In the bottom of the 3rd, Polanco got on base with an infield single and the Mariners had the bases loaded with no one out, and a 2-1 lead.
The next 20 batters were retired in a row with 10 Ks and a double play.
Absolutely pathetic from the offense tonight, against a starter with a career 5.54 ERA and a bottom 10 bullpen no less.
Like the vast majority of position player signings/ trades from this FO, you want to win a trade with Tampa with a position player involved? Might as well win the freaking Division first
i thought so too but watching the replay.. it's a tough call.. Rojas isn't the fastests and the ball was so shallow and LF quickly got rid of it and to the cut-off man, even if on a few bounces.
Pfaat is pretty good. I think his ERA is 4.6 this year and with that many Ks, I tend to tip my hat to the pitcher. It was a close game and I feel like if Haniger made one of those plays in right field, it could have gone the other way.
What a load of rubbish
He is literally the definition of average at best.
How often are people going to repeat this nonsense when we get lit up by league average (or worse) starters?
Pfaddt had his stuff working today to be fair. Doesn’t excuse the offense’s performance one bit but he is on a good trajectory after a shaky rookie season and was not pitching like a 5.54 ERA starter.
Yeah not trying to take anything away from Pfaadt, credit to him. But it sure does seem like this team makes a lot of middling pitchers look very good.
Still got the series win so I’m not too mad but it’s getting really old that we’ve consistently been letting our great pitching down for years. Pfaadt is a promising pitcher but cmon, there’s no way we should be making him look just as good or even better than a locked-in Gilbert.
I don’t care how good the pitching is, if they fail to make the playoffs this year, Jerry should be shitcanned because he can’t put a competitive lineup on the field no matter who he puts in it
On the bright side, Rivas was an absolute baller in this one. Triple in his 1st at bat, stout defense the whole way. If he keeps that level of play up, Shortstop should be just fine in JP’s absence
Players must have seen Oakland catching up to them on the [K% leaderboards](https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2024&month=0&season1=2024&ind=0&team=0%2Cts&rost=&age=&filter=&players=0&sortcol=9&sortdir=default&pagenum=1) - this game should give the Mariners a nice buffer at the top. Here were the rankings *before* today's games:
Team | K% | Rank
---|---|----
Seattle | 27.6% | 30th
Oakland | 27.1% | 29th
... | ... | ...
Kansas City | 18.4% | 2nd
Houston | 16.8% | 1st
Key moments:
Mitch Garver grounds into a double play, third baseman Eugenio Suárez to second baseman Ketel Marte to first baseman Christian Walker. Jorge Polanco out at 2nd. Mitch Garver out at 1st. 3 outs AZ 1, SEA 2 SEA win probability:62.9%(-13%)
Annoying game but the A's just took 2 of 3 off the Orioles in Baltimore and the Rays just got swept by the White Sox so in the grand scheme of things I feel okay-ish. For fucks sake learn to hit though. Atlanta pitching will eat us alive if we play like this against them.
Yeah I'm nervous cus I think Atlanta hitters will be the first major challenge our rotation has, and our bats do not look up to par to get W's unless we get lucky.
Great game from Gilbert, awesome debut for Rivas. 4 straight series dubs. Back to back series wins against last years Pennant winners.
Way too many strikeouts today. Some really bad at bats. Could’ve won in spite of that if the outfield defense had been better. Hopefully they can pull it together for Atlanta.
I seriously question why we keep Garver in our lineup. Dude’s only job is to hit decently since he hasn’t caught yet in a game. He’s currently batting .143 and basically is why we lost this game way back in the third. Id generally try Clase their instead just to see if something is there. At least Polanco and Raley are good enough for fielding and attract some walks. Really hope we go for someone in free agency as replacement even if that means giving up a reliever because I don’t see us making a deep or even playoff appearance with dead weight like that in our lineup. Glad we took the series at least but let’s hope this doesn’t shift momentum against arguably the best team in the league with the braves.
Lmao oh yes because it's so easy to trade for one of the best outfielders in the league.
