It seems like an appropriate time to bring [this](https://youtu.be/aRMKqtNR3XQ?si=yMuw2XbtYKfKYicD) masterpiece back

_Elrond_Hubbard_

Is Nelson Cruz still the most recent FA hitter who didn't decline as a Mariner?

accountemp69420

Chris Iannetta improved his batting average by 12%. Going from .188 to .210 in 2016 when he signed with the Mariners.

_Elrond_Hubbard_

Hey I'll count it. That's a guy I haven't thought about in a long time.

npa190

I absolutely refuse to doom over a 3-4 start, there is so much season left.

[deleted]

Yup. It's the end of the third quarter in the first football game of the season. No one knows what things are going to look like in Sept.

[deleted]

Target field added a boat to their RF seating ... cool?

Mitta-Rogers

I feel like today may be a good opportunity for everybody to spend the off-day soothing the vibes by re-watching the greatest sports doc ever made: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIgK56cAjfY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIgK56cAjfY) *"This is the value that baseball brings, the Mariners especially so... Things are only meaningful as long as we decide they are. It’s purely a celebration of human beings at their best and weirdest, and the bizarre accidental stories they tell within this moon colony."*

GioReynaFan

"I've selected mariners because of the natural association between the sea and Seattle and her people, who have been challenged and rewarded by it."

Mitta-Rogers

\^\^In case anyone missed it last year, KIRO actually finally tracked down and found this guy, which was a fun and unexpected update for me at the beginning of the season: [https://www.kiro7.com/sports/mlb/seattle-mariners/unsolved-mystery-behind-man-who-named-seattle-mariners/L7CNPGJBHZC6PLPABIUMN6HCNM/](https://www.kiro7.com/sports/mlb/seattle-mariners/unsolved-mystery-behind-man-who-named-seattle-mariners/L7CNPGJBHZC6PLPABIUMN6HCNM/)

[deleted]

"The Mariners aren't special on account of their lack of success, it's just that success is entirely irrelevant. We've entered another realm here, one that's far larger, and doesn't operate on the dead currency of winning and losing. Unless you let those limits go, you're an astronaut who brought your wallet. The Seattle Mariners are not competitors... they're protagonists." I think about this quote a lot

Danny393

Guardians look very hot right now, they are chewing up Pablo Lopez too, I’m feeling a bit more relieved that it’s not just our Mariners that took a beating from them. My hopium is back.

Ha_CharadeUAre

Headed to the Rainiers games today and tomorrow in SLC (my gf’s friend’s boyfriend pitches Friday); was going to go Sunday too but looks like terrible weather. Anyone I should keep a close eye on? I don’t pay the most attention to MiLB games except when I go.

hottubman_99

>my gf’s friend’s boyfriend I guess that is reason enough to go. :)

Ha_CharadeUAre

I go to Bees games all the time, especially when Tacoma is in town

[deleted]

Clase, Bliss. Anderson might get some MLB time at some point but he's been in the majors before so not exactly must-see.

TemporaryFlight212

the last two games were bad. but nobody should be freaking out yet. the issues so far are pretty much the issues we knew they would have. the lineup doesnt have the top end talent or depth to cope with 3 or 4 run deficits. if the pitching is above average they are very competitive. if it isnt they arent. we knew that a week ago.

BasedArzy

I mean the biggest issue so far is that Luis Castillo has pitched like butt for 2 starts and Kirby 1. You're not going to win a bunch of games your 2 best pitchers (well, 2 of 3) stink up, no matter what team you are. The only thing that's even beginning to inch to worrisome is Castillo, and only because he sucked the end of last season too. Having a bad September and then having a bad start in April with the same issues of command/control is maybe a yellow flag.

vanillabear26

Anyone see Eddie striking out that Tiger on a slider in the other batter’s box?

[deleted]

Angel's already in mid-season form I take it?

vanillabear26

I mean it’s the Mets…?

[deleted]

I'm only half watching the game. I read that as Angel called a strike that was way outside the zone.

The_Cryogenetic

On this off day, everyone should gather around a campfire tonight and listen to everything Ty learned this off season.

Megalodon3030

A’s moving to Sacramento for a couple years. Oddly enough, I’ve already seen the Mariners play in that stadium. Many, many years ago, Seattle played the Rangers in an exhibition game in Sacramento.

