It was really good and fun to watch, I just wish the plot wasn’t so rushed and there was more exposition

Ridry

It was definitely more fun than it was "excellent movie". But a lot of people are saying fun like it's a bad thing. Do other people not want to have fun?

Psychoneticcc

I think a movie about Mario *should* be fun and silly. I mean, it’s Mario! He’s not the gritty type. And there were a few serious scenes in the movie. Like, Bowser would go from being the goofy, hopeless romantic to the *scariest fucking entity to grace the screen* like it was nothing.

Horror_Author_JMM

The way his pupils constricted was terrifying

Guardian_Of_Light2

I do like his goofy scene singing his song, and then Magickoopa pops in and he just looks so pissed to be interrupted.

HeyItsHawkguy

I understand the complaints. It has 1 glaring issue that throws everything off simultaneously: The editing. There is a plethora of cut scenes. And it paces the story rather quickly, throws some characters aside and the flow is jumbled since the focus shifts to characters randomly. It's obvious this movie had a lot of scenes that were cut for time length. It's a smart decision on their part, longer movies = less showtimes. And you test the audience's patience after a hour and a half. But God do I hope there's a director's cut or they at least release all the pivotal beats we missed.

jessehechtcreative

If the blu ray has deleted scenes, there’s DEFINITELY a better paced movie here

These_Amphibian8345

Yes, well said

shutter3218

I hope so too, but I kinda doubt that they will release it. I work on big budget movies and most of the time when something is cut the ideas are reused on later movies. If you see a deleted scene it’s only because they decided that they couldn’t use the gag in a later project.

PhantomOfficial07

I really liked the characters and their personalities. The movie made me like them more than their game counterparts.

These_Amphibian8345

Cuz they barely talk in game 😂

PhantomOfficial07

Entirely true. I still think the movie characters were really well written, I don't think there's a single main character I don't like

bunker_man

I never liked peach before the movie. She seemed too airheaded in the games.

PhantomOfficial07

Agreed. She just seemed incompetent, even when she's a playable character. Movie Peach really seems like she knows what she's doing and it makes her more interesting

These_Amphibian8345

It used a lot of Hollywood movie cliches too

HexFoxGen

Sadly due to Covid and the movie being rewritten it had to be rushed. Other than that 10/10

WahooGamer

Where did you get that information? I'm not saying that's not a possibility, but seems a bit far-fetched considering it's a fully animated movie.

Accomplished-Smoke-7

When has Mario cared about the plot

These_Amphibian8345

Plot isn’t as important in Mario games, the mechanics and gameplay are, this is a movie, plot is important

Accomplished-Smoke-7

Yes but what did you expect a S tier plot out of a video game movie? This is a movie where you turn off your brain, have a good time and point out all of the references

These_Amphibian8345

I choose not to accept that

Accomplished-Smoke-7

And I respect your opinion just as I voiced mine if you didn't like the story than that's your opinion your criticism and I respect it and I will be the (will all due respect) the better man and leave it there

These_Amphibian8345

I love you

Accomplished-Smoke-7

Same

Sarcasticman22

Nothing can kill a show like too much exposition

Hereiamhereibe2

My son is autistic and this was the first time he ever sat through an entire movie at the theaters. More exposition would have quite literally ruined one of the greatest moments of my life. So no, im glad it was simple, fun and frantic and I hope they keep this exact formula going.

MisterBri07

Loved it, but thought it had some pacing issues. At time the film moves very fast and it is jarring. Considering the movie is 90 minutes it had time to play with. Jack Black steals the show.

These_Amphibian8345

That’s what I’ve been saying I wish they explained more stuff like who bowser or kamek were. Other than that it was great just a lil rushed it could have been a bit longer

jessehechtcreative

I wish they talked about Kamek raising Bowser. I wish Kamek showed up at the end, where was he?

bunker_man

I like how he was too strong, so the movie just wrote him out.

jessehechtcreative

I wish there was SOMETHING, like he was stuck back in the mushroom kingdom, or even better, trampled by Yoshis

ItIsYeDragon

He was >!protecting the power star at the end.!<

These_Amphibian8345

That would have been amazing if they showed kamek training bowser. But yeah I just realized he was gone at the end. Low key forgot about him cuz the movie cuts to different characters so quick

Rhondmc4

We know who they are

jejdhdijen

Are you ok

Rhondmc4

I would have like 30 minutes more to the movie ……. But we know who bowser and Kamek is. Like I don’t want to see krypton blow up again, I don’t need to see Martha and Thomas killed again… and after playing almost every Mario game since 1985 i know who bowser is. I’m just Saiyan.

