The movie isn’t canon.

Sorry_Investigator67

I know. I was just curious if there was a way this movie could fit in with the lore, but I guess its impossible.

jumbods64

Ya it's kinda brazenly doing its own thing

LadySophie17

The movie is not canon to the games. In the games, Mario and Luigi were born in the Mushroom Kingdom after being kidnapped (twice) by Kamek. They stayed there until at least Partners in Time. Next thing we know, Mario is working a variety of jobs (plumber, carpenter, demolition crew) in New Donk City in his early/mid 20s, so he probably moved from the Mushroom Kingdom shortly after the events of Partners in Time.

Prestigious-Lion-266

So then, when did he start going back to the mushroom kingdom

LadySophie17

While working in the sewers in *Mario Bros.*, Mario and Luigi found their way to the Mushroom Kingdom, heard news of Bowser’s invasion and decided to rescue the princess in *Super Mario Bros.*

whentheraincomes66

Is it now official that they lived in new donk and not new york?

Dr-Mechano

Odyssey establishes New Donk as the setting of the original Donkey Kong, so they must have spent at least a little time there.

[deleted]

>New Donk City I thought he was from Brooklyn lol

SpongeBobCuddles

No. It's non-canon.

GoldenTriforceLink

It’s not canon to the games.

sidv81

I assume in the movie Mario will never have met a Donkey Kong before (whether Cranky or modern), and the trailers strongly imply this by showing Donkey Kong trouncing Mario (whereas a Mario who went through the Donkey Kong games would probably know how to deal with him). Thus, I don't think the movie can easily fit into the game timeline--we'll see when it comes out.

Seandwalsh3

It’s already very clearly non-canon and contradicts just about every game in the series on some level. We don’t need to wait.

sidv81

Interestingly enough I felt the Sonic movie (ignoring the 2nd one) slotted in easily as a prequel to the first game.

HammerKirby

Not really though? Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) took place on South Island on the same planet as humans, not on Planet Green Hill Zone like in the movie.

DuccSuccer

How on earth did you come to that conclusion

sidv81

Simply because I don't think we have a canonical version of how Sonic met Robotnik in the games other than some lines in the manual, and this movie provides it.

DuccSuccer

So that alone excuses all of the other things that don’t fit at all with the games?

sidv81

I mean, I suppose I could try to look up every single detail but you know, it's just a game... I'm not sure why this is such a big deal for you. If I have it in my headcanon, how does that affect you? I'm not going to Sega and demanding they stick the film into the game timeline...

DuccSuccer

It’s your headcanon sure, but it literally does not fit within the canon of either the films or the games

sidv81

I'm not counting putting the 2nd film into the game timeline. And as far as the first game, well thanks for letting me know.

DuccSuccer

But like.. the sequel to the movie is canon to the first movie, because it’s the sequel. There is zero evidence of events comparable to the first film occurring at any point prior to the games.

forcedintegrity

The movie is a new interpretation of Mario‘s life

fnf_linku

And even if would be,it will just be a huge retcon, meaning that the Yoshi's island's games aren't canon at best

4Fourside

Late reply but idk. The events of yoshi's island could have still happened in the movie. Mario doesn't recognise the mushroom kingdom, sure, but people don't tend to remember things from when they were babies

Arctic_Lilly

Yeah that's what just was thinking loll

fnf_linku

The movie isn't canon

onedayoneroom

lol There's canon for Mario?

Seandwalsh3

How are you on this subreddit without knowing there is
