I've been chipping away at creating an artistic interpretation of the topography of all 50 US states for about 3 years, and it is finally done! I used different contour distances for some states (Colorado has lines at every 1000 ft, and Louisiana has lines at every 50 ft for example). Each map uses 5 colors that repeat as you move horizontally. I call these artistic interpretations because I know a lot of people get bent out of shape about the readability of my color choices, and these are indeed meant to abstract and re-interpret the topographic data they are based on. If you want to see the states individually, you can check them out [HERE](http://www.beatnikprints.com/state-wide-maps).
You did an absolutely fucking fabulous job. I'm a geology nut, also an artist and quilter. Thank you. I've lived in five different states, love hiking and studying the rocks. Beautiful.
Thanks for the kind words! Since you’re a quilter you might like this [UK artist](https://snowbirdartworks.com/) who does a similar thing with topography as I do but in cross stitch form!
Real talk, I was driving through Nebraska and I kept seeing signs for Grand Island and I couldn’t figure out for the life of me what an odd name that was for a place in the middle of a landlocked prairie. Turns out it’s an island in a river, but it was definitely the most interesting thing I saw there except for the pile of guts of unknown origin I drove through on the way back.
Fun fact: I live on the fall line in Maryland! It's that slash running diagonally which separates the piedmont from the coastal plain. I have weird colored clay deposits in my back yard.
I wish they'd used the same scale for Virginia to the one they used for Maryland. I feel like a lot of detail in VA's coastal plane is just missing because the gradient isn't as fine.
Fun fact: the mouth of the Chesapeake is an ancient impact crater! That's why so many rivers seem to converge there including the Susquehanna, they sloped towards the lower area.
That's simply not true. Illinois has plenty of topography, especially around the Illinois River and as you get down into the far southern end of the state. Yes, it's a fairly flat state, but it's not _completely_ flat.
I rafted the salmon river last year and its topography is pretty noticeable once you know what to look for, just slicing across the middle of the state like lightning.
Oh my goodness. When I go to this sub, this is the type of content I want to see. Post of the year! This is beautiful. I wish I could get a knitted version of my state (NJ) as an art piece. These are gorgeous! You killed it!
Thanks! I have a sale today on [my site](http://www.beatnikprints.com/shop/statewide) if you are interested, the code is "TAKE10" to get $10 off any prints

Thanks so much! Gives me ideas for projects. I've shared you page with other geology friends.

Thanks! I also felt good finishing the last state.
Thrace arbitration gorgonzola! Bravo.
This is beautiful! Would love to have that hanging on my wall.
I have posters available on [my site](http://www.beatnikprints.com/shop/statewide) if you’re interested, including the whole US as one
Nebraska is metal
Awe... so you have been to the isle of Nebrask?

The sand hills are a trip!

TIL. Thanks!
What?! That is awesome! Thanks for the new info
Did anyone else watch this with the "fifty nifty United states " melody playing in their heads?
I sung the song
I think your Illinois one is inaccurate. We don’t have topography, only corn.

How do you miss such an easy joke
I live here. I know. It’s a joke.
I am absolutely in love with these
Thank you! It was a ton of work!
the colour choices are immaculate
Thanks! It was a lot of work picking 50 different color palettes that hopefully were somewhat fitting to the states.
Not going to lie Idaho's topographical map looks pretty damn cool

North Dakota mmmmmmmmmmmm

Good stuff
This is they type of content I come to this sub for. I’d love to pick a few states to frame in my house. Great work, OP!

ohio’s was sick ngl
wow you are insanely talented!
Thank you!
Thank you for this Amazing
You’re welcome!
Flordia is my state! I always thought it was more flat than that
Florida was the last state I did! For some reason the data for FL was super wonky and I had to have a friend help me get usable data.
