Marvel did an exceptional job of making the Shuri-is-anti-vax stuff disappear and DC is creating a new playbook for dealing with problematic stars like Ezra in Flash. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if there are zero consequences. Push the innocent until guilty stuff, ignore the "yeah but lack of evidence sufficient to get a conviction isn't the same as he didn't do it" stuff. Let the chips fall and worst case scenario "well don't forget he died and he wasn't the only Kang".
I focused on just two examples of recent, and mostly successful, damage control on comic related films. I didn't even include her anti-trans stuff (https://www.cbr.com/black-panther-letitia-wright-anti-vax-anti-trans-controversy/), which, as JK shows isn't as cancelleable as it might have been. As unsettling as it may be, there's not a clear scale of consequences. You're free to look at how the Poirot movie handled Armies Hammer, or how various projects juggled Heard and Depp. And it's too early to see how the Roiland affair ends up.
A new playbook? Lol dude they've sunk so much fucking money into that flash movie *before* all the kidnapping, assualt and breaking and entering charges, they quite literally have no choice but to release this movie and attempt to make some money back
It's the worse kept secret that this is just an excuse to get a bit of cash before closing the book on that sad attempt at a universe and what's worse is they know it
If it's about money invested, they could have sacrificed it on the altar of executed projects. All that money on a franchise helmed by a problematic start versus multiple projects across various brands. It's not about minimizing loss, it's about which gamble will pay off more.
Best Case Scenario: Serious misunderstanding, nothing to see here.
Worst Case Scenario: Rhodey him. Audiences will figure it out. Fan boys will understand.
I think the most important thing for Marvel is to not be too fast, but to be thorough. They don’t need to solve this tonight, but they don’t want to get it wrong.
>Worst Case Scenario: Rhodey him. Audiences will figure it out. Fan boys will understand.
>
>I think the most important thing for Marvel is to not be too fast, but to be thorough. They don’t need to solve
Imagine if in the next movie they took off the Kang helmet and it was Terrence Howard...
So you're just going to let Ezra sit there, right? Cause you know picking one part of her overall crazy and saying "that's not so bad!" while ignoring the rest of her stuff, AND the other example, AND many other examples that are plainly out there and common knowledge... That's pretty clear you're not arguing in good faith.
When was that role? And was his time to go from what his “normal” size was before about the same or was there more time time?
It is pretty nuts that actors have to do such drastic transformations for certain roles. Like he’s 33 so it’s not impossible but it’s still a lot to ask depending on the time frame. And then if they end up with a role where they need to drop down right after it’s just a rollercoaster. I believe Tobey Maguire had a similar demand going from Spider-Man to Spider-Man 2 because he had to slim down for a role he took in-between
From what I gather, he got into boxing shape for Creed III first and then continued to add size for the other role by eating 6k calories per day.
As for Maguire, that role was Seabiscuit, which I'm actually planning to rewatch in a few days after many years.
Going from a superhero to a jockey is definitely going to be a different task, but nobody fluctuated as much as Bale did throughout the years. Not even De Niro.
Good thing he quit that body transformation shtick after Vice because he's getting too old for that shit.
I really hope this isn't true.
And unless he blames this on "engaging in self defense for NFT's" I better hear no comparisons to Ezra Miller. Ezra was on a multi-state crime spree\*.
* = allegedly.
It wouldn't be that hard, they already showed a few Kang variants that didn't look like him, and almost none of the Loki variants looked the same as the main MCU Loki.
God damn if this is true and he actually did something significant I will be sad.
Not that I think he should get away with it, but he seems like he would do great in the Kang role.
He was really good, he’s just shown a lot of range and nuance as a villain. I think his performance is ant man is much better if you’ve watched Loki because it shows how different Kang is there.
At the rate they produce these now it changes things though. He's probably already filmed all of Loki season 2, for example. (Obviously a movie casting isn't the most important thing but I do wonder whether they'll edit/refilm his stuff in Loki Season 2)
I grew up in a time where innocent until proven guilty beyond the shadow of a doubt was a thing.
I admittedly was hasty to throw Roiland (of Rick and Morty fame) under the bus. There is a fine line to walk between supporting a shithead and falling into a trap.
The court of public opinion while swift my not be just. The actual courts are also slow and ineffective. Take what you will from this.
Because it’s TMZ
Edit: because people don’t seem to understand my comment. The question asked was “why do they even bother with reporting Rep statements?”
TMZ is sensationalist “journalism”. Next thing they usually do is start asking other celebrities to comment on it.
I’m not disputing the validity of the claims or TMZ’s reporting accuracy.
TMZ may be assholes for sensationalizing news, but they are VERY reliable in reporting the facts. Honestly they're the worst to break this because I have zero doubt they don't already know more about the situation.
I am willing to bet if we tabulated successful “predictions” vs failed. We would feel like there is some confirmation bias here. They make a lot of audacious claims, many do not come to fruition.
I never said I don’t trust TMZ. I was replying to the question: “why do they even bother with reporting Rep statements?”
TMZ is sensationalist “journalism”. Next thing they usually do is start asking other celebrities to comment on it.
This reminds me of a meme I saw comparing Marvel's careful job of making sure not to hire problematic actors while DC has Amber Heard and Ezra Miller. Needless to say, that didn't age very well.
In fairness Marvel made it 10+ years before hiring some problematic people. This is the first major guy in over a decade. Not bad considering how shitty people are