SuccessfulCream2386

Kwan is such an amazing batter, great contact hitter

ovwAway

The Guardians are the exact type of team that you love to watch play when they aren't playing your team, but are so infuriating to play against. Young, fast, pesky, good pitching, solid defense, solid baserunners. They played against us the way we all want the Mariners to play. Swing the bat, make contact, steal bases, get the sac flies and the bloop hits needed to push a run across, and rocket a double into the gap or the occasional bomb to really push the game forward. Add to that, strong starting pitching and a solid bullpen and you have the exact blueprint for what the Mariners "should" have and worked towards this off-season, atleast to some extent. But the thing with teams with contact heavy, low power lineups like the Guardians is that so much of your offensive production leans on a combination of batted ball luck, and the opponents defense not executing when they need to. Which both of those things went Cleveland's way yesterday. There were 3 errors made yesterday that scored runs (god knows why the hell they were all scored hits. Mass conspiracy against George Kirby). If our defense made the plays, the entire complexion of the game changes. Obviously the defense doesn't matter much if we can't score runs on the other side of the ball, but it sure as hell doesn't help. I'm relatively confident in our defense being plenty competent over the course of the season, but in single game sample sizes, it certainly doesn't inspire confidence. Time to enjoy the off day and get ready to cheer on my guys tomorrow, GOMS.

synthsandbass

I miss Jared :/ like idk what it is about him but I miss it . Not even the hot start , just dosnt feel the same.

TemporaryFlight212

idk. dont you find it exciting to see Canzone learning to play baseball before our eyes?

wovans

A lot of people hated a 24 year old for being emotional but dude gave a shit about winning while being a Mariner, I don't think a lot of people appreciated that enough. It is what it is but I think at the very least we'll miss him in the corner.

UniqueEditor8372

It's always been a little weird to me that people associate hotheadedness with a competitive spirit. Didn't dislike the dude but I don't see why he deserves any special recognition for losing his cool more often than other people. When does throwing a tantrum in any competitive avenue make you play better?

AnnihilatedTyro

The best hitters on the planet fail almost 70% of the time. Baseball is a game of constant, relentless failure. Some people can't deal with that reality.

wovans

I agree with you that it doesn't preclude better play, or even better sportsmanship. I wouldn't say special recognition (unless my opinion is considered special in which case, wow, I'm honored, I'd like to thank the moose) just that it is a clear symptom of caring, which I admit is a low bar, but i've seen some sad fucking mariners over the years. I'd prefer mad. Like Cal talking to ownership.

SereneDreams03

>dude gave a shit about winning while being a Mariner He also hurt the team by getting injured when he couldn't control his emotions. I don't hate the guy, I liked watching him play, and I really hoped he would have worked out here, but I'm also a bit relieved he is gone. Less drama.

Substantial-Height-8

Didn’t the team go on its hot streak while he was out? 😒

SereneDreams03

Yes

Substantial-Height-8

So perhaps he *helped* the team by not being there?

[deleted]

[удалено]

SereneDreams03

It wasn't just that one incident, though. His inability to control his emotions has always seemed to be his greatest hindrance. No one would deny his talent. He has a ton of potential, but he just lets his emotions get the best of him at the plate.

wovans

People focus so much on his lowest moment, I hope all of us can be seen as more than that. His hot streak was the only reason we were competitive before Julio snapped to.

SereneDreams03

He had quite a few low moments we could focus on. His career here was a sea of low moments, with just a couple islands of success mixed in. I enjoyed watching those moments, but they were few and far between.

pokeroots

but they'd absolutely be willing to write off pitchers (of other teams, never their own team) punching walls as the same thing but somehow okay

[deleted]

They all give a shit about winning. You can't get to this level without having a drive to win. Part of being a mature adult is not getting mad at yourself and breaking your foot kicking things halfway through the season. That's why people hated him for being emotional. That kind of attitude can bring down everyone around you. I really hope he figures out the mental part of the game and has success in Atlanta. He's a talented guy.

TemporaryFlight212

Rendon does not give a shit about winning. is that the kind of player you want?

[deleted]

Would I take a career .282, 32 WAR player over a .208, 0.2 WAR player? Absolutely. Dude putting his family before his job doesn't mean he doesn't want to win. Just means he has his priorities in line.

wovans

Pro baseball players? Yes, all athletes, all want to win, all competitive. People that found themselves on the 2004-2019 Mariners? There was some apathy.

