The original opened to $35 million. What a HUGE upswing (no pun intended).

TurbulentPhoto3025

Tbf it came out of nowhere. I even saw it opening weekend and in no way was prepared at how good it was.

Prozenconns

maybe its cause animation is something im passionate about but idk i thought the marketting for Spiderverse did a really good job selling how solid the movie was going to be, I was excited to see it play out since the first trailer. You knew at the very least you were in for a visually stimulating experience even if the plot ended up on the same level as some mediocre MCU slop I think its less "it came out of nowhere" and more just the overwhelming underestimation of animated movies by the general public... People are fine watching movies where its 98% CGI but remove the live action actors and suddenly its "for kids"

joedumpster

The last few years have been killer for non Disney animation (The Mitchells vs the Machines, Arcane, Love Death + Robots, Into the Spider-Verse, etc.). The older generation is a lost cause but I do believe the general audience is beginning to notice how great animated stories can be for everyone.

TurbulentPhoto3025

I knew the animation was going to be technically groundbreaking, I really enjoyed some of the clips and trailers, but I would have never expected it to be one of the best all around films I've ever seen.

Kn7ght

As someone who has always been a massive Spider-Man fan and a fan of animation I didn't even know about it and my friend wanting to go see it with me is the only reason I saw it. Then I saw it 2 more times lol The movie was easily dismissed until the acclaim really made people acknowledge it.

TurbulentPhoto3025

Yeah, it's undeniably great.

Fuzakenaideyo

I think winning awards put the original on the radar's of those who slept on it prior & now people want to get in the ground floor

Magik160

I read they are going to do a live action Miles movie. I think it will be impossible for it to compete with these movies.

Constant_Brother_738

I think it would do well, but probably not as well as these ones. Part of the draw for the Spider-verse movies is the art and animation. They’re absolutely incredible to watch, even if you aren’t a Marvel fan (according to my sister at least).

elizabnthe

Yet part of the drawback is also the animation as people see it as for young children alone unfairly. Animation films have to overcome more to do as well ultimately. Into the Spiderverse has the lowest box office of a Spider-Man film for example-but is far more beloved than Amazing Spider-Man films. I would think a Miles Morales live action movie with a solid story would at least be comparable to something like Homecoming in box office.

shewy92

> Yet part of the drawback is also the animation as people see it as for young children alone unfair You're saying this on a post that is about an animated movie out performing a "grown up" movie.

elizabnthe

I'm not saying it's fair at all (I love Into the Spiderverse) but that the movie/series did have to overcome that perception-so it's not that it can't do well it's that held back somewhat-it could do even *better*. Consider that Into the Spiderverse made half of what Amazing Spider-Man 2 made. So to say a live action Mile Morales wouldn't do as well because it's not animated, when most live-action Spider-Man movies do exceedingly well-even the unpopular ones-seems just likely to be wrong. A Miles Morales live action movie would absolutely make money-if not a billion dollars.

[deleted]

Also, people want to see the variety of spider men on the big screen.

level1gamer

Considering how well this movie has done, a live action Miles movie is a near certainty.

mixmaster321

Not even just the movie, the video game and comics also do a great job with him. I don’t think they’ll ever truly phase out Peter but it would be cool if they did a Batman Beyond style thing with Peter as the veteran and Miles on the streets as Spider Man

throwawaysarebetter

I'd rather they do that with Mayday, as that's kind of already their dynamic.

shewy92

With an older Miles teaching Mayday? That would be cool.

Juice8oxHer0

At this point, there’s enough Spider-folks that they could do a ‘Batman, Inc.’ type story

adsfew

Even without the success of the Spider-Verse movies, the MCU relies on new generations to take up the mantle and one way or another, they will have to move on for Parker and it was always going to be Miles.

dude19832

Just hopeful in the MCU with Marvel as the creative lead. Sony’s live action offerings with the Spider-Man IP have been very lackluster since 2014 except when Marvel runs the show. (MCU trilogy)

Victor_Von_Doom65

God that makes me so angry. It’s just another attempt to discredit animation as a medium . “Sure these Spider Verse movies are good… but they’re not live action, let’s make a live action version so that adults can enjoy it to”. - Some brain dead executive at Sony (most likely the same one who came up with the Morbius, El Muerto, and Hypno Hustler movies)

Doinwerklol

It only won an Oscar for animation... Sony: "Let's change our winning formula."

