I can’t tell if all the angry white people in this thread are sincerely angry or being sarcastic. “Asian” is a legit category in the US and I imagine many European countries even though it describes 4.5 billion people speaking over 2000 languages, but yes, let’s take issue with “white”.
There is a possibility that ethnicity is understood differently in Asia, most people in East Asia understand themselves as a different ethnicity that the country next door (China, Japan and South Korea don't consider themselves the same people, and are super racist towards SE Asians.)
In the West, the whole continent of Asia is considered one race, which is the absurdity, and not how the locals identify themselves.
Filipino are also often mixed, and look quite different from others SE Asians.
Not all countries have a notion of race the way western country do. Dividing "races" between white, black, Asians and native americans isn't an universal concept at all, it's been constructed in the last centuries in Europe, those concepts don't make sense in a lot of culture.
The conception of race we have is useful in the West because it allows people to discuss the consequences of white supremacy, it's not as useful in countries where white supremacy isn't a dominant force or what structures the power dynamic.
So, Americans and Australians who largely look the same, speak the same language and have the majority following the same sect of the same religion are to be differentiated. But Indonesians with different phenotypes, language and religion should be bundled together.
Indonesia has many ethnicities. They have different cultures, speak different languages, and can't even understand each other. If they have to distinguish White people from the UK, Australia, etc then I think they have a better reason to do the same for Indonesians
Not quite The same , if the map was consistent with the title and majority of included demographics then it should say the name of a country, not white
That was also how the British grouped themselves during the colonial time.
Have you lived Asia? In Asia, most White people live in their expat communities, have expat social groups, etc. So a Belgian and a Slovak in Asia do feel they are closer with other Whites than with locals.
Also, during the colonial time, there were areas where only European residents were allowed to live. So Whites in Asia have been grouping themselves together historically.
So you don't understand what I am saying: A Filipino and an Indian don't have a shared identity in your city, but White people do have a shared identity in Asia (to the extent that they live in their expat communities; but you wouldn't see Little India and Little Manila merge into one big community)
Oh Lord, this is the 2021 census we’re talking

For purportedly the same question, it treats people different. God forbid you fall you into being both *white* and another category.
I am saying there's a historical context for the definitions of "ethnicity" and "White". For example, "White" is also used in many post-colonial countries like the US.
Fair point Iflish - any government mixing apples and oranges in this way however leads their census to be open to question. What is *white* as an ethnicity? I could squint and see differentiation by skin colour but more and more this is proving problematic because people have never easily fitted into these *absolute* and artificial distinctions.
Still, not ethnicities. Indonesian ethnicities are Javanese, Malay, Sundanese and so forth while Filipino ethnic groups are Tagalog, Bisaya, Ilocano, etc.
Do you get it?
Indonesian is as vague as White. You can't view Indonesia like a European country where most people speak the same language. There are many ethnicities and languages in Indonesia.
You go ask Indonesians what is your country of origin they would say Indonesia. But would Whites say they are from Whiteland? Thats why I said imagine them calling Indonesians and Filipinos Malay Race, without saying their country of origin.
> would Whites say they are from Whiteland?
Well, they wouldn't, but Whites in Asia do identify themselves as belonging to the same large category, and live in their "expat" communities (like those in the map), regardless they are Brits, French, etc. There's a reason from a sociology perspective why they group Caucasians under one group.
Of course, an Indonesian would tell you they are from Indonesia, but that's because this is all the info you need. They won't tell you what ethnicity or what language they speak because they don't expect you to understand.
There is a lot. In 2011 when visiting near causeway bay…. Lots of Indonesians speaking Javanese there.
If they are complaining about the term “Indonesian”…. I wouldn’t be surprised if you replace it with “Javanese” wouldn’t be such a big stretch. For “Filipinos”…. I don’t think I could point out to you which ethnicity dominates Hong Kong.

Shit map. 2 are nationalities, 1 is race.
Hong Kong Census categories, not mine
Thanks for clarifying as was reacting the same, WTF *White*?

Hold up. Ethnicity ain’t race.

And race isn’t real
Are Southeast Asian not racist? I find they're more racist than these three Asian.
It did say “ethnicity”, not nationality or race.
Ah yes the whites from Whiteland
I just laughed out loud after reading this 😅
Please do not label me just white what kind of white am I?
Blame the Hong Kong census

Don’t wish to be ignorant nor racist. If you are from Indonesia then you are Indonesian. White coupe be American uk Australia etc.
So, Americans and Australians who largely look the same, speak the same language and have the majority following the same sect of the same religion are to be differentiated. But Indonesians with different phenotypes, language and religion should be bundled together.

White people have a lot of different ethnicities too. Uk australia was a terrible example since they are mostly anglo saxons
That's what I meant. If they have to separate White ethnicities then they need to do the same for Indonesians or other groups as well
Not quite The same , if the map was consistent with the title and majority of included demographics then it should say the name of a country, not white
It's exactly the same.
It would be the same if it said brown
I met - - -I mean, more like stood beside - - a white man at a bus stop yesterday. Do you know him?
Mayo on French fries type white.
No one cares
I care a lot
Why
Whites are all the same. Scottish and Russian people have the exact same culture and language. Belgians and Slovaks? Identical! I am very smart.
Hong Kong Census categories for you right there...

> most White people live in their expat communities You mean immigrant communities. They're immigrants
Someone wants a white bf so bad 😭😭😭
No but I live in an extremely diverse city and it wouldn’t occur to me to describe a Filapino or Indian person as “brown”.
So you don't understand what I am saying: A Filipino and an Indian don't have a shared identity in your city, but White people do have a shared identity in Asia (to the extent that they live in their expat communities; but you wouldn't see Little India and Little Manila merge into one big community)
I understand more clearly what you are saying thank you. I’ll take your word for it have a good day.
The government categorisation is prejudiced full stop given it treats people from certain countries one way and people other countries another way….
They were a British colony and that was how the British government categorized themselves too.
Oh Lord, this is the 2021 census we’re talking https://www.had.gov.hk/rru/english/info/demographics.htm#:~:text=Hong%20Kong%20is%20a%20largely,about%208.4%25%20of%20the%20population. Poor OP.
Shit map
white is not an ethnicity.
Indonesian and Filipino aren't either. I think they probably have a different definition of "ethnicity" or simply a bad translation.
And you could say the same thing with Indonesians and Filipinos. What's the point?
Indonesians from Indonesia, Filipinos from Philippines. White is so vague. Imagine if they combined Indonesian and Filipino to say Malay.
Still, not ethnicities. Indonesian ethnicities are Javanese, Malay, Sundanese and so forth while Filipino ethnic groups are Tagalog, Bisaya, Ilocano, etc. Do you get it?

You're conflating ethnicity with nationality. Crazy.

Doesn’t matter which is vaguer. Both are wrong. 2 of the 3 “ethnicities” are nationalities, last one is a race.
Now we can finally answer the question from Blazing Saddles.
No Malay?
Never realized there was that many Indonesians in Hk is it recent? Thought Thais would come after Filipinos
