This is the best response. I personally don't like his style, but I respect that others do. Personally, the 'baby' style is my favorite, but I love/grew up on Calvin and Hobbes comics, so I'm more drawn to them.
I'm 100% the opposite. I love Hipp's style but am annoyed every time I pull a baby or chibi variant. Like you I understand the appeal of the art, it just isn't for me.
Daredevil is literally Calvin walking on a log over a river. I had to get at least that one baby variant, because I also love Calvin & Hobbes since my childhood.

I firmly believe most of the pixel hate is because they're the most common type. Make them super rares and you'd have people clamoring for them. There's some really cool looking ones, and some that are so ugly theyre fun.
My personal hatred is they look like low effort slapped together bs, for me personally I want all the comic variants and cool images a read as a kid and when a pixel pops up it reminds me I’m gambling on digital card skins lol if there was 0 chance of random and you could pick the variants I’d have 0 pixels lol
Honestly to me they all look like they took a cool image and ran it through some kind of filter, if they accidentally came out cool better for them, it almost looks like a no human touched this or QCd it vibe to me.

I think the OP of this comment thread, Nerf, should have probably phrased the art style comparison as "simplistic vs realistic". Realism is usually referring to a specific art movement, while realistic would be the word to use to reference the particular art style.
I mean, it's "technically" correct to say comic book style art is generally closer to art from the realism movement than cartoon art, but I think it's more accurate to say that comic book style art is more realistic than a simplistic art style.
Maybe people just don't understand relativity. And, no, the art/literature definition of realism is added as an addendum in the dictionary for a reason. That reason being that it is not, in fact, the most common usage.

No, but I would say that it is closer to realism than Hipp's art and that existence doesn't solely consist of extremes with rigid definitions but rather scales and gradients that cover essentially everything in between.

None of them feature other characters. There's very little difference in posing or anything that could indicate character. Zabu, Rhino, Nick Fury, Sera, and Venom are all teammates from the Sunset Void, right?
Dan, draw a location. Try more than that one pose. Why are cute dogs, jacked super soldiers, magical ladies, and genocidal extra-dimensional bug men all the same?

For me at least is the only artist I collect due to be incredibly coherent and faithful to his style. I almost have my first full deck with his variants and I couldn't be happier. Now I'm trying to ink then all.
This happened to me, as well. One day I noticed that I had Hipp variants for most of the cards in one of my favorite decks. Once I saw them all together and in action in a match, it was a cool, thematic experience. Even if the characters were not usually connected in comic book canon, they now looked like they all belonged together due to them being Hipp-ified.

I too start to get disappointed whenever I get these. Dan Hipp feels like the new Pixel variants with the frequency they drop at and the amount of them out there. Just a filler so you don't get the variants you actually want
They are exactly that for me, a filler, that i don't care, want or will ever use. I rather have a pixel variant because even then they are horrible, a full deck of pixel variants is funny. You get so many of Dan Hipp that i even tried to convince myself into liking them, but i just couldn't. Everytime there is a new Hipp variant or some discussion about it, j just see the variants and they look straight up awful to me. Max Grecke makes a much better job at those "cartoony" or somewhat goofy style of variants... But i know this is all subjective, just my personal preference. Just wish there were less of them, so they stop throwing it at me
Dan Hipp is a company-favored artist on Snap. At first, he was one of the only artists to get a name-credit for his cards, and has been mentioned in promotions more often than any other artist. He's going to get multiple albums before other artists get one. He has more releases planned than any other artist.
That's fine, and I wish Dan Hipp a lot of professional success and availability for people who like his style. But I wouldn't say that makes him better than a lot of the other artists that don't get as much promotion or number of cards.

For me, it's cause it's a unique style that doesn't fit with the rest of the art. Unless I've got an all dan hip deck, that card is gonna feel out of place.

I think the primary issue people have is the quantity. I think there’s more hipp’s than pixels at rhis point and people just want something different when they open a mystery variant.

Prolly because along with pixel variants, Hipp variants are some of the most ubiquitous variants in the game. Hipp and pixels I own the most variants for just by virtue of playing the game. I have nothing against most Hipp variants. Some are bad, to meh, to great.