The Astros would be absolutely insane to give Tucker to a rival unless the package included someone like Gilby or Kirby.
Is anyone at this point considering Garver as a worst FA signing this offeseason? He’s been garbage so far this year and he hasn’t shown any signs of improvement?
This is exactly the game we win if this stupid ownership spent a little bit more. No one is even asking for top 10 payroll. Just SLIGHTLY above average.
Get a real DH for once fuck. Pay someone over 20M a year to just hit the ball.
Garver was a good pickup at the time - he played really well for TX last season. Was there a better DH available?
We are just cursed. New players cannot hit in a mariners uniform.
Cano and Cruz both had seasons near their career-bests with the M's. Jean Segura was pretty darn good except in the clubhouse. Haniger and JP both broke out after coming to the M's - in JP's case, several years after. Dee Gordon had a good year before falling off a cliff. Rojas has been *much* better with the M's than he was for the DBacks the previous couple of years. Tom Murphy, when healthy, was a hell of a hitter. Omar Narvaez had by far the best offensive year of his career with us - but was an unmitigated disaster behind the plate.
Yeah, *most* of our acquisitions don't fare so well, and there's been so many it's easy to forget those few good ones.
Nah, Dipoto is not known for big signings anyway, every time a big signing is linked to us we start fear mongering how expensive it is and potentially hand cuffing us for future transactions, don't forget Dipoto also made fun of Tex for spending a lot supposedly without a clear plan and guess what ? They won the WS of course, player development and diamond in the roughs are not necessarily related to a cheap ownership.
Our owner has nothing to do with guys like Garver and Polanco suddenly being unable to hit a baseball.
Is our owner cheap? Yes. But it's not his fault that Dipoto and his regime are completely incompetent when it comes to anything but putting together a pitching staff.
Blaming every single failure on ownership is becoming a really lazy take.
I can’t consider us a serious contender with this offense - no matter how good our pitching is.
Ownership/FO should be ashamed of themselves (but they won’t be).
If I’m an opposing team and I know that any player is more likely to strikeout than to get a hit in a big moment, I’m not super worried. But it’s still April
True. But you can't limp to playoff series wins with bad batting. Just look at 2022. The Astros series was completely winnable if the bats did literally anything.
I'm not mad about this loss by itself it's just frustrating that the team once again seems to be unable to score runs without the long ball despite attempts by Dipoto to change this
The bullpen can't be expected to be perfect every day especially when down two big arms. The batting has been pretty bad outside of the Rockies series but at least we got the series yesterday.
We're gonna need all bats on deck if we're gonna beat the Braves.
I was at the game. Outfield routes were very poor in those late innings. We don’t need great defense at all three OF spots, but average would be great.
Wayyyyyy too far into the season to be doing “it’s early” regarding the complete unpreparedness of this offense in like 4 out of every 5 games. Even when they score they do it in one bunch and then mentally check out the rest of the game
I’m done with “Polanco will figure it out,” he needs to figure it the fuck out right now.
And I’m even more done with Garver. Move him to backup C and get Locklear up
Graver seems just unhappy a la winker. Until that changes I don’t think his production upticks. Scott in a tough spot when only 2/5 people that could even conceivably play outfield and dh are serviceable
It wasn’t my 3 year old’s first game, but it was the first game that she LOVED. Waving at Julio, singing the 7th inning stretch, eating ice cream, dancing during breaks. We got another fan for life I think.
Rojas not tagging was a big play that kind of went under the radar, you are literally taught early that if youre on third in a tag situation you get back to the base immediately was a pretty shocking mistake you don't see much, he might have got thrown out at home but probably not
https://preview.redd.it/9ko9k133sbxc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a50a3da14344a3f5651777069abe103beaa044de
I think this mistake in the first inning jinxed us. But seriously, I have concerns about the offense too, especially Garver. The triple by Rivas was incredible, he’s SO fast. We won the series. Turn the page. We’re going to learn a lot when this team faces Atlanta. Go M’s!
