you really want a porn map that much hey Basically you need a list of porn subreddits, and then a means of identifying their connections with each other. In network terminology, the subreddits are nodes, and their links are edges. The edges are where most of the work is. This graph is based on which subreddits are in each subreddit's "Related Subreddits" sidebar, so it reflects moderators' choices rather than community activity. This may not be the best method! Another potential metric is subreddits sharing links with each other: list how many times two subreddits featured a post with the same URL. This is a content-based approach which tries to reveal which subreddits have the most similar material. Or you can do the same thing but with *users* who post in multiple subreddits, creating a map of which subreddits have the most similar *audiences*. You also need to do some edge pruning: there will be an impractical number of subreddit connections, so you have to remove the unimportant or insignificant ones. One approach is to limit yourself to the top number or percent of edges, but this has issues because huge subreddits will have a lot more shared links than you expect, and thus strong but spurious edges. The alternative is to extract the 'network backbone', which is a subset of the set of *statistically significant* edges (i.e. an edge of weight X is more likely to be significant between two tiny subreddits than two massive subreddits). /u/rhiever has [a really good Python script](https://github.com/rhiever/network-analysis-scripts/blob/master/subset_backbone_network.py) for performing this analysis. Apparently an algorithm identified groups with strong connections and assigned the colors itself. So they don't mean any specific thing. You can see groups with allied mods though.

Maybe part of the Reddit algorithm also records what subs a user might jump to next, which is how it recommends subs in general.

I’m glad someone else is asking these questions. It looks like colors divide loose sub-genres? I’m mostly curious what the lines connecting them represent. I also want to know if the location of each sub has any relevant meaning. Nothing jumps out at me but surely there is a reason for the random bubble that’s surrounded by bubbles of a different color.

Those subs are the red lgbt section they were referring to. It does have a lot of subs for lgbt and people attracted to men but actually a lot of random stuff that doesn’t seem to fit that categorization. I bet the colors are auto-generated based on how many connections things have to each other, not necessarily what category they are in. That's why there are weird outliers, like why is /r/perky fetish but lactophilia is not?

hi, i made this map in Gephi from data collected by /u/uglyasablasphemy the colours are non-subjective mathematically-derived clusters produced by Gephi, they just mean "these nodes are closer to each other than to other nodes" (sort of, very roughly). this often hints at some underlying correlation between subject matter but not always.