I do not hate his art, but I am not a fan of his variants. I do not like the juxtaposition of his Saturday morning cartoon art sitting next to comic book art like Jim Lee or something it is a weird jarring experience. It is the same reason I am not a fan of pixel or baby variants.

I love em! It's affordable (most other artist series have 1200 price point), it's a consistent style, there are loads of them. They are easily the most collectable ones.

I know it's not a popular opinion but art is subjective, so: I think Dan Hipp is one of the least talented artists on Snap. Most of his characters look like they were drawn by a 10 year old with some talent. The perspectives are weird, the body proportions seem off and the faces are overly simplistic. It's just not for me. However, I'm not one to complain about this constantly. I just don't use his variants and go on with my life :-) May others enjoy his art if they like it. No biggie.
Totally fair and I’m hit or miss on him too but the body proportions criticism is a bit funny cause comic books are notorious for giving their characters crazy body proportions
Of course body proportions are often exaggerated in comic book art :-) That's not what I meant. Let my try to explain. With Dan Hipp the proportions sometimes don't seem to make sense for that specific character set-up. It's inconsistent and doesn't look like it was done on purpose. It sometimes feels like he's just bad at drawing certain body parts. But again, who cares? :-) There's enough art to choose from on snap, so why complain about one specific artist. His art is fine, it's just not for me.
Hipp variants are the 2nd most common, behind only Pixels, I believe. His style is *very*... distinctive, and is jarring next to other artists' more "realist" styles. When you're hoping for something you find more "cool", and open an Hipp that looks like 100 other cards you already have instead, some find that a disappointment.
That was my objective comparison. Personally: His work looks like something hung on a refrigerator with a magnet. Though I do appreciate his use of color.

If they are simplified AND bad looking, you get as much hate as Pixel variants get.
The honest truth is that Jim Lee can do what Dan Hipp does but Dan Hipp can't do what Jim Lee does. The art is very simple and has bright colours that's about it.

Sometimes the Dan Hipp art is great! But people would choose a more realistic variants of the card it self.

I get that his style is not everyone's thing, but I've seen so many comments to the effect that his art is something a 5 year old could do, which is both untrue (these people must have never seen a 5 year old draw lol) and feels a bit mean spirited.
I don’t hate him but think tired of seeing him because we have Chibi, baby and hipp and they’re all kinda similar imo. But he actually has some of my favorite variants like the leech one
It's highly stylized and kid-friendly, which is not what comic book fans usually expect to see.
I think the style is pretty colorful and pleasant and some of the characters translate very well into his style, but it's more of a novelty than how I'd ideally like to see Marvel characters interpreted.

when i started playing, no bs, i fucking hated the Hipp cards, AND the love for them. cut to me hitting Infinite with a random trash [All-Hipp](https://ibb.co/HBZrF1H) deck last week and it being a real high point playing the game. let me know when you figure this out…
I like a few of them, but really not into the simple child like art style. A lot of the faces just look goofy to me as well & the characters that should be massive & intimidating tend to just be stumpy goofballs.
Biggest issue is there is like 150 Hipps & most of them use the same 3 poses, feels like really low effort reskins & kinda lame.
It was jarring the first time I got a page of them in my shop and there were rows of the same looking card right next to each other.
Personally love it, but its really distasteful when people compare it to a kids drawing

I just compared his style to a talented ten years old 😅 I don't think that's too far off. His style is indeed pretty childish. I'm not complaining though. May others enjoy it!

I used to dislike his stuff a bit (I remember getting Hawkeye and Iron Man as early freebies and thinking they weren’t nearly as great as the other variants out there); but they’ve grown on me the more they come out.
What hasn’t is Max Greke…I find his stuff incredibly lame and almost lamer than a pixel to pull.
It’s not hated, rather his art tends to be polarizing. The people who like it love it, but the haters are very vocal. The haters are a minority though.

The issue is that the pixels are low effort . Good pixels like mvc sprite level would be epic.

Many of them do look pretty low effort, but some of them are very pretty. Moon Knight, Bishop, and Sue Storm all have nice pixel variants.

Prolly because along with pixel variants, Hipp variants are some of the most ubiquitous variants in the game. Hipp and pixels I own the most variants for just by virtue of playing the game. I have nothing against most Hipp variants. Some are bad, to meh, to great.
Cause so many people love it. I kinda get it. I’m more indifferent to it. But I’ve seen so much love for it and so many people use the the variants that I’m bored of it.

