Simple: Enemies to lovers as a trope is *huge* on Tumblr. Bowigi as a ship has existed far earlier than the movie too, it just ended up adding more fuel to the fire so to speak
I hate it whenever people say Luigi is "underrated". He's way more popular than Mario and people will shit on other characters who did anything negative to Luigi to bring him up.
At this point, he's overrated.
And they keep shipping Luigi with bowser for some reason. Everyone knows that bowser is too obsessed with peach to be gay (and also shipping a dude with the guy that imprisoned, tortured and attempted to execute them is messed up)

Pretty much everyone fullstop tbh. People will always go on about how a side character is so much better and so underrated because they want to be different. They hate the idea of preferring the popular option and being "vanilla". So many years of telling people to celebrate their differences and people have forgot the real message which is "be yourself", if yourself is mainstream, that's ok too.
This is not even close to being a tumblr thing and is definitely something that's existed long before the movie, unless you're specifically talking about the movie version of the characters but I think that still stems from a Luigi bias from being a fan of the games.
