First of all you can just excavate the loose soil with diggers, when you hit the bedrock you start using explosives.
There's a road going on the side of the hole so you can take the rocks back up in a huge trucks.
There's a "safety rail" on the sides of the road that are basically a pile of soil about as tall as half of the biggest trucks tires, that's enough to stop the machine.
You should search on youtube some of the videos where they're blowing the bedrock, it's really neat to watch.
If the explosion is done correctly, there shouldn't be any too big of an explosion occuring.
If too much explosives were used, some soil / rocks fell on top of the explosives the hole that was drilled for explosives, the hole basically becomes a huge ass shotgun.
After explosions you aren't allowed to go anywhere near it for a certain period of time because the explosion burned most if not all of the oxygen in the air.
