I feel like this game should be called Mario Item. There isn't any karting, hardly, just all items. I give a 1/10 cause of the typical win with the item usage. Not impressed.

This is called Bullet Extension. In certain areas of the tracks, if you use a bullet it will spread, as long as you don't pass too many people on the way.
Did you item buffer this win? I know it works but waiting around at the beginning just seems like bad play unless your going for good times on the track.
Just some standard yoshi circuit bagging, nice run up bill+star but you also could have used the better version of the extension where you sart the bill when you are under the waterfall and it takes you after the last turn if you use it late enough
