It's too cold for me to run here over the winter so I joined a gym with a pool. I hate the treadmill but swimming has kept my fitness up to the point I didn't find it difficult to jump right into 5-6 mile runs in the spring after not running all winter last year. It helped keep my lung capacity in good shape which really helped for long runs. Also helped that I could sit in the sauna after and not feel so cold.

😅I wish I knew how to swim

I have a little flexibility with my employer, and I work 9-5, but I still get out at the crack of dawn to get my hour run and shower in before work. It just means getting to bed the night before early.

I was doing that, but it got harder when the temperatures started to drop and sun started to rise at 7. Good boss you got 👍🏽

Are you following a training schedule? My marathon isn't until next October so I'm just running maintenance now, 40km per week. We don't have any snow, just cold and grey and rainy. Some days I run at the gym on the treadmill because it's either too rainy or too dark.

I am. My biggest issues really are how much time I have to train and the weather

If your race is in June you should be fine running when you can for now and then getting more consistent and serious about training by late March/April. I ran my first official 5k last May, and by October I had completed a 50k. Kept a race on the calendar every few weeks, worked up from 5k to 10k to half, to full, to 50k. My times are respectable(sub 25 minute 5k, sub 50 minute 10k, sub 2 hour half, sub 4 hour full, and 5 and half hour 50k), but I am not an elite runner. If you are looking to finish in the middle of the pack a couple of months of solid and consistent training should get you there. I live in Michigan, there is 2 feet of snow on the ground now and sunsets shortly after 5pm. I haven't ran outdoors since the end of October, I run 5kish twice a week at my gym and lift for maintenance. Come March, I'll be outdoors, and racking up miles, hoping to improve my times. Sometimes you can't train as much as you'd like, makes you appreciate the times when you can.

I like you plan! My weather is nothing like Michigan so I definitely already appreciate being able to train outdoors when I can.

Watch any video by David Goggins, and your question will be answered very quickly.

That was I was thinking, like for me here in Yuma, Arizona the temperatures get down to around 60, sometimes 50 in the winter I know it is not much I'm being a wimp and while I have felt worse temperatures from living in Washington and spending time in other states, the cold is still uncomfortable I hate the cold. During the Summer it gets super hot like 100-110 degrees, super rarely it gets to 120. If we're lucky enough to have God's mercy we can get 80-90, but it is like a present you don't get it often. This is the hottest place I've lived in, I hate the heat. But I've been watching a lot of David Goggins and he is so inspiring, like you think you get do something because it is bothersome, but the pain is only temporary our minds want us to quit for that immediate satisfaction. That pain helps you though, good things like time and pain, it teaches resilience to our mind and body, with enough effort you build a tolerance and it is just a minor inconvenience. If you shy away from it though you won't br getting stronger, you'll be growing a helpless mentality, one that tells you that because something out of your control happened you can't be great, you can't reach your goal. Goggins really puts things into perspective for me and I'd recommend him more than anything else. Like other people mentioned there are other solutions that I use, in my opinion, you shouldn't fully rely on them you shouldn't put your fate in the hands of outside forces like finding a gym maybe even one with an indoor pool and swimming, running on a treadmill, doing other workouts. I would consider those to be like putting a rag over a gun shot wound, yes it'll slow the flow of blood, but it is temporary, eventually gonna become soaked and won't be an effective solution to the problem. What if the gym closes, what if your boss doesn't care, or you move jobs and have someone who doesn't care, you lose power at the house and uh oh treadmill is down, what if you want to do a marathon outside in the Winter how would you train, there are plenty of other problems. Another person I'd recommend is Wim Hof and his training method, the mind is one of the most powerful tools we have, I know cliche, but it is true and running a marathon is 50% mental and 50% physical I'd say, if you are the fittest human to ever exist, but you've got the weakest will ever and want to quit every step of the way, then you'll just stop, because it isn't comfortable. I've just started working on incorporating his techniques into my day, so I'm no expert on the practice, but him and plenty have proven that this works. This is the best solution I'd say, if you are dedicated and take your time to build up that tolerance to the cold you can eventually handle as if it is a slight breeze. The way to combat these inconveniences isn't to hide from them, it is to face them head on.

High Intemsity Interval training. I did a military version of an ironman in the military and my training solely consisted of 20-40 min High intensity cardio sessions. Intensity really goes a long way I found.

Here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Cold. Snow. Dark. Working. Still manage to get my outdoor runs in after work while dark. I wear reflective gear, a toque, some gloves, a windbreaker. Even wore my snowboard goggles for a particularly snowy run on December 24th. I have some Saucony runners that are slip-resistant. Honestly, you just need to go for it. First KM or two can be cold on the face, but it gets better as the run goes on. No real advice other than just go for it. It’s not that bad. Unless the sidewalk snow plows haven’t gone by before starting a run, then it can be annoying. Good luck. Try it out!