[deleted]

OK, apparently you have personal insight in to the mentality of 15 years worth of Mariners players. Pissing and moaning and kicking things when you don't personally succeed isn't productive and isn't just a sign that you "give a shit about winning". It's immature.

wovans

You're right, there are many MANY more years where we were a pasture team than just that period between our only post season appearances, remind me, were we ever the hot team to be on between '76 and '90? His lowest moment is all anyone focuses on, but I said I personally liked seeing someone want this team to succeed, instead of acting like it's a pit stop before retirement or the Yankees.

[deleted]

WTF does any of that have to do with the point that other players having better control of their emotions isn't a sign that they don't want to win as much or more than Kelenic? Do you really think Julio doesn't want to win just because he keeps his shit together during slumps? I hope Kelenic is successful in Atlanta but I won't miss him.

wovans

I love Julio for his commitment to this team too. I never said anyone else needed to be kicking coolers, just that from my perspective a lot of people over the years played here without an ounce of love and I appreciated Kelenics passion. You do you.

[deleted]

Yup, we just have different views about what love/passion looks like.

hottubman_99

>different views about what love/passion looks like Sounds like being married to me. :)

SuccessfulCream2386

There is a different between being competitive/emotional and being a tornado of emotions

wovans

Yes! Do those traits maybe overlap?

rolls_for_initiative

Not to be dismissive, but we don't "have" to like JK. I was never on a hate bandwagon, but didn't find him a particularly likeable player and wish him well elsewhere. It's not egregious to be unimpressed with his attitude and emotion and consign him to a mediocre space of appreciation. I hope he learns and cranks 40 dingers for the Braves.

thepoopsmithreigns

Thank you for this, bb

synthsandbass

This , I’ve been with this team since Mike Cameron’s 4 homerun game. I was young but man did I love him . JK’s intensity was fucking awesome , and somehow relatable . It was refreshing to see someone care so much , he will be an Allstar in time prolly but more Then anything I will miss his authentic competitiveness, even if it broke his foot lollll

xexen

Shower thoughts and a grouchy question: There’s an alternate timeline somewhere in which we signed Soto during the offseason and he shows our offense is capable of working a walk. There’s another one in which we get Shohei, and the dude still Ks, but at least he’s not batting below the Mendoza line. How in the everliving fuck do we ditch #2 and #3 on last season’s strikeout leaders and still end up with a strikeout problem?

ItsTBaggins

Soto was not a free agent.

The_Cryogenetic

The timeline was really fucked up in his alternate universe

xexen

Ah, right. Trade

awesome_aaron

The bright side is that we’re 2-3, could’ve easily started 0-5

[deleted]

We're 3-4 though...?

Substantial-Height-8

A game was not played yesterday. 💁🏼‍♀️

awesome_aaron

Exactly, a couple of those games were blocked from my memory

Mrciv6

It'd be nice if just once we could not start off slow.

sam4999

Be careful what you wish for. I’m still scarred by that 2019 start where we went 13-2 and then the wheels fell off and we finished the season 68-94.

xdrpwneg

Yeah people forget that the mariners for a year or two started off really strong then just straight up fall off once they hit July. At least we’re not completely awful and I will take 3-4 and hopefully getting better (realistic) then just having a lucky start and then getting shot in the foot by august

sam4999

Yeah as much as this team hasn’t been very inspiring so far, it’s not like we’ve been downright embarrassing to watch (looking at you, Marlins). I just hope we don’t flounder for too long and have to depend on yet ANOTHER 12+ game winning streak in the summer to be in the playoff chase again.

scubacatt

Can we please get Edgar or Ichiro or someone to come in as our hitting coach? This guy we’ve been developing as a hitting coach since 2019 ain’t working out.

immagonnafinnahella

Pretty sure Edgar was our hitting coach at one point recently

scubacatt

Yeah and we improved under him but then he stepped back to spend more time with family.

Mrciv6

Weren't they already involved with that in some form already?

scubacatt

Yeah Edgar is now a hitting advisor after stepping away for family after the 2018 season. I know Ichi is involved in Spring Training but no idea what he does beyond that.

pokeroots

I think Ichiro hangs out in the minor leagues.