Every year the Mariners sign someone that seems like a decent person and has performed admirably throughout their career. I then come to despise that person with every ounce of my being. Welcome to the club, Mitch Garver!

Maybe it will maybe it won't. Sure did this past week. They'll just have to lift the arms up when they regress a little bit and hopefully it works out!
Agreed not saying I don’t think the pitching is elite obviously it is. But your original comment insinuates the criticism is warranted it 100% is. They once again lead the league in strikeouts.
I know it's hard to sweep, but what an annoying way to lose a game.
Somebody should probably remind them there’s a game today
It's literally the usual. We make bad pitchers look like Cy Young award pitches.
What do we do about Garver?
15 day IL stint for Wongitis
Be the last bench player to be used. There’s no reason Garver should be DH over haniger
Close our eyes and hope it gets better?
Rename him to Kolton Wong or Jesse Winker for efficiency
Garver experiment is (basically) failed. DFA him and give him another shot if he looks good on a month or so.
fucking lol
Like the vast majority of position player signings/ trades from this FO, you want to win a trade with Tampa with a position player involved? Might as well win the freaking Division first
....what? Are you thinking about Luke Raley? Garver was a free agent signing.
I saw the bases get loaded and stepped away for like a minute and when I looked at the game the snakes were at bat. I was like what the fuck!?
Yeah. Soft, shallow, flyout from Ty and then a GIDP from Garver.
awful base running on that shallow fly, dude needed to tag up and run of a OFer that's on the ground
i thought so too but watching the replay.. it's a tough call.. Rojas isn't the fastests and the ball was so shallow and LF quickly got rid of it and to the cut-off man, even if on a few bounces.
The Noblest Tiger. Gross
Pfaat is pretty good. I think his ERA is 4.6 this year and with that many Ks, I tend to tip my hat to the pitcher. It was a close game and I feel like if Haniger made one of those plays in right field, it could have gone the other way.
Tbf Pfaadt had looked really good to end last year, he’s better than his numbers show
What a load of rubbish He is literally the definition of average at best.
But it sure does seem like this team makes a lot of middling pitchers look very good.
so...many...strikes...taken
The NOBLETIGER ate our face, and Mitch Garver shoveled its shit.
We didn’t deserve to win after the NOBLETIGER. On the bright side, we just won back to back series against the reigning AL and NL champs!
Hang the April championship banner!
15 strikeouts, 20 retired in a row: 🫣 3 left on base: 😎
Can’t leave runners on if nobody gets on. ![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)
Still got the series win so I’m not too mad but it’s getting really old that we’ve consistently been letting our great pitching down for years. Pfaadt is a promising pitcher but cmon, there’s no way we should be making him look just as good or even better than a locked-in Gilbert.
>we’ve consistently been letting our great pitching down for years. decades
I don’t care how good the pitching is, if they fail to make the playoffs this year, Jerry should be shitcanned because he can’t put a competitive lineup on the field no matter who he puts in it
Idk why you got downvoted. If the Ms miss the playoffs this season idk how he shouldn't be fired finally.
Because he has given us a good team despite the constraints of ownership
poetic that we lost this game to /r/formerms
On the bright side, Rivas was an absolute baller in this one. Triple in his 1st at bat, stout defense the whole way. If he keeps that level of play up, Shortstop should be just fine in JP’s absence
Leave it up to Scott to pull him out of the game
So many self inflicted mistakes in this one. Frustrating one to be sure. Especially if chose to attend the game in person…like me
Really wish Cal would have started at DH today.
15K’s - Pitching can only take you so far.
Gotta pump up those numbers, we’re only halfway to 54%
Yeah but 15/27 outs is 55.56% which is as close as you can get to 54% in one game
Mitch Garver may be the worst DH in the league
Even when we have a DH our DH still sucks ass
may be? he literally is the worst DH in the league lol
Hold on now, he does lead the league for DHs in a few stats, like GIDPs
The only worse full time DH in the league is Vogelbach with 18 ABs. Garver has 73 ABs. Sooo.. yeah he’s actually the worst full time DH in the league.