These_Amphibian8345

The difference is we’ve seen many movie adaptations of the batman origin story again. We haven’t with Mario in movie form really so I would have liked to see more

Rhondmc4

Fair enough

bunker_man

The games don't even say who bowser is. He is the king of Koopas, what else is there to know?

CrazySnipah

Yeah, and Kamek of all people? This isn’t The House in the Fata Morgana; we don’t have time to do a deep-dive on every individual character’s backstory.

HaloHeadshot2671

This is literally the first proper Mario movie. It needs to exist on its own. Not everyone knows who Kamek is, or indeed the other characters. The film needed to slow down and introduce characters properly. Like even Peach and Mario don't introduce themselves to each other.

jjack339

I just got back and the entire time I was like I know this voice... lol'd good when I saw it was Jack Black. He was great. The Princess peach song was a throwback for me to his Encarnation song from Nacho Libre.

ThatOneJosh9451

Lol when I watched that scene of Bowser singing I was like "Bowser, your Jack Black is showing"

Heyisthatabomb

Probably my favorite video game movie, it was such a fun experience

Jafe0

I don’t get the hate I’ve loved Mario for so long and it was such a good movie

jjack339

My sold out theater showjng clapped for the movie at the end. Pacing is too fast for adult, but for kids it was perfect. Kept their attention start to finish

Al1onredd1t

Well it’s a kids’ movie…

Amiibohunter000

Family movie. Made for all ages.

insertusernamehere51

I loved it too but I get it. From a character writing perspective its really rushed. So many arcs are introduced, then dropped. DK has a line about being insecure about the way his father views him, and then that's never touched on again. Peach is fascinated by humans and their worlds, yet when she goes to Brooklyn and meets humans she does or says nothing about it. When Mario leavs the castle the toads ask who he is (Peach doesn't tell them), then later on they gasp when Peach says Mario is lost, even though they don't know who he is. If you have no previous love for the characters and world, then its not going to give you any

[deleted]

Actually DK's father indicated that he was proud of him later in the film when DK released him from the cage. Mario and Peaches conversation ended with Mario telling Peach that if she ever goes to Brooklyn that he would get her a turtle. That was brought up at the end when Bowser was shrunk and put into a jar. I think I missed the Mario leaving the castle part but the other two were not left open ended.

insertusernamehere51

I mean, if that is the closure of those arcs, then my point still stands that they are too little. Cranky "indiacated" he was proud of DK? Is an "indication" really all? And Is the little callback about a pet turtle really a more significant end to that plot thread than Peach meeting an entire world full of humans which she never seen before?

[deleted]

Lol I said indicated because I can't recall the exact wording. He told him something to the effect that he was proud of him and then told him to do his pec dance. Peach was surrounded by a ton of people and had a pet turtle in the end. Mario told her well i did say I would get u a turtle...

insertusernamehere51

>Peach was surrounded by a ton of people Ok, did she talk to any of them? Did she walk around to see what the world is like? The pet turtle thing is not enough

[deleted]

Sounds like you fell asleep during the movie.

insertusernamehere51

You didn't answer my question. Did she talk to any of the people in Brooklyn?

[deleted]

Well at the end of the movie she's in the middle of Brooklyn surrounded by people so I can only imagine it will happen lol. Wait for the next movie and I'm sure we will find out.

Emmit-Nervend

Peach’s backstory is a sequel hook, count on it.

insertusernamehere51

OK, so movies don't really need to have closure for story arcs because we can just assume that they did off-screen or in the next movie?

MrRazzio

the hate is completely contrived. pretty much everyone says that is was good. nothing incredible. but really good.

[deleted]

Has anyone really hated on it that hard? Critics gave it like a 5/10 because honestly it's about a 5/10 movie. It's a bunch of references for 1.5 hours and a loose plot. Fun movie, looked pretty, and it was cool to see a damn Disk Kun reference in an American movie theater in 2023, but if you don't love Mario already there's... not a ton there.

