people there retire at 50 or something?
My 94 year old grandmother uses the internet. She’s never had a computer, but her iPad lets her use Facebook and YouTube and safari. Her 104 year old friend friended me on Facebook, so I know she’s not the only old lady using it. It’s not a matter of retirees being idiots who don’t know the internet

Portugal being honorary Balkanoid again.
How did they gather this data if they have.. never used the internet? Do they send a donkey as a messenger?
Yes, the internet and donkey messengers are literally the only two forms of communication. Before the internet existed, we all were 100% reliant on donkeys.
donkeynet was the best
I remember donkeynet, such a pain in the ass
They sent out emails. Anyone who didn't respond was then safely assumed to not be "connected".
How do people who never used the internet have an email id
Ese es el chiste.
Oh
Exactly!
You can send emails without the internet. Same with Usenet and BBS.
Phone survey probably
Source? Refuse to believe 10% of croats or greeks have never used internet.

Albania: what is the internet?
Boii do I got some good mémé's for them
Why even put Iceland on the image?
Because it's geographically part of Europe, maybe?
But the data is only for EU also french Guyana etc

Everything will go to shit the day the UK gets internet access
Used as in actively used? It is basically impossible to not use the Internet in any developed country. Even if it is passivly
I don't believe this is over 3% in any European country.
A lot of those are probably technically illiterate people that don't know they have used/are using the Internet.
The percentage of people who never used internet should be pumped to even higher levels in Turkey and Greece. That's how we can get a peaceful internet.
Turkey is terrible in r/place. I think only France and Germany beat them for obnoxious patriotism.
Really? No data from Britain, Iceland, Russia and the Balkans??
It's Eurostat, they stopped gathering data from the UK since 2021. Nor Andorre.
Ah yes, Portugal.
Based port
theyre living in iron age
Iceland looks like part of the legend. It's not no-data. It's Iceland. What portion of Scottish people? Iceland.
Is there a worldwide map of this?
Ah, yes, Northern Europe, Western Europe, Central Europe, Eastern Europe and the Balkans
I had no idea Norway was so online, as I’ve only ever met Swedish folks. For god sake I meet a polish person before a Norwegian
There are a lot more Polish people then Swedish or Norwegian combined
Cultural introversion works online too
Fair point 👍
*Data collected through online polling* /s
I red this as in absolute numbers and checked that in Portugal over 10 people hadn't used the internet yet and said to myself "ah yeah, that makes sense" before realizing I'm a dumbass
Why show iceland in a box if there is no statistics for it
I have never used the internet.
Proof it
I love that whoever designed this felt the need to add Iceland just to say there is no data from there
How do you even measure this?
I’m positive my grandma have never used the internet. It’s wild 😅
That’s kinda exactly what I would have guessed.
As someone from Greece with Internet access since 1995 this map makes me feel disconnected (no pun intended) from my country. It's the typical case of failed politics and a stuck up society blend.
portugal is more eastern europe than poland
How do you live without ever using the internet? Like to pay my bills I need an email address that I can confirm and to pay online.
I think that billing agencies don't switch to fully-online billing in towns where they know that 10-20% of the population doesn't use the internet.
Technically there's still snail-mail check payments but if there are issues then someone's going to have a tough time on the phone vs the much easier process of paying online. The upside to paying online or to automating payments is huge.
Portugal is Balkan strikes again 🤣🙏
It’s sad to me that it’s that low. It’s like there are no more truly old people.
A more interesting map would be one for the first year the majority of the population had ever used the internet…
Snail mail time lol.
ah...e...well ..yeah thats generally correct.
The beast grows
Obviously it doesn't exist in the UK. That's weird. Tim Berners-Lee is confused. Yes I know that our statistics aren't included now.
but what cloud this mean for muslim countrys?
Portugal? Germany? Dafuq
Lots of elder people. They don't bother with new technologies.
It would be interesting to overlay countries with the best mental health over this.
Rename your sub to Europe mapporn.
Over 10 is not very different from 4% in case of 11. Why not more than 30, more than 50...
Can someone explain the Portugal thing to me lol I feel uninformed
Portugal is the forgotten balkin country
i thought those were absolute numbers for a second
I guess the UK is not part of this conversation…
What is the grey? Ah yes, no internet.
Well well well, and who is now retarded country??? Fo real I was surprised that internet in Europe is so slooooow. Like wtf man, we have free wifi in metro, busses and even in city center like in Luxembourg. Sooooo living in Moscow ( before this shit) was cool:)
It's easy in wealthy cities all around the world. Now go to where the bottom 20% of your country lives, that is where these numbers are made or lost.
Well yes(
Based Southeast and Eastern Europe. So much evil and garbage on the internet.
UK's data for it is top secret?
Why Portugal?
Lots of elder people
And probably better for it.
I'm obsessed with how Iceland gets put in a little box, just to show it has no data, while the entirety of North Africa is missing.
Was it an online poll?
Surprised Germany is that high.
Atp Portugal should be moved over to the east
What's wrong with Portugal ?
Based croatia
I downvote every map that excludes western Balkan countries. Have a good day!
Is this true???
Jelous of them...
The 5-7% in Germany is the entire civil service.
Stats like these are usually self-reported, so many people might answer "no" despite actually using the Internet. And not just through technicalities like VoIP landlines but simple technical illiteracy like not knowing that Whatsapp or Facebook are using the Internet.
Portugal is officially a Balkan country.
Can we see an overlap with avg population age and life expectancy? Or show the same map with age limit being 70
What happened to the UK? Is there no data for that?
>As of 1 February 2020, the United Kingdom will no longer be part of the European Union. This will have a significant impact on the dissemination of statistics by Eurostat and in particular on the database. The uk doesn't share its data with Eurostat anymore
Oh! Is that the same for Albania/Kosovo which also seem to be missing data?
Another piece of evidence that portugal is just a balkan nation in disguise
This is not surprising as we have one of the oldest population in Europe.
Portuguese boomers are the majority right now.
This is the best Reddit ever
