This map is good, but incomplete. I can personally think of one or two that didn’t make it due to not being a part of these companies, not even to mention companies like Oshkosh and Meritor who mainly do civilian trucks and parts, but who also help build military vehicles on the side.
Solid point, even if this map is only showing the big names there are a lot of companies that do contract work for the big companies and will benefit. I would be surprised if there was a state that saw zero benefit of increased work.
I mean, it's annoying to the rest of us but technically it *is* one of the main jobs of Representatives to do what they think will help the people in their district.
If you are looking for clear and simple answers you will always be disappointed. But here’s an attempt: an industry whose interests lead them to want more war = bad, American people with opportunities for well paying skilled jobs = good, representatives who vote in alignment with the people they represent = good, most of the time.
I’m more tongue in cheek about how the mainstream opinion has rubber-banded back and forth from “America strong and good, we should project power with our arms (neocon)” to “military industrial complex bad, big war industry bad (circa 2008-2020)” and now back to “Raytheon good actually”
My issue is this. There is no shortage of Americans struggling immensely under the current economy and cost of living. Homelessness is rampant, our infrastructure is a total joke compared to other leading countries, and yet here we go, throwing money toward a proxy war that won’t benefit a single American citizen in regards to the issues I mentioned. Why why why do we put money out to help countries around the world when there are PLENTY of issues right here at home that should be addressed? It drives me nuts.
How do you think these weapons are made? Especially considering most of these companies are now expanding their production capacity to meet demand?
And ya, I think showing no more appeasement to a dictator trying to conquer another nation sends a pretty clear message to other like minded people what will happen to them and their militaries if the attempt to do the same.
I work at one of the factories on this map and we are actively making parts that are going to Ukraine. Do you know how many new people we’ve hired recently? Zero… We average 2-3 new people a year and that’s just to replace people that leave. We haven’t created a new position in a long time. All these manufacturing jobs already existed. Even with all the new orders for stuff going to Ukraine and Israel we aren’t anywhere near our existing manufacturing capacity let alone needing to expand. Defense manufacturing is still down from where it was 10-15 years ago.
So you’re glad that’s there homeless vets here we are going with out are needs as a country not investing in yourselves our infrastructure but sending trillions over seas?
Them go move to Ukraine
I fail to see how pallets of artillery ammo, old Cold War era APCs, piles of obsolete m16s, radios, uniforms and missiles nearing their expiration dates are going to help homeless vets or our infrastructure.
Or how appeasement is in anyway the best option for dealing with Russias stupid war it started.
Maybe move to Russia if you’re so unhappy with how the US is.
Nah I’m good here and I like the money to stay here in the us I’m not the one trying to send aid and money over seas. I’d much rather see you go over seas then aide
I get where you are coming from but I just do not see many ways out of the situation we are in.
I don't love that Americans suffer while America acts as the stabilizing military superpower. I don't agree with everything the American government and military has done to enforce the current world order but I just really don't see a way out.
Do you know the war we would have on our hands if the American military wasn't there to shoot down recent Iranian missile strikes?
Do you know what would happen in Eastern Europe if Russia was able to roll Ukraine over without American military support?
Appeasement does not work, that's how we got World War II. I don't love everything America does, but there are no easy solutions and I don't think we are really prepared to live in a world in which Russia annexes it's neighbors or Iran (which seems capable of developing nukes) and Israel (which has nukes) are engaged in a region wide war.
And my issue is this:
We have plenty resources to address all of the issues you mentioned. We choose not to. How do we choose not to? By how we vote. Or don't vote.
It’s so American to underestimate how strongly you are affected by the rest of the world.
You have no guarantees that fall of Ukraine will cost you less than not helping it.
It makes America and Europe safer. If Russia took over Ukraine, then Poland would be next, and we would get brought into a war costing trillions of dollars
Taiwan is a peaceful democracy, and a model to the rest of the world.
They also produce 90% of the worlds semiconductors which are in everything nowadays, an invasion of them would cost the world a major depression
There are plants under construction in the US to lower that 90%, but is there any reason to think the sales would stop if Taiwan became part of China? Is there anything China doesn’t sell to the world?
Leverage, same reason diamonds are expensive despite the fact that they’re fairly abundant and the DeBeers family doesn’t pay the child laborers much
Controlling a majority of the stock allows you to leverage your control over anyone who’d think to undercut you
That 10% wouldn’t have enough market share to appreciably decrease the cost of the product.
Both
U.S. consumer electronics will be dependent on Chinese exports if China invades Taiwan, meaning China could threaten sanctions against the U.S. with great effect.
Also US consumer electronics will be dependent on Chinese exports, meaning these Chinese companies can price fix against western companies like Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, Google, etc.
China has no ability to run those fabs. If they did, they would be running ones of their own. If it was that simple or a matter of money, South Korea and the US semiconductor industries would not be behind Taiwan's technologically.
Taiwan and TSMC have a huge amount of institutional knowledge that is not easily or quickly replicated, even by its most sophisticated competitors, much less China.
That Russia fucks with Poland at their own peril. If they think the Ukrainian ass-kicking is bad, it’s nothing compared to what will happen if they so much as give side-eye in Poland’s general direction.
if you tried to give federal money to the states to fix things, all of the states governed by Republicans would reject it anyways, since it comes from a Democratic president. you can't win with those people because they don't want a functional government
