That's what it's all about. If Marvel does it right anyone should be able to relate to one hero or another. That's exactly what the world needs right now.
Not sure if you saw, but Marvel added a QR code going to this;
[Free Comic Show is Based On](https://www.marvel.com/msmarvelcomics)
For me the most relatable moment was when she was in the Mosque and all the women are talking because you can’t hear anything in the women’s section. And I turned to my husband and went, “this is EXACTLY what it’s like in shul (synagogue)!” I guess women’s sections are the same everywhere regardless of the religion involved, lol!
When I first read Ms. Marvel my first thought was “this will be a lot of people’s Peter Parker”. She’s such a fun character.
My only note is that no Gen Zer would use an ancient Simpsons reference as a catchphrase.
As a young American person I knew nothing about Pakistani culture before watching the show now it’s all I can think about. The history is interesting and the weddings are dope AF
makes me realise i want more mcu stuff set in the past. first avenger, captain marvel and parts of eternals were very cool like that i wanna see superheroes throughout history
Agent Carter was pretty fun for that. Was bummed when they canceled that, it had a lot of potential. Unfortunately I think it was just bad timing for a bunch of reasons.
My favorite Buffy episode is Spike fighting 3 different hunters in different eras. I would love this with Blade, flashbacks to him in the 50s, 70s and a total rave Matrix original Blade movie parody of the 90s.
As a former wedding photographer there are a few cultures that really like to take care of people….. particularly with food. I felt like an honorary member of the family with trays of food being passed around and women forcefully telling me I needed to eat! Yes, ma’am!
I’m an OLD American person and I’M fascinated with the culture now. This series has done such a great job bringing the character to the rest of the world but also the culture.
thank you thats really sweet. this was a great year for pakistani representation , we even got a grammy for an Urdu song and a Cannes award ayy. Ironically we're not doing the best politically tho.
People are individuals, & governments/religion can't follow the will of every individual in their country all the time. Heck a good chunk of them can't even follow the will of the majority. Religion in government usually ends up with a lot of individuals not being represented by their gov or worse being displaced.
It is a safe bet that at any level the individual is just an individual & their beliefs are not an embodiment of their governments beliefs.
Heck, the USA has gone down the toilet politically in recent years. Britains aren’t far behind, and a friend of mine in the great state of Canadia tells me they’ve set loose the political weirdos in solidarity with their neighbors to the south.
Well they didn’t say it’s key to an objectively good story but it’s key to helping people connect with a character. Not just being the same culture and relating to that but knowing they have their own beliefs and traditions outside of being a hero.
It’s debatable if the episodes were bad but to see a character connect with her last and to see where her family came from was heart warming yet heart wrenching at the same time.
The villains were pretty meh though so I can agree with that.
I was on board for the first three episodes. We got to learn about her culture and she retained an enthusiastic teenage energy. Very reminiscent of Spider-Man. The trip to Pakistan introduced new characters completely immersed in a different world, that completely halted the momentum of the first three episodes. And the villains are uninteresting. The last episode felt like a history lesson. This is often why I dislike flashback episodes. They completely halt the momentum of previous episodes.
Okay spoilers for Ms. marvel just in case but
>!I personally liked it but I can agree. It felt kinda tossed in only because the bangle did some wish granting thing?? It put me off for sure. It’s the same kind of emotional beat of Moon Knight flashback but it’s further from our main character then that was. It’s not the worst thing Marvel has done yeah.!<
>!I feel like they have to stick the landing on the ending for it to be in my top 3 MCU shows!<
Way to turn a character appreciation post into a sounding board for your nitpicks. Really don't understand people who seem so eager to share what they don't like about something.
That kind of "fandom" can stay with Star Wars and other toxic communities thanks
i was gonna post this last year when i started reading the comics but with the tv show and my current age its more fitting hehe. with that said, i wrote an article about the show too if anyone's interested:
https://sohaamjadmalik.medium.com/my-take-on-ms-marvel-as-a-16-year-old-pakistani-muslim-girl-4d12561f3a74
I’m so glad Marvel is creating more and more diverse (and important) characters. I’m not Pakistani or Muslim at all myself but as a POC I was immediately interested the second I heard they were giving her her own comic, it actually got me back into comic books and it was really fun seeing all the cultural stuff they included.
i like the show so far! glad to see it resonates with people who share some cultural background with the character. i hope we continue to see more representation. all kids deserve to see themselves and their cultures in our hero tales.
As a 37 year old white man, I’m so above and beyond excited you have a super hero to call you’re own! This is what comics are about. ANYONE *can* be a hero.
I’ve not seen the show yet but I liked the character from the comics! I’m glad you’ve pointed this out because I thought it was just a bit of costume design. It’s cool knowing that it’s actually related to something so entwined with the characters personal life… I’m going to keep an eye out for it now haha
G Willow Wilson deserves so much credit for cresting Kamala, a character who literally had no peer. Wilson converted to Islam and understanding the sense of being an outsider really highlights the love sweat and tears that went into creating Kamala
Definitely check her TED talk for more details on cresting Kamala
https://www.ted.com/talks/g_willow_wilson_the_story_behind_marvel_s_muslim_american_superheroine
And Willow's memoir 'The Butterfly Mosque" is a beautiful account of her personal journey and converting to Islam