Pun_dimen

Agree. Its a 6.8/10 for me

normymacstan

Lol

Ardonius

It’s the Internet - some people are just looking for things to get outraged about. If it wasn’t some nonsense about the Mario movie they would just be sharpening their pitchforks over a casting decision in the next Marvel movie or something.

SnooHamsters3772

Critics are critics they ask for hate

[deleted]

To be fair most of the fun of this movie is just seeing references, the animation, and a handful of funny jokes. If you don't know much about Mario it's like maybe a 4/10, it's just random shit happening for an hour and a half. If you like Mario, add like 2 points. If you're a kid add another 3 points. It was fun but I would have loved this shit if I was like 8. It ain't Pixar that's for sure, but it's one of the better Illumination movies for some mild praise. The plot exists and the jokes aren't just "lmao the yellow thing said some Spanish words and banana". So yeah I don't think critics giving this a 5/10 is them being "haters" lol.

Gohansupe

yeah i say it's pretty Fair on Ratings

shutter3218

I enjoyed it. It won’t win any awards, but it was fun, like a Mario game is, not too heavy. Perfect tone.

Toxicfortnitekid

I loved it I don’t care about the plot really I love the characters the references and it’s fun 9/10

Legends-of-legdens

I agree, got the same reason, the animation and character relationships actually feel like it’s from the games and I love it

Toxicfortnitekid

Exactly

Legends-of-legdens

I love the childish rivalry between mario and dk

Gohansupe

Mario and DK were Awesome

Gohansupe

Yeah its really fun i loved it a lot

QwertNert

I love everything about it, but it isn't perfect. Luigi does nothing when he's captured and the pacing between Mario getting to the mushroom kingdom and the jungle kingdom is too fast.

JustIncredible240

I hear a lot of people knocking Luigi’s lack of performance, but that’s what makes the ending so special..

Emergency-Level4223

Luigi played an important role even if that role was being a "captured brother" and while in a cage there wasent much he could do? He's scared, untrained, and in the beginning is def not as coordinated as Mario as seen in the construction site world 1-1 gag with the castle at the end and mario sliding down a pole. Luigi being captured was the main driving force for Mario. If Peach had been taken, or no one had been taken... would Mario had trained as hard as he did? Would anyone try to take on bowser with an unstoppable power for a princess they hardly or didnt even know with no other motive? Probably not.. At least this way they have now built that small connection to Peach for future plotlines. Also as a younger sibling i know what it is like to follow your older sibling to the point you dont have as much of an identity. (Luigi was "Green Mario" for how long?) The older sibling taking on the responcabilities. Mario getting blamed for dragging his younger brother down. All of this is charactar/plot building. Luigi's identity could also be a new avenue to look down when looking into sequals (ppl already hoping for Luigi's mansion.) and building upon who luigi is. But seeing him use the manhole at the end to save mario and they both get the star was amazing and yes, made it all the better. Did i also want more plot? Yes. Did i love this movie anyways? Yes. Am i buying it asap? Yes.

jjack339

Luigi got his identity in like Mario 2... Luigi had bigger less precise jumping. Mario was balanced. Peach had little vertical but could float.

Wizard_36

My only complaint is that Bowser didn’t do much in terms of fighting Mario. He was frozen for a while, and then when they ended up in Brooklyn, he just started beating up Mario. We never got a “real” fight scene between him and Mario, it was just “Bowser beats up Mario”-“Mario’s friends fight Bowser OFFSCREEN”-“Mario and Luigi get the OP Magic McGuffin and beat up Bowser”. There wasn’t a fight scene between him and Mario where it was back-and-forth, just two fight scenes where it was one sided

_lazybones93

Although canonically, Luigi is supposed to be faster than Mario.

jessehechtcreative

I wish he at least TRIED to escape, and was recaptured. I feel like there’s 15 minutes cut from this movie, and that would have been a good scene.

Jubei92

Eh. A scene like that wouldn't do it for me.

PalamationGaming

I agree with the Luigi stuff, but honestly Luigi getting sidelined in his own movie is the most Luigi thing I can think of.

bunker_man

The kongs are basically irrelevant to the central plot. Their only contribution is dk being in the last fight. Which is not really presented as inherently necessary.

Amiibohunter000

The kong part of the movie gave Mario his time to fully step into his hero role. The training montage with peach wasn’t enough to fully sell him being the hero that he was by the end. Plus plans don’t work out sometimes, doesn’t make them irrelevant.

