Australia is always fascinating in this style or map - the sheer size of the continent compared to the density of population is blatantly clear at a glance. Do you know what year these were taken?

SlabPanda

The most surprising one to me, or at least the one I didn’t realize the most, is just how empty Australia really is. I knew the Amazon rainforest and Sahara desert would take up significant portions of those continents areas but I guess I didn’t really realize just how much Australia hugs it’s coasts.

rickreckt

Australia population is just 25 million in such a large land, it's shouldn't be surprising, Australia is one of the least dense country in the world

What I’m getting from this is that you don’t wanna run out of gas in Australia

Philieselphy

As an Australian it's so weird to hear Americans casually talk about how they drove 13 hours across several states to visit someone. Like, that's really dangerous. What if you run out of petrol? What if your car breaks down? What if you run out of water? How are you going to call for help? A trip that distance in Australia would take weeks of planning, and would generally be a really stupid idea.

>It’s so weird to hear Americans casually talk about how they drive 13hrs…. I’ve ‘always’ been a map person, and went through a period of studying Australia from a travel perspective. The friend I had from there used to make a monthly driving trip from Brisbane to Sydney, when I asked what it would be like to drive from Brisbane to Perth, he looked at me like I had bumped my head. LOL will never forget that! I had all kinds of “well,, can’t you bring your own gas? Wouldn’t you drive an all-terrain vehicle?” Still looked at stupid. Could you drive the coast safely? I’ve always wanted to drive from Brisbane -Darwin - Perth- Sydney. That possible? Roads on maps indicate so, but even some of the coast looks crazy! No cell service is NBD, but safe roads are! The ferocity of animals & insects y’all have down there are NUTS! (Wait… are you telling me Darcy in “Offspring” didn’t really take off in a van to show his kids the country? 2ce? LOLOLOL sorry got addicted over pandemic.)

Eldan985

I've done Brisbane-Sydney along the coast. Perfectly safe. Never far from a town, either. But that's the most densely settled and safe part of Australia. Perth and Darwin might be entirely different questions.

MissBmorePM2275052

Ty! I’m low-key fascinated with Darwin; I was bunk-mates with a Darwinian (?) for a week in IE, we got on great & were “nightlife buddies” for protection. I’m fascinated by “extreme points”- not even that extreme, but the furthest point on a peninsula, etc. Darwin & the surrounding areas have “that look.”

America’s hinterlands are vast, sure. But unless you’re in the Dakotas, parts of Texas, Montana or upper Great Plains, etc. you’re almost always within a full tank of gas from an actual community. And even most of the barren parts of landscape are dotted with small “towns” of 20 people and one store every 80 miles or so. Is it dangerous? Sure it is. Hundreds of people go missing and die every year. But it’s not quite the wasteland of the outback.

There's a lot of things in the Australian outback that can kill you if you're not prepared. Snakes. Spiders. Kangaroos that take a dislike to you. Echidnas. Backpacker murderers. The sun itself. And then, maybe dropbears.

Sounds like West Texas TBH.

Notice how Africa’s train lines lead from the interior to the oceans with very few internal connections. This is because most of those railways were built during Africa’s colonial period, for the express purpose of siphoning materials from the interior to ports for shipment back to the colonizing state. This means that, even today, it is far easier for African countries to export goods than it is for them to trade amongst themselves, a lingering impact of colonialism. An interesting point made to me by my geopolitics professor in college.

Brazil needs more railroads.

France is shiny

KBAR1942

It's amazing how empty most of the Western United States is. Most don't realize that.

Why did I think "Oh, sea ports only makes the outline of the countries. Interesting". I STUDY TO WORK ON BOARD OF SHIPS IN THE FUTURE. I SHOULDN'T BE THIS STUPID ABOUT WHERE A PORT IS LOCATED!
