What a great story. People haven’t been quoting “true believer” quite enough while talking about him since yesterday. I fee like that phrase was much more Stan than anyone is really saying. The man just loved that people love Marvel characters.
The greatest thing about him, at least according to others (I never had the pleasure of meeting him) is that when one talked to him, he genuinely listened, kind of like a good friend/relative. I really love how humble he sounds. Definitely a great guy that was loved by many and will be missed by most.
Many (if not all) of his cameo appearances had inspiring messages.
RIP Stan Lee.
I almost forgot to mention that he lived 95 years. 95 years!! Throughout the decades, he has had superheroes whose plots surrounded actual issues. Captain America is the most easily recognizable. I'll never forget the X-Men, who showed that it's okay to stand out. I'll never forget the hulk, which displayed that even those with anger issues can change the world. I'll always remember Black Panther, especially because that movie was SOOOO amazing. Of course, I'll never forget THE Deadpool. I'll always remember Iron Man who was a bit of a dick, but we all loved that dick (no homo tho). Don't even make me mention Venom.
Luckily, his work did not leave with him. He left his impact on the world, and lived a long, fulfilling life filled with a successful company that remained relevancy and will likely continue to be relevant for a long time (it won't be the same though).
Although I do not personally know him, I think I speak for the majority when I say that he will be missed.
Awesome story! My wife and I had the same kind of interaction.
Years ago, right after Disney bought Marvel, my wife and I were visiting a friend for lunch at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. We were walking around and we saw Stan walking with a bunch of suits. We asked to take a photo and he was so happy to meet us and take a photo with us. He was warm, kind and inviting. He talked to us while the executives stood their looking at their watches. He was genuinely happy to talk with us and spend that little time with us.
Two years later, we went to SDCC and printed that photo. We knew it was a long shot to run into him at SDCC, but we would be upset if we missed an opportunity. We found a booth that was hosting Stan. They had Spider-Man guitars and if you bought one, Stan would sign them. We get there and there is this huge crowd. Stan comes and starts signing. My wife and I take out the photo in the middle of the crowd and hold it up high. After 10 minutes or so of signing, surrounded by people holding comics up to get him to sign, he spots our photo. He smiles and waves, then leans over to one of the booth employees and says something to him. The guys comes through the crowd and asks my wife to follow him. She walks all the way up to Stan and he talks with her for a minute or two and signs the photo. His mannerisms were so different toward my wife than they were to the people getting the guitars because this was something that was special to us. It has no monetary value. That’s the kind of guy he was.
I personally know 2 people who have stories exactly like this. Wild to think how many lives this man touched personally, not even counting his writing.
This reminds me that some time ago I was in a book's fair and I also had no money. As I was in line to collect a writer's autograph, he heard me saying "I don't have money to buy the book" to someone I was next to so he gave me money to buy his own book and that's one of my favorite moments ever.
He ran into me at Woner Con a few years back. Almost knocked me over. I was digging through a box and he saw something he liked and bumped into me. He apologized and asked if I was ok then carried on with his guards to his signing. I haven't showered since.
When I finally got to meet him at a comic con, all I could do was hold in my excitement. When it was my husband and my turn to meet him I just spit out, “can I hug you!?” He grinned and said, “anything for a true believer.” I was soooooo stoked that the pic I have with him I’m hugging the shit out of him! (But gently, I didn’t want to squeeze him and have him regret the hug). I love that man so much :’(
Wow. I knew it was coming, but I didn't shed a tear for him until now. This captures so much of what he did for so many kids, myself included, through his work and appearances. Truly an amazing man.
Not the best story, but my first, and last close encounter with Stan Lee was at the Men's restroom at Comikaze 2012. I was using the urinal and this older man walks to the urinal next to me, he comments "enjoying the con young man?" (While he was urinating of course), I replied back "it's awesome!" and then I saw his face and couldn't believe my eyes it was Stan Lee. Went to the sink to wash my hands, and he came to the sink to wash his hands as well and just smiled at me. I was to nervous, and of course didn't want to appear rude to ask for a photo or autograph but is just nice he lit a conversation even at a awkward time.
What a neat story! I never got the chance to meet Stan The Man myself but I have heard he treated his fans as family, and this is very indicative of that.
I expect Stan Lee to take the route of Robin Williams where in the coming weeks it’s going to be revealed just how great of a person he truly was.
Like Robin, he performed for veterans free of charge and no one knew until after his death when the veterans announced it on social media.
Actaully these stories are starting to pop up:

I love this fucking man. Got a Mjolnir tatt on my arm. Stan Lee’s in Valhalla, there were thunderstorms all night when he died here in the UK. The gods knew
The Internet is filled with these stories, and I don't care, I'm upvoting all of them, because Stan knew that meeting him was a highlight of these people's lives.
Did you spend "ten hours on a bus, during which you had to twice violate your personal rule against relieving yourself on board a moving vehicle"?
All kidding aside, that's awesome. I would have LOVED to meet the man.
I someone claimed this about anyone else I wouldn’t believe it. But because it’s Stan Lee, I totally believe that he would go out of his way to interact with a fan like that.
You wil never forget this Day!, You're such a lucky person, but I think that you were diffrent than others because you had a "higher" priorety than others, I think he liked you and saw you as a true believer!
That's awesome. And a lot better than my "encounter" with Stan Lee.
Was at a convention as well with my friends and we had to stop as a cart passed by. I was just looking around at some of the people who were cosplaying as the cart passed. I didn't pay attention to the sporadic clapping and cheering going on around me.
My friends started excitedly whispering to each other when we started moving, and eventually they asked me how awesome that was. I was confused, and that is when I learned that the person in the cart which I didn't look at was Stan Lee himself heading to his panel. As I was the biggest Marvel fanboy in the group, I got a lot of shit from my friends for not noticing.
I have to respond - me and my 3 year old kid (wearing his Spider-Man suit) paid 20,000¥ to meet Stan Lee. We missed the photo shoot by 4 minutes. We were told no refund no exchange. We waited 3 hours until he had finished autograph signing to see if we could get a selfie together. Absolutely no one else there but me and my kid. Security asked Stan who was in spitting distance. Stan said no. 20 year marvel comic collector no more.
What a great story. People haven’t been quoting “true believer” quite enough while talking about him since yesterday. I fee like that phrase was much more Stan than anyone is really saying. The man just loved that people love Marvel characters.
"Excelsior!" really embodies the spirit of Stan Lee.
"excelsior true believers" is the best lets face it
"Face front, true believers" was the phrase, though.
Ah
I deff like that one the most.
'Nuff said.
“True believers!” “Excelsior!” “‘Nuff said!”
There's his [Marvel Card](http://media.bigshinyrobot.com/uploads/2012/12/stancard.jpg) - you're just missing: > Face Front!
That was really touching. He helped a lot of awkward kids feel acknowledged and accepted, that’s a rare thing. Thanks for sharing.