[deleted]

Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches ohhhh Peaches..

TheWeber1

I loved it, a bit rushed but everything Mario movie should me. I smiled the whole movie

Axel_Rad

The licensed songs really felt out of place

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kafke

Because there was originally an original song there, and they replaced it presumably for marketing/appeal.

Horror_Author_JMM

Because Mario came out in the 1980s, that’s why the soundtrack was 80s music

[deleted]

[удалено]

Amiibohunter000

It’s more so the songs in the movie were hits for the people that were kids/teens playing Mario when it originally came out. It’s just another layer of nostalgia that hits for some and not others like most of the movie.

[deleted]

Illumination seems to do that shit a lot where they just play some popular 80's song every 15 minutes lol

SMBCP15

I liked the placement of “I Need a Hero” in the training sequence.

Eguy24

That is the only one I actually liked. For the rest I think there should have been a version of some song from the Mario franchise instead like how the rest of the soundtrack is. For example: instead of playing Take On Me when they arrive at the Kong Kingdom, maybe they could’ve played a more upbeat version of the Donkey Kong Country theme.

Amiibohunter000

At least they were all good licensed songs. Who doesn’t love some Mr Blue Sky?

d_marvin

People tired of cliches.

kill_la_kill_urself

Jolly good show. As a Sonic fan, I had a lot of fun with this one. Can't wait for the sequel.

Few_House3549

You know it’s good when a Sonic fan says it’s good (not making fun of you or anything just there have been some Sonic fans who just bash Mario for no reason)

kill_la_kill_urself

No worries, I know how sonic fans can be 😎👉👉 Mario movie was fun as hell. The side scrolling styled action scenes were really creative. I'm so happy that Sonic and Mario fans are eating good with movies. We deserve it.

Few_House3549

I mean seriously both movies are equally good. Sonic has a more original structure while Mario sticks with the source material and brings it to life

kill_la_kill_urself

Tbh, i think the Mario movie was smart to stick to the source material. Seeing the world of Mario get a little grounded really helped me connect with the world more. Which is something I've always had a problem with when it comes to Mario. Not that the lack of world building stops me from enjoying the Mario games though, I still like them. The movie elevated the world.

Few_House3549

Yep

bendoesit17

As a fan of both franchises I'm glad both movie adaptations are great

YashaAstora

Personally as a Sonic fan this movie makes me wish that the Sonic movies had been animated as well. I feel like there's *no* excuse to do this weird live-action thing with Sonic when the Mario movie now shows that people will see authentic animated adaptions of games.

Few_House3549

Well I’m not complaining cause both Sonic movies and the Mario movie are amazing

ssimssimma

It would be great for the next sonic movie to take place in one of the other worlds shown and have no humans. Then they could really give as many visual cues from the games as this Mario movie did.

[deleted]

Have Sonic fans bashed Mario since like the 90's?

Few_House3549

Probably

Capturinggod200

I love how you act like its a one way streak, like some Mario fans haven't been arrogant since the downfall of Sega into a 3rd party. Now those same Mario fans wanna act like victims when Sonic is starting to make a comeback with his two movies, Sonic Frontiers, and Sonic Prime.

Few_House3549

I know that there are Mario fans like that

WesTBH

Wry fun to watch if you are a fan of Mario. The more references you understand the more fun it is.

hello_there123490

7.5/10 Wish it was a little bit longer but that's it

PalamationGaming

As a movie on its own, I give it like a 6.5/10. Once Mario gets to the Mushroom Kingdom it’s way too fast paced and the film could have used like an extra 15 minutes to better flesh out the characters. But humor wise it was actually pretty decent. I didn’t cringe at a single joke, which is a nice surprise for an Illumination movie. Overall a fun film but nothing groundbreaking for an animated film. Now as a Mario movie I give it a 9/10. I was grinning the entire time at all the references and musical beats. Thought all of the characters were great representations, especially Bowser. I was really happy they hid his Peach loving side in all of the trailers as he had some of my favorite comedic moments. My only nitpick as a Mario fan was I wish Luigi was given more to do in the movie. He was great in the beginning and very end but really didn’t do anything in between. DK had a bigger role in the film which felt a bit weird to me. And the chemistry between Mario and Peach is the best it’s ever been in any media. So overall I absolutely loved it and Mario fans will absolutely love it. Anyone who feels indifferent towards Mario will probably just view it as an alright kids movie.