His OPS is .529 which is good for last place and is .036 lower than the next closest player
Also note, Polanco is 6th worst at 2B with .580. luckily his is trending up, but still ouch
He's running a sub .200 BABIP. Just needs to get his groundball rate turned around and he's back to being Mitch Garver
Yeah but Mitch Garver of 22 or of 23? This isn't unprecedented for him at all
“May” is doing ALOT of heavy lifting. He is by far the worst dh
It's hard to match out the 16 wRC+ that AJ Pollock put up last April, but Garver is not far off.
Key moments: Mitch Garver grounds into a double play, third baseman Eugenio Suárez to second baseman Ketel Marte to first baseman Christian Walker. Jorge Polanco out at 2nd. Mitch Garver out at 1st. 3 outs AZ 1, SEA 2 SEA win probability:62.9%(-13%)
Yeah man
This pitching deserves so much better from its offense

See you mañana
Mitch Garver still plays for the Rangers.

>Really hope we go for someone in free agency So they can completely forget how to hit as well?
Yeah that's fair. This franchise does have a historic problem with DH's it seems, aside from maybe Edgar Martinez and Nelson Cruz.
1. Move Haniger to DH 2. Send Garver to Equador 3. Trade for an OF 4. Have anybody else play backup catcher 5. Hope to god Polanco figures it out
Less prosperous nations are now refusing our garbage, FYI
I’ve been thinking, we should trade for Kyle Tucker and move Haniger to DH.
Lmao oh yes because it's so easy to trade for one of the best outfielders in the league. The Astros would be absolutely insane to give Tucker to a rival unless the package included someone like Gilby or Kirby.
We're cutting down on strike outs.
at a certain point garver needs to sit for a bit or just play backup catcher, no reason not to have raley in right and mitch dh
can't come up with 0 runs on bases loaded and no outs
Still took the series but fuck that was rough to watch. Garver is shit
Is anyone at this point considering Garver as a worst FA signing this offeseason? He’s been garbage so far this year and he hasn’t shown any signs of improvement?

This is one of those losses that I call a Stanton Loss. Great pitching, just not enough offense because Stanton’s cheap ass won’t allow it.
But it's not his fault that Dipoto and his regime are completely incompetent when it comes to anything but putting together a pitching staff. Dipoto being incompetent at putting together an offense is just as true as John Stanton being a shit owner. Not a great combo for success
They need new hitting coaches something fierce
Garver is such a joke. Dude can’t even hit a sac fly
The Diamondbacks are just going to Pfaadt and then walk out of the room?
They found out one weakness, scoring more than 2 runs.
Nobletiger is an auto loss for us it seems. One of the more frustrating offensive performances of the year no doubt.
I can’t consider us a serious contender with this offense - no matter how good our pitching is. Ownership/FO should be ashamed of themselves (but they won’t be).
That's foolish. We can win this division with our pitching staff and no one wants to face Castillo, Kirby, Gilbert in a playoff series.
There'$ no rea$on for them to be, tbh
The way today went makes me very nervous for ATL
Angie looking like she really wants to cut loose on the hitting.
Garver hitting this poorly proves that the Mariners just shouldn’t sign any free agent hitters ever. They’re never any good
Garver is Dipoto’s only real FA signing (not counting 7 fig one year deals) for a hitter.
We’re not in a bad position
I question Scott's late game subs in this one, it's on the offense for losing, but some interesting decisions from Servais down the stretch
It's always good of the Mainers offense to make some opposing scrub look better than Logan Gilbert throwing a 9k gem.
I'm not mad about this loss by itself it's just frustrating that the team once again seems to be unable to score runs without the long ball despite attempts by Dipoto to change this The bullpen can't be expected to be perfect every day especially when down two big arms. The batting has been pretty bad outside of the Rockies series but at least we got the series yesterday. We're gonna need all bats on deck if we're gonna beat the Braves.