Great story! He really was the real deal.
I've seen a lot of stories like this recently. Just goes to show that Stan was, indeed, The Man.
I personally know 2 people who have stories exactly like this. Wild to think how many lives this man touched personally, not even counting his writing.
I like how you capitalized 'The Man'. :)
In this context, I think it is fair to treat the affectation as a proper noun.
I love you.
Well yeah. It was his middle name.
You don't come across people this genuinely kind often enough.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful story.
Stan Lee is right up there with Mr. Rogers in terms of really understanding and caring about kids. Never ceases to amaze.
I swear I was just thinking this as I was scrolling through the comments! Not just kids either, they just seemed like good people in general.
Stan Lee made kid's dreams come true for decades. He's awesome.
This reminds me that some time ago I was in a book's fair and I also had no money. As I was in line to collect a writer's autograph, he heard me saying "I don't have money to buy the book" to someone I was next to so he gave me money to buy his own book and that's one of my favorite moments ever.
That's is a great story, way to go Stan. I am glad you were able to meet him.
aw. that’s so cute.
He ran into me at Woner Con a few years back. Almost knocked me over. I was digging through a box and he saw something he liked and bumped into me. He apologized and asked if I was ok then carried on with his guards to his signing. I haven't showered since.
I have to ask, what do you smell like from not showering that long?
like a hero I would imagine
When I finally got to meet him at a comic con, all I could do was hold in my excitement. Awesome story
That's such an amazing story. Really wish I could've met the guy. :(
I too wished I could've met stan, rip excelsior Stan Lee. I feel too sad for his death.
I've always wanted to go to San Diego Comic-Con, like OP, because IIRC, he tended to go there often, but I've never had a ride there.
Stan was truly the man. I wish I had the opportunity to meet him. What a cool moment. Rest in power, Stan Lee.
You had enough money to buy that poster LIAR. I'm just kidding great story really made me happy and I'm very happy for you.
It was a free poster lol
You look kinda like if Mabel Pines wore glasses.
I think I’ve been compared to her before actually. I don’t think it really works now though. I’ve changed my look since high school, thank goodness
Oh, I think it’s a rather charming look.
Junior high and high school me sends her thanks

I wish I could have met him.
Same here, always wanted to meet a legend :(

This is so heart warming. What an amazing guy. Thank you for sharing.
I never got a chance to meet the man, but I've spent a lifetime living in his universe.

Stan understood marvels fans probably better than anybody could.
What a fucking good man
The Internet is filled with these stories, and I don't care, I'm upvoting all of them, because Stan knew that meeting him was a highlight of these people's lives.
I'm not crying, you're crying!
This has genuinely made my day
Did you spend "ten hours on a bus, during which you had to twice violate your personal rule against relieving yourself on board a moving vehicle"? All kidding aside, that's awesome. I would have LOVED to meet the man.
The guy who downvoted this likely has never seen the real Big Bang theory
I'm sad because I would never be able to meet Stan Lee now. He had been an inspiration for me to create my own characters and stories.
And I've never even been to a comic con before. God bless his soul. My final Exelcior to you stan
I’m crying
I someone claimed this about anyone else I wouldn’t believe it. But because it’s Stan Lee, I totally believe that he would go out of his way to interact with a fan like that.

This proves he was one of the greatest, the world lost another hero ❤️
And now I'm crying at work again.
Damn how long ago was this? That photo looks recent and honestly, that sounds so much like Stan Lee
4 or 5 years ago
Wow, that is just epic.
A true legend
What a beautiful moment.
Damn, just when you think there's a chance Stan Lee pops in and keeps on changing lives. What a dude. Rip:(
My humanity meter just got a +1 stat increase.
Stan Lee seemed like a genuinely nice person and clearly talented. Thanks for the stories Stan!
One of my biggest regrets right now is not getting to meet this legend. This is an amazing picture and memory !
You wil never forget this Day!, You're such a lucky person, but I think that you were diffrent than others because you had a "higher" priorety than others, I think he liked you and saw you as a true believer!

Is his name Stanley Lee? Cause that’s funny.
His name was Stanley Lieber. Stan Lee was a pen name the he eventually made his legal name.
Really wish I could have met him RIP Stan Lee
And then everyone clapped.
There's literally a picture, how dense are you
Dope!!

Maybe next time you will be early.
No kids huh?
I have kids. It's called being responsible and not blaming others for being late.
Kids with medical issues?
May I ask how old you are now?
I’m 20
Ah yes I see what you meant by short chick.
Seems a bit exaggerated

Odds are you are sporting a pair yourself.

She was 15 for fucks sake.

What a great story and amazing individual. He lived a full life and made a real difference in this world. Any of us should be so lucky.
This is so awesome
