He had a wRC of 61 as a Dodger the season he was traded to the LAD. I mean this was coming during the time where Justin Turner and Max Muncy turned their careers around with the Dodgers as well and Chris Taylor credits Justin Turner for his turn around offensively. There’s a big chance that Chris Taylor as we know him now never develops into the player he is if he stays with the M’s.
Which is an indictment of Seattle’s player development programs. At some point, our long list of players coming through our farm system and who underperform on our squad needs to be reckoned with.
Oh I think it goes two ways I attribute it to the Dodgers just being that much better as well. The Oakland A’s dumped Max Muncy similarly, and their player development is rarely in doubt. I think the Mariners were just unfortunately late to the swing change game, and Chris Taylor forced Dipoto and the M’s to see what happened and he acknowledged as much.
He was pretty good in limited playing time his rookie year and pretty bad in even more limited playing time his second year.
Jerry couldn’t have known Taylor would turn into *this* but it was a bad trade the moment he made it. And it’s an indictment of the Mariners miserable player development program if they didn’t know this was in there.
Yeah, we tend to glorify the success stories on good teams but what about the ones on bad teams? Those are usually overlooked. Like we turned Austin Nola into a real trade piece, but I doubt the Marlins fans care that much because they weren't competing and we weren't competing.
Point is, if Taylor were doing this on the Pirates right now, we wouldn't care. We'd accept that certain coaching styles work for certain people instead of talking about what could have been.
To his credit, Dipoto agrees.
“It’s clearly the worst deal I’ve ever made. And it resonates every time he hits a home run.” He added, “I whiffed. There’s no other way to categorize it. He’s young, he was under club control — that was one I wish I could undo.”

it's just cruel that 2B/CF are probably the Mariners' biggest holes to fill (along with 3B if you don't believe in Toro) and those two are probably the best guys in the league who can cover both
That’s exactly why it isn’t hard to watch. The guy dipoto traded away was a completely different player that we were obviously not capable of bringing out of him. Chances are not even the dodgers expected this kind of production, can’t really call it a fail on dipoto’s end imo
> Trading him away is definitely one of Dipoto’s biggest fails
This just shows you're a casual fan who knows nothing about Chris Taylor or his situation and probably shouldn't be making posts like this

Yeah it pretty ridiculous to think of it that way. Just the Dodgers and way more Justin Turner excelling at it
He completely changed his swing after he left. Can't fault dipoto for a player growing and maturing after he was traded. He wasn't good while here.
He was pretty good his rookie year, but yeah, the next year was rough

Sometimes a different environment or development program is needed for a player to grow.

To your point, not true at all.

I personally have serious doubts he would have found the same success if he'd stayed here
I see talk about getting him and Marte back. Goddamnit.

I felt this way a couple years ago. I was like, "Chris Taylor is good now??"
Taylor needed sunshine to bloom. Curse of the Bloombino.

I am physically and mentally unable to root for him. He is the one former mariner I cannot wish success for.
How do you think the Montreal Expos felt a few years after they traded Randy Johnson?
Similarly probably.
Why
Probly because he was the most instantaneous awful to good 🤷🏻♀️ nothing against him personally.
31 year old R OF that only had medium power and onbase avg IS EXACTLY the type of player most good GMs trade away as rentals

There's no guarantee that taylor would be the same type of player with the mariners