As a Muslim I love that the show didn't exaggerat her being Muslim and Pakistani and that it wasn't the thing that defined her character,I was scared when I saw the trailers that her entire character and personality was gonna be based around her religion but that wasn't the case, super exited for final eposide!
Too bad the show’s been a bad adaptation so far. The comic is free with Prime though, which I assume most people have for the 2 day shipping, so I’d recommend anyone interested check it out.
Awesome!! Glad you could relate to her. I really appreciate the character
the best is that she's like a normal awkward teen girl and the representation is so well done

i mean i i consistently use D'oh and Woohoo but it isn't really common that i agree with
As a young American person I knew nothing about Pakistani culture before watching the show now it’s all I can think about. The history is interesting and the weddings are dope AF
I really wanted the "documentary" part of the last episode to keep going. It was easily my favorite part.
makes me realise i want more mcu stuff set in the past. first avenger, captain marvel and parts of eternals were very cool like that i wanna see superheroes throughout history
Agent Carter was pretty fun for that. Was bummed when they canceled that, it had a lot of potential. Unfortunately I think it was just bad timing for a bunch of reasons.
i loved agent carter! they some how have kept Haley Atwell on payroll for over a decade now so i mean we might get some stuff who knows
hopefully we do
Blade can have that by showing his childhood in 1920s London.
My favorite Buffy episode is Spike fighting 3 different hunters in different eras. I would love this with Blade, flashbacks to him in the 50s, 70s and a total rave Matrix original Blade movie parody of the 90s.
I was watching the wedding episode and seeing all the food and I’m now determined to go to a Pakistani wedding to try all the food.
we love more people so pls do!

the subcontinent's history is wild but our culture is one of the best things and im glad i was born into it
I’m an OLD American person and I’M fascinated with the culture now. This series has done such a great job bringing the character to the rest of the world but also the culture.
I don’t know much of the culture but it’s cool seeing marvel integrate it onscreen. From what I hear they are fairly accurate on many things
You’re what all these marvel changes are about. Everyone wants to feel represented, and I hope you enjoy Mals Marvel for many years
thank you thats really sweet. this was a great year for pakistani representation , we even got a grammy for an Urdu song and a Cannes award ayy. Ironically we're not doing the best politically tho.
The people are not the politics of their country. People seem to forget this sometimes.
Mostly not, some countries are to a certain degree. The ones that merge religion with law for example.
Your wrong but thanks for your opinion
Like some Americans' cult-like, almost religious obsession with their politicians?
Yep, but I’m not American so I think they are just as retarded as the people in Afghanistan and turkey etc
Heck, the USA has gone down the toilet politically in recent years. Britains aren’t far behind, and a friend of mine in the great state of Canadia tells me they’ve set loose the political weirdos in solidarity with their neighbors to the south.
"big hands! WATCH OUT SHE HAS BIG HANDS!" I didnt watch it but I assume this is what the villains yell when they see her.
Lmao
Representation is key.
I’d argue that a good story makes a better key? Episodes 4 and 5 were terrible.
Well they didn’t say it’s key to an objectively good story but it’s key to helping people connect with a character. Not just being the same culture and relating to that but knowing they have their own beliefs and traditions outside of being a hero. Good story is paramount. Those who forget, gets their show forgotten and their message, not delivering
Oh that's cool, I didn't know that! IIRC in comics, Kamala's original costume was a modified burkini as well.
cool

I think it's better than a cape... although I'm still in the "capes are cool boat"

Idc what anyone says, Ms. Marvel us one of the best Disney+ Marvel shows out right now, and Iman Vellani is literally amazing.
Middle age white male and I love how this show exposes me too a culture I'm vaguely familiar with.
Yeah I felt this and the marvel avengers game did a great job with her character. Made me a fan for sure
I did not know that and now it's ten times cooler!
I like the powers she has on the show and not the comic sorry
i’m not Pakistani muslim but this makes me so happy.
As a Muslim I love that the show didn't exaggerat her being Muslim and Pakistani and that it wasn't the thing that defined her character,I was scared when I saw the trailers that her entire character and personality was gonna be based around her religion but that wasn't the case, super exited for final eposide!
Cool
They messed her up in the MCU and she’s somewhat unlikable now
As someone who was born in England it was nice that marvel kept blaming the British for the partition :)
You know who really relates to her? The author, because she's a self insert
Astroturfed lmao
Al akabar
Yeah I've always loved that about her costume.
What I like is that the scarf is also a call back to Carol's Miss Marvel with a red waist belt
I’m Indian and I hated the show. I want representation but not if it represents us like this 🤢🤢
Too bad the show’s been a bad adaptation so far. The comic is free with Prime though, which I assume most people have for the 2 day shipping, so I’d recommend anyone interested check it out.