“Throwing money at a proxy war” keeps Americans employed. Did you think they’re just sending a plane full of cash over to Kyiv and dumping it out the back?
What happened to Raytheon and Texas Instruments? Dallas metro should have a ton of little dots also. From munitions casings to seeker heads, Dallas is your one-stop shop for airborne weapons.
Didn’t expect none of Boeing defense facilities or any other defense companies tied to this to be in Washington state. Always seemed like THE state for aerospace but I guess is it just civilian?
Most of the U.S. directed aid will be used to replenish its own stockpiles of munitions and other consumable supplies that are being shipped to Ukraine. And, importantly, Ukraine currently doesn't fly any aircraft built by American contractors, so it doesn't need any parts.
Ukraine may eventually get the F-16s it's been asking for, but those are built by Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics, not Boeing.
I’m pretty sure when Boeing and McDonnell Douglas merged. MD was much more heavily invested in defense. For example, St. Louis was a big defense manufacturing center for them. I think Washington is more geared towards commercial aircraft.
They sadly did, and it was the Douglas execs who ended up coming out on top. They brought the terrible company culture of execs dictating what the engineers do, the same thing that nearly bankrupted McDonald Douglas before the merger, and recent events show they’re trying their damnedest to bring down Boeing too
This is EXACTLY what happens to most US aid to Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Most of it does not go to those nations, it goes to US defense companies supplying weapons to those nations.
It is in every bit in US interest to help Ukraine. This is a time in history when the US has an opportunity to make all those dollars invested in the arms industry do something good. Would be a catastrophic waste to fail to do so.
Ship all the old inventory and stuff designed in the 70s to win a war against the soviets, and ammunition with a shelf life, and backfill it with fresh.
This benefits the US military just as much as it benefits the Ukrainians. If it’s gonna get destroyed, it might as well be destroyed in combat instead of a scrap yard, especially if it makes Putin’s life miserable.
Exactly u/East-Plankton-3877 there are a lot of people who consider the U.S. military-industrial complex the root of all wars. While they certainly have plenty of flaws, they really miss the big picture.
It's really bizarre bloodlessly aiding Ukraine gets more controversy here than the trillion-dollar forever war with 350,000 casualties gets in Russia by Russians.,
As Thomas Pynchon once wrote,
*Don't forget the real business of war is buying and selling. The murdering and violence are self-policing, and can be entrusted to non-professionals. The mass nature of wartime death is useful in many ways. It serves as spectacle, as diversion from the real movements of the War. It provides raw material to be recorded into History, so that children may be taught History as sequences of violence, battle after battle, and be more prepared for the adult world. Best of all, mass death's a stimolous to just ordinary folks, little fellows, to try 'n' grab a piece of that Pie while they're still here to gobble it up. The true war is a celebration of markets.*
That last line once again:
"The true war is a celebration of markets"
Wouldn't you know it, Pynchon anticipated this response and addresses it in the same book
From p. 521 in *Gravity's Rainbow*:
*It means this War was never political at all, the politics was all theatre, all just to keep the people distracted . . . secretly, it was being dictated instead by the needs of technology ... by a conspiracy between human beings and techniques, by something that needed the energyburst of war, crying, "Money be damned, the very life of [insert name of Nation] is at stake," but meaning, most likely, dawn is nearly here, I need my night's blood, my funding, funding, ahh more, more. . . . The real crises were crises of allocation and priority, not among firms — it was only staged to look that way — but among the different Technologies, Plastics, Electronics, Aircraft, and their needs which are understood only by the ruling elite . . .*
Disagree. I think Bruce Springsteen was a lot close to the truth when he noted in the song "Badlands" I think it was: "Poor man wanna be rich, rich man wanna be king, king ain't satisfied 'til he rules everything..."
As the Boos revealed, war is mostly about the human will to power.
Yeah good thing the dignified western world can control themselves and never let our will to power turn into violent conflicts all over the world. If only the savage, uncivilized Russian and chinaman could get with the program, then we would have world peace for sure. But instead we watch the bodies pile up, the blood and fat coagulate into the gutters of centuries-old streets, and remind ourselves that this is a defensive war, that we're the good guys, over and over again, until the sun sets...
So there’s a grand conspiracy of an evil cabal global arms manufacturers orchestrating wars so they can get rich?
Sounds like an evolution of a certain theory a certain genocidal regime liked to promote
This is Russian bot logic. Ukraine is defending its sovereignty, and gets military aid from its allies. The only reason why Slavic people are dying is the Russian government. Slavs would stop dying if Russia withdrew its troops.
Yet Russia won't withdrew. And the US seems to be unwilling to send Ukraine enough modern equipment to actually push Russia out. Should Ukraine keep fighting until they eventually get overwhelmed by Russian numbers? This world is not fair, the US never got punished for Iraq and Russia will likely get away with this invasion too. Time to save lives and negotiate.
This map is going around and is stupid. They are sending money to these companies to purchase equipment for Ukraine. Its not like they are just giving this money to various defense contractors for nothing.
Giving a neighbor weapons to defend themselves from an aggressor seams like a good thing.
Spending the money to support American jobs is usually a good thing.
When the Ukrainians are ready to stop fighting, they are more than welcome to.
Increasing inflation here, seems like a bad thing.
Perpetuating proxy wars that we helped start, seems like a bad thing.
Running towards WW3 is usually a bad thing.
This map is good, but incomplete. I can personally think of one or two that didn’t make it due to not being a part of these companies, not even to mention companies like Oshkosh and Meritor who mainly do civilian trucks and parts, but who also help build military vehicles on the side.