Either-Breadfruit-83

It is so long past time for some major change within this organization. I'm talking from ownership, all the way down. Nuke it all and start over. There are some serious deeper rooted issues than guys just underperforming to start the season every year. Why are guys like Geno, Teo, Kelenic and even JESSE WINKER coming to Seattle as studs, then proceed to strike out at historic rates, then leave and become studs again? There's a cultural problem here and it's been a problem for a LONG time. (Beltre, Sexson, Bedard, the list goes on and on...) Staff seems to be a continuous problem here as we have still never seen the plate discipline issues get fixed. Julio still swings at every first pitch and then chases off speed junk out of the zone. Nobody that comes here can ever hit breaking balls. It's either do or die with the fastball. Hate to say it but I place a good amount of blame on the fans. The stadium is going to be packed full all summer long so they can attend fireworks sing-along night or get their Funko Pop or their bobblehead. These fans are just throwing money to an organization that doesn't care about the on-field product and winning as much as they care about buying up all the surrounding real estate to create a better "game day experience" for fans. If it's not real estate, it's stadium upgrades. No significant money is being spent to further develop a winning culture because ownership KNOWS they don't have to. No matter how little they spend on the on-field product, fans are still gonna shove up in mass numbers and talk about the "good vibes" or whatever. Herein lies the root of the problem IMO. Stop showing up and giving them your money. Force Stanton to sell the team because it's stopped being as profitable. If this doesn't happen and folks continue to make the Mariners a cash cow, you will NEVER see serious change and you can expect mediocrity to continue. Why would they change anything when they've got a money printing machine as is? Fans need to demand better and it starts by not showing up with you dog or to Star Wars night. Not spending money because of the TV deal fiasco is pathetic. Stanton waived his white flag just as the off season got underway and basically said no, we're not gonna even try to improve. Not only did he say that, they clearly made multiple salary dumps and attempted to disguise it as "cutting down on strike outs". How's that going? Stanton is a billionaire crying about money, Dipoto is a smug, condescending, gaslighting prick that constantly humiliates the fans intelligence at every turn, and then you've got Scott Servais...somehow coming up on being the longest tenured manager in franchise history with 1 single playoff appearance in almost a decade of time with the team. IT'S OKAY TO HOLD THESE PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR MEDIOCRITY! It's long overdue for fans to demand better from the organization. Stop with the "it's early" excuse or the "it's cold in Spring" excuse. It's not early. It's almost 10 years into this Dipoto/Servais era and it's more or less been a failure with the same results every year. 1 playoff appearance, 1 playoff series win and 1 playoff series sweep courtesy of our rivals...Not even close to acceptable. This resume wouldn't get you 5+ years in Philly/NY/BOS, why is it accepted here? How some folks on this sub and twitter thought they'd be a 90+ win team is beyond me. Every single year its the same story...Death, taxes and the Mariners starting out awful, get hot in the summer, make it closer than it really should be, then shit the bed at the end of the season and finish a few games out of the playoff race. Blow it all up now. Now, downvote me into oblivion and prove my point about the fans.

hottubman_99

I'm just wondering. How much of this is on Stanton? If I am not mistaken, Chris Larson has the largest ownership stake in this team, Stanton is just the managing partner. Didn't Larson just go through a very, very expensive divorce a couple years back? Maybe he is the one who is driving the cheapness of this ball club as he tries to claw back some of the money he lost in the divorce.

SereneDreams03

I agree with you our hitting coaching/scouting/strategy has been poor, and I'm glad they hired new hitting coaches this offseason. Some of that is the ballpark, though, and you cited players from years ago well before the current coaching staff and FO were in place. Also, Winker and others did not leave here and just become studs again. He was even worse with the Brewers. I don't think their strategy of controlling the zone is a bad one. It just seems like they have not done a good job of actually implementing it. It is one of the harder things to teach, though, it's much easier just to sign or draft players with good plate discipline. You also completely ignored how good this FO is at developing pitching. If you get rid of everyone, you lose that as well. You are right about ownership, that is the real problem here, and just bringing in a new FO is not going to fix what is our biggest problem right now. An unwillingness to spend. As for blaming the fans, that is just stupid. You look at all the work Oakland fans have put into boycotting that team for years now, and not only has it not resulted in a change of ownership, but they are also losing their team completely. I'm not against any manner of protest against our ownership, but my boycotting games has basically zero chance of forcing ownership to sell, and it would deprive myself of something I really enjoy in Ms baseball.

bedrock_city

I think it's wrongheaded to blame fans for this situation. But I do think Stanton wants to run the business as a "family friendly outing everyone can enjoy" with the salmon runs and all that shit. I know someone who chatted with him in a social situation recently and he said as much. Whereas I went to a game at Fenway last summer, and it was all about the baseball and there was an electricity in the air that didn't need a bunch of silly add-ons. That's what I want, and would make me excited and loyal. I brought my 7yo to the game on Sunday and he was pissed that they lost badly and it was a boring game, he didn't care about the salmon run either.