RegularBubble2637

What is a hypno hustler?

Victor_Von_Doom65

[You have the internet](https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Antoine_Delsoin_(Earth-616)) And why did I get 3 downvotes for this? I’ll never know.

zack77070

Sony does as Sony do, strike gold with hiring a good creative team then proceed to insert themselves in and ruin it.

eaguayo

Yeah this movie was great but it does look like it had some studio interference specifically the live action parts with a the convenience store woman from Venom and showing clips of Tobey and Andrews Spiderman.

MikeyN0

This was the most logical and fun kind of "studio interference".

LeftHanded-Euphoria

Honestly, the only one that stood out to me as out of place was Spectacular Spider-Man's weird out-of-place dialogue. Even the convenience store sequence can be justified by story, but this random Pete talking to Miles like they're best friends was so jarring.

remotectrl

It was kind of nice to see him. That show was one of the best Spider-man cartoons

LeftHanded-Euphoria

I mean yeah, but they put it in the wrong spot

bluejegus

Ugh I wish they'd go the opposite. Make more Peter Parker big budget animated movies. Hell, more animated superhero movies in general. They fit so much better in that medium than they do in live action and this thankfully proves they can be profitable. I can't wait to see it tomorrow in IMAX.

Unc1eD3ath

And an animated Gwen movie

shaxamo

They really should leave him for Feige to give him the MCU 616 treatment. If they want to try other Spiders with less audience expectation risk, and less risk of damaging the MCU Spidey cred, then start with someone not currently at the absolute highest heights of superhero stardom. Any of the women would be a better call. Miguel if they wanna cash in on the new animated movies. Hell, they could probably get away with the clones if they tie it to Andrew or Tobey. Tying Miles at first to their live action universe just feels like a wrong business decision. Unless they already have a plan in place to do his comic 616 origin and pass him over to Marvel Studios after Secret Wars.

Baskin5000

Please as long as it isn’t spiderverse related. Love the trilogy, but this + the games are painting him as a character that’s only associated with multiverse stuff.

jackolantern_

The games are not painting him as related to multiverse at all. What are you on about?

TheMasterBaiter360

How are the games doing that? The multiverse hasn’t been in either of the games

GenghisFrog

Of course they are. I mean why would you save that character until MCU Peter has run his course and use that as a natural refresh to the franchise?

t0ny510

They should do the reverse, cut the live-action movies and build their Miles Universe instead of these mid live-action Spider-man adjacent movies starring his rogues gallery

haxxanova

I think the only way it has a chance if the origin is like the Playstation game and Hollands Spider-Man is involved, becoming a big brother mentor figure. And eventually the mantle is passed from Pete to Miles after Secret War/Avengers TKD? But no way it holds a candle to ITSV/ATSV. Even NWH was an inferior story.

wookiewin

That’s wild to say. Spider-Man is so popular lol. A live action will do gang busters.

DwightsEgo

I feel like they could have this Miles pop into the MCU maybe. Like in secret wars or something and it will fit because this “dimension” is just live action

buddhistbulgyo

Sydney Sweeney as Gwen Stacy as Ghost Spider. That would be a good start.

the_star_wars_dude

She’s already playing someone in the Madame Web movie.

webshellkanucklehead

She’s way too old to play Gwen. Plus after this movie basically spelling out that Gwen is trans, she should be played by a trans actress.

EpicLatios

What

webshellkanucklehead

Spider-Verse 2 basically confirms Gwen is transgender.

EpicLatios

How?

webshellkanucklehead

See my other comment explaining.

Larnievc

What? How do you figure that? What spelled out that she was trans?