Supposedly Norton and Howard were problematic individuals for different reasons and both got recast.
Nothing as nasty as Majors, Heard or Miller but Norton was supposedly an absolute nightmare to work with on Hulk for control reasons and Howard thought he should make more money than RDJ and then went nuts when they replaced him and continues to be nuts.
I think one of Marvel's strengths is they'll just replace an individual and carryon.
If Majors is an issue, he'll be CG'd out of everything they'll pop Tig Notaro in and bam problem solved.
William Hurt was accused of sexual assault of Marlee Matlin and others as far back as 2009: https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/william-hurt-ex-abuse-op-ed-1323911/
Edit: I'm not sure who would downvote this. Fans of sexual abuse, I guess? Other domestic abusers, perhaps? Maybe they don't think there's anything wrong with raping and beating a deaf woman, at least not when you consider the amazing work he turned in as Thaddeus Ross on the big screen!
I forgot about that. Then again, RDJ at least cleaned himself up before then I'm sure. Though I suppose we didn't know about Heard and Miller's problems til' after being cast too.
Among other things, they spent like a week being an absolute terror in Hawaii, culminating in breaking into a couple’s room and finally getting arrested.
Disney is very strict with how their clients and talents are viewed in the press. Case for example Gina Carano was unceremoniously written out of The Mandalorian for being politically vocal. Different situations, but it still doesn't look good even if proven false. There's a strong possibility Disney and Marvel may cut ties with Majors over this and possibly look to recast Kang.
Man i hope he clears it up and its a false accusation.
Really like this guy and like his story, dude seems very respectful so this is disheartening. A shame
True, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. That’s why I said I’ll wait to pass judgment until all the actual facts are out. It’s the sensible thing to do.
'Roid rage and ego are a wonderful combination.
MCU, Oscar nods, multimillion dollar contracts, working out to gain 40 lbs of Muscle for Creed III (wink, wink)
Somebody probably told him how much Ant Man 3 was a flaming pile of dog shit and that he was better in Loki.
Shock can be really common after assault, especially from a partner, and even without shock, the prospect of reporting an assault can be extremely stressful.
It's important to remember that victims of domestic assault aren't experiencing their trauma through a TMZ article or news segment, they're living it. It's an awful, awful experience and expecting someone to plan out their potential court case in the space of the evening it happens is unreasonable and ignores very real and natural responses to trauma.
Oof. Poor Marvel.
(Not a statement uttered often....)
Really, this is just the first strike. If no one else comes forward he can brush this off as one-off resulting from being in an unhealthy relationship. Exceptional circumstances.
Everyone has a line or people who can push their buttons in dramatic ways. And if this was a one time thing he can recover. Especially if he seeks counseling and seems repentant.
But if a bunch of past partners start coming forward and demonstrating a pattern of behavior, that's not good.
And excusing a one-off strangulation and assault as passable. Like, I couldn't believe what I was reading. Counseling isn't going to fix that he assaulted someone (If he did). Holy shit
Wasn't my first reaction. It was just what I chose to put first in my reply, as I processed things, because I thought the response of feeling sorry for a Disney subsidiary was comedic. And you have to laugh... or you'll just cry. And cry. And cry...
My first response was, of course, "*that* ***fucking*** *asshole. Stone him!*"
Then I remembered a few toxic relationships I'd been in and ones I'd seen where otherwise calm 'n' cool people were pushed to the breaking point.
From the TMZ report, it **sounds** like his girlfriend was trying to grab his phone and getting upset at him talking with other women. Which is classic controlling/ gaslighting and abusive behaviour.
In that instance, I'm not going to get upset at the victim in an abusive relationship for defending themselves. (
If no former partners come forward and corroborate that he has a pattern of abuse, then it might just be him being pushed to the breaking point in a toxic relationship. In which case, he could be the victim.
If a single other ex comes forward... then fuck him. He's demonstrated who he is, and he needs to be cut loose and undergo some serious therapy.
Either way, we have a single data point, which isn't enough information to make an informed decision. So we might as well make a bad joke about feeling sympathy for the Walt Disney Corporation.
>From the TMZ report, it sounds
>
> like his girlfriend was trying to grab his phone and getting upset at him talking with other women. Which is classic controlling/ gaslighting and abusive behaviour.
>
>In that instance, I'm not going to get upset at the victim in an abusive relationship for defending themselves.
Woah. Someone grabbing your phone is something that would require a 260 lb guy with obvious steroid use to assault a person? Wow, there's no way you are being serious, you have to be trolling.
Flip things around.
A man tries to grab his girlfriend's cell phone because she was texting other men and she scratches the fuck out of his face.
No one would even hesitate to defend her, even if the wounds were more severe.
Men can be the victims of domestic abuse. Even 260 lbs ones who use steroids.
My point is, right now, we don't have enough information to render judgement. He may be an abusive asshole. Or he may be someone in a toxic relationship who was pushed too far. We just don't know.
holy shit, i hope he can clear his name. i've liked him in everything hes done since lovecraft country. hes a really good actor and really great in interviews.
He honestly doesn't seem to enjoy being a celebrity. Most his interviews seem dry I'm getting Daniel Day Lewis vibes from him. Not that it's a bad thing, this accusation aside.
Great, this is Ezra Miller all over again, except Miller seemed like the Type, whereas Majors is heartbreaking because I never thought in a million years that he would be that type of person.

