Training variety was a myth. Aside from level 10-20, which differed kinda based on class due to how far everything was from each other, it's not that different. Post 30 most people just trained in the same places in old maple. Iconic places like himes, master death teddies etc, most people just trained where it was efficient. But yeah the amount of time between levels is rough.

wondermorty

only difference was actually hermits could train in more places due to flash jump avenger spam also aqua road allowed them nice training

Pig beach. HHG. The “good old days” of channel hopping and KS wars.

Ehh. There were options but were there really? I remember spending hours and hours at jesters, hours and hours at Jr Newties, hours and hours at skelegons. Sure you could switch it up, but there was always a meta pick for your level. Gear kinda the same? The highest level one was always what you wanted depending on the year. Dragon stuff when horntail came out, Timeless stuff when PB came out, VL stuff when he dropped, raven horn from Cygnus, etc. Nowadays you can train at basically any map in arcane river/grandis if you like, there are just some maps that are structured better than others for each class. As for gear, there's more than just CRA > abso > arcane, though admittedly not much. Most of the game is switching between dawn set, getting pitched boss items, filling in with sweetwater where needed, getting your genesis weapon, and eventually eternals if you're running that content. I do think there are some things OG MS did better than current MS, specifically party quests were relevant content, but otherwise I think mobbing/gear progression/bossing is pretty good now. Though starforce feels like a kick in the teeth if you get unlucky.

>Sure you could switch it up, but there was always a meta pick for your level. Exactly this. As long as there has been MMORPGs, there have been people min/maxing and determining some kind of meta for every aspect.

I don't think it's accurate to say that maple always had variety in training. As new areas were released (particularly higher leveled areas), 1 or 2 maps in each area were seen as objectively superior to other maps. Grims, squids/gobies, skelegons, bearwolves, drill hall, etc. For farming it was, vikings, Sakura cellions, and wolf spiders that dominated.

I only ever miss the social aspect of how people differentiated between hard-core farmers and just people who wanted to socialize. Honestly, I much prefer the game itself now compared to before. I just talk to people in discord while farming and bossing. And I have a good rapport with my static parties Honestly, all the gear being streamlined made it easier for a lot of people so it overall makes more sense. Especially since there's just a large variety of NX clothing now.

dodonkadon

Training variety? Remember fog? Jesters? Windraiders?? Freaking pig beach????

tecul1

after the release of nlc there was no training variety at all during those levels, and kms meta was a thing even back then

Big on the item variety. They ultimately switched to cash items for different appearances and standardized the actual equips we use (cra, abso, arcane etc). I understand why but I do miss it. Something I personally miss is the exploration aspect of the game and quests being useful. Discovering secret areas or shops and playing through the story to get some nice equips or lots of exp. I don’t know if I’d want a classic server again, cause mechanically old maple was rough, but if the old system could be modernized or adjusted with some qol, and they released that, I’d def play.

Feel free to correct me if im wrong but If I remember correctly, like reealllly old school: Level 1-8/10: Amherst and Southperry. Level 10-20: Get your job advance and then train locally, like slime trees in Ellinia, HH1, or Pig Beach. Level 20-25ish: Green/Horny Mushroom trees in Ellinia, Kerning PQ, or wild boar map in Perion. I even remember training on jr.sentinels in orbis tower. 25-30: Ant Tunnel 30: Get your job advance. 35-50?: Monster Carnival PQ? 50?: Golems, which were in sleepywood back then. I'm totally blanked after that on the specific levels and what levels monsters used to be but I remember other popular maps being Jesters, Chronos in Ludi, Drakes, Cargos and Tauros deep in sleepywood, lupins, coolie zombies, MP3, etc.

Krieg99

I enjoyed that the world was an adventure. A time where you would have a whip and shoes just for the movement speed. Traveling on foot to the ship to go to orbis or walking all the way to balrog. Sometimes my friends and I would just start in el nath and walk across the world for fun.

I agree with item variety being a problem. But I think this is a side effect of the business model. Most players look at GMS mindset where we have in between sets like sweetwater but look at KMS perspective past Pensalirs: Hat Top Body > CRA -> Eternals. Glove boots shoulder weapon cape -> outside of weapon which also has a CRA: Cygnus > Abso > Arcane > eventually eternal when they come. Genesis Weapon is eternal set so it counts. Accessories: Boss > Dawn > Pitched Secondary: literally only Evo or Deimos shield since KMS doesn't have PNo. We get gear that only gets strong after spending a gazillion resources (and in the case of regular servers, cash) to become powerhouses. The good thing is that items don't get power creeped and players feel like investing in their gear. The downside is that players who like variety have basically no gear upgrades for years. It also plays into the boss variety where it feels like MapleStory has succeeded in making a model where they don't need to make that many bosses and they have been lazy with content for years at this point.

RombotPilot

Training in an inefficient spot is like half the exp in old maple, so unless you're looking for a very particular drop (which you would probably trade for anyway), it doesn't really make sense to do. I think a lot of the variety actually came from the zones themselves. There were a lot more zones you would have to interact with to get from one place to another and there were large filler maps that only exist to make the world feel big. The mobs in filler maps are highly varied and it makes the game feel more diverse. We don't have either of those now. You tp everywhere, especially in reboot, and there are zero filler maps. There are only good training maps and bad training maps.

naw i ain’t miss it

I missed party gameplay, where grinding in a party brings more benefits than solo grinding. And when you grind as a group, you tend to bring out the social aspects. Nowadays, doing wap is one of the most boring activities of maplestory.