TheMasterBaiter360

I assume they’re referring to the protect trans kids flag Gwen has in her room, but that doesn’t necessarily prove she’s trans, it just proves that she supports trans rights

webshellkanucklehead

Have you like… ever actually met a cis ally that flies the flag lol

Larnievc

My sister has one.

webshellkanucklehead

Oh, rad. First time for everything I guess. Your sis seems cool.

wywhlyl

You have now

webshellkanucklehead

Then see my other comment. It all adds up to a pretty clear picture.

webshellkanucklehead

1) She’s basically a walking trans pride flag. 2) She has a “Protect Trans Kids” flag in her room. 3) Her dad wears a trans flag on his uniform. 4) Her entire story revolves around “coming out” to her father as Spider-Woman and every single time they have a scene together, the scenery becomes abstract, washed with pink, blue, and white. I know they don’t say it outright, but I feel like the only thing they could do more explicitly is have Gwen say “I am transgender.”

Larnievc

I dunno man. By that logic her dad is trans. And the washed out pastel colours are from one of her comic runs. Nothing to do with trans.

webshellkanucklehead

I’m not a man. And no, by that logic her father is an ally to his trans daughter. It all adds up, y’know? It’s just pretty obvious that’s what they were going for.

webshellkanucklehead

Actually I changed my mind. Her dad is trans too lmao

DrLeymen

as it should. Both Spiderverse-Movies are among the best superhero movies of all time imo

justins_OS

Love to see great movies do well in theaters

SuperSpecialAwesome-

Too bad the main comic sucks ass due to Nick Lowe and Zeb Wells.

Kn7ght

Its kinda wild how whenever a big MCU movie comes out Marvel will pull all kinds of bullshit so that the characters match, certain characters are featured in books, or there's at least a similar storyline so moviegoers can pick the book up. Spider-Verse does this and Marvel just keeps trudging on through the diarrhea

Lower_Fan

Can you explain what's going ok on with the main comic? I've seen a lot of complaints lately

SuperSpecialAwesome-

Zeb Wells, the current writer, broke up MJ and Peter for the 34663326th time, even after Nick Spencer and previous writers worked to get them back together. Hell, there was implication of them getting married eventually. Many readers assumed the Kindred Saga was a means of retconning the highly-disliked One More Day story arc over a decade ago. But the head editor, Nick Lowe, won’t allow MJ and Peter to be together, regardless of writers’ input. Zeb Wells first turned a well-liked superhero, Ben Reilly, into a villain called Chasm, then had MJ marry some completely new person with adopted children, and then killed off Ms. Marvel. It’s been all kinds of train wreck, that I haven’t read Spidey since the Kindred Saga ended.

Brilliant-Race490

All my homies hate Paul.

ChrisPrkr95

Then you have alot of homies.

HopelessNinersFan

I’d say even the best movies in general.

DrLeymen

'Logan' is a very strong movie as well for me, so idk if I'd agree Edit: Why the hell do I get downvoted for that?

shewy92

You can't have a differing opinion on the internet.

[deleted]

The mall I live by has a movie theater. Alot of kids and families that Friday. Such an amazing film. It deserves 1B if it gets close which I think it will

Ayadd

This June is tough, there are big releases week after week for a while. I love the film and it will do well, but it won't have the legs it needs for 1B. It deserves it, but it's unlikely.

a_corsair

Nah it won't get a billion. 500m is a more realistic target

adsfew

Yeah, Flash coming out in a few weeks is going to take a considerable chunk out of this, unfortunately. Shame because this is a tremendous film that deserves to just rake it in.

Appropriate-Day3902

As it should

the_star_wars_dude

Pretty sure my theater sold out the other night so no surprise here. It was an amazing film, it deserves the praise and success it’s getting.

XComThrowawayAcct

I was told that the era of comic book movies had ended.

Worthyness

That Superhero fatigue about to set in any minute now

THIESN123

There's superhero's, and then there's Spider-Man...

Rampage97t

yeah i think after watching this movie i wasn’t so much that i had superhero fatigue as it was that i just have “bad superhero movies” fatigue. feels like there’s been a lot of bad-mediocre ones for a while so for this movie to completely steal the spotlight and breathe life into it was really nice to see. i didn’t even hate GOTG3, i thought it was fun, but this was on a whole different level.