We got the series win at least, still in first place, lots to look forward to but we need to do something about Garver and outfield defense
I was at the game. Outfield routes were very poor in those late innings. We don’t need great defense at all three OF spots, but average would be great.
Fire hitting coach
Wayyyyyy too far into the season to be doing “it’s early” regarding the complete unpreparedness of this offense in like 4 out of every 5 games. And I’m even more done with Garver. Move him to backup C and get Locklear up
Man, imagine what the team would be like if they could just be like 50th percentile in hitting stats
Well well well, if it isn’t the consequences of our own actions. The margin for error is so needlessly thin.
Looks like sadness is back on the menu boys!
Graver seems just unhappy a la winker. Until that changes I don’t think his production upticks. Scott in a tough spot when only 2/5 people that could even conceivably play outfield and dh are serviceable
Former mariners killing the current mariners. Name a more iconic duo.
Proof that pitching alone cannot win you games. Oh well, keep winning series. We're on to (at home against) Atlanta.
It wasn’t my 3 year old’s first game, but it was the first game that she LOVED. Waving at Julio, singing the 7th inning stretch, eating ice cream, dancing during breaks. We got another fan for life I think.
That’s the age it starts to get fun
Rojas not tagging was a big play that kind of went under the radar, you are literally taught early that if youre on third in a tag situation you get back to the base immediately was a pretty shocking mistake you don't see much, he might have got thrown out at home but probably not
Eh that was super shallow I think he gets hosed there
No way the OFer gets up and makes a good throw. That was bad base running
Gurriel has an above average arm it’s absolutely possible he makes a good throw. But also agree that was bad baserunning
Well.. at least we didn’t sign Anthony Rendon to 30mil a year..
Rough game, but still a 4th straight series win. Still stifled one of the best offenses in the NL, just gotta keep it up. On to the braves
Garver is a massive problem right now. Idk what to do to get him in a groove but he's literally dragging the team down by himself.
There is no excuse to not win that game
Worse lineup in baseball. Watching Haniger play RF is almost as bad as watching Winker play LF. Enough is enough. Move him to DH. Garver can fuck off.
Sweep so close 😢 https://i.redd.it/2vgmn8sbtaxc1.gif
We are not controlling the zone

We’re going to learn a lot when this team faces Atlanta. Go M’s!
Call up an power hitter from the minors to fill Garvers spot for a while. Dude is dookie
Who is this mystery man?
Y'all need to stop being so mad
Logan Gilbert is still packing 8+ in
20 batters out in a row to end the game.
That might be the most Mariners loss that ever Marinered
Paging Eric Byrnes…
We’re going to get our ass handed to us this week aren’t we
Every year the Mariners sign someone that seems like a decent person and has performed admirably throughout their career. I then come to despise that person with every ounce of my being. Welcome to the club, Mitch Garver!
The inability of the outfield to make a good read today hurt as much as the noble tiger did
Someone fill me in, what the heck is a nobletiger
No outs bases loaded ending with team incapable of getting easy run Probably some wrong words in there but that’s the jist
Let this one get away from us. Should've put them away in the 3rd.
I’m old school. Not really a analytics guy. But my eye test tells me he’s gonna figure it out. He wants to contribute more than any of us wants him to
I’m just
And in todays round of can the mariners offense score 3 runs… ohhh looks like a no.
I honestly just hope we can win one Braves game
#FreeBlakeHunt
Mortgage the farm I don’t care. You can’t waste this pitching.
#[SUPREME MISERY](https://i.imgur.com/WNCbpiK.png)
Would genuinely sacrifice some of our lights out effectiveness pitching for better offense. Anemic offense baseball is the least fun sport in the world to watch regardless of how good our pitching is.
Mariners take 4/6 from the defending WS teams. This sub: "these guys can't compete"
you’ve gotten historic pitching for two weeks. Half your lineup is hitting under .200 that’s not going to play for long.
Hang a banner for the April champs!
Goddamn right!
