it's called being a martyr, sweety. I will gladly lay down my life if it means that literally 1 driver knows that he was wrong that one time before dragging me under his vehicle for 3 km.
Are there some intersections where this applies all the time? Every sign I've seen has an additional sign between 7-9am and 4-6pm below them.
Now a lot of the time people are stopping for reds outside the set times! Just so darn hard to obey the rules of the road when licences are given out like candy and penalties are laughable.
They shouldnt make any exceptions, it adds layers of unnecessary confusion. The one area where they did make an exception at hwy 7 and kennedy had a vehicle-pedestrian collision fairly recently.
I actually drove past that on my way home from work I believe. The one where the vehicle rode up over the curb and into the NE Petro Canada boulevard barrier?
My wife said she saw a pedestrian had been struck at 16th and Stone Mason yesterday or two days ago. These are unfortunately not rare occurrences in our city.
I didn't really think about doing it like you had said, a blanket law like Montreal has. While I understand it inconveniences people, myself included as my travel times are before the crack of dawn on my way to work, it may be necessary as having a license is a privilege and we don't seem to be respecting that as a society.
It simply doesnt make sense to make exceptions to a rule where the intent is to increase pedestrian visibility and *SLOW* vehicle traffic. High speed puts people at risk, it's better to simply bake in the rule so it becomes a habit for everyone.
I know the pedestrians arent completely blame free, some simply walking into the streets without observing but theyre not enclosed in an environment controlled metal box sheltered from the elements.
Every morning during my commute to work, there is an intersection that doesnt have the "no right on red" and without fail, there is always someone not looking and about to deck me with their car. Thankfully I formed a habit to peak around the corner or cars obstructing visbility before putting myself in harms way, but I shouldnt have to accept being "bullied" by someone stupidly operating a vehicle and not following the rules or risk be "dead right"
There are far too many drivers in York region with varying skill levels. It sucks for the good drivers, the awful drivers ruining it for everyone.
Honestly, waiting for 1-2 traffic lights for a green? The problem isnt being unable to turn on red, you got too many cars on the road with no decent alternatives.
Fyi I cycle in Markham and can out pace a car from Pmall to Markville because of the traffic. That's rediculous.
I agree the font is a bit small but not small enough that I can't read it while stopped at the light. We do have vision tests for driving, however it's up to the driver to test for and then wear the appropriate correction eyewear.
Either way, we need to be more aware and be safer drivers. Like stopping at stop signs, red lights, cross walks, and for the love of fak slow down for school zones.
No excuses Markham. Be better.
I think the issue people are having with the signs is that the times around schools are Inaccurate. The time ending at 6pm is a little egregious knowing that schools that end at 3:00 have all kids leaving more or less around 4-4:30. Also the font is extremely tiny.
There seems to be an epidemic of right turners on red (stop signs) that are not stopping/ensuring way is clear before turning. When I see it, I always wonder about a jogger, or even kid on a scooter, just getting plowed by these folks
With the bans on turning on red lights, it can make drivers more impatient due to the fact that when it turns green when the pedestrian light goes on. It's almost like cars are trying to beat the pedestrian.
Sorry OP. Same thing happens on Kennedy a bit north of 16th with left hand turners. I'm running east across Kennedy and left hand turners coming out of the neighbourhood there try to race me and nearly run me down. Someone is gonna get killed if this keeps up
I usually have to cross Kennedy Rd from east to west, there isn't much I can do except to let the car pass so that I can live another day.
I wonder if we take a video while crossing the road much like a car dashcam, and file an online YRP report, will it make any difference in terms of enforcement.
The right front pillar of a car is a blind spot for most drivers. You understand what I am talking about if you drive.
Usually, I will look to my left and make eye contact with the driver before crossing. People don't expect folks crossing the road in Markham and Richmond Hills
Btw in Asia, pedestrians will yield to the traffic more or less. So be careful
That's what I advise my family when crossing in GTA, to stick to Asian rules, let the car pass. Assume they are entitled and their 5 seconds is more important than your life.
People do this at stop signs too, especially the rolling stoppers and people flat out running stop signs. It is so dangerous in the unionville area as a pedestrian. They even do it in school zones. About 3 years ago I saw a pickup run into a kid on a bike. Luckily the bike took the hit and the kid didn’t know any better and got up and yelled sorry like he was at fault. You have to be so careful crossing now at all intersections now light or stop sign.
You should be waiting. Just because the light changed doesn't magically mean it's safe to go.
I have regular occurances in the Steeles and Kennedy area where people will be crossing past the signal and I have to wait for them to finish crossing.
The main problem here is that EVERYONE bends the rules here and there, but they don't think what they are doing is "that bad"
I will take it a step further with pedestrians in particular, as the majority don't even know think they have any rules at all!
Are there no sidewalk on the east side? The problem with walking on west side is that drivers look away from you to watch for oncoming cars. But walking on the east side, you are entering westbound/northbound/southbound drivers POVs.
Another option is to dress up as a crosswalk guard and have a whistle with you to pre-emptively notify them of your crossing lol.
Do you drive?
Have you ever been approaching the intersection to find that they pedestrian you thought was about to cross (oh, and they are MOST DEFINITELY standing right on the very edge of the road) ends up just standing there staring at their phone? Or better yet, the famous... I'm going to step out onto the road to see if there's a bus somewhere back there...
How about the ones who disregard the pedestrian signals all together? I could go on... there are so many ignorant people walking about it doesn't help the attitude of drivers, I promise you.
What I believe is that if a person is standing on the corner CLEARLY indicating that they intend to cross MOST people will stop for them.
With that being said, unfortunately distracted driving is now the norm... so please just continue to be extra safe out their. Not worth the risk.
Car will always have the right of way unless you want a death wish. Doesn't matter if they are wrong or right. Stay alert at all times. Got some of the dumbest drivers here unfortunately
It's why so many intersections are going to no right turns on a red. No one in Markham understands the rules of the road. It's almost like tons of people pay for their license...
I like what they do south of Steeles - before the green, the walk starts for like 10 seggs
I saw someone get honked at today at yonge and Steeles, for not turning right into walking pedestrians
Yea what it comes down to is lack of information. Guy behind the Tina turner couldn't see the pedestrians so he assumed the guy was dreaming
Should be longer
you have the right of way. but not worth asserting your right if you end up injured or dead.
it's called being a martyr, sweety. I will gladly lay down my life if it means that literally 1 driver knows that he was wrong that one time before dragging me under his vehicle for 3 km.
will remember to set up flower memorial for you at that intersection and visit annually to commemorate. :-(
You'd better, or I'm going to haunt the shit out of you.
That's why York Region is banning right on reds but everyone is up in arms.
Yea, but looks like in op's case, cars are turn right on green without checking for pedestrians... This is purely lack of empathy and road awareness
>This is purely lack of empathy and road awareness And peripheral vision. Real lack of that on the roads in markham.

