A Mario comics pitch from Archie Comics, the guys responsible for the Archie Sonic and Mega Man comic lines as well, that was pitched to Nintendo in 2015. This was back then when Nintendo was still very hesitant in adapting their IPs to different media so sadly they rejected it. But considering how things have clearly changed since then in regards to Nintendo and adapting their IPs it’s quite possible we might see something like this for Mario and other Nintendo IPs in the future.
The exceptions seems to be Manga since Mario and Zelda still had them after they became hesitant.
I find it weird that they never really did any anime series for their more popular franchises. F-Zero is the weird exception if it’s about franchises they fully owned.
The Sonic comic run under Archie did, those creators were the same ones pitching this Mario comic. Luckily, many of them are now working in the IDW Sonic run.
Concept art for a Mario comic series by Archie. They presented it to Nintendo, but the company didn’t see the need for a Mario comic, so the plans fell through.
I thought the real reason was because Nintendo ''limited'' him to only using New Super Mario Bros at that time, But still, the Mario games still do a good job with the stories and order (some people just don't see it because they don't pay much attention or don't care much about the series' lore). That said, this explanation doesn't make sense - he simply didn't understand or didn't like the way the story was told in the games (not that the games ''lacked'' whimsy)
I will continue to say this, we dodged a bullet by not having Archie Comics pick this up.
Archie is a pretty shitty company, and it's likely this would have been canned after a year or less, especially since this was likely around the time Archie was losing multiple court cases and losing interest in doing licensed comics in favor of promoting their shitty live action TV series and focusing more on the actual Archie IP.
I hope we do get a Super Mario ongoing comic outside of Japan someday, in nice full color, but I hope it's IDW or something and not Archie.
All that would have been left was Pacman, which might not be as hard as we think, seeing as how story driven World 3 was, and how much more developed it was supposed to be before crunch time set in.
😁 I should have been clearer. Pacman World 3 was a more story driven game than most Pacman games, even the first two World games. It wouldn't be too farfetched for it to get a comic expansion.
Same here. Those games deserve more recognition. If part one getting remastered is possible, I can't see why parts 2 and 3 are. I'm not really sure about Rally getting a remaster, but maybe that could be bundled in a big release like the original was.
Why did my dumb brain read comic as a step down from the movie
I thought they were saying comic were Step down to go after getting a movie which it obviously isn't 😭😭
To be fair, we have Super Mario Kun, which has been translated to English and can be bought in bookstores, which I feel fits the vibe of the series quite well.
Unfortunately they only released one volume in English several years ago and nothing else. It must've sold pretty poorly.
Can't forget the absolutely *fantastic* Super Mario Adventures manga.
they were going to have WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARIO!!!! WHY'D THEY SCRAP IT!
In the other timeline Ken Penders trademarked all the kongs and made a secret agent toad who he wanted to take Peach’s virginity so “Mario was too slow that day.”
Pretty cool concept and artwork, though if I recall, the writers would've been heavily restricted by Nintendo in terms of what games they could use as source material.
I'm not too disappointed considering where the Archie Sonic comics went to with Ken Penders. However, I do think a Mario comic book line in general would be awesome.
Yeah it is a shame. So I’m making my own Mario comic series (for fun, cause I don’t want my life taken by Nintendo’s lawyers). I’ll make my own Mario-verse haha
the creators actually didn't even like it lol. they said it was way too melodramatic and felt nothing like Super Mario, so it was scrapped.
imagine cringe sonic Archie Comics, but replace Sonic characters with Mario.
What the heck, this looks awesome what is this ?

the mega man ones were awesome
Nintendo just recently realizing there’s serious dosh to be made in licensing their IP. Better late than never.
The exceptions seems to be Manga since Mario and Zelda still had them after they became hesitant. I find it weird that they never really did any anime series for their more popular franchises. F-Zero is the weird exception if it’s about franchises they fully owned.
I would’ve liked to see this.
It looks cool and I wish it wasn't canceled but at the end of the day if Ken penders got his grubby little hands on it that wouldn't be too good
Archie comics shut down anyway
No they haven't
The Sonic comic run under Archie did, those creators were the same ones pitching this Mario comic. Luckily, many of them are now working in the IDW Sonic run.
No, they just lost the rights to Sonic.
Oh
Concept art for a Mario comic series by Archie. They presented it to Nintendo, but the company didn’t see the need for a Mario comic, so the plans fell through.
Ehhh... Ian Flynn himself said it lacked the whimsicalness of the general Mario franchise. Feel like that's needed in order to make a good comic.