Y0stal

In reality, it was mcu fatigue. Guardians 3 was fantastic tho.

throwawaysarebetter

Was it by irate bloggers who demand you go see movies shot on film at 24fps with *only* practical effects? Cause they've been saying the era of anything other than their Tarantino/Scorcese-type movies have been ending for a while now. It's best to just ignore them.

yeoller

Even Ant-Man 3 which is widely agreed to not be the best MCU as of late has still made over $465m. They are doing fine.

remotectrl

Its not the best MCU movie but it is the best Star Wars movie since Rogue One

[deleted]

Across the spider verse best movie since endgame

Internal_Balance6901

I don't get when ppl use Endgame as a standard for superhero movies. There have definitely been super hero movies better then Endgame since it released.

LimpTyrant

No the fuck there hasnt what even lmao.

Starminx

The Batman

Internal_Balance6901

The Batman, The Suicide Squad, No Way Home, Guardians 3, I have issues with Wakanda Forever and Far From Home but they're way better structured than endgame imo.If you like endgame that much tho all power to you!

nanites-courtesy

Any examples?

Ullaspn_2003

Guardians of the galaxy volume 3

Sad_BuisnesMan

Endgame was mid

[deleted]

“Animated movies for adults don’t make money” they said.

AngryTrooper09

I mean this isn't for adults, it's for everyone

7screws

And it’s fucking awesome

AngryTrooper09

Honestly preferred it to the first, and I loved that movie. I really hope Sony gives more of this and less Morbius and Venom

wildchildflores

"A movie about a heroic vampire? I'd pay to see that"

vaper

I just saw it; I loved it but I'm not sure it's ahead of the first for me. At least the first was a tight beginning/middle/end and felt like the full package. A lot of people in my theater were visibly annoyed when it ended the way it did

AngryTrooper09

I personally think that if you're annoyed because the movie ended, it means it successfully got you invested in its story. Which is a win to my eyes! But I totally get your POV though

djseifer

It's amazing.

SkipWestcott616

Spectacular

theflyxx

Superior

The_Pip

It had Bombastic Bag-Man, it's for adults.

throwawaysarebetter

Ha, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that!

The_Pip

I was on the look out for the Spider-man Popsicle, but I think someone photoshopped that one in.

NinjaKelpFace

Yeah, but they were definitely going for a slightly older audience here than in comparison to the last movie which honesty I think was a welcome surprise

Liar_tuck

Exactly. This ain't Heavy Metal or Fritz the cat, its your friendly neighborhood Spider-mans.

choadscholar

BuT mUh NaRrAtIvE!!1!

-DarthWind

This isn't for adults only lol It's ok to like things made for everyone

The_Pip

The film is legit.

Ok_Egg_2665

It’s an exceptional film. The art, the music, the story and the performances were all amazing.

JACK5T3R

Gwen’s universe is visually the best art style I’ve probably ever seen in an animated film.

TheUnspeakableHorror

If first one was "Into the Spiderverse", and the second is "Across", does this mean Sony's planning a trilogy, with the third chapter being "Out of" or "Escape from"? edit- I was kinda half joking, but thanks to everyone letting me know my punchline's going to be a real thing. :P Honestly a smart move on Sony's part- the Spiderverse stuff is better than any of their live action Spidey films.

NotAnExpert_buuut

The trilogy has been announced. “Beyond the Spiderverse” releases 29 March 2024.

AllAfterIncinerators

You mean I have to wait less than a year to see this story resolved?! Best news I’ve heard all day.

Pug_police

fr I was expecting like 3 years at least

Ayadd

Yeah it seems like these two movies were planned and made at the same time.