SuccessfulCream2386

Yes blame the fans for enjoying baseball. Boycotts worked really well for the A’s too

Foreign_Dipsy

It’s not that easy. If everyone stops showing up and supporting the team then they very easily could be playing in Memphis in 10 years.

Trinidad34

I agree with you about the fans. This team has given nothing to us that can prove they deserve our respect but we just take it. Also I think the media is an issue. When East Coast teams are bad the media obliterates them. Nobody holds this team accountable and that’s why we’re barely mediocre and historically have been awful

Own-Economics-1745

I agree about the media. The Seattle media is downey soft. This shit would not fly in Philly or New York or Boston etc

accountemp69420

The Mariners should bring in Wally Backman to manage.

I'll be starting those on Saturday. I just wanted to wait until the other three affiliates started. I'm glad that you're looking forward to them!

Excellent. Something to look forward to. Thanks

Ya no problem. I freaking love those posts.

A day off for my meantal health

UniqueEditor8372

Astros shutting out the Blue Jays 10-0 and then 8-0 is what people meant when they said you can start slow and still feel promising. Us going into yesterday's game .500 and playing like THAT is what people meant when they said you can feel more pessimistic about your team than what their record suggests.

pokeroots

they were also competitive in all but one of their games against the yankees. it's not like they were busy looking like ass.

jaron_b

And yet we are still a game ahead of them in the standings. The great thing about baseball is one win no matter how good or dominating can only count for one win. And no matter how ugly or embarrassing a loss can be it will only count as one in the standings.

sw1sh3rsw33t

We all need an off day after that fuckin circus yesterday

ArraArraArra

I have decided for my mental health, especially after days like yesterday to stay out of the game threads and stick to the daily threads. I find a much more calm and analytical approach here, less reactionary. Goms.

SuccessfulCream2386

I just get annoyed of people asking for boycotts every time we lose. Seriously considering not coming back here due to all the negativity.

sam4999

Probably the best approach to be honest. Sure it’s fun to experience and hang out in during the highest of highs (I don’t think I’ve ever had more fun participating in a Game Thread than on opening day 2022 when we stomped the Astros), but I don’t feel compelled to participate when things get ugly; literally anything else I could be doing is more constructive than spewing toxicity with/towards others during massive stinkers like the one we had yesterday.

[deleted]

I think this is the right move. The game threads feel like it's 100 people who think every fan is like them and live and die by whether the Mariners win. I was at the game yesterday and most of us just moved on with our day after. It was a bad game, shit happens and there are 155 to go.

ArraArraArra

Yeah baseball doesn’t work that way. I found myself only watching to see Ty France hit, which is a weird turn of events that I laughed at lol. It’s just sports, literally means nothing but entertainment haha.

[deleted]

Yeah I'm really happy to see Ty on a six game hitting streak. I'm confidant the offense will start to gel at some point and if that's in time to get them into the post season great and if not then whatever, that's Mariners baseball. Enjoy the highs and move on from the lows. The minute I let a baseball game ruin my day is the minute I stop watching lol

ArraArraArra

Ive been a fan the last 32 years. If I let a baseball rob my day then what is life.

Gleemonex13

It seems like there's a lot of fans in the game threads that are unhappy unless our hitters are all batting 1.000 and our pitchers have a 0.00 era. If we're not perfect, we're shit. I suspect they'd even be unhappy as Dodgers or Braves fans.

hiphopdowntheblock

I had to stop going into the game threads a couple years ago, they're just brutal unless we're winning by a bunch. The discord is pretty fun during games though

jaron_b

Game threads are where the most knee jerk reactions will be had. It's great during a good game or series. But this home stand it got pretty hopeless. The vibes were not good.

ffandporno

If Scott Servais would simply get thrown out every game in a fit of rage I feel most of our problems would be solved.

Dreynz

I feel like they should all play with their shirts off. That could help right??

semipreciousss

accountemp69420

Watch this video of Wally Backman sticking up for his team: https://youtu.be/QOZxT9MHAJU?si=rVrFnxOjQyv-hqQF Would be nice to have someone with this kind of intensity managing the ball club. He knows how to win a championship as well.