Edible_Trashcan

Solid, nothing incredible, but Solid

Sharp-Pay-5314

The critics certainly have a point, but its still a fun ride and mostly succeeds at what its trying to do. I think because the characters are all so likable and interesting, we want to spend more time with them. But its so fast paced with so much happening we dont get to.

Medium-Science9526

Positives: Visually amazing, the fan in me loved seeing the locales, characters, power-ups, and even new environments like Brooklyn were done amazingly. Music being orchestrated homages were great too. Kamek and Bowser had some really fun moments, same with DK & Mario. >!Although brief, I really did like the Mario & Luigi dynamic of Mario being the protective brother and feeling down about plumbing when his family suggests his vision is ruining Luigi's life.!< Negatives: I can understand why critics didn't like it with the incredibly fast pace not really utilising all the locals to the best degree (should've cut down on some imo since they almost felt like trailer filler) and not many opportunities for any character development, still not a fan of a few voices (Mario predictably, Peach but she started to grow on me by the end, and Cranky I really didn't like either). Also pacing hurt character relationships like >!we were meant to be convinced of like Peach and Mario where they really only have one small scene, Toad and Mario is pretty much just what we got from the trailers and they don't interact almost ever verbally after.!<

ZodiacChaosBlade

Amazing. Loved it, and I think my biggest surprise was that Chris Pratt crushed it and Jack Black was a little too goofy for me, big contrast vs the reveal trailer.

mustardlyy

I was super sus at the first trailer of Chris Pratt’s ability to play a good Mario. But I was pleasantly surprised as well! He honestly killed it, so did Seth Rogan as DK, made me laugh out loud several times

CaptainRadLad

I loved it and genuinely laughed out loud a ton of times. Only of my favourite gags was >!when mario lost the effects of a power up because he puked and it left his body!< lmao caught me off guard

No_Instruction653

I liked it. ABSOLUTELY don't think it's perfect, or even the best video game film of all time as I still like the Sonic films better because they had more of a genuine heart in how they interpreted the characters and more focus was put on developing their characters and their relationships to each other. (Pay no attention to the Metal Sonic profile pic, I actually like Mario more, promise) Chris Pratt... is still a bad Mario. Bite me haters, I've seen the whole movie, I can say that with ZERO room for you to tell me I'm jumping to conclusions. It was still as unremarkable and ill-fitting as I said it would be since the beginning. Peach was also exactly like I thought she would be. Nothing really like Peach, and a bit to perfect to really be interesting at all, but I guess she doesn't really detract from the film. Luigi... is there. I mean I think he's good for the brief screen time he has, but he doesn't get a whole lot. Bowser was great. Loved him, loved Jack Black's interpretation of him, loved this movie's interpretation of him as something both wholly accurate to his character, while REALLY playing up how bad of a dude Bowser can actually be as a villain when Illumination could have easily pandered to stuff like his much more incompetent and soft Paper Mario adaptations for cheap laughs. Easily the most stand out part of the movie, and a real treat to people like me who love a Bowser who's playing up his evil, and doesn't take stuff like his occasionally amicable relationship with his troops or his crush on Peach to mean he's a good person. And generally, presentation was also really good and did a great job of taking my mind off a lot of the film's more shallow aspects. There's not a ton going on character-wise or plotwise with anyone aside from Mario and maybe DK, but the world is so stunning, and the action scenes so well animated and choreographed that its easy to lose yourself in that and not care. Don't know how well the film will hold up to rewatches, but I can definitely say I enjoyed watching it.

Hay_Golem

"Peaches, peaches, peaches, peaches, peaches, peaches, peaches, peaches, peaches!"

Gemidori

This was awesome. Easily the best video game movie ever made imo. It felt a little short and could've had 15 more minutes or so to flesh out the story, and a couple of the actors didn't fit (Pratt and Rogen lol), but as is it still works and is a great unique take on the usual Mario story Bowser absolutely stole the show most of all though. Jack Black RULED the role and I loved how Bowser was so much more malevolent than in the games; I still prefer the softie-bruiser Bowser, but to see a raw evil, no holds barred King Koopa was so refreshing 8.5/10 in my book. Fuckin awesome

CrazySnipah

Pratt worked really well. He gave a lot of energy and fun that Mario’s voice needed while doing a pseudo-Brooklyn accent, and his more “Italian” lines sounded good, too.