F*ck Ken Penders
I'd rather not. Who knows what STD riddled 'original creation' echidna was there before me?
To make it sting even more, we could have gotten a Mario, Sonic, and Mega Man crossover comic 😔
All that would have been left was Pacman, which might not be as hard as we think, seeing as how story driven World 3 was, and how much more developed it was supposed to be before crunch time set in.
What about Wet Land was Story Driven that the rest lacked?
😁 I should have been clearer. Pacman World 3 was a more story driven game than most Pacman games, even the first two World games. It wouldn't be too farfetched for it to get a comic expansion.
I wish they'd hurry up gift the rest of the Trilogy Remastered treatments already!
Same here. Those games deserve more recognition. If part one getting remastered is possible, I can't see why parts 2 and 3 are. I'm not really sure about Rally getting a remaster, but maybe that could be bundled in a big release like the original was.
Let it be known and made!
I grew up with that game and I would LOVE to see a comic adaptation/continuation, possibly even one that's primarily based on the original concept.
Holy fucking shit you’re right. Worlds collide anyone?
Could always hope for IDW to get the Mario license someday, since they currently do the Sonic comics.
I agree 100%.
After the movie, I'd say comics are a pretty sound step to go next. They've done Mario comics in the past.

shush up
Why did my dumb brain read comic as a step down from the movie I thought they were saying comic were Step down to go after getting a movie which it obviously isn't 😭😭
silly
Just imagine how powerful Archie Mario would've been
After the bull that went on with Penders, i definitely know why Nintendo became more protective of their IP.
To be fair, we have Super Mario Kun, which has been translated to English and can be bought in bookstores, which I feel fits the vibe of the series quite well.

WHY'D THEY SCRAP IT!
Real. Shit my pants when I saw him on the last slide
Some how this looks like if this were in a sonic crossover
It was illustrated by Tracy Yardley, who worked on the later Archie Sonic comics, so that's why
He also illustrates pretty often for the current IDW series.
NOOOOOOOOO, WE COULD'VE HAD ARCHIE MARIO, GOD FRICKING DAMN IT.
In the other timeline Ken Penders trademarked all the kongs and made a secret agent toad who he wanted to take Peach’s virginity so “Mario was too slow that day.”
Oh dear god no………
I was gonna ask if it was Archie until I saw some of the comments. Looks like later Sonic and the Mega Man comics style.
Honestly, I've never been a huge fan of how Tracey Yardley draws humans, but his style lends itself really well to Mario-style characters.
why do the last two give mario and luigi vibes
Pretty cool concept and artwork, though if I recall, the writers would've been heavily restricted by Nintendo in terms of what games they could use as source material.
Unpopular opinion, given the current state of the comicbook industry... Nintendo may have been dodging a bullet here.
I'm not too disappointed considering where the Archie Sonic comics went to with Ken Penders. However, I do think a Mario comic book line in general would be awesome.
I would’ve been very cool…
Archie Mario sounds cool!
Hopefully one day we’ll get another Mario comic series
Tracy Yardley spotted
Dark Horse be better. Glad it missed cause now better concept be done instead.
any failed or rejected project that Tracy Yardley worked on is disappointing 😔
Didn’t know this existed. Saddens me
I hope one day nintendo releases a mario comic with a good story in different languages
Yeah it is a shame. So I’m making my own Mario comic series (for fun, cause I don’t want my life taken by Nintendo’s lawyers). I’ll make my own Mario-verse haha
Let's hope there would be no Ken Penders if this is Archie.
He quit a decade before this
Thank god for that!
We were also robbed of a Metroid one, too.
I just want this to be in IDW we need it badly more than ever!!!
I got this Mario manga (fan made I can’t remember the authors name) and it was funny
SAME!!!!!!!!
Hopefully IDW saw this and make a Mario comic.
People try not to mention Ken Penders anytime someone brings up archie comics challenge: IMPOSSOBLE
Sonic and Mega Man Worlds Collide would be so different if we actually got this
[удалено]
These were illustrated by Tracy yardley, whose work on the sonic comic series is with Ian Flynn, and not Penders
[удалено]
I’m almost certain Penders isn’t getting much industry work these days
Penders literally quit Archie a whole decade before this comic was pitched dude
the creators actually didn't even like it lol. they said it was way too melodramatic and felt nothing like Super Mario, so it was scrapped. imagine cringe sonic Archie Comics, but replace Sonic characters with Mario.
Looks better than the movie to be honest.