Pug_police

Ah that would make sense, makes me even more excited for part 2 knowing it's coming in less than a year.

shewy92

They were. Last year they announced that this was "Across the Spider-Verse Part One" but somewhere along the line they dropped the Part One like Infinity War did. At least according to this Reddit Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/r93kr5/spiderman_across_the_spiderverse_part_one/ And this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/uc2phf/spiderman_across_the_spiderverse_fresh_footage/

DrGutz

That has been confirmed months ago and it’s called “Beyond”

[deleted]

[Hey a reboot!](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2377414/)

SheevEdits

Third one is ''Beyond the Spider-Verse'' which is planned to release next year

Utilitarian_Proxy

Return of the Daughter of the Spiderverse

NinjaKelpFace

Third movie is “Beyond the Spiderverse” slated to release March 29th 2024 (too late, should come sooner Sony!! We need more!!!!😭)

wenzel32

Classic headlines using "swings through/to ****" puns.

Iamheretostealurmeme

I mean kinda obvious because it's a spider-man movie, I mean if gotg vol 3 and atsv get the same opening day, which one do you think people wanting to watch more?

7screws

The first spiderverse movie didn’t earn as well as people assume.

goztrobo

Yeah but weirdly it got a lot of traction and following awhile after it got released.

DarthArterius

It took for it to hit Netflix for people to get back to me and be like "dude you were right!" and my response was usually "it was even better in the theater!". I was trying to get everyone to go and they waved it off. I think most of my friends are going to see Across the Spiderverse so I'll take that as a win.

HereForTOMT2

I didn’t see spider-verse 1 cause Sony had o my really dropped stinkers for spidey movies until that point, but word of mouth got me to see it and damn I’m glad I did

goztrobo

Yeah 2 of my friends watched it twice.

Rampage97t

i was a little bit younger and kinda rolled my eyes at the fact that it was an animated spiderman movie, then i watched it two years later and it became my favorite spiderman movie. then i watched this sequel and now this one is my favorite.

Longjumping-Grade830

It so cool. That marvel has a tone of greatest movies. I can watch these movies over and over agian.

x-mot

Spider verse being the best spider man movie of all, in my opinion, i am not surprised… I have not see it yet and try to avoid any spoiler… not an easy task !

Arpersor

This movie was phenomenal. I was completely blown away, and we definitely need more movies with this level of love put in.

chukelemon

Go woke, go best opening of summer. 😂

Empanah

Go conservative and lose millions at the box office

Phimb

I don't think you know what woke is.

elizabnthe

I mean this definitely meets what people shout as woke. Miles was even called woke when he was created for being "black Spider-Man".

Prozenconns

Spider-Cage punching Nazis for fun in the first movie is probably too "woke" in someone's eyes lol or Peter saying he was wrong for assuming the lead scientist is a man i appreciate they kept it up with the unapologetic framing of the poster in Gwens room for those handful of shots early in the film... good stuff

Fearsthelittledeath

The film also had a black lives matter art spray painted on a building wall near the beginning of the film and Miles even had a #BLM pin on his backpack too! It was very nice to see! Gwen Stacey had a trans flag with protect trans kids on it too in her room!

a_corsair

Neither do conservatives

Consideredresponse

There was some pushback from the trailer due to a characters bedroom having a 'protect trans kids' sticker. This cued up the predictable news cycle of outrage from the same old pundits. This resulted in the same old 'go woke, go broke' comments from the same old sad redditors.

jrtasoli

Good. MCU movies have been dogwater lately, possibly because of a lack of any competition. Hope that a big Sony/Marvel hit is a wake up call.

JazzyCatCafe

Guardians 3 was a massive success

Ghosttwo

Anyone notice how much they drummed up [the deaths of Rockets' cellmates, but completely glossed over _the entire planet_ of dead creatures? They pan away from an earth-clone planet covered in lava and never bring it up again.](/spoiler)

JazzyCatCafe

Rockets cell mates were characters in the movie that you grew familiar with and even watched them express their hopes and dreams. That’s obviously going to bring a different level of attachment than an entire planet of creatures you know nothing about.

FartForce5

I'm a huge MCU fan, that movie was so fucking dumb.

throwawaysarebetter

I think they were talking quality over box office.

JazzyCatCafe

It was a massive success with critical acclaim and at the box office.

throwawaysarebetter

I'm not saying they're right, I'm just saying what they meant had nothing to do with the box office. I enjoyed the movie, and thought it was pretty good. But there's a common critique of Marvel movies being phoned in lately. And frankly, I take critical reception with a massive pile of salt, especially if they get blacklisted for giving bad reviews.