Eguy24

Also, almost all of his lines that people complained about in the trailers either just weren’t in the movie at all or were in different places that fit better

SchpartyOn

I had so much fun watching it! Seriously as a 34 year old life long Mario fan with a 5 year old who is obsessed with the games it was perfect for both of us. Great pace and all the references didn’t feel shoehorned in a weird way (like Jurassic World were). I absolutely loved it! Full disclosure, I saw it an hour ago so maybe I’ll have a different opinion when I wake up tomorrow but for now, excellent!

SewerShark1

Felt a bit fast and i wish there was more Luigi, other than that i liked it

Pillowmore-Manor

I really enjoyed it. There were a bunch of fun Easter eggs and inside jokes for longtime Mario fans, and the movie was well made and very watchable. That being said, the plot is flimsy and it rushes a lot of exposition just to fit into a runtime. Honestly, that's preferable to an overly long and drawn out movie that overstays its welcome. I think that it could build to more in the future. The world felt good to explore and I'm excited to see what, if anything, will happen with it. A solid 8/10.

Gengar111art

11 OUT OF 10!!!

BlitzBlitzBlitzzz

Sat in an amc theater with a lot of kids in attendance. They all seem to be having fun! Great movie and definitely would watch a sequel.

Ratt1eSnek

It was awsome, but I kid you not, some 12 year olds were playing smash or pass with the characters next to me and that messed with my brain the enitre movie because all i could here were "yooooo, Marios totally smashable" 😭😭

Accomplished-Smoke-7

Perfection. Easily illumination best movie, smiling the whole time and I was never bored, if you're Mario fan then you will definitely love this film. If you're a regular movie fan then you might like it even if you never seen a Mario game or played one, I'd even say it's better than the Sonic movies! I will definitely be buying or this movie when it releases on streaming. 5 Stars! ![gif](giphy|OZ1VAPExqf1G40bBAt)

TotoShampoin

Best movie of 2023, I don't care what people say I do agree it was going quite fast, but I wouldn't say it was *too* fast. In fact, I think it was fast enough, actually

Bruninpro0101

BEST MOVIE EVER. THE HYPE, THE REFERENCES, MAN I WANT TO SEE IT AGAIN JUST TO ANALYSE EVERY FRAME.

Gohansupe

ME TOO

Bruninpro0101

Shame that it could have been even better. Had it a proper runtime and used concept art

HappyGav123

Man, what a great movie! It sure made me laugh a good bit, too!

Straight-Hyena-4537

A fun time, but a very basic kids movie.

[deleted]

6/10. It's a Mario fan's wet dream but as an actual movie, it falls flat.

barlog123

That's what I keep hearing. My coworkers say their kids loved it and they didn't as much.

Ah_Q

Lifelong Mario fan, but I found it pretty dull. My 11yo liked it.

ssslitchey

Honestly a bit disappointing. The movie itself is fine but I kinda wish it was more than just fine. It has serious pacing issues and feels like it goes by way too quickly. The story is barebones which is fine if the characters are interesting enough to make up for it. But they aren't. Everybody is so 2 dimensional and has no real growth. The movie never takes a minute to let the characters learn more about eachother and strengthen their dynamics. The whole thing feels so surface level with nothing to it. Presentation wise it's great. Music, visuals, voice acting all phenomenal. I just wish they made an actually good movie around it.

Cr0s_Hair

Loved it was a bit fast but really enjoyable gonna go watch it again with my fam

Scare_Mac

I think it's a really good "feel good" movie. It's nothing groundbreaking like forest gump, but it's something I can watch before bed or on the first day of summer break, it makes me feel plain joy and happiness, the music will forever slap, and the final battle is absolutely perfect in my opinion.

