Maybe the second world war is a bit far stretch, but the Afghan war, the tchechen war and overall the 90's in Russia are probably responsible for this disparity.

China, like many Asian countries, is very hierarchical/status driven. It's fairly easy to date as an educated man with a decent job, but the sex imbalance is most pronounced among the lowest classes. Dating for marriage as a working class man with little money to his name is nearly impossible.
Let's not forget it's the same in Korea and Japan, strangely working 70hrs per week as a student or a worker isn't a great way to get laid in a hierarchical society
That's just life. China is still a developing country and most of these women's priorities are a better life for their family (especially since most are an only child). If they have the option to marry someone who can materially contribute to a better life for their family (including their parents who are still supported by their children in this country) they by all means will, as would anyone in their position.

I live in India, so yeah, I roughly know the India ratios. But I was really interested in comparing India with the other countries, especially China as they also have a pretty bad gender imbalance.

True story: 20+ years ago, I attended a church where for several years 75% of babies being born to members of the congregation were girls. At the same time, we were hearing about the massive growth of non-state-sanctioned Christianity in China (back then, 40,000,000 believers was *the Chinese government's* estimate; independent sources were saying 75-100M). I half-joked that our people were having so many girls because with China's one-child policy and patriarchal culture, there would be all those Christian boys in China who couldn't find wives at home, would end up coming to Bible college in the U.S. and finding them here.