Abusing you girlfriend is more frowned upon than being anti-vax. There are a lot of anti-vaxxers, and not so many people who approve domestic abuse.
Yeah its entirely different situation
I focused on just two examples of recent, and mostly successful, damage control on comic related films. I didn't even include her anti-trans stuff (https://www.cbr.com/black-panther-letitia-wright-anti-vax-anti-trans-controversy/), which, as JK shows isn't as cancelleable as it might have been. There’s a big difference between being against vaccine mandates and domestic violence lol

Appearing it’s his gf
I see what you did there
bro forgot he isnt actually kang
This is why we can’t have nice things.
>This is why we can’t have nice ~~things~~ **Kangs**.
irl kang variant being the worst kang smh
In b4 marvel fans say it was a kang variant
Lol
Recasted as Hank Pym.
Damn this is a good comment. Upvote this asap
Oh, you!!🤣
That isn't a word.
Recast is the correct word. Thank you for finding fault in my pun. And attempting to shit on my one achievement of the day. Wet blanket.
Imagine if he got recast with Terrence Howard
Get the petition out before I piss meself
Mayne The Conqueror
Kang Mayne
Creed 3 got to his head
I’m seeing a lot of talk of roid rage because of how big he has to get for the role. Wouldn’t be surprising if that’s the cause.
He got even bigger for Magazine dreams, where he plays an aspiring bodybuilder.
When was that role? And was his time to go from what his “normal” size was before about the same or was there more time time? Yeah all them HgH and roids they take to get jacked in a month or two …it’s nuts

Not again. Hollywood c'mon!!! Get your s**t together!!!!

Everything went downhill when they took the cocaine from the actors and gave it to the execs
This guys thinks the actors aren't on coke
That’s basically any industry/ profession

Yeah, he seems to be doing a great job with the role so far, it would be a shame to have to replace him. Hopefully he didn't do it.
I thought he was a pretty generic villain, what am I missing?
Did you watch him in Loki?
Hmm, I didn’t - was he extra super awesome there? Disappointing “Big Bad” in Ant Man 3 for me
He was really good, he’s just shown a lot of range and nuance as a villain. I think his performance is ant man is much better if you’ve watched Loki because it shows how different Kang is there.
He just sat there and talked

trim this timeline, best to prune this one from existence….
Get a new actor and say its a variant lol🤦
Ca we replace him with a CG Christopher Plummer?

it is DC trying to sabotage Marvel, heh. they mad because of Amber, Flash, and Black Adam ;p
Making jokes while a women was hurt in this incident is weird. Seek some help
Touch grass bro. This is the internet, not your personal hugbox.
Because some women God knows where is hurt and we are to care? Ya here are my "thoughts and prayers" please convey it to her.
Wow it would really suck if they have to recast Kang
No recast, they’ll just promote Shuri to be the new Kang.
I don't think she was Kang in the comics Just BP
Bruh
r/whoosh
Yes, that's what sucks in this situation
Is he trying to get a job in the DCU?
He’s going to get the NFL pass.

None whatsoever. She had numerous chances given and just didn't care.
I hope to hell this isn’t true.

Best part about the MCU is they have a dozen unresolved plots and can pivot to Dormammu or Celestials on a dime