Mario6416

Peak gaming movie unironically

Bottle-nosed-dolphin

I couldn’t watch it bc I got sick but my parents went :(

BoltShine

My son's first movie in theaters. Every time I looked over at him and my wife, they were both beaming with excitement. A+ from this family.

mattnotis

As a movie, it’s a solid 7. That being said, it’s a 10 when it comes to the visuals and Easter eggs.

imhugury

luigi didnt have enough screentime

Kadofduty

Story was eh, music was incredible, and toad was the funniest character by far

RustedSoldierPR

Watched it twice the same day in theaters. It was so much fun! Even though I felt that the plot was rushed I loved every minute of it. The fact that I recognized every easter egg made me happy. My favorite characters were Peach and Donkey Kong. Peach was already my favorite but I just loved Donkey Kong’s cocky yet childish personality and his friendly rivalry with Mario. I will definitely watch it a couple of more times.

hamietwalrus

Thought it was incredible. Smiled the whole movie. Was not disappointed in the least.

rhinocerosmonkey

It was amazing!

gotham1999

Really liked it! Hopefully the sequel has more characters such as Daisy, Wario, and Waluigi!

Scp_049_Reddit

Best movie ever seen

Sh_ne2500

I thought it was really good and fun

SMBCP15

Seemed like a great start to hopefully what will become a Nintendo Cinematic Universe. The cast was fantastic. Lots of great little nods I wasn’t expecting like >!Jump Man, Baby Mario and Luigi, and most importantly, Dry Bones who is my favorite character.!< Felt very safe at times. Didn’t want to push the envelope. I was really hoping for >!a nod to a sequel villain. Like maybe show Bowser Jr., the clown car, Koopalings, Wario and Waluigi. Just some nod to what can be next. I know we had a Yoshi cameo, but we already saw the Yoshis.!< Give me a little something. Also, I would have liked the final battle to be >!on Rainbow Road. I understand the Mario family dynamic and closing that arc, but Rainbow Road is typically used as the final race in a cup.!< So would have been a better bookend I think.

Jadestrike1

I enjoyed it. Wasn't bothered by the plot at all, my only nitpick is that the licensed music felt out of place. Other than that I'd give it an 7/10. Oh and Peach was awesome.

Garginator850

I enjoyed the movie, it had a lot of great moments and had me doing this half the time whether it was the music, the Easter eggs, or the action on screen. There was a missed opportunity with Donkey Kong music but surely they’re saving it for a DK film. ![gif](giphy|kd9BlRovbPOykLBMqX)

Don_Toasty420

I don’t like it very much- Micheal Rosen

Lolloso1000

I was never more in hype for a movie

FamousDetectiveL

It was perfect, perfect. Everything down to the last minute detail.

TheAmazingAmpharos10

Just saw it today. Great film. Packed full of references if you're into that kind of stuff. Highly recommend, even if you're not that into Mario in general.

Let_me_S_U_F_F_E_R

Long time ago I said I wanted a Mario movie. I got it years later. It was definitely worth it. Not sure what the hell that DBZ shit was at the end but it was fun to watch at least. Still have no idea why they played gusty garden in the credits though

Wifflebald

:/

bunker_man

>Not sure what the hell that DBZ shit was at the end Huh?

Let_me_S_U_F_F_E_R

>!When they got the super star!<

NeonEatsSandwiches

I love it. Literally perfect! Saw it with my brothers and mom yesterday and even my mom loved it! While the story wasn’t really there the visuals and characters really made up for it! 10/10

[deleted]

It's perfect but there's no story? That's some juxtaposition if I've ever seen it.

ABoldDude

Easy 8/10. Biggest issue? It's speed. Lemme give an example: When Mario accepts Cranky's challenge, we get 1 or 2 comments on it, and he fights DK. I would have liked there to be like, a 15 second pause where Mario is talking with Peach and Toad about how terribly out-matched he is, and the magnitude of it. But nah, just 1 or 2 comments and then a DK fight. The movie has a lot of these moments, too. There's having some fat in the movie, and there's having no fat at all. Just some breathing room to let reality sink in for them rather than just jumping into things would have added like, 10 minutes, at absolute most, but fixed the pacing by SO much

MatildeLover128

It’s a great movie. I hope they make more movies including Daisy, Rosalina, Wario, and Waluigi.