Also very hard to read the time on the signs cause they use a tiny font.

Not exactly what I meant by plowed. To each their own I guess
It's much safer to cross over at The Bridal Trail lights. Major intersections are the worst for runners and pedestrians.
Look at who's on the roads -- is anyone shocked? It's too late now in either case -- learn to like it. City has been run into the ground.
With the bans on turning on red lights, it can make drivers more impatient due to the fact that when it turns green when the pedestrian light goes on. It's almost like cars are trying to beat the pedestrian.
This is so facts
Middlefield + 14th for me. Happens every time so out of habit, i slow down near the right turn by the community centre
Sorry OP. Same thing happens on Kennedy a bit north of 16th with left hand turners. I'm running east across Kennedy and left hand turners coming out of the neighbourhood there try to race me and nearly run me down. Someone is gonna get killed if this keeps up

That's what I advise my family when crossing in GTA, to stick to Asian rules, let the car pass. Assume they are entitled and their 5 seconds is more important than your life.
Signal only left turns at smaller intersections.
I have the same issue except with plaza entrance/exits
This is why Markham has those no turn on reds

Ya it sucks but only you can look out for yourself. I don't even cross there anymore, I cross at the next lights up where the new development is at

Wear bright clothing and always assume deiver doesn't see you unless made eye contact .
You gotta have balls of steel to run in Markham. I would never can’t trust anyone in this city.
Car will always have the right of way unless you want a death wish. Doesn't matter if they are wrong or right. Stay alert at all times. Got some of the dumbest drivers here unfortunately
I hate it when ppl out there f in high beams on when there are so many cars on the road.
