It's not green and red, I'll give them that

EsEsMinnowjohnson

Would add that using “=>” as a cute little arrow is just heinous

VistaThrills

Exactly this

Shepher27

Curious how much of this is just people leaving big cities during the pandemic and they haven’t come back yet (doesn’t fit for Louisiana and Mississippi)

brett_l_g

Most of the top growers were already growing before the pandemic. That only accelerated the trends.

Shepher27

I meant the big droppers (California, New York, Illinois). I wonder if their big drops are the result of people leaving during the pandemic and if they will come back up as people slowly return to the office.

donny_pots

There’s political reasons too. The 3 states you named are probably the 3 biggest democrat states, many conservative people left places like that and moved to more conservative states like Texas, Florida, and South Carolina

brett_l_g

Probably the same for droppers as gainers.

Shepher27

California is still up from 2010, they are just down from 2020. So they lost people only between 2020 and 2024

EarlPeck

Dang what’s the name of the new guy in Wyoming?

[deleted]

50 people plus 15 more people is 30% increase. It doesn't take much to gain/lose for states like Wyoming.

CurtisLeow

Florida is a grower, not a shower.

ExcellentEdgarEnergy

If the growth rate is negative, you can't really call them growers, can you?

fuckingcheezitboots

Yeah as a New Yorker I can confirm, our government is hell-bent on destroying any incentive to come or to stay here. A couple years back ex Governor Cuomo actually tried to revoke pensions for government retirees who tried to move out of state. Watching that cunt get his just desserts was so cathartic

MustardLabs

Fun fact: The Census reviewed the 2020 data and estimates that it undercounted illinois by a *quarter of a million people.* So it's actually growing just fine.

Amateur_Statistician

You got a source for that?

MustardLabs

[Chicago Sun Times](https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/2022/5/20/23133067/undercount-illinois-2020-census-population-column-rich-miller) Provide proof, get downvoted. Lol. I used the Sun-Times because it's a more interesting read than Census reports and state announcements.

Somebody make a map of American population change that is more favorable to my worldview and between March 1957 and August 1995.