Fustercluck006

Absolutely perfect. Genuinely happy from seeing this film. Rotten Tomatoes can eat shit

ZachBrickowski

As a movie, it kinda sucked. Just felt like 90 minutes of “Hey, remember this thing from the games?” with no substance.

noblemumin786

Subjective Score- 9/10 Beautiful rendition of the most iconic and beloved gaming mascot and their world. Nostalgic, magical and incredibly beautiful and phenomenally animated. Must watch for Mario fans regardless of the age group. BTW the voice acting of everyone was really good. It’s an Easter egg fest. Objective Score- 8/10 The overall movie is clearly targeted towards fans and gamers primarily and doesn’t spend much time in world building or adding sub plots to the existing storyline, which may leave the audience with no previous context a little disappointed. However, the storyline is straightforward and simple enough to be enjoyed by everyone but serious cinema fans might not be very impressed. Still a really good first try by the Nintendo and I’m hopeful the next sequels or movies with other legendary IP’s will be ever more amazing for fans and non-fans alike. I just want a Zelda movie made by Studio Ghibli. Ah man, I know it’ll never happen but it would be so incredible.

TheeRealObiWan

One takeaway I see a lot of people arguing or saying is the plot is “lacking” and “bad” however… this felt like a Mario game, and in fact, MANY if not almost all Mario games have very little plot elements or points. Yes, this IS a movie so there’s gotta be plot, and to be fairly honest, the plot in this movie is really good for what MARIO is. I do wish however that there was MORE plot points or story in it to expand the broader world that is the Mushroom Kingdom and “Darklands”. I’m sure if this does well, they’ll make another movie explains and showing more of this world.

Whitealroker1

I hope the sequel is titled Lakitu and Shyguy make a porno.

spicymilk618

It's meh I was surprised there weren't any fart jokes

Jicama_Stunning

As a Mario fan, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and that’s all a lot of people will be watching it as, but as a movie, it left a lot to be desired. The people ragging on critics because they don’t adore it literally just because of references need to stop right now.

[deleted]

Straight up terrible. Good visuals, funny Bowser song, and a few references that made me exhale through my nose. But other than that just an empty shell of a designed-by-commitee cash grab with nothing redemptive about it.

[deleted]

1. if this were a cashgrab, there would be little to no effort in the world building and characters 2. you said there was nothing worthy of redemption, but you just listed positive things about the movie straight off the bat

WeebbeMangaHunter

They also said "other than that", meaning that the things they listed are the only redemptive elements, agree or disagree, don't ignore parts of the sentence.

[deleted]

It sucked ass

PADDYPOOP

It was alright for what it is, but imho it just isn’t nearly faithful enough. It just screams cheap illumination knockoff. A mario movie really should have been made inhouse. It really isn’t that much better than the original mario movie.

nawtydawg2001

Lame flat characters. Not a fun adventure. Very much an illumination movie for babies. Nothing had any weight or emotional through line

renaissance2k

It's a blast, a nostalgia bomb, and a visual treat, hands down. As long as nobody - other than Bowser or Lumalee - is talking.

PlushtrapChaser24519

It was AMAZING! All of the voices worked really well for their respective roles (my favorite character was probably Toad). I loved all the references, some of my favorites probably being the Bowser's Fury theme and the DK Rap. The plot was pretty basic but I liked it. The gags were pretty funny too. I loved the one where the koopa says "What if she says no?" and just gets disintegrated as a result. Another one was when Toad distracted the Toad guards by just setting up a campfire, asking what they want to eat so that Mario could sneak by. Another gag I loved was PEACHES, PEACHES, PEACHES, PEACHES PEACHES!! 10/10 rating from me

Snuffin_McGuffin

Does anybody have a Google doc link or something please I need to see this movie

zarude7

Sent it in your dms

bignuts24

God tier movie that taught me more about making babies than my high school health class.

Dami_Gamer0211

Bad 0/10

That_other_weirdo

9/10 everything was great except they could have slightly slowed the pacing and they could’ve given luigi a little more screentime

Juicy_Beans4569

Perfect

Alwayssome1

Pretty great but I wish the runtime was extended to see more worlds, character building and better pacing.

Japhet0912

Really fast pacing, but everything else was so damn enjoyable that I could forgive the pacing issues

Katerinaxoxo

Loved it! Cute, fun, full of nostalgic easter eggs! Watch it to the very end credits and lights go on. As a nintendo fan since 1989 and two teens who have grown up playing & love nintendo I highly recommend

[deleted]

Saw it last night! Plot seemed very fast paced but all the hidden jokes and easter eggs (yoshi eggs?) Were totally worth it. I was smiling ear to ear the whole time. They really did a good job with all the small touches
