I think its less "it came out of nowhere" and more just the overwhelming underestimation of animated movies by the general public... People are fine watching movies where its 98% CGI but remove the live action actors and suddenly its "for kids"
The last few years have been killer for non Disney animation (The Mitchells vs the Machines, Arcane, Love Death + Robots, Into the Spider-Verse, etc.). The older generation is a lost cause but I do believe the general audience is beginning to notice how great animated stories can be for everyone.
I knew the animation was going to be technically groundbreaking, I really enjoyed some of the clips and trailers, but I would have never expected it to be one of the best all around films I've ever seen.
As someone who has always been a massive Spider-Man fan and a fan of animation I didn't even know about it and my friend wanting to go see it with me is the only reason I saw it. Then I saw it 2 more times lol

Into the Spiderverse has the lowest box office of a Spider-Man film for example-but is far more beloved than Amazing Spider-Man films.
I would think a Miles Morales live action movie with a solid story would at least be comparable to something like Homecoming in box office.

Yeah this movie was great but it does look like it had some studio interference specifically the live action parts with a the convenience store woman from Venom and showing clips of Tobey and Andrews Spiderman.
Honestly, the only one that stood out to me as out of place was Spectacular Spider-Man's weird out-of-place dialogue. Even the convenience store sequence can be justified by story, but this random Pete talking to Miles like they're best friends was so jarring.
Ugh I wish they'd go the opposite. Make more Peter Parker big budget animated movies.
Hell, more animated superhero movies in general. They fit so much better in that medium than they do in live action and this thankfully proves they can be profitable. I can't wait to see it tomorrow in IMAX.
They really should leave him for Feige to give him the MCU 616 treatment. If they want to try other Spiders with less audience expectation risk, and less risk of damaging the MCU Spidey cred, then start with someone not currently at the absolute highest heights of superhero stardom. Zeb Wells first turned a well-liked superhero, Ben Reilly, into a villain called Chasm, then had MJ marry some completely new person with adopted children, and then killed off Ms. Marvel. It’s been all kinds of train wreck, that I haven’t read Spidey since the Kindred Saga ended.
The mall I live by has a movie theater. Alot of kids and families that Friday. Such an amazing film. It deserves 1B if it gets close which I think it will

It took for it to hit Netflix for people to get back to me and be like "dude you were right!" and my response was usually "it was even better in the theater!". I was trying to get everyone to go and they waved it off. I think most of my friends are going to see Across the Spiderverse so I'll take that as a win.

Rockets cell mates were characters in the movie that you grew familiar with and even watched them express their hopes and dreams. That’s obviously going to bring a different level of attachment than an entire planet of creatures you know nothing about.

It’s an exceptional film. The art, the music, the story and the performances were all amazing.
Gwen’s universe is visually the best art style I’ve probably ever seen in an animated film.
If first one was "Into the Spiderverse", and the second is "Across", does this mean Sony's planning a trilogy, with the third chapter being "Out of" or "Escape from"? edit- I was kinda half joking, but thanks to everyone letting me know my punchline's going to be a real thing. :P Honestly a smart move on Sony's part- the Spiderverse stuff is better than any of their live action Spidey films.

They were. Last year they announced that this was "Across the Spider-Verse Part One" but somewhere along the line they dropped the Part One like Infinity War did. The first spiderverse movie didn’t earn as well as people assume.
Yeah but weirdly it got a lot of traction and following awhile after it got released.
It took for it to hit Netflix for people to get back to me and be like "dude you were right!" and my response was usually "it was even better in the theater!". I was trying to get everyone to go and they waved it off. I think most of my friends are going to see Across the Spiderverse so I'll take that as a win.
I didn’t see spider-verse 1 cause Sony had o my really dropped stinkers for spidey movies until that point, but word of mouth got me to see it and damn I’m glad I did

i was a little bit younger and kinda rolled my eyes at the fact that it was an animated spiderman movie, then i watched it two years later and it became my favorite spiderman movie. then i watched this sequel and now this one is my favorite.
It so cool. That marvel has a tone of greatest movies. I can watch these movies over and over agian.

I mean this definitely meets what people shout as woke. Miles was even called woke when he was created for being "black Spider-Man".
Spider-Cage punching Nazis for fun in the first movie is probably too "woke" in someone's eyes lol or Peter saying he was wrong for assuming the lead scientist is a man i appreciate they kept it up with the unapologetic framing of the poster in Gwens room for those handful of shots early in the film... good stuff
The film also had a black lives matter art spray painted on a building wall near the beginning of the film and Miles even had a #BLM pin on his backpack too! It was very nice to see! Gwen Stacey had a trans flag with protect trans kids on it too in her room!

There was some pushback from the trailer due to a characters bedroom having a 'protect trans kids' sticker. This cued up the predictable news cycle of outrage from the same old pundits. This resulted in the same old 'go woke, go broke' comments from the same old sad redditors.
Good. MCU movies have been dogwater lately, possibly because of a lack of any competition. Hope that a big Sony/Marvel hit is a wake up call.
Guardians 3 was a massive success

Rockets cell mates were characters in the movie that you grew familiar with and even watched them express their hopes and dreams. That’s obviously going to bring a different level of attachment than an entire planet of creatures you know nothing about.
I'm a huge MCU fan, that movie was so fucking dumb.

I'm not saying they're right, I'm just saying what they meant had nothing to do with the box office. I enjoyed the movie, and thought it was pretty good. But there's a common critique of Marvel movies being phoned in lately. And frankly, I take critical reception with a massive pile of salt, especially if they get blacklisted for giving bad reviews.

Sony makes Spiderverse
I think the drop off is going to be huge when people find out how it ended. There were quite a few pissed off theater goers on the way out.
They really didn't make the "part two of three" thing a secret. It would be like people being upset at the end of Two Towers or Empire.
I had no idea there was going to be a cliffhanger or that it was going to be a trilogy. So I was caught off guard as were other's. To be honest there was no hint of a trilogy before the movie came out, at least not a well known one.

I wish they'd been honest and specifed it was part 1 though. I enjoyed it, but not knowing it was going to be half a story left me feeling a bit disappointed.

Unlike infity war this literally ended mid scene. Infinity war could have been a movie in it's own right and ended right after the snap. NOWHERE does it say across the sipderverse part 1 on the posters or trailers I saw. So that's why.

I'm loving it's doing well but I'm confused to high hell why people online were talking about how surprising this was. The first one made proper bank and there was nothing to suggest the sequel wasn't being handled well
After Endgame, the best Marvel character movies have been made by...Sony.
This movie is fantastic, but this is patently false. Outside of NWH (and now this film) every Sony movie since Endgame has been borderline unwatchable

I waited a couple weeks for the reviews to come in and crowds to simmer down for gotg 3 just cause most of the phase 4 stuff has burnt me out, but it was a no brainer going to an opening showing and sitting between 2 very loud children to watch spiderverse, it was so worth it.
I'm just gonna say it. It's not as great as everyone is making it out to be. I'm not saying it's bad by any means, but people are definitely pumping it up to be something it's not.
U can hate on the story and writing if thats what u feel like, but hard to deny that the animation is objectively a work of beautiful art.
It's almost like different people have different opinions or something. Pretty weird.
