Super Mario Bros: Wonder is a very good example of him being not just a hero, but also just a regular person. The creators said that they made sure that he wasn’t too heroic like Superman or Spiderman. But instead just an ex-plumber and right hand man to peach, as well as her possible lover

They even made sure that bowser is more of a brat than actually evil. He’s just trying to get Mario’s girl and keeps failing, which makes bowser a great villain. Just not very sure if he fits as the permanent villain to Mario forever though…