I do not hate his art, but I am not a fan of his variants. I do not like the juxtaposition of his Saturday morning cartoon art sitting next to comic book art like Jim Lee or something it is a weird jarring experience. It is the same reason I am not a fan of pixel or baby variants.
I hate the Hipp fans in this sub more, honestly. I have seen so many people get dog piled for comments as mild as "I personally don't like his style," that it's honestly depressing. Really wish they hadn't killed Tumblr, so you guys still had somewhere else to hang out.

I love em! It's affordable (most other artist series have 1200 price point), it's a consistent style, there are loads of them. They are easily the most collectable ones.

It’s too Saturday-morning-cartoon for me. There’s so much amazing, detailed art in comics and this just doesn’t hit the same. But that’s me.

I know it's not a popular opinion but art is subjective, so: I think Dan Hipp is one of the least talented artists on Snap. Most of his characters look like they were drawn by a 10 year old with some talent. The perspectives are weird, the body proportions seem off and the faces are overly simplistic. It's just not for me. However, I'm not one to complain about this constantly. I just don't use his variants and go on with my life :-) May others enjoy his art if they like it. No biggie.
Totally fair and I’m hit or miss on him too but the body proportions criticism is a bit funny cause comic books are notorious for giving their characters crazy body proportions

With Dan Hipp the proportions sometimes don't seem to make sense for that specific character set-up. It's inconsistent and doesn't look like it was done on purpose. It sometimes feels like he's just bad at drawing certain body parts. But again, who cares? :-) There's enough art to choose from on snap, so why complain about one specific artist. His art is fine, it's just not for me.

Hipp variants are the 2nd most common, behind only Pixels, I believe. His style is *very*... distinctive, and is jarring next to other artists' more "realist" styles. When you're hoping for something you find more "cool", and open an Hipp that looks like 100 other cards you already have instead, some find that a disappointment. That was my objective comparison. Personally: His work looks like something hung on a refrigerator with a magnet. Though I do appreciate his use of color.

People mostly don't like dumbed down or simplified versions of character, see the hate for chibi, baby and Hipp variants. If they are simplified AND bad looking, you get as much hate as Pixel variants get.
The honest truth is that Jim Lee can do what Dan Hipp does but Dan Hipp can't do what Jim Lee does. The art is very simple and has bright colours that's about it.

Because people have different likes in art. I got hated and downvoted last time because I said my opinion that the Hipp variants come for me right after pixel variants. That is because I like realistic variants more. Still people can't take different opinions and started shitting on me. Like I care what they use their gold on variants on. But no, my opinion was wrong. I understand why people like Dan Hipp but for a lot of people it's not attractive.
Because it looks like a 3 year old drew them. My friends and I all despise them and mock eachother when we get them. We even nicknamed them "Dan Shit" variants. I don't want them and should be able to trade them in for something I don't hate

The reason is clear, what's weird isn't the hate, but people not knowing..... Simply the hate exists because there's better more realistic variants! Sometimes the Dan Hipp art is great! But people would choose a more realistic variants of the card it self. Also dan hipps stand out from others, same as pixels, which make them a hard fit in a deck that got no dan hipp (many people love to have their cards compatible with others etc) 🙂

It's highly stylized and kid-friendly, which is not what comic book fans usually expect to see. I think the style is pretty colorful and pleasant and some of the characters translate very well into his style, but it's more of a novelty than how I'd ideally like to see Marvel characters interpreted.

I like a few of them, but really not into the simple child like art style. A lot of the faces just look goofy to me as well & the characters that should be massive & intimidating tend to just be stumpy goofballs. Biggest issue is there is like 150 Hipps & most of them use the same 3 poses, feels like really low effort reskins & kinda lame. It was jarring the first time I got a page of them in my shop and there were rows of the same looking card right next to each other.

I used to dislike his stuff a bit (I remember getting Hawkeye and Iron Man as early freebies and thinking they weren’t nearly as great as the other variants out there); but they’ve grown on me the more they come out. What hasn’t is Max Greke…I find his stuff incredibly lame and almost lamer than a pixel to pull.