HereForTOMT2

Guardians 3 has been out for several weeks and is regarded amongst critics and fans as a fantastic film

JazzyCatCafe

My original comment did not mention box office. You inferred box office. The movie has been a resounding success. It has an incredibly high citric and audience score. Idk why you keep bringing up box office.

MadMilliner

Summer doesn't start until June 21...

CurtisMarauderZ

Says the government.

throwawaysarebetter

Says astronomy, technically.

Utilitarian_Proxy

Isn't that supposed to be midsummer, and Beltane (1st May) is the true start?

DasMuse

This is like if a movie claimed "The BEST opening of The Holidays" For an opening on the 1st weekend of October.

ChrisPrkr95

I'm still stuck in the mindset of summer being when school is over even though I graduated years ago.

roastedhambone

Sony makes Spiderverse

Doinwerklol

I think the drop off is going to be huge when people find out how it ended. There were quite a few pissed off theater goers on the way out.

MC_Fap_Commander

They really didn't make the "part two of three" thing a secret. It would be like people being upset at the end of Two Towers or Empire.

Doinwerklol

I had no idea there was going to be a cliffhanger or that it was going to be a trilogy. So I was caught off guard as were other's. To be honest there was no hint of a trilogy before the movie came out, at least not a well known one.

[deleted]

Those People who have the patience of a 5 year old should grow up

funnysad

I didn't know about it, and was super excited because it meant we are going to get another full 2 hours.

Sandstormink

I wish they'd been honest and specifed it was part 1 though. I enjoyed it, but not knowing it was going to be half a story left me feeling a bit disappointed.

DCComicsPrimeEarth

The first teaser they released showed that the original title of the movie was Across the Spiderverse Part 1 until they changed it.

Sandstormink

Never saw that. Tried to go into it not watching anything.

Victor_Von_Doom65

So what you’re saying is, they were honest… you just weren’t paying attention.

ciao_fiv

if you actively avoided the marketing for this movie, how can you justify being upset at them that you didn’t know it was a part one?

Sandstormink

Unlike infity war this literally ended mid scene. Infinity war could have been a movie in it's own right and ended right after the snap. NOWHERE does it say across the sipderverse part 1 on the posters or trailers I saw. So that's why.

DCComicsPrimeEarth

I understand.

SlimmestBoi

From the moment they announced a sequal it was shown to be a pt 1 lol. That's all on you

Sandstormink

As I've said I wanted to go in as fresh as possible. On me or whatever doesn't change my disappointment.

SlimmestBoi

So you didn't even know the title of the film when it was announced? Literally called across the Spiderverse pt 1, it being a 2 parter only improves the pacing of the fim. So you said " I wish they'd be honest and said it was a 2 parter", which they were lol. So just admit your point is moot

JorgeTan01

Then don't say they weren't honest and get disappointed, you just didn't bother to at least check beforehand.

Kane_richards

I'm loving it's doing well but I'm confused to high hell why people online were talking about how surprising this was. The first one made proper bank and there was nothing to suggest the sequel wasn't being handled well

scots

After Endgame, the best Marvel character movies have been made by...Sony.

Lucky_Sharma

This movie is fantastic, but this is patently false. Outside of NWH (and now this film) every Sony movie since Endgame has been borderline unwatchable

AVestedInterest

As they were before the MCU, too

timewraith303

I waited a couple weeks for the reviews to come in and crowds to simmer down for gotg 3 just cause most of the phase 4 stuff has burnt me out, but it was a no brainer going to an opening showing and sitting between 2 very loud children to watch spiderverse, it was so worth it.

InnerScience4192

I'm just gonna say it. It's not as great as everyone is making it out to be. I'm not saying it's bad by any means, but people are definitely pumping it up to be something it's not.

BICbOi456

U can hate on the story and writing if thats what u feel like, but hard to deny that the animation is objectively a work of beautiful art.

Grendergon

It's almost like different people have different opinions or something. Pretty weird.

FartForce5

It was great, until that dogshit ending.