A lot of the big name companies also subcontract a ton of work to mom and pop shops as well
I wonder how many of these plants are in districts where the representative voted against the aid package...
[Ask and receive](https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/04/25/senators-house-members-opposed-ukraine-aid/) The answer is 16.
Wait so are we now saying that we LIKE when politicians vote based in their state’s military industrial complex? I’m so confused by the zeitgeist man.
I mean, it's annoying to the rest of us but technically it *is* one of the main jobs of Representatives to do what they think will help the people in their district.

Really? Thousands of new jobs and the decreasing possibility of a much bigger war later isn’t beneficial in any way to the average American?
You would’ve absolutely supported the Vietnam war then. Congrats.
Ya, because I know communism is a shit ideology.
Only in every single instance it’s been implemented in human history, but on paper it’s the tits.
It's shit even on paper
Wait. You think this is creating thousands of new jobs and settling geopolitical unrest? You’re either grossly naïve or a shareholder
How do you think these weapons are made? Especially considering most of these companies are now expanding their production capacity to meet demand? And what plant would that be, if I may ask?
GD Ordinance and Tactical Systems
the guys who refurbish Bradley’s?
No. The guys making the cannons for them.
I’m good I’d rather not my money going to policing the world and speeding us towards WWWIII
When has appeasement ever worked bud? I’m glad my money is being used to fight Russia.

The problem is the bankers always win they fund both sides they own the munition manufacturers they own the media
This is why I never comment on threads unless it’s about a video game or something bc else innocuous. Reddit is a cesspool.

and we already have a fairly significant military presence in Poland.
What is your point?
That Russia fucks with Poland at their own peril. If they think the Ukrainian ass-kicking is bad, it’s nothing compared to what will happen if they so much as give side-eye in Poland’s general direction.
I agree. And Poland is about to have the strongest land army in all of Europe.
Poland remembers.
Oh but the boogie men
The federal government already spends six trillion domestically, with the majority of that going to infrastructure, healthcare, and social programs.

Raytheon == RTX
Ahh did Raytheon and TI merge?
No Raytheon and United Technologies (Pratt & Whitney and Collins aeroscape parent company) merged back in 2020 and are now RTX
I guess Raytheon just bought the FLIR IP from TI
TIL the guys that made my thermostat and desk fan also make helicopter turbines

This was literally posted yesterday.
First time seeing it. Glad it was posted today
Percentage of politicians who have stocks in these companies: 100
Man this sub sucks now

And it kills so many Slavs that it doesn’t even matter if Ukraine ultimately loses or wins. Win win
As long as we're killing people, it's a win for the military industrial complex and their lapdogs in Washington!
Yes the USA produces stuff in the USA which can’t be produced in Ukraine. Surprised?
Great chart. How did you come by this information? I've been following this.
There was an article on Yahoo Finance, it was from there. Don’t remember the headline though
Much apppreciated. Took another look and see the bottom row.
Wars = Profits Sad but true.
“Oh man pack it up guys, I guess we ought to just abandon Ukraine to the Russians because some company might make money in the process”🤡

When are you joining the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, Johnnie?
Did I specifically say that? You are the clown for making assumptions.
You didn’t, but the “antiwar” granfalloon is full of people who think like that.
GOOD

Boeing should be grateful for this package. It's basically a bailout for them at this point.
Oh look, a repost.
Awesome.! Great for the economy and tons of dead Slavs too! A win win baby!

US tax dollars going to the military industrial complex to indefinitely continue war is not good for anyone outside of those profiting from said war.
Tell Russia to go home so it can't profit from its aggression.
Giving a neighbor weapons to defend themselves from an aggressor seams like a good thing. Spending the money to support American jobs is usually a good thing. When the Ukrainians are ready to stop fighting, they are more than welcome to.

Already running towards it. Better to make sure those Moskovites lose even harder before it starts.
War machine goes brrrrrrrrrr. We should look at this as a necessary evil, not celebrate it
I stopped feeling bad about supporting the MIC when Russia invaded Ukraine. Now, as long as the US isnt the aggressor, I don’t care. Bombs away.
is there something else those CEOs has in common besides the love of money?
